It looks like the fifth instalment in the Resident Evil franchise will take the overall gross of the series to $1 billion after a good, but not great, opening in North America this weekend. Finding Nemo has been re-released in 3D this week and looks set to take the #2 spot.

Deadline reports that Resident Evil: Retribution 3D has taken the #1 spot this weekend in North America after earning $8.8 million on Friday ($665,000 of which was from midnight screenings) and an estimated $23 million in total. This is less than the fourth instalment in the franchise, although a Sony exec tells the site that, "From early returns from international including Japan, this could be the biggest one yet." While critics have never been particularly kind to the series, they have so far grossed over $675 million and Resident Evil: Retribution may see the franchise pass a total $1 billion worldwide. Meanwhile, the 3D release of Disney/Pixar animated movie Finding Nemo grossed $5 million on Friday and looks set to take $18.3 million for the weekend.

I thought Finding Nemo 3D would be #1 even though it's a re-release.

@Tainted @Thanos I co-sign that. Like....these RE movies are garbadge, with an awful story, bad acting, and even horrible cgi. The fact that people actually go and spend money on these movies, makes me want to give up on humanity...its like...I can't...

Hopefully, this movie never recoups its budget and they finally stop making these godforsaken films.

Apparently, the movie still has a "solid" fanbase. Imagine that the movie will actually earn enough to make not just one, but two more. Oh, the horror...

I'm confused. Does somebody force you to watch these movies?

No, right?

Then why you don't want them to make any more if there's people who enjoy them?

RE was a HOT MESS!!! I'm hoping for a reboot! I can careless about how much the movie makes at the box office. Paul will never stay true to the video game, and the movies will continue to be terrible!

Looks like it'll be a quiet weekend for me. Not interested in the shitty RE film, or in the shitty post conversion of a decent film that I saw almost a decade ago.

I see these films because they are fun mindless action horror films with hot chicks, good special effects, and awesome monsters. Don't go in expecting it to be an oscar worthy movie and you'll have a good time

@Zoidberg

People who flock to see this trash influence the box office. If this grosses enough to give the whole series a billion, for example, it is showing that people love stupid movies.

Bottom line: more stupid movies will be made, and at an increased frequency.

I'll be honest, I like the Resident Evil movies because I'm a zombie nut, but Retribution was seriously painful to sit through...

@Tainted87

Just because YOU think its crap doesn't mean it is (BTW I saw only the first and it was awful)

If they make money, it's because a lot of people enjoy them.

There's people (like David Cronenberg) who think CBM's are crap. Should Marvel/WB stop doing them because they say so? Of course not.

Same here, then. Your personal tastes are not more important than anyone else's.

Who are the cultural sodomites that continue to pay honest money to watch this shit franchise over and over again?

RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 9/15/2012, 12:14 PM
@Zoidberg

BTW, Cronenberg never said CBM's are crap.

In fact, many of his earlier movies like Scanners, Videodrome and the Fly could just as easily be adapted from pulp comics. He even adapted a graphic novel in A History of Violence.

The point is that there crap zombie movies just like there are crap CBMs. The Resident Evil should die like the Fast and Furious franchise.

Saw the first three - horrible. Even without that knowledge, some things are kind of a given. How do you know jumping off a building is bad for your health unless you tried it?

Capcom, you know the company that made that game called Resident Evil that all you love so much, are the ones who didn't give you the movie you wanted. Not Paul & Milla, they're just doing something they love to do. All you RE movie haters would have gotten exactly what you wanted if Capcom would have allowed it. I find it funny that almost everyone who hates the movies are quick to blame the writer/producer/director/actors and seem to ignore the fact that it's not their fault you didn't get an exact replica of you favorite game on screen.
Tainted87
Tainted87 - 9/15/2012, 2:41 PM
First off, I hadn't played a single RE game before seeing the first three at a friend's house. My ex sort of half-way introduced me to the game series afterwards, which I promptly gave up on. I have no loyalty to the games.

Secondly, it's bad film-making, pure and simple. Sure it's Capcom's fault - they're a bunch of losers who are completely out of ideas, but how does that make it any better?

Thirdly, I'm happy for Paul and Milla, truly I am. Unfortunately, their functional marriage means looking at these godawful ads every other year in front of our YouTube videos and whatnot.

Dear God... they just greenlighted to more sequels to this.

I heard there is only supposed to be one more movie after this, but it being #1 at the box office could change that.

yo honestly these movies are poorly written and directed, but the story is fun. im a huge zombie fan. so ill watch most things with zombies. granted i dont like the fact that these zombies are crazy mutated now. and the tone is really campy and should be a bit scarier. but the films are still fun. the story is fun its a good ride. its nothing i can watch more than maybe twice. but its a fun franchise. i would love if paul ws anderson would just write a good script and maybe get deeper with the characters and not make it such a karate fest. he has to have multiple films of a shitty character for you to start to feel somethign for their inevitable death. thats bad writing. maybe if he asked for some help.
