Opeña's artwork is grade A stuff. His style reminds me a bit of Leinil Francis Yu's.

SupermansBeard - 9/7/2012, 10:33 AM
I only can afford a monthly payment of two comics as I don't want too much spent on comics because it's easy to get out of hand. I'm sticking with Batman, dropping Red Hood, and going for All New X-Men. But I totally will be getting this in a trade
OdinsBeard - 9/7/2012, 10:39 AM
wow.. publish a variant issue with no inks...

polarkyle - 9/7/2012, 11:37 AM
looks great but where's the hulk
Ha1frican - 9/7/2012, 11:37 AM
@StevRogersSon Let me say this, you are entitled to your opinion on Caps suit, and this is in no way meant to be a flame comment but i really dont understand how anyone can like the OG Cap suit. The scales the wings, boots/gloves, all of it has always looked terrible to me and was a big factor of me never wanting to learn aboutthe character pre-mcu oneof the worst costumes in history IMO. What is it that makes it work for you?
Ha1frican - 9/7/2012, 11:46 AM
@MonkeyBalls3 i never liked Caps suit until the utlimates versions with the WW2 one and then the overall design of the modern one. I think the Avengers one with a Cloth cow would be my ideal one. But i was curious s to what makes people like the Original.
Ha1frican - 9/7/2012, 11:48 AM
But regardless of design this art is [frick]in awesome THIS is how comics should look
Dustellar - 9/7/2012, 11:48 AM
Looks like the movie ¬¬
Lightsplasher - 9/7/2012, 11:53 AM
Awesome ! But will Captain's costume change ?
ATrueHero1987 - 9/7/2012, 11:53 AM
I like the wings on caps mask! I'm confused because in some previews he has the wings(ex, Captain America #1) and others he doesn't.
SteveRogersSon - 9/7/2012, 12:05 PM
@ Ha1frican...To say that Cap's uniform is one of the worst in comic history just haven't looked at alot of classic suits in the Comic book Genre.

Cap's uniform is one of the better designed "iconic" character aspects. The proportions in color usage and lines flesh out an amazing image. His cowl with the exposed ears and wings create an amazing silhouette equalizes the eye/mouth openings and keeps the "A" from getting lost in all that blue...that's why in the 70s/80s the artists used black on his forehead to pull the A out.

Now as for the Chainmail..yes it's not scalemail...is a period aspect of Cap..remember he is a man out of time and while he has his shield, he needed some protection over the chest...and again it's drawn to define style and shape for cutting out the mass of blue.

The flared gloves and patriot boots...they're a sign of the design times..he's a "Patriot" for America...take or leave it...you can see from the drawing that they've cut those back....course the bulk up the gloves with useless pockets and padding...makes it a little harder to let that shield slide on and off.

And Cap's uniform has been getting little tweeks for the past two decades...with the inclusion of the visual seam now from his cowl to his shirt, and including a utility belt now..

TO me, He's always been my favorite character...the classic uniform always struck me as that visual icon that, to me, equals Superman's classic suit.

The introduction of a cowl helmet and extra bulk padding just gives the illusion of vulnerability that he hasn't had displayed before...I mean kneepads...come on really? With the lines of "realism" and "grittines"....ugh.
KrazyForKomix - 9/7/2012, 12:08 PM
Look . . . either go all the way and just bend over and let the movies design our comic characters – OR – let the comic book universes exist independent from their celluloid counterparts.
As it stands now, Marvels Ultimate universe should be the dumping ground for all thing movie inspired. THAT's the universe Samuel Jackson can have and rule in. THAT's the universe (yes I know it's from the other company) that Superman and WonderWoman can get it on in.
Give me my Kirby designed -PERFECT–uniforms any day. And cut it out with the overly realistic Hawkeye garb and bow!
Ahhhh, to hell with it . . .
Ha1frican - 9/7/2012, 12:13 PM
@SteveRogersSon as far as classic costume you are defintely right *cough gree lantern cough* i disagree with the expoed ears, not AS much for comics but for live action (see the Avengers art book) it makes him look like a chimp. The kneepads did look stupid. I like the cloth cowl ears kept in i loved that design for Dakken (i think thats how a live action Wolverine suit should look) and think it looks good on cap. I may feel differently but i appreciateyour willingness to explain yur side :)
SteveRogersSon - 9/7/2012, 12:13 PM
@Krazy..you mean the days of Punching Glove arrows is beyond us? Wait what about handcuff arrows..are they still ok?

Kirby...the genius that many current artists call their inspiration when they develop their new designs...

Stig, while things evolve, there is always that foundation that sticks...some of these designs honor that..while others don't..It's clearly the sign of the times when taking a clearly pro American hero and nullifying his core to a more, dare I say, "PC" aspect...well take it for what it is..yep, I'm a traditionalist...sue me.
marvel72 - 9/7/2012, 12:14 PM
@ Stigmartyr

thanks mate, that is one nice cover.
Ha1frican - 9/7/2012, 12:16 PM
@SteveRogersSon I do think the padding on TFA suit was excessive, i liked the design itself but should have been more figure hugging on the torso ,but on the other hand i thought the Avengers suit made hislegs look a little skinny at times. I say more padding on the lower half but the torso should be pretty figure hugging.
Ha1frican - 9/7/2012, 12:18 PM
@SRS i can totally understand be a traditionalist especially for a xharacter you have gravitated towards for a while. While i am one of the fewthat likes the new 52 Supes suit (my favorite hero) my favorite will always be the original strongman-esque suit so i see where u are coming from
Keldor - 9/7/2012, 12:19 PM
Good to see an artist using anctual pencils to sketch and actual pens to ink.
SteveRogersSon - 9/7/2012, 12:19 PM
@Ha1frican,
I have no problem talking about this character. As I said, he's one of the most beloved ones in my life.

We could go back and forth on the aspect of ears...I mean you can point to any number of heroes in both universes and say..with all those explosions and fights..shouldn't "insert hero name here" be deaf? or if your fist to cuffs..why not grab that guys ears....same could be said about heroes with capes...but that's the magic and beauty of the comicbook world.

With the movies, you are tied to "real world" avenues...I liked Cap TFA suit alot...and it absolutely worked...but it should be the Comics that inspire the movies..not vice versa.

Ha1frican - 9/7/2012, 12:24 PM
@SteveRogersSon yeah no i get the ears go eithr way and i hope i wasnt eeming like i as aying you were wrng this stuff is totally subjective. I do disagree with the films influencing the comics in terms of design though. Mean i cant stand it when they shameless adopt the costumes to clearly cash in on movie success but i think there is a give and take between the two mediums that lets the suits evolve in interesting ways
SteveRogersSon - 9/7/2012, 12:27 PM
@Ha1frican,

it's a balance that alot of artists, in my opinion, fail to establish with some of their designs..

For me, I am a fan of Cap how to of my favorite artist draw him. Mike Zeck really captured Cap...

His storytelling and style is still beyond compare for me.

I also really like Ron Garney

SteveRogersSon - 9/7/2012, 12:28 PM
Now If you go back to past articles on this site when Cap TFA was in production and everyone was up in arms about his uniform design...Then they saw it on screen and loved it....it's all about the medium.

Let's face it..there is no real life person that can carry a superhero's physical dimensions; none.
SteveRogersSon - 9/7/2012, 12:34 PM
who knows...after the Marvel Now stories are out there and Marvel actually provides a singular design for him and other characters...I may grow to like it..who knows..but for Marvel readers...They slide back and forth like waves on the beach. We may get his classic suit, and others, returned months/years later...

IF it's described well in the story that it makes sense, and not a cash grabbing venture...that will make it an easier pill to swallow.

But can anyone really say that the Joe Quesada Marvel Now promo of Cap all Padded up really looked good? I mean it will take him 30 mins just to get "suited up" and he'll need to buy big/tall clothes to wear that suit under them. and there's no folding that helmet and putting it in your pocket.

There's just so many things that I could point at...

Then there are designs that kinda ring of an evolution...Take Thor's redesign..really makes him a little more mean and barbarian like..that helmet...and swords???

And Iron man's new color scheme...why are so many up in arms about this..yet they love the silver centurion color scheme...or when Tony had suits designed off the current toy company releases....I mean deep sea suit Iron Man?
