BOX OFFICE: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES And TOTAL RECALL To Battle For #1 This Weekend

Well, it's fair to say that not many people will have seen this coming! Despite analysts predicting yesterday that Total Recall looked set to hit the #3 spot at the North American box office, VERY early estimates now have it as going head-to-head with The Dark Knight Rises for #1.

Deadline reports that Len Wiseman's Total Recall remake looks set to give The Dark Knight Rises a run for its money at the North America box office this weekend as matinee trends indicate that the weekend will pan out far differently than previously reported (read details on that by clicking HERE). Total Recall is on course to gross between $9.5 million - $12.5 millon today and $26 million - $32 million for the weekend (that's an awful lot higher than the prediction which had it on course for a paltry $20 million opening for third place behind Diary Of A Wimpy Kid 3: Dog Days). Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan's epic finale to his Batman trilogy is predicted to have a weekend total of $27 million - $33 million. A slightly better estimate, but a VERY close contest between the two films.

Those estimates for Total Recall are still horrible for a film that cost $200 million to make.

I found the original Total Recall on Blu Ray for $5 at Walmart a couple weeks ago. The old movie is better, and owning it is cheaper than the cost of admission to the new one.
GreenHalJordan - 8/3/2012, 1:53 PM
But so is the Total Recall remake (PG-13 i mean)
Godzillafart - 8/3/2012, 1:55 PM
@Azazel1: Early reviews were terrible. Looks like hungover action bubble gum download to me.

@Azazel1, that sounds like a slap at Batman.

Colin Farrell took a 2-3 year hiatus from Hollywood after a string of sh*tty movies, looks another hiatus is in the near future for him.

Isn't just reporting the final numbers enough? Do people really care this much to want to know projects three weeks in?
santoanderson - 8/3/2012, 2:05 PM
"Hope it doesn't suck too bad."

No joke, I've spoken with three other people who said the same thing before Total Recall. The studio should just put that at the end of the trailers: "Total Recall: Let's Hope it Doesn't Suck Too Bad".

My brother who works at the movie theater saw Total Recall already and said its a good popcorn action movie, just like the first one....

No one cares about Total Recall. Whats happening today is Recall is getting business from the scant few who have such poor judgement they actually want to see this crap.

Word of mouth and lack of interest will cause a big drop off Sat + Sun.
SteveRogersSon - 8/3/2012, 2:23 PM
Yeah another article to have people argue over and over. Aren't you glad you HIT THAT JUMP!
Sabconth - 8/3/2012, 2:26 PM
@Ashes2Phoenix

That was really fu*king good!

Nice balance between all 3 films and the chant over the ending was superb.
soforizo - 8/3/2012, 2:32 PM
Haven't seen it, but Total Recall looks like a good popcorn flick. So people are complaining that it isn't very different from the original, but I wouldn't go in trying to compare the two. It might do good with the <30yr old group, who haven't seen or don't remember the original.

Why do people continue to put stock in the predictions?

They are so consistently wrong.

I'll wait for the ACTUAL numbers to come in.
126thst - 8/3/2012, 2:36 PM
this movie will crash and burn.
Godzillafart - 8/3/2012, 2:36 PM
@TheBigBoss917: That is one silly poll IGN put together. They state it is supposed to determine which movie people preferred, but they never ask "Which movie did you prefer?"

I would have voted exactly as the results came out, but enjoyed the Avengers much more.

I guess final world wide box office will answer the question.
UrbanKnight - 8/3/2012, 2:38 PM
If i hear its about as good as the OG one ill watch it.
If not its a rental.

TheBigBoss917 - 8/3/2012, 2:45 PM
@Godzillafart What? by that logic Transoformers 2 is "better" than Spider Man 2
RamonSuarez - 8/3/2012, 2:49 PM
Seeing remakes like and Robocop this make me sad. They are cynical money grabs to cash in on previous ideas with minimal work.

The original Verhoven Total Recall was very raw and R-rated. It had style and even managed to make aspects of Phillip K. Dick's work about the illusory nature of "reality" accessible to mainstream audiences without going off the rail in a typical Phillip K. Dick way.

This just looks like a watered down PG version with nothing special to add to the original. Its like an artist who traces around a previous masterpiece and takes credit for the replicated sketch.
RamonSuarez - 8/3/2012, 2:50 PM
@TheBigBoss917

You do realize that the IGN poll wasn't dealing with a substantive or representative sample size, right?
Godzillafart - 8/3/2012, 2:55 PM
@TheBigBoss917: Touche'. I stand corrected.

However, my original point stands. Those four questions in no way determine which movie more people preferred.
Sabconth - 8/3/2012, 3:01 PM
@Yossarian

@Godzillafart

I suppose you're right, if they had another question asking which movies people preferred the results would probably be much closer.

Still doesn't change the fact that most users on the site thought TDKR had the better story and villain. Although those things aren't as important to everyone.

The Budget of Total Recall is 125 million dollar and not 200 million

IrfonW - 8/3/2012, 3:16 PM
If total recall beats batman, it looks unlikely to make a billion?
Chewtoy - 8/3/2012, 3:20 PM
Deadline also has an article saying that "Ted" is knocking off Batman for #1 in just about every overseas market it's playing in.
Godzillafart - 8/3/2012, 3:23 PM
@Sabconth: I think that TDKR undeniably had a better story. And that people loved Avengers in spite of it being story-light doesn't say anything about how important story is to viewers in general.

Avengers gave viewers something we have not really seen before, and you didn't have to be a fanboy to have a nerdgasm at seeing all those characters together in one smartly written, funny as hell action packed romp.

It really was one of the biggest event movies ever, and the most fun I've had in the theater since childhood.

MisterFixit - 8/3/2012, 3:59 PM
so, rapported to TDK's first week, TDKR has lost $13M, in the second $19M and in the 3rd it's going to lose another $13-15M. Foreign it's going similarly. At least the movie deserves to reach a billion, but now it's clear that statistically is impossible. Mathematics is not an opinion (not even Chuck Norris opinion).

@tea -- never thought about the Shredder connection before. Both are on my list as is Predator.
