Peter Jackson returns to Middle-Earth in December, this time adapting J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Hobbit. Originally set to be split into just two films, it was revealed earlier this month that there will now be THREE instalments. Seems like an awful lot for a reasonably short book, but the director reportedly had enough footage in order to stretch it out a little further and it’s thought that he may even delve into some of Tolkein’s other books in order to bridge the gap between these films and Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Below are a first look at the Warg's which will be featured in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, uploaded for us by Twitter's @JonasRJakobsen.

Taken from the Old English warg, the wargs or wild wolves are a race of fictional wolf creatures in J. R. R. Tolkien's books about Middle-earth. They are usually in league with the goblins or Orcs whom they permitted to ride on their backs into battle. It is probable that they are descended from Draugluin's werewolves, or of the wolf-hounds of the line of Carcharoth of the First Age. They are portrayed as somewhat intelligent, with a language of sorts, and are consciously in league with the Orcs, rather than wild animals the Orcs have tamed. In The Hobbit, the Wargs appear twice, once by working with goblins, in hunting Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, and the dwarves just east of the Misty Mountains, and once at the Battle of Five Armies. [Wikipedia]

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

D@mn, them [frick]ers are scary. Thank God those aren't real, LoL. Are these Wargs the same Wargs from LotR: TT and LotR: RotK? Still, pretty sweet. :)

TheAmazingSpidey63 - 9/11/2012, 4:44 PM
That first pic looks like a mix between a boxer and a panther, and the second pic reminds of Gmork from The Never Ending Story.

Scary [frick]er, he is. :s

I was wondering what are how they were going to handle this. The wargs were clearly described as giant or large wolves in the hobbit. But they clearly looked like hyena's in the Lord of the rings movies.

I'm sure there will be some quick offhand explanation for the differences? I guess we'll have to wait and see.
TheJoker1986 - 9/11/2012, 6:09 PM
These wargs look more badass than the other ones from LOTR.
Feedthemachine - 9/11/2012, 6:38 PM
PERFECT. So much better than the ones in the LOTR trilogy.
Pooh - 9/11/2012, 6:53 PM
That's scary. I think it's scary because the wargs look kind of human, and intelligent.

This is a wolf:

OK, so who's Jonas Jakobsen? How do we know this is legitimate? What has he proven to make himself a reliable source of news? The opening paragraph needs a WHOLE lot more research applied to it.

I switch off once I hear anyone saying the Hobbit isn't enough for three movies because its a small book. Any idiot stating that simply hasn't read the book or read it properly to understand its told from one persons perspective. To do a film in the manner of the others you'd need a lot more than one persons perspective, it needs to be dramatised. Add to that the many reference material concerning the Necromancer, the White council and the origins of the Quest for Erebor concerning Thorins lineage and you have more than enough material especially with all those battles.
Charlie2094 - 9/12/2012, 6:19 AM
@ Ceejay

I agree, it annoys me too. Plus, considering how the Hobbit is written (i.e. far less detail and far quicker pace than the likes of the Lord of the Rings), almost every chapter in the 'small' book is generally in a new location, with more action, new characters etc, many who don't get that fleshed out, including the dwarfs not getting much characterisation either. That + The Appendices, the likes of Radagast, and the inability to adapt the Silmarillion, there's no reason at all the Hobbit can't be 3 films.
fettastic - 9/12/2012, 6:23 AM
Not that I'm complaining, but is there a reason they look totally different from the Wargs in TTT?
Brady1138 - 9/12/2012, 6:27 AM
@fettastic The films establish that there are different species of of trolls, orcs (orcs, goblins, Uruk-Ai), and dragons, so I guess there are different kinds of wargs, just like there are different kinds of dogs and wolves.

high pitched voice: CREEPY AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Scarilian - 9/13/2012, 2:56 PM
monkeyballs3 - Lets be honest that is exactly what it is going to be. Stretched plot with all the battle scene's pushed to the final film in the series.

Did you hear they planned it as one film? split it to two because they stated they wanted to give the final battle justice and then stated it would need no more than two films... now we have three films with talks of a spin-off to bridge the gap between Hobbit and The Lord of the rings even more closely
