Well, it would appear as if the return of Jean Grey will be just one of the many changes set to occur in the Marvel Universe at the conclusion of Avengers Vs. X-Men. It has already been rumoured that the publisher will be doing some sort of relaunch (possibly called "Marvel Now") which won't effect continuity, but will take many titles back to #1 with new costumes and creative teams for many of their characters. However, the return of Jean Grey might be the most surprising change yet! Check out the image below (which also appears to feature the Hulk - could this have something to do with the rumoured Uncanny Avengers comic book?) and the text which accompanied it over at Entertainment Weekly.

To answer your questions: Yes, this is Jean Grey — as in, the Jean Grey who’s been absent from Marvel comics ever since dying for a second time back in the mid-00s. And yes, she is modeling her vintage blue-and-yellow X-Men outfit from her Marvel Girl days. Does this mean that the fan-favorite character is finally returning? We can only confirm that her presence in the Marvel universe will not be imaginary. This will not be part of the Ultimate line-up. She will not be a zombie hologram, like Shard on X-Factor. What could this all mean?

Well, despite it looking more like Hope Summers than Jean Grey in that image, the text above seems pretty definitive. She's coming back! The site describes this as, "an upcoming initiative by Marvel Comics that will build off the current Avengers vs. X-Men crossover and radically alter the Marvel universe as you know it." With more details promised for tomorrow, we'll be sure to keep you updated.

I miss the X-Men from the early 90's. The stuff today isn't bad but damn the 90's X-Men were unstoppable!
MJPETTY7 - 7/2/2012, 9:55 AM
Quesada only brings he back to kill her again... lol

Joe Q. isn't in charge anymore. Have you forgotten about that?

As for Jean Grey returning...

mawilli4 - 7/2/2012, 10:00 AM
i'm betting Cyclops uses the Phoenix force to reset everything after he realizes how much of a douche nugget he's being.
marvel72 - 7/2/2012, 10:02 AM
you'll never beat the claremont years, when the x-men were at their best.

seventeen years claremont wrote the x-men,that is one hell of a run.
DanteSparda - 7/2/2012, 10:05 AM
Finally!!!

Everyone suspected that she would be resurrected after AVX but she had stayed dead for too long that none was really sure about that, personally I'm glad that she returns, although I would love to see her with her Team Gold suit but that's fine too.

I just hope that rumored relaunch happens to be false, most of the Marvel U is fine as it is, there are just some comic runs that need a fresh take and a change of writing, but not all.

The X-Men aren't the same without her!

the only good thing that ever happened to jean greay is when she's dead
batmanmovie2012 - 7/2/2012, 10:28 AM
New number 1's after a big event. Sounds like something that happened last year. (NOT TROLLING)
cyked - 7/2/2012, 10:31 AM
I agree with Marvel72.
Claremont all the way.

Joss Whedon's run on Astonishing was pretty spectacular, too.

John Byrne's Hidden Years was really fun..... but his recent stuff has been just terrible. He totally ruined the Next Men over the past several issues, and his new Trio? Sweet Jesus, what happened to the guy.

Im sick of the word "REBOOT" but Marvel should FIRE QUESADA, get some people together and plan out a relaunch.
Its a bit much to expect 13-25 year olds to read characters that were developed 40 years ago.

And Marvel should plan and execute better than DC did and not restrain themselves into following classic plotlines, like the death of Gwen Stacy. And they should be open to omitting and adding other characters to the mix.
Like DC shouldve considered drastic changes to Superman/Clark Kent, because if you try a new style and then you add, Superman+LoisLane+Perry White+Jimmy Olsen+Daily Planet+ETC.-its like a formula mix and in the end if you use an old formula you get the old formula all over again.

NO [frick] NO !!!!!!

A character returning from the dead? How original...
steelo - 7/2/2012, 10:46 AM
@cyked Joss Whedon ripped off Claremont word for word. Find the issues that correspond with Joss Whedon's X-Men and you'll see I am right. Claremont knows the X-Men the best.

@Nomis

She is so proud of being a mutant and part of the X-Men that she discarded her "Marvel Girl" codename to use her civilian name.

Also this:

They should hook Logan up with Jean. Oh the sparks that would fly between Scott/Emma/Logan/Jean.
Shadowelfz - 7/2/2012, 11:28 AM
However, the return of Jean Grey might be the most surprising change yet! -Josh

Ha! You mean the least surprising. Its cool though, I like the character and it will be interesting seeing her and scott meet again. I have a feeling she will hook up with wolverine this time.
hueyfreeman - 7/2/2012, 11:39 AM
...and then in a year or two we can do this same song and dance all over again.
DukeAcureds - 7/2/2012, 11:40 AM
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
She was supposed to be dead for [frick]ing real this time. I can't tell you how pleased I was when The Pheonix Force had nothing to do with the return of Jean Grey in AVX and instead crteated The Pheonix Five. She'll only come back to die all over again. This is beyond silly. The last death was so damned perfect. Grant's New X-Men and Pheonix - Endsong and what have you, all coinciding with the final X-Men movie? Perfect. Don't bring her back AGAIN you blasted graverobbers!!!
And the relaunch thing? Who could not have guessed that. After The New 52, it was entirely inevitable. But don't worry, Marvel's moronic legacy renumbering will put everything back to normal again.
The convolution of 616 continuity used to be it's great strength, but if they bring back Jean Grey again and kill her off again (or worse; just keep her alive indefinately) then it's no more respectable than a damned warners cartoon.
CherryBomb - 7/2/2012, 11:58 AM
YAY.
I love Jean. But I hate when the Phoenix force possesses her. She's a character thats strong enough and she doesn't need some overpowered, boring force to make an impact.

Get rid of the Phoenix. I'm sick of seeing it.
DukeAcureds - 7/2/2012, 12:03 PM
[frick] it they should restart 616 entirely, before they rape it any further.
kirynthemighty - 7/2/2012, 12:10 PM
guys they're just relaunching at #1....no reboot. I love me some Jean, I hope that they make her look at what Scott has done and she goes to Logan...that would be tits. Oh and there is some dirty cat fight between her and Emma. :D
antbwan - 7/2/2012, 12:12 PM
Hope Summers is Jean Grey Summers!
kirynthemighty - 7/2/2012, 12:48 PM
@KamenRiderJ22 he has been with that reporter chick or whatever, but I think thats it. I do agree with you though, what would be a good story line to start that whole thing off with.
Dunejedi - 7/2/2012, 12:52 PM
Meh. I really only like Jean as Phoenix and I can't see them resurrecting her that way. They'd just have to kill her again right away. I do like the idea of her and logan hooking up, though. Good call, alekesam. Cyclops would lose his sh!t. If he's still around, that is. We'll see.
Cosmo - 7/2/2012, 2:14 PM
yossarian has got it right. Redheads are the only way to go. REAL redheads.
jimoakley666 - 7/2/2012, 2:43 PM
I'd love to see the X-Men go back to a variation on the Morrison era uniforms. That looks really suited Jean, Cyclops Beast and Wolverine.
mgeoff88 - 7/2/2012, 2:57 PM
I didn't realize she was gone from the comics so long. I'm glad they're bringing her back.

That's another reason I disliked X-Men: TLS so much. They killed off her and Cyclops. I mean really?

Those were the original members of the first ever X-Men team... Anyways, I'm curious to see how she'll be brought back.

Wildaniel - 7/2/2012, 4:35 PM
I miss Jean, she was one of my favorite X-Men.
REDSTORM - 7/2/2012, 5:12 PM
Assuming he survives to see her again, I wonder how Cyclops is going to react when she returns.
