Peter Jackson Enters Talks To Helm A THIRD Instalment Of THE HOBBIT

Peter Jackson teased plans for a third movie after revealing that they wrapped production on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There And Back Again with too much footage. It is now being reported that the filmmaker will turn the planed two-film adaptation into a trilogy.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that sources close to the production of The Hobbit have told them that the two-film adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien story is indeed set to be turned into a trilogy. There was talk of this during the San Diego Comic-Con a few weeks ago, although nothing more came of it and it was dismissed as little more than a rumour. However, discussions are now ongoing between Warner Bros. and director Peter Jackson, producer Fran Walsh and writer-producer Philippa Boyens as they attempt to work out the logistics of how another film would work (for example, signing new deals with the cast members). If a third instalment is made, it would require additional shooting in New Zealand next summer. "If we’re going to do it, we have to make a decision soon. It’s strongly driven by the filmmakers’ desire to tell more of the story," the source tells the site. "It’s about taking the chance to tell more of the incredible tale with the cast we have assembled." Stretching the story out into three movies certainly makes sense for the studio as it obviously increases their revenue. Do you think turning The Hobbit into a trilogy is the right idea? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

I have a bad feeling about this ...

How can they stretch it to three movies and have each movie have a satisfying story arc as well as being part of a trilogy?

I hope this works. Must be three 2 hour movies.

This is stupid. There isn't three films worth of story in the book. I've been really excited until now. This isn't about "too much footage"... They'd just milk it MORE with extended home-releases down the road if it were. They're gonna bleed this thing of every penny they can.

It rubs me the wrong way, but with 'LOTR' and 'King Kong', I trust his judgement.

I think splitting the book into two films is enough. If anything, that extra footage could be incorporated into an extended version like they did with the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy. Or just leave it, if it's unnecessary.

Although, if they're going to do it anyway, at least we can trust Peter Jackson to make it work.

I'd rather have two 3 hour movies than three 2 hour movies. Part of what I liked about the LOTR movies was that there length made them feel epic. A 2 hour Hobbit of any entry will dull down that feeling.

I trust Peter Jackson... but I dont see how. The Hobbit really isnt that big a book. this sounds to me like it might drag a lot.
the final harry potter movie wouldve been a lot more powerful if they didnt split it. Part 1 i may never watch again. its boring.
This is a sad attempt to cash in and I see why....Warner bros.
Damn i hate WB more than any studio. they ruin EVERYTHING

yeaa not really necessary. If 3 books could be done with three movies, why need 1 book to be done with three movies.
CBMJamie
CBMJamie - 7/24/2012, 6:22 PM
This is nothing more than a scheme to make more money. The 3 Lord of the Rings books were made into a trilogy that was able to include all of the elements that made the books great and went on to become what many count a the best movie trilogy of all time.

The Hobbit is one book. Making a trilogy from one book is genius madness from Warner Brothers. They will make more money from it, but could lose support and a large amount of fans if they push through with this idea.

Zarog
Zarog - 7/24/2012, 6:26 PM
Okay, I could see 4 and possibly even 5 hours of good film in The Hobbit, but SERIOUSLY? This is a cash grab plain and simple. The movies will have to be 2 hours or less. If they try to make this as long as the LOTR trilogy, then it will BLOW.

calling BS on every single one of you that said you won't go see the movies if there are 3 of them. you will, no question. and when you do, please wear a shirt to the third one that says "I'm peter jackson's personal biotch."

It seems Peter is on board producing a third film. If he feels that he can make a third film with a good story than I'm all in. I think he might use a third film to help bridge The Hobbit to the LOTR.
