Following the news that work might finally be moving ahead on Ant-Man, our friends over at Bleeding Cool have made a rather interesting discovery about another planned Marvel Studios movie; Guardians of the Galaxy.

Marvel Comics have just filed eleven new trademark applications for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY covering everything from jewelery to beverages to furniture to cosmetics. The applications cover International Classes 3, 14, 16, 20, 24, 29, 30, 32, 35, 41, 42, and also include computer games, fabrics, foods, paper goods, entertainment and internet services, and even retail store services.

It is of course possible that Marvel are simply planning on increasing the sorts of merchandise available for these characters following the rumoured launch of a new Guardians of the Galaxy series by Brian Michael Bendis after the conclusion of Avengers Vs. X-Men. However, it seems far more likely that this is in fact in preparation for the planned big screen outing for the characters, despite the fact that they may still be a good few years away from their live action debut. Be sure to sound off with your thoughts on all of this in the usual spot.

Ehh
ThreeBigTacos - 6/25/2012, 7:15 AM
What are the odds a Guardians of the Galaxy movie would work if done properly? I don't want it to become another Green Lantern (flopped giant space epic) and would have to be done well enough to be received like Star Wars.
Francisjb - 6/25/2012, 7:23 AM
I hope this does not take place in the same universe as The Avengers. If you are having trouble convincing people that Wasp and Antman are believable... how are you going to explain a Rocket Racoon? That's just as stupid as the Wonder Twins and the annoying monkey.
PanochaLibre - 6/25/2012, 7:25 AM
This will never take off. It is much too ridiculous , it's just a sky cooper rip off with a dash of homo erotic Martian role playing. They are like going to have trannies dressed as the gogs for all the rainbow parades. This is so gay!
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 6/25/2012, 7:28 AM
If they were to do a GOTG Movie, they need to do it essentially from the Star-Lord Issues of Annihilation Conquest, of course, removing out all of the Annihilation War stuff, in that series, they introduced all the characters without origins and it [frick]ing worked! And Groot is a must!

TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 6/25/2012, 7:29 AM
I think audiences would [frick]ing love this, I mean, it's Expendables in Space, and at the end, they could introduce Nova, or if Nova is an original character in the movie, they could submerge further into Thanos' story.
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 6/25/2012, 7:30 AM
But I think this is for comics because about 2 weeks ago they released all these GOTG toys and shit.
FireKnightRises - 6/25/2012, 7:32 AM
I don't know how this movie can work either but I expected some orgasms and crazyness from fanboys on this news
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 6/25/2012, 7:33 AM
I just wouldn't be able to take a talking raccoon seriously. The script could be the best ever and win multiple awards, but I still wouldn't be able to stop thinking the entire time he is on screen that hey, it's a freaking talking raccoon.
worldbreaker - 6/25/2012, 7:37 AM
thanos imperative. i've been begging for adam warlock and drax the destroyer to be on screen for a long time now. i thought warlock would be good to bring in with thor2 because one of his first appearances was being beaten by thor. hopefully they give both old and new versions of drax. this would have to be in the avengers story arc or drax would make no sense and have to be a completely different character. he was created for the sole purpose of killing thanos
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 6/25/2012, 7:37 AM
@RFD Really? I figure he'd be an icon like how Hulk was to audiences, people at my college were going nuts over him in the Avengers. I can see Raccoon doing the same, that is to say if they make him funny and sarcastic. Maybe it's just me, but I can see some Highschooler's going, "Dude! That Raccon with that big [frick]ing pistol and turret with the rocket launchers was badass!" But for now, I just want my Cap 2, IM3, and Thor 2.
Godzillafart - 6/25/2012, 7:40 AM
Don't do it, Marvel. It will be a bigger flop than Green Lantern.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 6/25/2012, 7:46 AM
I don't know TheGambitFreak, I wouldn't compare him to the hulk. People outside of comic book fans knew who hulk was, nobody has any clue who Rocket Raccoon is. Anyway, a Guardians movie would be great, I still don't know how I'll be able to concentrate with a talking raccoon. Then again, Lord of the Rings had talking trees and I'm cool with that, so who knows? Hopefully they actually make the movie so I can find out.
ElApe - 6/25/2012, 7:46 AM
Not excited...but happy to be pleasantly surprised.
worldbreaker - 6/25/2012, 7:47 AM
i love the raccoon. i think it should just be a wild raccoon that keeps attacking starlord or only starlord can see him. but thats just me, i would be willing to throw away that character to laughs

FireKnightRises - 6/25/2012, 7:49 AM
I just dont see it how they can make this work? some people knew cap and ironman before movies and thor is norse god but this? nobody knew them outside comic nerd

how they can promoted this to public? how this shit can sell?
SageMode - 6/25/2012, 7:51 AM
It's gonna be weird seeing Rocket Raccoon on screen, but cool nonetheless.

Correct me of I'm wrong, but I don't think Nova was ever a member of the GOTG.
Tevii - 6/25/2012, 7:53 AM
@threebigtacos - Green Lantern had great potential, the problem was the delivery. WB has a tendency to screw up things. This is still Marvel Entertainment, they are doing all their movies correctly. I think this will be great.

thalidomide - 6/25/2012, 7:54 AM
I haven't read any GOTG issues, any recommendations?
ROBBEATZZZ - 6/25/2012, 7:56 AM
@Francisjb..umm..?? it wouldn't make sense to NOT have them in the same U as Avengers...i'm mean we already know the whole Marvel Studios U is connected..They have introduced cosmic threats..why not have them in the same U??
Tevii - 6/25/2012, 7:56 AM
"include computer games, fabrics, foods, paper goods, entertainment and internet services, and even retail store services."
This is definitely for merchandising purposes for the intended movie. There are too many options to be just for the upcoming comic.
beane2099 - 6/25/2012, 7:56 AM
Why WOULDN'T this work? Their debut on Avengers EMH was pretty good (yes, Rocket Raccoon and Groot too). Take Annihilation and shift it around so that Thanos is the heavy in place of Anihilus (cause I'm pretty sure FOX has dibbs on him) and you've got a movie. I think people are getting too stuck on Groot and Rocket Raccoon. Adam Warlock, Star Lord, Nova, Drax, Gammora are in there too. And they're pretty cool. Is there a danger of it turning out like Green Lantern? Yes. But it doesn't necessarily follow that it will.
Ranger14 - 6/25/2012, 7:56 AM
Nobody had heard of Men in Black prior to the film and look how successful it was and it had funky little aliens and what not in it. Hardly believable, but who cares? They're comic book movies! These aren't supposed to be real! People like superhero movies and I have no doubt Marvel could pull this off.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 6/25/2012, 7:59 AM
@Ranger14

So you are saying have Will Smith play Rocket Raccoon ;-).
ROBBEATZZZ - 6/25/2012, 8:00 AM
Marvel Studios will tweek things to make it work..just like there other films..why aren't we convinced yet?? even after Avengers.
IgnurRant - 6/25/2012, 8:01 AM
Compete wate of time.

Better idea. Grindhouse double feature. Powerman and Iron Fist. Sequel is a team up film Heroes for Hire
ROBBEATZZZ - 6/25/2012, 8:01 AM
@beane2099..exactly!!
FireKnightRises - 6/25/2012, 8:05 AM
@Ranger14
how you compared this to MIB? their totally different
GOTG are space superheroes like Green lantern and we knew how that turned out

Look I like the Guardians as much as the next guy and would love to see Star Lord and Groot but its hard to ignore the elephant in the room that is Rocket Racoon. But hey if they pull it off that would be great.
ATrueHero1987 - 6/25/2012, 8:09 AM
I'm interested at seeing a full Marvel cosmic movie. I'm interested in seeing how Marvel does this & their planned "Inhumans" movie. I wish Marvel had the rights back to the FF.
ThaMessenger07 - 6/25/2012, 8:12 AM
Yes Bitches! Thanos is gonna be the main villain! Marvel Phase 2 is the Infinity Gauntlet!
Ranger14 - 6/25/2012, 8:13 AM
"@Ranger14

You're missing the point. People don't have to be familiar with the characters or story prior to a film being released for it to be successful. If it is done right and marketed right it can be a success. We know how Green Lantern turned out and we know how the Avengers turned out. Marvel can pull it off.
SCURVYDOG619 - 6/25/2012, 8:13 AM
So who voices Rocket? Bruce Campbell?
thedisabledcubicle - 6/25/2012, 8:13 AM
Not a chance of a live-action adaptation. Getting movie-goers to be excited about Thor was one thing, but this... Not a chance.
Only, maybe possible, going to happen if they go for the artistic route like Watchmen. But even then, at least Watchmen is critically acclaimed and recognised in popular culture.
Keldor - 6/25/2012, 8:14 AM
Rocket Racoon is a modern character, not a side character like the Wonder Twins and the annoying monkey. If you knew better, you would know that Rocket Racoon is a rated 'R' character. That is what makes him so cool. He "looks" like a loveable lame cartoony side kick character comic relief etc. Except when he opens his mouth and fires his guns. If I was a DC fanboy and I didnt know any better, looking atthe pictures and NEVER reading a Gog comic in my life, at first glance, Rocket Rackoon is as you say, like the Wonder Twins and the annoying monkey. But that would be 'if' I was a fanboy who refused to read anything Marvel. I wouldnt know any better and I wouldnt know what Im talking about.
ATrueHero1987 - 6/25/2012, 8:22 AM
I'm interested in seeing how they handle this. As long as we get that Hulk sequel by 2015 though :)
PanochaLibre - 6/25/2012, 8:23 AM
Rocket racoon is a dork .. Rated r for retarded
worldbreaker - 6/25/2012, 8:23 AM
@darknightrises- green lantern flopping had nothing to do with it not being set on earth. i think the amount of time the movie spent on earth is what ruined it. starwars was just space superheroes too if we're generalizing. i'm sure superman will leave the atmosphere in the new movie too. green lantern is one of the very few movies to be set in space that didnt sell well. aside from syfy channel originals. wow i put way too much thought into that
IronBaby - 6/25/2012, 8:24 AM
so if they are making guardians of the galaxy. It might lead up to the avengers crossover to fight Thanos in the sequel. Ill be excited if this happens!
CPBuff22 - 6/25/2012, 8:26 AM
"I am Groot!"
CharlesTheIncredible - 6/25/2012, 8:35 AM
Im sure if this comes to fruition Marvel can make it work. Afterall, they made Thor work. A guy who claimed (at the time) to be a norse god that spoke in old english...they can make this work. My worry is that people are thinking it will be like Green Lanter, which is why I hate that Green Lantern was terrible because any intergalactic movie that comes out (comic related) will be compared to it.

My brother came to me with the idea of working on a GL movie (maybe a comic first) and more recently (life got in the way so we stopped working on it) I told him after the fail that was GL we should even move forward cuz I doubt ppl will take another GL movie seriously after the first one.
worldbreaker - 6/25/2012, 8:36 AM
rocket raccoon is awesome. you guy's really dont know the character if you just think he's a raccoon. he has real depth, but you wouldnt know without reading it. all jokes aside i would love to see an actual portrayal of rocket raccoon. i think comicbook movies need a little more rocket raccoon and less realism. i have a feeling the same people that dont want to see rocket raccoon are the same people that like whipless, catless Catwoman and little venomless bane. the realism is to draw non-comic fans to seeing it. what i really want is something made for comicbook fans. lately it seems like that's what theyre doing, like theyre more willing to let the realism go
eleven59 - 6/25/2012, 8:38 AM
true we have accepted weird and wild talking aliens before- star wars, mib, talking trees in lotr, so this will all come down to how its handled- cast, story, plot, and word of mouth.. you know, the usual...

interested to seeing their approach. classic, new or mixed teams...
Tevii - 6/25/2012, 8:43 AM
I cant believe all the doomsayers and negativity.

1) This is being done by Disney/ Marvel Entertainment group... NOT CRAPPY Warner Bros. They JUST gave us The Avengers and have a cohesive and connected universe.

2) Space epics and Sci-Fi USUALLY work great when they are done correctly. (Green Lantern was NOT done correctly, it wasnt that audiences just sneered at the genre)

3) They have now introduced Thanos as well as invading aliens. So adding Guardians of the Galaxy will fit in nicely as well as be a LOGICAL addition.

Once the first trailer hits, all you haters and doubters will bite your tongues and realize that Marvel/Disney have a solid and logical strategy... Now if only DC/Warner Bros could get one
DrHop - 6/25/2012, 8:47 AM
I was going to come up with some to say about how all of you are wrong but I think this picture will work.

MGS - 6/25/2012, 8:48 AM
Rocket Racoon? He'll go over well with non-comic book audiences like Howard the Duck! I agreed with Tea.. go with the original lineup! I haven't kept up on the current situation with GOTG, but what happened to the original team?
ThunderCougarFalconBird - 6/25/2012, 9:07 AM
Green Lantern was hardly a "space epic".

"I'm on Earth"
"Now I'm not"
"oh, back on Earth"
"No, I've [frick]ed off again"
"Now I'm back"

Not much in the way of intergalactic travel, just scene hopping to a different backdrop. The Avengers has already introduced the intergalactic side of things so I don't see why this can't work. Marvel/Disney have found their formula, WB/DC need to find theirs before attempting something too big.
skidz - 6/25/2012, 9:08 AM
I'd love to see who they'd cast as Rocket. They'll probably stick with the original cast or go with an amalgamation of the two rosters.
VladMaximus - 6/25/2012, 9:11 AM
I have never read these books but these characters look stupid
