UPDATE: Speculation That Andrew Garfield Will Be In THE AVENGERS Begins...AGAIN

However, this time it's for the sequel! Andrew Garfield has been spotted in New York with a very big pile of The Avengers comic books featuring Thanos. A bit of light reading or research for Marvel Studios' planned sequel?

Here we go again! Before Marvel's The Avengers was released back in May, speculation was running rampant that Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker/Spider-Man would cameo in Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble. He didn't. However, the actor has now been spotted with something leading The Daily Mail to come to the conclusion that he may be swatting up for a role in the planned sequel to the most successful comic book movie ever. The fact that he's holding a bunch of comic books featuring Thanos could certainly lead one to come up with such a theory, and parties involved with both films have expressed interest in allowing Spider-Man to appear in a future The Avengers film despite the fact that the rights to the character are held by a different studio.

Seems unlikely, eh? However, Avi Arad sid recently get fan terribly excited with the declaration that, "If something like that happens, it's great for Disney, it's great for Sony. If the right story comes in..." With The Amazing Spider-Man being a hit with the majority of critics so far, a good couple of weeks at the box office could be all it takes to make this a reality. How about a cameo such as the one below? (taken from Mark Millar and Terry Dodson's Marvel Knights Spider-Man) Sound off with your thoughts below.

UPDATE: The following Tweet appears to debunk the speculation above, although it's a little strange for Marvel to make the effort to comment on something so seemingly insignificant...

GreenHalJordan - 6/28/2012, 4:38 AM
Thats awesome! I like how the shield agent in the back is watching him for recruitment lol. It would be awesome tho to have spidey in the avengers because usually iron man is the smartass, but imaging a teenager among them and u have got some interesting character interactions. Cant wait!
TopCat89 - 6/28/2012, 4:40 AM
This will surely ignite the rumour fire again....would be awesome if it's a deliberate tease of what's yet to come!
marvel72 - 6/28/2012, 4:46 AM
well thats abit more convincing,if you just said andrew garfield might be in the avengers sequel you could call bullshit, but when his got a stack of avengers comics in his arms.

well it might happen now more than ever.
gambgel - 6/28/2012, 4:53 AM
it clearly seems like a publicity stunt

I doubt paparazzis pursue Andrew during the whole day and week

whatever it is, its a great possibility
FireKnightRises - 6/28/2012, 4:57 AM
like Pepsiguy2 said its publicity stunt from sony
GUNSMITH - 6/28/2012, 4:58 AM
IT WILL HAPPEN, HIM AN WOLVERINE.
BackwardGalaxy - 6/28/2012, 4:58 AM
"Taking a big risk either way." = You have no idea what you're talking about and should stop trying to sound like you do.
eyegloo - 6/28/2012, 5:03 AM
I think Spider-Man has to be in The Avenger 2 in order to be as accepted as the Raimi Spider-Man was
Jolt17 - 6/28/2012, 5:03 AM
I really can't care less about Spidey being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It won't even be a big deal if he won't be joining The Avengers; I'd rather see the likes of Giant Man, Black Panther...or whoever. I really don't get all the fuss over the matter.
morenfaster - 6/28/2012, 5:06 AM
He should have bags and boards for those. Bloody Savage.
NeoBaggins - 6/28/2012, 5:08 AM
lol@Garfield pimping his bitches with a set-up photo.

Well played sir. Well played.
breakUbatman - 6/28/2012, 5:08 AM
They should leave it alone, just focus on making sure we don't get another Iron Man 2.

Easter eggs like, Stark weapons and adamantium in Fantastic Four are fine. Cross over and you start to raise all sorts of questions

a publicity stunt to entice more viewers to watch his amazing spalding-man.
well played but not working, lol
DudeLove721 - 6/28/2012, 5:16 AM
Wow, this is exactly like that time where Eva Mendez was spotted with a bunch of Avengers comics to research The Wasp and ended up playing her in The Av-- oh wait a minute, that turned out to be bullshit. The Daily Mail is not exactly a publication I'd call a reliable source.
Fantine - 6/28/2012, 5:17 AM
Guys, I work in PR and this is such an obvious stunt. He has been told by the studio and his publicst, to walk about holding Avengers comics featuring Thanos, as a way to attract the fans of the Avengers movie. Its very badly excuted though, he has mulitple copies of the same comic and they are facing towards the camera, while he poses.
DrDoom - 6/28/2012, 5:18 AM
This is proof of nothing. Besides, I don't think Marvel would be silly enough to allow a film they didn't have control over into the MCU.
Zordan - 6/28/2012, 5:18 AM
hugh jackman and andrew in new avengers movie. awesome.
MisterFixit - 6/28/2012, 5:18 AM
@grif and @red no continuity issue, he had not yet become spiderman
MyInnerDork - 6/28/2012, 5:20 AM
OMFG REALLY?!?!

REACH.

Garfield has gone public saying he is a comic book fan ... ever stop to think he is just reading some recent issues?

C'mon man...
MadTitan - 6/28/2012, 5:22 AM

FireKnightRises - 6/28/2012, 5:23 AM
Garfield = "hey guys I loves comic especially avengers, you see I bought bunch of the same comics because I'm FAN"

yeah whatever sony
Fabs - 6/28/2012, 5:26 AM
Why does he have TWO copies of the same comic? the first one is double...
MadTitan - 6/28/2012, 5:27 AM

Garf on his back facing unbelievers.

FireKnightRises - 6/28/2012, 5:33 AM
LMAO owlman
AmazingFantasy - 6/28/2012, 5:34 AM
He is a comic-book fan so I guess he would read comics...

But if he does.

HavokTurbo - 6/28/2012, 5:37 AM
Not to boost the rumor mill... butand i know this sounds like something that could be made up but i have a friend that works for sony and shes said that theyve been approached and continue to be approached for there to be a crossover between the two, however like everything it comes down to the money, we shall see when the time comes.. also have info on the sequal if anyone is intrested feel free to contact me.. AC1 - 6/28/2012, 5:43 AM
It's be great if Spidey had a small role in The Avengers 2 - for one thing it'd guarantee that audiences were even more pumped for this than Avengers. Even a cameo would be pretty cool.

@grif maybe The Amazing Spider-Man is set after The Avengers?
6of13 - 6/28/2012, 5:43 AM
Can't the guy just read some comics without anyone trying to read too much into it.
AtomicChipmunk - 6/28/2012, 5:45 AM
Spiderman is my favourite Marvel superhero.

That would be great!
AmazingFantasy - 6/28/2012, 5:53 AM
I'm leaving these here:

MisterNiceGuy - 6/28/2012, 5:55 AM
Interesting
comicb00kguy - 6/28/2012, 5:58 AM
Okay,so how do we know that he's holding "a pile" of Avengers comics featuring Thanos? You can only see covers of two books. Those other ones might be anything. Looks like someone is assuming here, and we all know what happens when you do that.

This whole thing reeks of a staged shot designed to rile up people on websites like this and tease us with something that isn't going to happen. I'll believe Spider-man will show up in the Avengers sequel when Garfield is spotted in costume on the set of that sequel. Until then, it's all idle speculation, and I'm not getting excited or anything about it.
spiderclone - 6/28/2012, 6:00 AM
well he is a fan of the comics, so that could just be his monthly colletion
JDUKE25 - 6/28/2012, 6:05 AM
Wouldn't mind seeing Spidey in Avengers 2, but if not, that's perfectly fine. Spidey has plenty of great baddies and stories to draw from.
SamWinchester - 6/28/2012, 6:07 AM
@Grif The same can be said for War Machine and we know he exists in that continuity too, dumbass troll.
NeoBaggins - 6/28/2012, 6:08 AM
Can you please turn the comics toward the camera Mr. Garfield. Thanks.

What a rude comic shop. They usually put your comics in a bag. Oh wait, this is fake lol

HannibalKing - 6/28/2012, 6:10 AM
I picked up an Aquaman comic today, where's my movie deal?
rorstiel - 6/28/2012, 6:11 AM
grif is such a loser
