COMICS: The Marvel NOW! Relaunch - What We Know So Far

After a week of announcements and numerous rumours, no one could blame you for struggling to keep up with which creators will be on which titles this October and November. Well, here's a round-up of everything we know so far about the planned Marvel NOW! relaunch.

By Josh Wilding - 8/6/2012
• Over 20 titles will be relaunched, but Marvel NOW! is not a reboot in the same vein as last year's "The New 52" by DC Comics. Instead, it is just a shake-up of creative teams and a new direction (and in some cases, new-look) for the heroes in the post Avengers Vs. X-Men universe.0

• Rick Remender (Uncanny X-Force) and John Cassaday (Astonishing X-Men) will be teaming up for the Marvel NOW! flagship series, Uncanny Avengers. The book will star Captain America, Thor, Scarlet Witch, Havok, Rogue and Wolverine and the first arc will feature the team taking on the Red Skull from WWII.

• Jonathan Hickman (Fantastic Four) and Jerome Opena (Uncanny X-Men) will be teaming up for The Avengers, a book which will reportedly feature a cast of 18 heroes. Meanwhile, Hickman will also be writing New Avengers, although there are currently no details as to what we should expect from that series.

• Brian Michael Bendis (Spider-Men) and Stuart Immonen (Fear Itself) will be teaming up for All-New X-Men, a series which will see the original five X-Men - Cyclops, Jean Grey, Angel, Beast and Iceman - arriving in the present as teenagers. While it sounds like a limited series, this will in fact be a new ongoing.

• Last week saw the release of several one-word teaser images released by Marvel promoting the debut of several new titles in November, details of which are all listed below.

• "Invincible" - Kieron Gillen (Journey Into Mystery) and Greg Land (Uncanny X-Men will be teaming up for a new Iron Man series.

• "Worthy" - Jason Aaron (Wolverine & The X-Men) and Esad Ribic (Uncanny X-Force) will be teaming up for a new Thor series.

• "Indestructible" - Mark Waid (Daredevil) and Lenil Yu (Secret Invasion) will be teaming up for a new Hulk series.

• "Chimichangas" - Brian Posehn (Anger Management), Gerry Duggan (Attack of the Show!) and Tony Moore (Venom) will be teaming up for a new Deadpool series.

• "Soldier" - Rick Remender (Secret Avengers) and John Romita Jr. (Kick-Ass 2) will be teaming up for a new Captain America series.

• "Family" - Matt Fraction (The Mighty Thor) and Mark Bagley (Avengers Assemble) will be teaming up for a new Fantastic Four series.

• "Extended" - Matt Fraction (The Defenders) and Mike Allred (Daredevil) will be teaming up for what appears to be a new FF series.

• "Legacy" - Simon Spurrier (X-Men: Curse of the Mutants - Smoke and Blood) and Tan Eng Huat (Punisher) will be teaming up for what appears to be a new X-Men Legacy series, although that is pure speculation at this point.

• Despite these creative team changes, we do know that some of the writers above will be staying on titles they currently work on. Ed Brubaker (Captain America) will remain on Winter Soldier, Jason Aaron will continue to write Wolverine & The X-Men and Mark Waid will still handle writing duties on Daredevil. However, the fate of many other books remains unknown.

• Currently unconfirmed rumours include Mark Waid taking over Avengers Assemble, Brian Michael Bendis writing a new Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing series and Frank Cho both writing and pencilling Wolverine. There has also been talk of a new Nova series.

• One title that Marvel have been VERY quiet about is The Amazing Spider-Man. With current writer Dan Slott promising some very big (and controversial) changes in issue #700, it is unclear whether that means he might be planning to actually kill off Peter Parker, especially as the hero is getting a new sidekick in the form of "Alpha"...

DrRockit13 - 8/6/2012, 10:10 AM
I wonder if it is a whole new thing liek the new 52 or just new titles with the back story the same
HeadPool420 - 8/6/2012, 10:11 AM
I guess rebooting and shaking things up is the cool things to do in the comic industry.
YOUNGBL00D - 8/6/2012, 10:12 AM
Shouldnt that be Uncanny Avengers In the second bullet
Jordanstine - 8/6/2012, 10:12 AM
@MrCrowley

"RELAUNCH" does not equal "reboot", especially if back stories and character origins are not being altered.
DrRockit13 - 8/6/2012, 10:12 AM
is that cyclops in the red, next to wolverine
FireKnightRises - 8/6/2012, 10:15 AM
@Hybrid0027
yeah spidey suit is obviously different in that pic
GoILL - 8/6/2012, 10:17 AM
Liking that Iron Man cover.
Carloshll726 - 8/6/2012, 10:24 AM
Responding to Hybrid0027's comment: I think Marvel's done red & black on Spidey before...
UVLantern - 8/6/2012, 10:25 AM
I wish Marvel would lower their prices to $2.99 rather than $3.99 an issue.
DanteSparda - 8/6/2012, 10:25 AM
Good Summary I didn't knew about the "Extended" teaser until now, BTW I don't think Peter Parker is going to die in issue #700, I'm almost sure Alpha is going to die (by Peter's fault), but it's too soon yet, perhaps the big change in #700 is a change in the status quo of Spidey, perhaps he moves from NY, or even changes his alter ego.

@YOUNGBL00D

Yes it should say Uncanny Avengers and not X-Men in the second paragraph.
GUNSMITH - 8/6/2012, 10:28 AM
CYCLOPS PHEONIX 5 SUIT LOOKS WAY COOLER, HOW THE HECK DOES HE SEE OUT OF THAT X?
TheAmazingAvenger - 8/6/2012, 10:29 AM
Seriously, how many idiots are on this site? The article just said that it was confirmed that MARVEL NOW is not a [frick]ing reboot, and you still have people saying it's a reboot and people asking if it's a reboot! Do you guys even know how to read? It's been said a million times that MARVEL NOW is not a reboot like DC's NEW 52! *FACEPALM*
Jayman109 - 8/6/2012, 10:30 AM
Hybrid0027,

Is that the real iron man cover? It looks awesome.
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 8/6/2012, 10:31 AM
Let me guess: By issue #20 of all of these new Arc's, it'll be hero vs. hero, right? Just leave Uncanny X-Force alone.
ATrueHero1987 - 8/6/2012, 10:41 AM
I love the Black/Gold IM armor more & more each time I see it. I want know if Marvel is going to bring back Uncanny X-Men but somone mentioned that Uncanny Avengers was going to take over for UXM.

Also, the guy in the red costume isn't Cyclops. According to Bendis.
elessarundomiel2382 - 8/6/2012, 10:42 AM
misprint there......flagship series is not "Uncanny X-men" its "Uncanny Avengers"
marvel72 - 8/6/2012, 10:44 AM
@ Hybrid0027

that iron man 1 cover reminds me abit of the armour that we'll see in iron man 3.
CaptainObvious - 8/6/2012, 10:45 AM
I will give up everything Marvel if Peter Parker is killed off.
marvel72 - 8/6/2012, 10:50 AM
looking forward to reading the indestructible hulk & seeing what they do with nova.
DanteSparda - 8/6/2012, 10:53 AM
@Marvel87

When did Bendis said that wasn't Cyclops?
UltraMarvelandDCfan - 8/6/2012, 10:53 AM
Will it be more controversial than One More Day?
If they kill Pete off, I will hate comic books, and only read Deadpool.
ATrueHero1987 - 8/6/2012, 10:57 AM
@DanteSparda He said it on his twitter not too long after that Marvel NOW group shot appeared.
95 - 8/6/2012, 11:10 AM
Good time to start.
CBMM1 - 8/6/2012, 11:19 AM
There is NO way they would kill off Peter Parker in 616.
That would be the single stuipidest (frick)ing thing ever. To kill off a character on their 50 anniversery deserves a direct trip to HELL!
JohnnyKrypton - 8/6/2012, 11:19 AM
"Notice how Spider-man's new outfit is RED & BLACK, not RED & BLUE"

That's how it was originally...just about everything else looks worse to me. Nothing like change for change's sake...

Oh well, at least they're still printing the Essentials :-(

DanteSparda - 8/6/2012, 11:23 AM
@Marvel87

True I found a caption of his tweet

But he was way to vague on that, most probably that character is still Scott Summers, Bendis may was refering to Cyclops as:
1- Changing name/alter-ego (which I hope is not X-Face).
2- That he's not the Cyclops that we expect, but his younger self.
XmutantX - 8/6/2012, 11:33 AM
wolverines gloves and boots look stupid
THOR looks awsum!
y is hulk wearing armour and what is that robot head commin outta his left shoulder??
i hate lil eyed spiderman
cap looks like movie cap
original x-men time traveling to now sounds really lame
ATrueHero1987 - 8/6/2012, 11:42 AM
@DanteSparda Yep it was that tweet & another one where Bendis was picking on Joe Q about saying the guy in the red was Cyclops.

Y'all it's official, I will subscribe to Iron Man by Gillen & Land. I'm already subscribed to Fantastic Four, so i will probably catch the first 8 issues of Fraction & Bagley's run on F4. The rest I will buy some of those first few issues(Uncanny Avengers, CA, Thor) to see how they go. More than likely, they'll be great too.
GUNSMITH - 8/6/2012, 11:44 AM
"CYCLOPS I GOT A GIRLS HAIR DEAL ON MY EYES.."

..."WHAT THE HECK IS THAT LOOK ALL ABOUT? ARE YOU CROSS EYED UNDER THERE?"
darktoast - 8/6/2012, 11:48 AM
"• Rick Remender (Uncanny X-Force) and John Cassaday (Astonishing X-Men) will be teaming up for the Marvel NOW! flagship series, Uncanny X-Men. Few errors:

Uncanny X-Men should be Uncanny Avengers.

Rogue is the Marvel Character or a thief, Rouge is something whores put on their cheeks to look more whorish.
DarthTesla - 8/6/2012, 11:48 AM
INDESTRUCTIBLE and CHIMICHANGAS will be epic. As will be Bendis' X-book.
OrganizedChaos - 8/6/2012, 11:51 AM
um is Spidey's suit red and black, or red and dark blue. Not sure if my computer settings are fooling me...
BaneNascent - 8/6/2012, 12:05 PM
Honestly I can say I love Marvel Comics but this does not intrest me in any way. I'll stay as far from this contant as I possibly can. I'll still give them money, but not for stunts like this. I'll buy the entire series of 'Essential' GN's before this garbage.

I know Marvel is in a tight spot. Comics are popular and there is so much history they have to stream line the content. But they push the stories in stupid directions and it's not better just 'different'.
manichispanic - 8/6/2012, 12:10 PM
rouge or rogue?
darktoast - 8/6/2012, 12:15 PM
All I want, and I don't care if it takes reboots to do it, is f'n continuity.

Reading the various X-titles during this nonsense AVX stuff is making my brain hurt. So Colossus is on a team with Storm in one title, and a f'n possessor of the Phoenix Force in another... WTF? Would it kill the company to get the writers together for a conference call and just hash out who's doing what in terms of characters? It drives me nuts when Spider-man is near dead in one comic, hanging out with Ms. Marvel in another, who is captive in another, while Wolverine is doing 85 different things (I know that multi-tasking is a power of his but still). Some cohesion would just make things feel more thought out.
Deadpool101 - 8/6/2012, 12:30 PM
so excited for the Deadpool and Nova series
Jordanstine - 8/6/2012, 12:43 PM
@blackandyellow

SuperPro's real identity is Tim Tebow!

HelaGood - 8/6/2012, 1:30 PM
Can't wait for Nova!!!

@NinjaCarm
wow...talk about a closed mind...
darkjoker1 - 8/6/2012, 2:41 PM
deadpool is going to be awesome :D
