According to Deadline, Universal has announced plans to delay the release of The Bourne Legacy by a week. It will now hit the big screen on August 10th, instead of August 3rd. This makes sense, especially as that release date would have pitted it directly against Sony Pictures' Total Recall remake. The studio are also taking into account the fact that The Dark Knight Rises will more than likely storm the box office as Marvel's The Avengers did earlier this year and hold the #1 spot for several weeks. Some last minute reshoots played no part in this decision according to the site, while the reaction to the fourth Bourne movie (although this one doesn't actually feature Matt Damon as the titular character) has apparently been a good one so far at test screenings.

The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.

STARRING:

Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross
Rachel Weisz as Stephanie Snyder
Edward Norton as Byer
Joan Allen as Pam Landy
David Strathairn as Noah Vosen
Albert Finney as Dr. Albert Hirsch
Scott Glenn as Ezra Kramer

RELEASE DATE: August 3rd 10th, 2012

Just one week, not bad. Really looking forward to this. Trailer looked good, and Renner is amazing.

Wow this has been a weird year for stuff getting moved around.
Jordanstine - 6/22/2012, 1:31 PM
Don't matter.

Co-worker of mine saw a pre-screening in May and loved it, especially how it ties in to the Bourne Ultimatum.

SOOOOOO looking frward to the BOURNE LEGACY!

At least it didn't pull a G.I. Joe: Retaliation

antonio - 6/22/2012, 1:59 PM
Smart move.
Durf - 6/22/2012, 2:06 PM
Smart move to give TDKR some more space. This will help it to make a little more money. Hope it is good, but I am not completely sold. I liked the first 3, but something about this one just doesn't mesh for me. Maybe it's the scientific experiment angle, but I don' know. We will see
Durf - 6/22/2012, 2:06 PM
*don't know
antonio - 6/22/2012, 2:10 PM
Haha I just realized something. This is the second time a Universal had to move one of their movies because of a Nolan film. The first time being The Adjustment Bureau having to because of Inception.
antonio - 6/22/2012, 2:10 PM
*Universal film
gillri - 6/22/2012, 2:11 PM
Skyfall is gonna own this piece of crap
antonio - 6/22/2012, 2:17 PM
TDKR is the unstoppable force. TBL is the movable object.
jazzman - 6/22/2012, 2:20 PM
THEY FEAR THE BAT lol
Rykoo - 6/22/2012, 2:38 PM
i think some of these studio execs have seen TDKR and so needed to make some decisions lol
GingerBird - 6/22/2012, 2:39 PM
Smart move you guys, TDKR #1
4 weeks in a row?
accountnolongerinuse - 6/22/2012, 2:44 PM
Only a week is not so bad. When I saw the headline, my immediate fear was that this would be an extreme push, like the G.I. Joe Retaliation delay. I only saw the first three recently, but nevertheless, I'm very much looking forward to this. Probably moreso than The Dark Knight Rises.
agentwhatshisface - 6/22/2012, 2:48 PM
Cant wait.
ralfinader - 6/22/2012, 3:01 PM
That is a smart move. TDKR will eat up other movies chances for success for at least 2 to 4 weeks after the 20th (regardless of how the people on this site feel, good or ill).
PantherX - 6/22/2012, 3:44 PM
Wise move.
TheAbomination - 6/22/2012, 4:30 PM
Hahaha they must have learned their lesson when Battleship opened two weeks after the Avengers. Smart move, Universal.
ManofSteel91 - 6/22/2012, 4:40 PM
Of course it's a smart move Bourne thinks 2 or 3 steps ahead of everyone. Can't wait to see the new Bourne movie looks just as great as the others. And yes the dark knight rises will be movie of the year by far!
JorEl77 - 6/22/2012, 4:46 PM
Here's a logical question. If you already know the release date of another big blockbuster movie that week, why would you put your release date the same week? Unless they already had their release date before TDKR.Which I doubt, because I didn't even know they were coming out with a new Bourne movie yet, until I seen the trailer recently.I just hate when two big movies are coming out the same week. It's stupid if you ask me.Spread out the movies during the year, because there's plenty of weeks when there isn't nothing but sh*t that comes out.
Scabsallover - 6/22/2012, 5:06 PM
Really, because I think it was due to the release of Total Recall the same day.
NeoBaggins - 6/22/2012, 5:07 PM

2 weeks are guaranteed No.1 for TDKR. & looking at TOTAL RECALL epic excitement it might not even open at No.2!!
So a good move for Universal.... I don't think TDKR will stay NO.1 for 4 straight weeks;
1: cus Batman Films are more strong in BoxOffice & work a lot better than any film during WEEK, while other are better on weekend! Like Avengers!!
2: Avengers stayed No.1 for 3 weeks mainly (also) cuz of ridiculously uninspiring films in following weeks like Dark Shadows & BATTLESHIP! I think if MIB3 would've been out next weekend then Avengers would've gotten hit more! Although it might have stayed No.1 but certainly not as strong, cuz of WILL SMITH & family Audience divided.

Anyway I can see TDKR doing 3 straight weeks... More than that would mean its the Biggest Film ever... Cuz at that time to open at No.1, it need 50 odd million$ & earning that in 4th weekend wouldve took it over 700 Milion easily in US!!
So let's see.... Hope it's a great Film & BoxOffice will take care of itself.
mgeoff88 - 6/22/2012, 7:04 PM
That's a smart move on their part.

I'm a fan of the series, and while I miss Matt Damon as the title character, I think Jeremy Renner will be great.

This is one of the non-CBMs I'm really looking forward to this year.
Lego - 6/22/2012, 8:02 PM
LMAOOO Elguason has been trolling TDKR for weeks

this guy is pathetic
NeoBaggins - 6/22/2012, 8:27 PM
Maybe they pushed it back to think up a better tag line.

"There was never just one" reminds me of....

Grimm - 6/22/2012, 8:56 PM
TDKR needs all the help it can get...
pro346 - 6/22/2012, 9:08 PM
Im seeing tdkr and total recall might skip bourne.
@grimm yeah im sure it doesnt!!!
JOSSWHEDON666 - 6/22/2012, 9:08 PM
@Intruder "that guy" = a bitch?

People don't care about Jeremy Renner. I didn't even care about him when I cast him as Hawkeye. Hawkeye sucks so much while I was giving Shane Black a rimjob we can confirm that Hawkeye will die in the first five minutes of Iron Man 3 by getting raped to death by the Rainbow Dynamo.

People who like Renner and Hawkeye are also gay and I hope their family members get murdered or die in a fire.

Best,

- Joss Whedon
NeoBaggins - 6/22/2012, 9:14 PM
I'll go see Skyfall but rent this. If it's good, and they continue with it, I'll see the next one at the movies.
Vafrous - 6/22/2012, 9:31 PM
Hawkeye is damn badass...
MadTitan - 6/23/2012, 2:35 AM
not a wise move. it has a good shot at attracting Bourne franchise fans so TDKR competition is not enough to make them decide that unless they have bigger worries in their hands if they're product is not even at par with the previous Bourne series.
MadTitan - 6/23/2012, 2:43 AM
@Maximus101

-The Avengers racked up the Box Office like raving mad dogs because it doesn't only feature the two character you mentioned but has more iconic superheroes ever put together in one film. Captain America, Thor and Hulk - the big three. now you add that with the recently uplifted Iron Man as the poster boy of Disney marketing what's there to lose. oh i forget as lame as you may note it even Hawkeye and Black Widow has it's fan as hard as it may seem to you.all in all it may still have more to offer than even the film and director you worship has in stored.
GUNSMITH - 6/23/2012, 8:23 AM
I THINK IT WAS A SMART MOVE BECAUSE GOING UP AGAINST BATMAN ALONE IS A BAD MOVE.
Coloso - 6/23/2012, 11:01 AM
@Maximus101 shut your pie hole with that "I don't take sides" crap. Your the king of the trolls along with your buddy lego. "I don't hate on a movie cause it's either marvel or dc" LMFAO your the definition of a nolanite and you show your true colors every time. Avengers is the movie event of the year and you can take that to the bank ;P
EarOne - 6/23/2012, 10:42 PM
very VERY smart move on the Bourne people's part. but, i just don't see the TR remake as a worrying factor though. i'd rather see this new Bourne than that remake, UNLESS..they'd promise me naked scenes of Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale.
