Will THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Be Nominated For "Best Picture" At The 2013 Academy Awards?

"I don’t think it can be nominated as best picture," said one member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences on Saturday following a screening of The Dark Knight Rises. Hit the jump for more details and opinions on whether the film is likely to be recognised next year.

As a result of the tragic events in Aurora, Colorado, on Thursday night, the screening of The Dark Knight Rises on Saturday for members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences was a fairly sombre affair with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that those in attendance apparently left, "quickly and without much discussion." Academy President Tom Sherak tells the site, "We knew we were going to have a huge crowd even before the tragedy; a lot of people had been talking about coming. Even I, who normally would not come to this side of town to go to a movie, was planning on coming before the tragedy because it felt like a big summer movie and I wanted to see it. After what happened you aren’t going to stand there and talk about it." He adds, "Normally, I think there would be more conversation afterward. (During the screening) very few people moved. It’s a very intense movie and it played really, really well."

However, according to another member of the Academy who was there, the film received "only sporadic applause" and the lack of response is not a good sign that it will be nominated for the big Oscars come awards season, with one member saying that, "people were kind of disappointed. It wasn’t because of (Colorado). I just don’t think that this picture will get any nominations (beyond technical nods)." Another says, "There was nothing remarkable about the acting. I don’t think it can be nominated as best picture."

Before you write off The Dark Knight Rises being nominated for either the "Best Picture" or "Best Director" Oscars, there are a few things to take into consideration. For a start, there are literally THOUSANDS of other Academy members who have yet to watch the film. Also, the lack of a nomination for The Dark Knight in 2008 led the Academy to expand the amount of films which can be nominated in order to include more mainstream pictures. Christopher Nolan is a director who has been snubbed by them on more than one occasion and while the ever unreliable Rotten Tomatoes score may lead you to believe that the film hasn't been met with a hugely positive response (does anyone really put a lot of weight behind the opinions of critics from "The Ooh Tray", "Ok! Magazine" and the "Kansas City Star"?!) it currently holds an 'A' CinemaScore and has been met with an almost unanimously positive response from fans and movie lovers alike. Do you think it will be nominated at next year's Academy Awards? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place and be sure to read my 5* review of the film by clicking HERE.

I really don't see the big deal in this at all. They hardly set out to win Academy awards with this film. The only reason this getting hype for it is not because of TDKR's own merits, but because TDK was snubbed in 2009.
marvel72 - 7/23/2012, 5:42 PM
don't know i haven't seen it,but from what i've seen from trailers alone i'd have to say no.
WesleyGibson - 7/23/2012, 5:46 PM
Hells Bells. Still haven't got to see it...

@ wesleygibson

i'm going wednesday afternoon.
Asterisk - 7/23/2012, 5:51 PM
I don't think it will, and I loved it.
superotherside - 7/23/2012, 5:55 PM
I haven't seen it yet, but I'm sure I'll like it.

That said, I personally think that Joss Whedon needs to get best director. He made an impossible movie, one that everyone said would fail and have too many story lines. Yet he crafted it into the best CBM, one of the best movies, and the 3rd highest grossing movie. Yeah, so I think he needs to get that acknowledged. Best picture? Well, IDK. The Hobbit still has to come out and while I think the Avengers is probably the best movie ever, not everyone does so yeah, perhaps not. But personally, I think it even deserves best picture.

Oh and no contest on best CGI etc.

Hope you enjoy the movie man. I gotta plan a time to go see it soon.
sonofsamadams - 7/23/2012, 6:03 PM
Anything's possible. Nobody expected Return of the King to get nominated for best picture, let alone win the crown.
TheTaskmaster - 7/23/2012, 6:04 PM
Yeah if TDK didn't get nominated TDKR won't either. TDKR was not nearly as good as TDK.
Spidey91 - 7/23/2012, 6:05 PM
I'll probably sound like a prick, but I hope not. I don't want THEM to have any more kool-aid to drink :P
SHHH - 7/23/2012, 6:10 PM
It Was Pretty Good.. Don't Tell Anyone Then I'll Be A Nolanite ;)

Called it in my article.
dirtygymsocks - 7/23/2012, 6:11 PM
I'm with you superotherside. TDKR was good but it really wasn't that great and their was no performance that blew me away like Heath's Joker.
Theodora - 7/23/2012, 6:11 PM
"nothing remarkable about the acting?? "

We're they watching the same movie?

Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman and Micheal Caine were all flawless in their preformances.

They all deserves nom's, hell, Hathaway deserves the actual award.

Oscars are full of shit nowadays. If TDK didn't win best picture, this won't.
Chewtoy - 7/23/2012, 6:12 PM
Why is there that laughable Tweet tacked on about how The Dark Knight Rises would have made $230m if it had been in 3D? It has nothing to do with the Oscar stuff, and the math is mind-bogglingly bad.

$70m in 3D upcharges off of $160m in regular tickets? What percentage did he think would have seen TDKR in 3D, and how much extra did he think they were paying to do so?

darkastheknight - 7/23/2012, 6:14 PM
Wait, is this the same Academy that gave Best Picture to that silly, gimmicky, overrated picture 'The Artist', or that chose 'Shakespeare in Love' over 'Saving Private Ryan', or that honored 'The King's Speech' over 'The Social Network'? Is it also the same Academy that robbed Nolan of a Best Director nomination for he best film of 2010, 'Inception'?

Nuff' said.
TheDesertGorilla - 7/23/2012, 6:15 PM
[frick] the oscars. Could care less about those hollywood snobs patting themselves on the back.
Bodwulf - 7/23/2012, 6:16 PM
Michael Caine should get best supporting actor! Hands down!
puchito - 7/23/2012, 6:16 PM
TDK....was awesome....this......this was a travesty....that I only wish I saw it on bootleg...and not given them my 10 bucks to see.....
Theodora - 7/23/2012, 6:17 PM
I reckon Hathaway is picking up Best Actress this year for Les Mis, but she deserves a Best Supporting Actress nom for Selina. Her acting in her opening scene is incredible.
SUPERBATSPIDERMAN - 7/23/2012, 6:17 PM
I think it is possible because Nolan has gained some popularity since The Dark Knight and this movie was fantastic. I think in a lot of ways it was better than the Dark Knight. The only reason people prefer The Dark Knight is Heath Ledger's Joker which I have to admit he was a better villain than Bane but all of the actors in the Dark Knight Rises did absolutely amazing jobs. If it isn't nominated for best picture Christian Bale should be nominated for best actor and Michael Caine should be nominated for best supporting actor also Anne Hathaway for best supporting actress because she was fantastic and stole every scene she was in kind of like Ledger did.
darkastheknight - 7/23/2012, 6:17 PM
"There was nothing remarkable about the acting. I don’t think it can be nominated as best picture."

???????????????

Huh? Someone please translate that.
Priest - 7/23/2012, 6:18 PM
Nope, not gonna happen.
Chewtoy - 7/23/2012, 6:20 PM
@darkastheknight:

The largest body of the MPAA is actors, I believe, hence acting showcases are most likely to get best picture nominations. When there aren't any notable performances in a picture, other actors aren't as likely to be impressed with the work as a whole and want to nominate it. They'd much rather nominate something with a juicy role or two in it.
brewtownpsych - 7/23/2012, 6:20 PM
i don't think it will get nommed for any of the big 3 (script, direction or picture). it might get cinematography and perhaps some acting noms, like Michael Caine (he's due, and the industry sometimes likes to give awards on the strength of an entire career), or Oldman, JGL or even Hathaway -- though i personally wouldn't agree with Hathaway. Zimmer might get nominated for best score certainly.
puchito - 7/23/2012, 6:21 PM
I have No...Idea what movie you guys watched....but Rise sucked.....The Dark Knight was Awesome....this was a director that had No respect for the source material...I cant wait for the Reboot
soforizo - 7/23/2012, 6:23 PM
That Sciretta fellow mustn't have been very good in math.
NOID - 7/23/2012, 6:24 PM
As a huge batman fan, i hate to say this but.. it doesn't deserve an oscar.... This is not the best picture of the year.
WinterSoldier24 - 7/23/2012, 6:26 PM
I don't understand why people are so hung up on awards like the Oscars. What does it matter if this film or a Marvel film is nominated for an award? It's just another form of dick measuring for die-hard fanboys on the Internet that had nothing WHATSOEVER to do with this film, or any like it. So what if it doesn't get an award? The world isn't gonna end. Giving gold statues to millionaires is pretty redundant anyway.
Chewtoy - 7/23/2012, 6:27 PM
It could get a pity nomination if the field is weak this year and they need some popular choices to fill it all in. This would basically be a mea culpa for leaving "The Dark Knight" off of the nominees list a few years ago, and possibly some consolation for the movie being linked with a tragedy. Without those two instances, however, I don't think there would be any thought of nominating a summer blockbuster like this.

If anything, look for The Hobbit to steal award attention away from TDKR at the end of the year.
Spidey31 - 7/23/2012, 6:28 PM
CBMs never get nominated becasue CBMs are not worthy other than TDK films but they still don't get noms. I doubt any film will this year, maybe TDKR and maybe TASM for best actor(Andrew Garfield)
Jaywing - 7/23/2012, 6:28 PM
I do not understand the 'disappointment' in this film... If this film is just average, then 95% o movies must be terrible
AsianAvenger - 7/23/2012, 6:29 PM
It doesn't have to win but in my opinion it should at least be nominated
MitchConner - 7/23/2012, 6:29 PM
Fizuck no....that movie sucked...sorry, how am I looking forward to Total Recal a week after theories release and not my 6th screening of this movie? Oh, yea, cuz it sucked
Wildaniel - 7/23/2012, 6:29 PM
Best movie ever, nough said.

@catwoman1 where did you get that icon? Can you post that pic?
DevilHulk666 - 7/23/2012, 6:30 PM
Hathaway is a hack! she must be sucking a lot of dick in Hollywood because she can't act for shit
MitchConner - 7/23/2012, 6:30 PM
Sorry....but this shizit sucked!
Theodora - 7/23/2012, 6:30 PM
Best Supporting Actress - Anne Hathaway
Best Supporting Actor - Micheal Caine
Best Art Direction
Best Costume Design
Best Visual Effects
Best Score
Best Sound Editing

Wild Cards:

Best Supporting Actor - Tom Hardy or Gary Oldman
Best Picture
Best Director
BIGBMH - 7/23/2012, 6:31 PM
TDK deserved to win best picture, but I really don't think TDKR needs to be nominated.
Supes17 - 7/23/2012, 6:31 PM
I actually agree with Intruder's Avengers nomitaion predictions..

The Academy still hasn't given CBM's the respect they deserve. They give them technical nominations so that the fans and general audience watch the show and dont lose their shit
MightyThor1 - 7/23/2012, 6:33 PM
the academy is ran by the illuminati who hate Nolan for exposing them in his films just like they did Kubrick! [frick] those devil worshippers!
MitchConner - 7/23/2012, 6:34 PM
Catwoman 1, love your pic, and AH was good, but this movie was awful, who the fizuck likes this shizit? Im telling you, no one wanted this film more than me, but I'm sorry, I've already forgot it...for real, what was the plot again? Thats a real question, movie did leave a lasting impression like TDK...already forgotten, seriously
myparentsaredead - 7/23/2012, 6:35 PM
The Oscars haven't been relevant for quite a few years, so it's kinda ehh to me either way. If it's nominated and/or wins, great. If not, I really don't care.
brewtownpsych - 7/23/2012, 6:37 PM
avengers might win best comedy at the golden globes ... ;)
MitchConner - 7/23/2012, 6:39 PM
And M Caine as best supporting actor? For what movie? Not this one? Maybe his performance in this movie put inside a soap opera..:his performance wouldve shined there
Supes17 - 7/23/2012, 6:39 PM
The Dark Knight should have been nominated for Best Picture.
And Iron Man deserved more nominations.

My predictions for TDKR
Best picture (the only CBM that has that chance unfortunately)
Best Screenplay (Nominated, wont win. It wasnt Nolan's best)
Best Score(not certain about this one either)
Best Art Design
Best Cinematography
Best Sound Editing(Not sure because of Bane's problem) sound mixing
Visual effects.

I think Michael Caine deserves a nomination. Hathaway was brilliant but not Oscar worthy like Heath. Christian Bale gave his best performance
FilmsFan - 7/23/2012, 6:39 PM
I don't think it will win!

But 100% nomination!

It's an extraordinary film, on dozens of levels!!

TDK was snubbed but we all knew that TDK was NEVER in a million years gona win Best Picture!
This time case is different!
It might just might win! But for absolute surety it's gona get Nominated for Best Picture & Director! If it didn't.... Then really what NOLAN should do or make to even get a nomination.
It's really absurd!
I can't believe he hasn't EVEB been nominated!
It's just an unbelieveable thing!

This time is a MUST!
If they don't even nominate him this time ....then I wish he never ever wins & if he does then he shouldn't accept it! It will be a message to Snobby & obnoxious Acadamy Voters!
APPLE IS ABOUT TO FALL FAR FROM TREE : they can catch it this time!
WinterSoldier24 - 7/23/2012, 6:41 PM
@ToDandy Ah, gotcha. Should've realized... Lol
