FEATURE: Five Actors Who Could Play Aquaman In JUSTICE LEAGUE

Once considered a joke, writer Geoff Johns and artist Ivan Reis have completely turned that idea on its head with their Aquaman series in "The New 52" continuity. Here are five actors who I believe would be right choice to bring the character to the big screen in the planned Justice League movie.

This time last year, if you had asked any comic book reader to name their favourite superhero, it's unlikely that you would have heard too many of them mentioning Aquaman. However, "The New 52" relaunch by DC Comics arguably changed all of that. Openly acknowledging the fact that many consider him to be a joke, Geoff Johns has completely changed how fans look at the character and made him a pivotal member of the Justice League. So, I think it's fair to say that it's about time Aquaman got the chance to make his big screen debut. Below are five actors who I believe should be considered to do exactly that in the planned superhero team-up movie. Check them out below and sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

5. SAM WORTHINGTON

Sam Worthington has shown off his action chops in everything from Avatar to Terminator Salvation and Wrath of the Titans, so a superhero role is surely on the cards for the Australian actor at some point in the near future. Why not Aquaman? "The New 52" version of the hero is, for lack of a better word, a badass. All of the films mentioned above have shown that Worthington has absolutely no issues with characters like that, and while Aquaman may still considered a joke by some, the actor could really make him a believable and worthy member of the Justice League. Now if only he can do something about that "Austra-merican" accent of his...

4. JOSH HOLLOWAY

Considering the fact that he spent so much time in Lost wet and shirtless, Josh Holloway may seem like a clichéd choice. However, it can't be denied that he was one of the best parts of the series, and it's a damn shame that he hasn't been inundated with big screen roles since his time as 'Sawyer' came to a conclusion. Despite a disappointingly brief appearance in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, his action-packed few minutes in that movie were more than enough to show that he has a lot to offer a future blockbuster. Holloway most definitely looks the part and does in fact seem like one of the best choices for "The New 52" version of the character.

3. JENSEN ACKLES

Jensen Ackles was a fan favourite choice for Captain America before Chris Evans was cast in the role. Since then, his name has been put forward for many heroes, but his commitments to Supernatural have made those little more than wishful thinking from comic book lovers. After seven years on the CW show (and an upcoming eighth), now might finally be the time for Ackles to make the transition to the big screen, and during that time, he has shown himself to be capable of some fantastic performances and also a great talent behind the camera. Taking on a role like Aquaman would be a smart move for the actor, and it's hard to imagine him not doing an incredible job.

2. GARRETT HEDLUND

At one time rumoured to be in the running for both the roles of Captain America AND Daredevil, Garrett Hedlund is yet ANOTHER actor who it's hard to imagine still hasn't played a superhero on the big screen. He certainly came close with a leading role in TRON: Legacy, but has since been seen in much smaller projects. Like the rest of those mentioned on this list, he most definitely looks the part, and has just the right level of stardom for Warner Bros. to spin-off Aquaman into his own solo franchise while also keeping costs down. Hedlund is a likeable presence and at only 27, he has the youthful look associated with "The New 52" version if the studio are planning on going in that direction.

1. RYAN GOSLING

After starring in films such as Drive, The Ides of March and an upcoming Terrence Malick project, you could be forgiven for thinking Ryan Gosling would never take on a superhero role. Well, while it does seem unlikely on the surface, it's also hard to think of a reason why the actor would turn down a major blockbuster with the right talent involved. Of course, when that includes the writer of Gangster Squad Will Beall (who has written Justice League for Warner Bros.) then the odds of him accepting a role like Aquaman are all the more likely. Admittedly, he would be just as well cast as a character like Batman, but Gosling would be the perfect choice for people to finally take Arthur Curry seriously.

Seriously... Jensen Ackles, Garrett Hedlund and Ryan Gosling seem to be in the discussion everytime there is a casting to be made. Let's come up with some people more original.
TaoOfTheBatman - 8/9/2012, 1:10 PM
Le' Fluer for Aquaman!
Optimus83 - 8/9/2012, 1:10 PM
Kevin McKidd is the perfect choice in my opinion

Kevin McKidd as Arthur Curry/Aquaman
SAT - 8/9/2012, 1:10 PM
I like Sam Worthington, but he really needs to work on his accent.
Theunderdog - 8/9/2012, 1:12 PM
ksommer @ I agree with you. I hate seen the same actor cast over over over again. We need original casting
Spock - 8/9/2012, 1:12 PM
I remember Ryan in Remember the Titans:

Moakynubs - 8/9/2012, 1:14 PM
Chris Hemsworth!
Tainted87 - 8/9/2012, 1:14 PM
I'm going to make everyone confused, but here goes...

Jude Law.
Phileo26 - 8/9/2012, 1:15 PM
Honestly, i hope Supernatural ends soon so Jensen is able to do a CBM. I believe he is made for a good strong CBM role! He has proven that he can act, both as a serious don't f---k w/ me guy and also as a light-hearted caring guy. He has also exhibited the ability to convey intense emotions well on camera.

I feel Jensen MUST @ some point be a CBM hero!!
SunSp0t - 8/9/2012, 1:15 PM
K seriously why does everyone have Ryan Gosling cast as a superhero? Ive seen him fancasted as Nova, GL, DD and now Aquaman. Lol but anyways I agree with Sam Worthington being Aquaman, I think hed be great in the role. I was a fan of Aquaman before the new 52 reboot, Aquaman was just one of those characters that I immediately loved. I really hope this Justice League movie does happen.
SimyJo - 8/9/2012, 1:16 PM
HELL NO! to Sam Worthington.
The guy has been 'meh' and very overrated in every single Hollywood film to-date.
Tainted87 - 8/9/2012, 1:17 PM
Jensen Ackles would actually make a good Scott Lang.
JillValenfield - 8/9/2012, 1:18 PM
Oh my...there are very good choices (jensen Ackles, Sam worthington yumm :). But I don't know if any of these would fit as Aquaman (maybe a younger one :/)

At least someone who's not that bad as Justin Hartley in that horrible version of aquaman.
OnLeatherWings - 8/9/2012, 1:20 PM
I like sam worthington but agree he's a bit overrated he does have potential though. How bout Liam Hemsworth???? He def looks the part, maybe have some sibling rivalry to boost intrest????
Frogman - 8/9/2012, 1:20 PM
Kevin McKidd or Liam Hemsworth
SageMode - 8/9/2012, 1:21 PM
I think Kevin McKidd would own as Aquaman
LMFA0 - 8/9/2012, 1:24 PM
Armie hammer is the only person I could see as aquaman. He's got the build, the height, and the presence of someone people could believe as the king of Atlantis. I dare anyone to argue this
JeffG - 8/9/2012, 1:24 PM
I think Aquaman is lame. What's he gonna do, sic a killer whale on Darkseid?
CherryBomb - 8/9/2012, 1:24 PM
I say Josh Pence (AKA young Ra's in TDKR)

Tainted87 - 8/9/2012, 1:25 PM
Skarsgård isn't fit for Aquaman. He's just too quiet.
caveman - 8/9/2012, 1:28 PM
Worthington doesn't have the presence for it. anyone can list a lot of his movies but none that he actually delivered a memorable performance in. I uwant an Aquaman that'll leave me wanting a solo film. Come on, did anyone REALLY want Wrath Of The Titans?
MrBlueSky - 8/9/2012, 1:28 PM
How about none of the above? I'd go with Kevin McKidd:

BIGBMH - 8/9/2012, 1:33 PM
I like Josh Holloway, but I see him more as Green Arrow.
Bane2099 - 8/9/2012, 1:34 PM
Out of those choices... I'd have to go with Gosling, atleast u know he can act and is already in shape to play someone like Aquaman.
Bane2099 - 8/9/2012, 1:36 PM
BIGBMH

Holloway as Green Arrow would be awesome casting :D
Turtlestrong - 8/9/2012, 1:36 PM
Jensen Eckles was great in voicing Red Hood and frankly I think he would make a great live action Red Hood, or at least character of similar stature in a comic book movie.

Anyway, seeing as I like his acting, I thought he would make a good choice out of the five offered as Aquaman.
Rothwilder - 8/9/2012, 1:39 PM
How about no big name actors? Their other roles take away from someone being great as an unknown.
SimyJo - 8/9/2012, 1:43 PM
He is KING OF ATLANTIS!...

None of these actors are really oozing that mature kingly-aura for me, with possibly the slight exception of Josh Holloway. The rest look like they'd be cast as immature Princes of Atlantis.
AgentDelta - 8/9/2012, 1:44 PM
TayDee - 8/9/2012, 1:45 PM
Yeah who thinks there will be an aquaman movie any time soon
n1ghtw1ng2832 - 8/9/2012, 1:46 PM
[frick] RYAN GOSLING. THEY SHOULD GO WITH ALEX PETTYFER.
Yasn7 - 8/9/2012, 1:47 PM
[frick] sam worthington. Shit actor and never loses his aussie accent in any role.
I think they should have Ryan Gosling. His name would help the movie alot and hes a great actor.
MrCameron - 8/9/2012, 1:48 PM
Let's see:

5. Maybe. He's a little on the short side, but then again, that's nothing lifts can't fix.

4. Again, possibly.

3. WRONG. Much better suited for Guy Gardner.

2. Too young.

1. Doesn't have the right prescence IMO.

Out of all of theese, I'd be most inclined to go with Worthington (though my personal choice would be Karl Urban).
siggisuperman - 8/9/2012, 1:51 PM
Ryan Gosling for Danny Rand/ Iron Fist.
CherryBomb - 8/9/2012, 1:52 PM

@cipher Thanks! :D
dnno1 - 8/9/2012, 1:53 PM
A lot of good choices some of you are suggesting.
nailbiter111 - 8/9/2012, 1:54 PM
no skarsgard? booo
ralfinader - 8/9/2012, 1:57 PM
BattlinMurdock - 8/9/2012, 1:12 PM
Gosling doesn't have the presence for the king of the sea. These choices are all too young.

Agreed 100%. Gosling does not seem like he would fit in any action based role period. Would also think someone physically intimidating would be better to make Aquaman not seem like such the joke he is, like Adam Baldwin or something like that. But as for the choices above? No thanks, all those choices are pretty boys and would only hurt the charactor (unless the target audience is 10-16 year old girls, or gay guys in their forties).
Saintsinnister - 8/9/2012, 1:58 PM
VINCENT CHASE!!! DUH
Maxi91291 - 8/9/2012, 1:58 PM
Isnt Josh Holloway the face of Tony Stark in INVINCIBLE IRON MAN ???
