COMICS: Marvel E-I-C Axel Alonso Explains The Significance Of "The Phoenix Five"

Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso explains the role of "The Phoneix Five" (Cyclops, Emma Frost, Colossus, Magik and Namor) in Avengers Vs. X-Men going forwards, teasing what they have in store for Earth's Mightiest Heroes and much more.

Act One of Avengers Vs. X-Men saw both teams frantically hunting down Hope Summers as the Phoenix Force headed towards Earth. In the most recent issue, The Avengers managed to succeed in stopping the entity bonding with Hope, but subsequently caused it to split into five and instead link itself with five other members of the X-Men. Talking to Comic Book Resources, Axel Alonso has elaborated on their role in the event going forward and teased some interesting bits and pieces of information about what we should expect in Act Two.

"The most immediate question is, 'Can the Phoenix Force be controlled?' Are these five individuals -- any one of them or all five collectively -- capable of controlling it? The Phoenix Force is destruction and rebirth, so it's safe top say they're going define exactly what that means. And as the teaser suggests, they have a chance to remake the word in their image. But what does that mean? You might be surprised."

"We carefully picked these five characters -- Cyclops, Emma, Colossus, Magik and Namor -- because of their personalities, their power sets, and the windows they offer into pockets of the Marvel Universe -- hint, hint. Namor, for instance -- you'll see why we picked him, as Act 2 unfolds."

"If you think of Act 1 ['AvX' #1-5] as a boxing match, it's safe to say the early rounds went to the Avengers, but the last round ended with a game-changing punch that sent the Avengers staggering to the ropes. That's where we pick up with issue #6. Cap, Iron Man, Thor and the gang have got to shake it off and figure out just who their opponent is now, and what their next move should be. And let me make one thing perfectly clear: Do not assume the Avengers are the good guys and the X-Men are suddenly the bad guys. I'd wager that the Phoenix Five are going to earn some fans -- including people who rooted for the Avengers in round 1."

I don't care what anyone says that seemed like a Namor being important to Marvel in the upcoming year.
DukeAcureds - 6/11/2012, 5:18 AM
I keep getting redirected to an article likening the Twilight couple to Romeo and Juliet because they never show up together at parties. Snooville need to brush up on their Shakespeare.

FINALLY! John Romita Jr. is not doing the pencils anymore! Hurray!

Seriously, Romita's art is one of the biggest flaws of this series... He's just not as good as he used to be...

But now that he's gone, I'm expecting better things from AvX!
TheAmazingAvenger - 6/11/2012, 6:33 AM
@wearethewalkingdead9: I feel the same bro! Since Cyttorak's host can't serve any other entity aside from him, I'm betting that he releases Colossus because he is now possessed by the Phoenix.

"I want Marvel to relaunch all there stuff (except the Ultimate Universe) basically do a new 52 route, change some of the characters origins (i.e. Spider-Man, Iron Man, Wolverine) not to much but maybe to make them more exciting and relatable and a little bit more realistic."

What?
limer99 - 6/11/2012, 7:36 AM
Can anyone explain why I'm being directed to some Snookie shit?
Betty - 6/11/2012, 7:41 AM
I like Phoenix Force Five. Each character could tell a joke at the end of each episode.
DukeAcureds - 6/11/2012, 7:56 AM
Betty@ Ketchup. Ketchup.

Are they going to re-power all mutants who lost their powers after Day M? Now that would be a "game changer".

Yeah this was the issue that made me give up on this event. The Phoenix Five is so freaking stupid. Terrible plot point to an already very underwhelming series.
Wildaniel - 6/11/2012, 4:34 PM
I really LOVE this cover. The normal covers have been better then the variants, lol.
GUNSMITH - 6/11/2012, 4:50 PM
I THINK THEIR COSTUMES ARE BAD AZZ
Acerimmer1 - 6/11/2012, 6:11 PM
Gayness! Thats the significance of the Pheonix Five. That and to delete Collosusnaut.
216manofsteele - 6/11/2012, 7:46 PM
@dantesparda that would be badass if they do go that route it will be either scott or emma who does it
Bark4Soul - 6/11/2012, 9:11 PM
So many douchies hating on Romita, I really like Copiel though. I like Mcniven for these big Marvel events, ever since he did Civil War everything serious should be MvNivster :)
mob7medina - 6/12/2012, 2:11 AM
looks pretty decent but the "Force 5"part of the name is kinda cheesy sounding imo...
Jefferys - 6/12/2012, 2:22 AM
Is there a reason why it's five X-Men? I mean, couldn't they have thrown in three Avengers, Three X-Men. No one else would find it exciting to see what Thor, Cap or Iron Man would do and look like with the Phoenix Force?
