COMICS: Rick Remender Talks UNCANNY AVENGERS; Confirms Apocalypse And Kang As Villains

The Red Skull won't be the only villain making his return to the Marvel Universe this October as Rick Remender confirms plans to use both Kang and Apocalypse in Uncanny Avengers, as he and Tom Brevoort talk in great detail about the series.

"The origins of the team are unlike most of these groups where someone is picking these people, it's more of a chaos factor," said Rick Remender of this October's Uncanny Avengers. The series will see Captain America and Thor teaming up with Wolverine, Havok, Rogue and Scarlet Witch in a team which unites Avengers and X-Men alike. "Wolverine, I'd been in for a while. The events of 'AvX' and the end of the current arc of 'Uncanny X-Force' do things to Wolverine -- there's going to be some character development and change based on what he's endured and been through. Wanda's on the redemption arc. Scott's going through some wacky business and this speaks to Alex and why he's on the team. Rogue is not dealing with certain events very well -- she's almost more of a Wolverine than Wolverine."

The last decade or so has seen the X-Men kept very much apart from the Avengers, especially in recent years as Cyclops moved the team to Utopia on the coast of San Francisco. Tom Brevoort had this to say about finally bringing the two sets of heroes together in the post Avengers Vs. X-Men Marvel Universe. "In the post-'AvX' world, the X-Men...had kind of been ghettoized in the best way possible. They stuck to their own corner of the Marvel Universe and stuck to their own stuff. That artificial boundary is really just going away. That's not going to be there anymore after 'AvX' is done. It's a new kind of Avengers group for the Marvel Universe and it's expanding the boundaries of what we do. The particular goal and mission of Uncanny Avengers is on top of being a typical Avengers team. They're there to promote the cause by example that mutants are not people to be feared. They're just like you and me."

As for how Professor X (Charles Xavier) feels about all of this, Brevoort added, "I think it's fair to say that Xavier is fairly important to Uncanny Avengers. With all the AvX stuff that's bubbling up, I don't think we want to go much deeper than that. Yeah, he's pretty critical. You'll definitely see him in the book." Of course, it's also fair to assume that Magneto will have some fairly strong opinions about this new team, although that all depends on whether or not he survives Avengers Vs. X-Men. "To some degree, it all depends on 'AvX.' I would say given the relationships of the characters, given the worldview of the team and what they're trying to accomplish, it seems like it's inevitable if he's alive and ambulatory that he'll be around at some point."

"Some of the plans we have for the Red Skull are going to be Earth-shattering," Remender said of his plans for the villain in the series. "You're not going to see his ultimate goal for a year, but when you get there, I think it's going to be exciting to see the classic Marvel. We're trying to find ways that Avengers villain A and X-Men villain B can lead to stories that we've never seen before,. It's all very natural and the story dictates the choices. By issue #7, you'll have a really good idea of the three big players on the board. I have no question that what we've put together will make people very excited." He currently has Uncanny Avengers mapped out right up until issue #20 and it will all culminate with another two major villains Remender will be bringing to the forefront in the Marvel NOW! flagship series. Kang the Conqueror and Apocalypse! The appearance of the latter will apparently spin out of the events of Uncanny X-Force, forming a, "grand huge story that I'm wildly excited about."

kang has to be the most underrated marvel villian of all time
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 8/31/2012, 1:46 PM
Marvel NOW!, huh? Hmm. Not too sure about this. I'm pretty much on the fence about it. I know it's not a reboot per se, but maybe like a "fresh, wake up" take on the Marvel Universe. I don't know. I maybe wrong (correct me if I am).
Asterisk - 8/31/2012, 1:46 PM
Kang and Apocalypse are two mother[frick]ers you don't wanna mess with.

TheAmazingSpidey63 - 8/31/2012, 1:49 PM
@polarkyle - How so, dude?

IMO, Kang is one of the bad@$$ villians up there with other bad@$$ villians. :)
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 8/31/2012, 1:50 PM
@Asterisk - Indeed, dude. Going up against them is a death wish, really. LoL, cool. Same pics. :P
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 8/31/2012, 1:52 PM
Just to add here, what's with the two designs for Captain America?

I know that the spandex/chain-mail/pirate boots are a bit dated, but they don't need to go all the way with the milistaric look for Cap (on the right). Oh, well. :/
daveB - 8/31/2012, 1:53 PM
So in the new universe normal folk are just cannon fodder? Super Heroes should be rare, not every third person in the universe IMHO
Bark4Soul - 8/31/2012, 1:54 PM
Soooooooooo then all this young Apocalypse stuff in Uncanny X-Force is a waste of time then? We know he's going to be Apoc?
Rhinoman - 8/31/2012, 1:56 PM
Love Kang, I assume he we will see him in the MCU sooner rather than later. Although there has not been much of an interaction between the parties in the comics, I truly believe that if there is a Guardians of The Galaxy sequel(IE: The first does not bomb), that we will see Kang The Conquerer as the villian
marvel72 - 8/31/2012, 2:25 PM
kang & apocalypse are definetly two of the greatest marvel villains ever,up there with dr.doom, thanos, magneto & green goblin.
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 8/31/2012, 2:34 PM
@earzmundo - Gothca, dude. Thanks for the clarification. Been out of the loop with comics for a while and I come by and I read about this Marvel NOW! event and I was just confused about it. Again, thanks.
ATrueHero1987 - 8/31/2012, 2:35 PM
The more I hear about this book, the more interested I get. Kang & Apocalypse are great villains. I would love to see a faithful adaptation of Apocalypse one day on the big screen.
ATrueHero1987 - 8/31/2012, 2:36 PM
Oh and Marvel? I'm ready for the Age Of Ultron :)
95 - 8/31/2012, 2:40 PM
Good. My two favorite villains. Definitely buying this.
OrganizedChaos - 8/31/2012, 3:05 PM
@TheAmazingSpidey63 well the reason a lot of characters are getting new costumes is to clean up the look, so your right in a sense that some heroes looks are outdated. I actually like Cap's soldier look, but his shoulder pads bug me......
Bodwulf - 8/31/2012, 3:11 PM
Speaking of Kang
ckal - 8/31/2012, 3:25 PM
Bring Steve back to the Secret Avengers uniform.
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 8/31/2012, 3:59 PM
@OrganizedChaos - Ah, okay, then. Thanks for the clarification there, dude. And between the two designs for Cap...

I go with the one on the left. While it's still reminescent to Cap's classic suit, it has that modern look to it, IMO. Although, I'm not liking the knee-pads with the suit, and I'm a bit iffy with his helmet, it looks okay. Thanks again, dude. :)

You know, I'm a harcore X-Men fan, but I've been reading the Avengers since '91, never once have I ever read anything with Krang.
ThePowerCosmic - 8/31/2012, 4:45 PM
Kang Needs to be in an Avengers Movie at Some Point and Apocalypse needs to be in a good X-Men film not made by Fox. I would like this to happen:

Avengers: Loki
Avengers 2: Thanos
Avengers 3: Ultron
Avengers 4: Kang

Marvel's Uncanny X-Men: Magneto
Uncnany X-Men 2: Mr. Sinister
Uncnany X-Men 3: Apocalypse

And

Marvel's Fantastic Four: Dr. Doom
Fantastic Four 2: Annihilus
Fantastic Four 3: Galactus/ Silver Surfer
Fantastic Four 4: Skrulls

ThePowerCosmic - 8/31/2012, 4:47 PM
@ TheGambitFreak

NO, KANG! Krang is From Ninja Turtles!

Kang fought the Avengers first in issue 6.
ThePowerCosmic - 8/31/2012, 4:49 PM
I mean Issue 8
ATrueHero1987 - 8/31/2012, 5:26 PM
@TheGambitFreak I know Kang was in The Avengers book back in '03 or '04(a few issues before Bendis took over). He was also featured in The Avengers 2010 relaunch #1-#6.
jimpinto24 - 8/31/2012, 5:37 PM
Looking forward to Uncanny Avengers. Rick Remender has some cool stoylines lined up this Oct.
UniBeam11 - 8/31/2012, 5:48 PM
@Amazing
Kang doesnt get a lot of face time which is a shame but those pics you posted are all from the young avengers series (a very underrated series if you ask me)

@Gambit
If youve been reading the avengers since 91 then youve missed quite a bit from the young avengers story arcs. Kang was saturating the pages of the young avengers in the first story. It was great imo and id recommend picking it up (if youre not a homophobe that is lol gotta admit it took me a little while to get used to) but Kang was awesome in those and was essential in ironlads backstory.
NotU - 8/31/2012, 6:37 PM
so marvel's plan is to do so many x-overs that every character is in every group, thus circumnavigating potential movie right with holdings?- Zoidberg
ATrueHero1987 - 8/31/2012, 7:00 PM
The only think I don't like about Marvel NOW is that some characters are getting unnecessary costume changes, and they are cancelling Uncanny X-Men(which might come back next year).
beane2099 - 8/31/2012, 10:09 PM
I always felt that Apocalypse was a villain more worthy of the Marvel universe as a whole. Glad to see he'll finally be used in a broader capacity. My question is how many issues will Cassaday actually draw before he's replaced?
IronManny819 - 8/31/2012, 10:38 PM
I'd watch a gay porn if the script was written by Remender.
polarkyle - 9/1/2012, 5:08 AM
@TheAmazingSpidey63 he's a badass villain with technology that is so advanced and yet we don't see him much in the TV shows and he's not as well known as dr.doom or magneto. In fact i was hoping that he was gonna be the villain in the avengers 2.
ScionStorm - 9/1/2012, 8:33 PM

Kang! You get a pretty good idea of him in the Avengers EMH cartoon. He is awesome. Sure there have been characters that have been both Supervillain and Super Hero.

Not many who can claim that they have been/will be a teenage super hero, a super villain, a Pharoah, an immortal Agent of the Time-Keepers, a Pope in Earth X,a member of a Council comprised of Himselves, and related to Mr. Fantastic!
Bane2099 - 9/1/2012, 10:28 PM
I'm watching the movie Serenity at the moment, which we all know is done by Joss Whedon and I noticed something...Who else on here who has seen this movie would think that Chiwetel Ejiofor {The Operative} would make an awesome live-action version of Kang the Conqueror ???
