Between the aftermath of the shooting in Aurora, Colorado, and the Olympics, analysts are having a hard time pinning down which film will come out on top this weekend, but it now appears as if The Dark Knight Rises will beat Total Recall for the #1 spot.

On Thursday, a trusted box office analyst had Total Recall down as finishing the weekend in third place, while yesterday's matinee trends had the remake on course to battle it out with The Dark Knight Rises for the top spot. Well, courtesy of Deadline and IMDb, we now have the official figures for Friday which shed some light on how the weekend should play out in North America. Len Wiseman's Total Recall earned $9.2 million, meaning it should gross around $25.5M in total. A Sony spokesperson said, "The film performed in line with tracking and expectations," although a C+ CinemaScore isn't expected to help its chances at exceeding those expectations. Meanwhile, The Dark Knight Rises made an impressive $10.4 million on its third Friday, with an expected weekend gross of around $35 million (taking its domestic cume to north of $353 million).

I think it will struggle. My guess is it will slow down now, although I hope it doesn't. Let's get two CBMs in the billion $ club!

I am a big time Batman fan I thought the shooting had not effect on people seeing this movie at all. I was visiting one of offices that I cover for my job and I was shocked when I asked "How did you guys like the final Batman movie?" the majority said they did not go see it because of the shootings!

Hmmm makes me wonder if the shootings did effect the box office numbers.

@JoeMomma29

Last week Nielsen Ratings had a report saying 20-25% of moviegoers would not go to the cinema because of what happened.

Coincidence or not, this weekend the gross will be 25% lower than the same weekend last year (Olympics maybe play a part on this too).

Recall was terrible! The Silocone tits and Bryan Cranston were the only good things about it.
I'm still wondering, is he in the matrix or in Wonderland? Is he awake, or asleep?
And the last fight scene with him and Beckinsale was pathetic! They forgot to end her character, so they threw in a 20 second fight scene, like the Engineer in Prometheus. Ugh, the fighting was terrible, it was cut in so many places, too many angles, didn't know what was going on with the Cranston/Collin fight.
If they ever answered who he was, I didn't catch it cause I fell asleep, but I don't think they did cause Bryan mentions it in the end, "You don't know who you are, yet you fight." The plot was too tedious and dull.

Overall, it is like iRobot (Cyber Synthetic Robots) mixed with Lockout (Scenery) mixed with Matrix (The whole "believe what you want to believe, it's all in the mind" thing) mixed with District 9 (The weird thing they ride to the Core, it looks like the ship in D-9) with a confusing storyline like SuckerPunch, AKA [CLUSTER[frick]].

@Ror Ya! I'll slow down now!
But I think 400-425 is almost certain in US for TDKR!
Hence it need around 600 million in foreign markets to reach 1 Billion!

& that's not that difficult!
The amount of action in this one compared to TDK is huge! & as TDK managed 468 in foreign countries, I think TDKR (hopefully) will do 125-150 million more!! Around 600!!

Actually when I saw it first time I just told my self that it had no chance of doing good business, just cuz it's so so Dark & Brutal in action! There's nothing like "implied death" or "Stylized Violence" ... it's plain & clean death & destruction. Which isn't too good for business when kids & family audience is concerned!
I saw TASM on its 2nd weekend (2nd time) & more than half of it was filled with kids or teens & their parents!
When i saw TDKR on its 2nd Weekend (4th time); believe me only 3 kids were there & few teens; while it's a huge hall: like 200+ capacity!
It Made me worry!

But even being so brutal, serious & dark it's doing really really good!
I mean to a degree JOKER was a funny character; & here nothing is "funny"!!

So as its already over 600 worldwide; I think it's an incredible achievement taking all those factor into consideration!

I hope it does & now it seriously got a chance to do it; & if it did...
- We will have 2 Billion$ SuperHero films in a year!
- & 2 BATMAN films over a Billion$!!

True Ckal I can see your reasoning, I live in New Mexico and I was just shocked to hear not one not two but six people saying they would not go see it because of the shootings. What was more shocking was their reasoning why they would not go see it. They thought that Batman had influence over the shooter.

That is why it makes me wonder how much these shootings did effect the earnings of this movie.

TDKR is already over $630m worldwide. It's outpacing and outperforming TDK overseas. BOM doesn't update the overseas numbers until Sunday. However ScreenDaily does report midweek/weekend overseas numbers. TDKR had a gross of $304m heading into Thursday and this weekend.

It's on pace for 450-460m Domestic and 600m Foreign. Plus it will have a release in China which wasn't the case for TDK.

I hope the dark knight comes out number 1 spot. With batman and avengers doing well. Maybe hollywood will realise the money spent on total recall could have been spent on something like flash or Dr Strange. Just saying. I would really love to see a flash movie.

But will it catch Avengers? Since I seem to recall so many on this website saying--no, promising--that TDKR would do better than Avengers?

So now I guess it'll be back to the default "Box Office doesn't mean anything" right (except when it's Dark Knight trumping everyone else)?

Good for the TDKR but count me as one who does not care if it makes a billion. Money is not everything as the Transformer's series has shown us. Few if any would pick that trilogy of Nolan's. TDKR was a good movie and a Nolan made a great trilogy but now wanting to move on to Man of Steel, JLA movie and new Bat films. I was always a Marvel comic collector but DC animated and Nolan have me watching DC toons and enjoying it.

Bad movie or not, I blame weak marketing. The trailer looks cool and it has a solid cast. Prometheus was lame as hell, yet they managed to create a buzz around it. Total Recall should have at least been able to open big.

RAMONSUAREZ@,
no kidding, people are sure trying to spin TDKR as a runaway
BO star! It isn't! It won't have legs like TDK. It
shouldn't have legs like TDK, it doesn't deserve it!
I liked TDK, it deserved all of it's accolades!

Man, the NOLANITES sure like to blame the shooting for
the under-performing of TDKR!
That is sick, untrue, making sick excuses!

BO doesn't tell the whole story but TDKR is just not
family friendly like THE AVENGERS!

It's not an upbeat entertaining superhero movie!
I thought superheroes were suppose to give us hope?
TDKR just depresses me!

There is a reason WARNERS is rebooting BATMAN, to try
and fit it back into heroic superheroes!

Even SINGER'S inaccurate X-MEN movie gave us hope at
the end that heroes will save the world, that
superheroes saved the world and all of humanity.

to health by good people, has BATMAN coming back and kicking
AZRAEL'S butt for killing people as BATMAN and giving the
BATMAN name/reputation a bad name and becoming the protector

HOPE!
