New Details On Shailene Woodley's Role As 'Mary Jane' In AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Sequel

It appears as if The Descendants actress has finalised a deal to play 'Mary Jane Watson' in Marc Webb's sequel to The Amazing Spider, with one reliable source claiming that she will only have a very small part in the film before becoming an "integral lead" in the third instalment of the new franchise.

Earlier today, it was revealed that Shailene Woodley had signed up for the lead role in Lionsgate's adaptation of Veronica Roth's Divergent (a similar type of young adult novel to The Hunger Games apparently). That understandably led to speculation that she wouldn't have time to ply 'Mary Jane Watson' in The Amazing Spider-Man sequel. Well, not so, according to The Hollywood Reporter. According to the site, Woodley has already "booked the coveted role" which, "is proving to be only a very small part in Amazing Spider-Man 2 but blossoms into an integral lead for the planned third movie as the studio seeks to build to the classic "Death of Gwen Stacy" story. Perhaps we'll only see the actress for the iconic, "Face It Tiger. You Just Hit The Jackpot!" scene! What do you guys think about this? Be sure to sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

I don't like how Webb is making this trilogy into a teen drama....
soda9 - 10/18/2012, 5:34 PM
I think this is awesome news! Pumped!

Noooooooooooooooo

Mary Jane having a small role, but more prominent for the third film for the Death of Gwen Stacy story? Yesssssssssssssss

But Woodley playing MJ? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
sweetre15 - 10/18/2012, 5:38 PM
@Tony93: It's no more "teen drama" than any high school centric take on Spider-man I've seen so far.
marvel72 - 10/18/2012, 5:39 PM
not really good enough for mary jane, should of gone mary elizabeth winstead.

but i'm up for the death of gwen stacy storyline,i would also love to see the green goblin look more like this(see video)& less like a power ranger.

XxComablackxX1937 - 10/18/2012, 5:39 PM
I dunno how to feel about the sequel yet.
nailbiter111 - 10/18/2012, 5:40 PM
i can't tell you how much i hate this choice for mary jane. does Sony or Marc Webb ever read a Spidey comic book?
nailbiter111 - 10/18/2012, 5:41 PM
the creepy factor of a thirty year old garfield, with a 20 year old mary jane, who looks like she is fifteen is ...ew.
Spideyguy94 - 10/18/2012, 5:42 PM
Have never seen her in anything so can't really say if she's a good choice but it can't get any worse than Kirsten dunst (shivers)
JDUKE25 - 10/18/2012, 5:42 PM
@marvel72 dang straight. Goblin will hopefully be awesome looking. Hoping they don't go the ultimate route with his look.
AmericanPsychoWolf - 10/18/2012, 5:44 PM
So it'll probably be a cameo or a few scenes. Electro is probably the villain for 2 and Green Goblin is set for three.
LucasMend - 10/18/2012, 5:45 PM

oh btw: play* there
LucasMend - 10/18/2012, 5:45 PM
wtf she has to do with MJ? MJ is the model/hot type, not this skinny weird chick.
D117 - 10/18/2012, 5:46 PM
I changed my mind, I'm about done with this "new" franchise FAIL

Spideyguy94 - 10/18/2012, 5:47 PM
@JDUKE25 yeah as much as I love ultimate spider-man ultimate goblin is not the way to go he looks to close to the lizard only difference is he's got spikes and hasn't got a tail or scales
nowtheresaBATman - 10/18/2012, 5:49 PM
@nailbitter111 Creepy factor indeed!

I hope to god she doesn't get the part. FFS Sony MJ is suppose to be model hot!

If this is the best they can do I'd rather have Emma Stone die her hair back to red & just play MJ too!
AEStark - 10/18/2012, 5:49 PM
@the casting director....

YOU HAD ONE JOB!!

@LEVITIKUZ spot on man Evans as cap is another one and to a lesser extent ruffalo

If you listen closely, you can hear the sound of a million facepalms across the world in unison.
The14thAvenger - 10/18/2012, 5:52 PM
personally i think its a mistake having both female leads so prominent in one film together, i feel it would lessen the impact of gwens death if he just goes to MJ straight after, it should at least be in the sequel. hopefully this wont just be a trilogy im getting tired of those.
lapress - 10/18/2012, 5:54 PM
I think it would be less weird if the actress playing MJ would be around the same age
Durf - 10/18/2012, 5:55 PM
I kinda agree with @nail here. I will give it a chance, but I am seriously not digging this chick as MJ. She just doesn't seem to fit the part. But we will see I guess...
TheRock234 - 10/18/2012, 5:56 PM
Looks like they're gonna kill off Gwen Stacy in the second film after all this is a theory of course
Grayson7954 - 10/18/2012, 5:56 PM
seriously guys you never know who actually has the acting chops, or physical changes someone will go through portraying someone on film, i had my doubts about hardy and hathaway, evans as cap, ruffalo as hulk, and they blow you away with unexpectedness. Ive heard she was real good in the descendants, who cares if she isnt model hot like mary in the comic books, shes cute, with the hair red, she'll look good. and as long as she has acting chops, which i bet she does, she'll do fine.
soberchimera - 10/18/2012, 5:56 PM
Who's the villain gonna be?!?!?!?
Methinks
notmuchtotellreally - 10/18/2012, 5:57 PM
YES!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You guys should seriously stop judging! You're starting to sound like annoying facks!
theInvincibleMexiMan - 10/18/2012, 6:00 PM
oh man they're really going to adapt the death of Gwen Stacey? It seems like a waste of Emma Stone, they shoulda got this girl to play Gwen and have Stone play MJ if they were gonna kill off Stacey

JonathaNisMagnuM - 10/18/2012, 6:00 PM
**sigh** & as much as I hated the TASM pt 1, I had high hopes for redemption. Next thing you know Webb will make the suit w/ more blue than he had in his first version of the suit.. So sorry you're getting this treatment Spidey
Spidey Facepalm2

Spidey Facepalm

even Members of Avengers
Captain America Facepalm
Thor Facepalm

EVEN DC Characters...

Green Lantern Facepalm
mk - 10/18/2012, 6:01 PM
Nice actress.. really pretty but i don't really see the hot factor..
jimpinto24 - 10/18/2012, 6:01 PM
Shailene Woodley as MJ Waston would be horrible casting! Cast Mary Elizabeth Winstead as MJ.
ArmoredAsgardian - 10/18/2012, 6:06 PM
I thought The Amazing Spider-Man was pretty good, but TASM 2 needs to step up the "superhero" part of the movie and tone down the "tween drama" part. As for this chick as MJ, I would've picked someone closer to Garfields' who still looks like they could be a teenager.
LucasMend - 10/18/2012, 6:10 PM
Wrong? people can't judge stuff anymore? LOLOLOL
Temple - 10/18/2012, 6:11 PM
Mhm, not feeling it, but who knows? Probably she'll surprise us like anne hathaway in TDKR. Gotta wait and see.
nowtheresaBATman - 10/18/2012, 6:11 PM
I bet Emma Stone is happy w/ this casting. Now she doesn't have to get jealous about her real life boyfriend making out w/ a actress hotter than her lol
SwingsetKnight - 10/18/2012, 6:12 PM
...mm, okay, whatevs. She doesn't look at all like the comics version of Mary Jane, but I've never seen her acting. Hopefully that's what they picked her for.
TrueRedBlue - 10/18/2012, 6:13 PM
NOOOOOOO!! SOMEONE ELSE, PLEASSSEEEEE!!!
JatevinM - 10/18/2012, 6:14 PM
So people are complaining because a girl who looks like she could actually still be in high school was cast to play a high school MJ? People were wanting a model type girl to play MJ because what? They think thats how high school students actually look or because it has more to do with them wanting to have eye candy? This complaint is seriously stupid Shailene is a great actress and she still do the role justice. I wouldn't want some tall model type chick to be playing MJ as it wouldn't feel natural or organic it would feel forced and casted for a reason other than talent.
cfoster060809 - 10/18/2012, 6:14 PM
@Spideyguy94 she was in The Descendants with George Clooney. she is talented but i wouldn't say the best choice for MJ
TrueRedBlue - 10/18/2012, 6:16 PM
We all know what that 'small part' will be. Peter will open the front door to his apartment and she'll be there and say "Face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot."
sweetre15 - 10/18/2012, 6:17 PM
All I'll say is this outside of the fact that she'll probably have more in common with the Spectacular Spider-man MJ(Spunky party girl facade with looks similar to Ultimate MJ) than straight up 616 MJ, what she did in The Descendants was pull off being a party girl with spunk, attitude, and serious parental issues and threw in some vulnerability as well. While she wasn't MJ to a tee in that film, the foundations for a good MJ was DEFINITELY there. IMO
Temple - 10/18/2012, 6:18 PM
@marvel72 I still wonder why they didn't go with that goblin costume. It's so creepy, yet cool and it would have brought the goblin alive, instead of the cheap armor.
HULK2099 - 10/18/2012, 6:18 PM
Really........
DudeLove721 - 10/18/2012, 6:21 PM
If there's anything I've learnt from the first movie, it's not to expect anything "classic" from the comic books. In fact, they went out of their way to distance themselves from the classic interpretations of Spidey and are trying to reinterpret things that never needed to be instead.

Honestly, out of all the upcoming CBMs, I am looking forward to this sequel the least -- no small feat, considering Spidey is my favorite superhero. They lost the plot with what makes Spider-Man identifiable and, while it definitely had its faults, the original trilogy came a lot closer to capturing Peter Parker on the big screen. (Well except for emo Peter in Spidey 3 -- that was [frick]ing shit. lol)
RSDhillon - 10/18/2012, 6:22 PM
I think she'll be alright. Nailbiter has a point. That kinda age difference!!

I just hope they make Spidey SUPER SUPER sad. Not emo sad, but really grief-stricken after Gwen dies.
SanFranLand - 10/18/2012, 6:24 PM
Having Spidey done by Sony is kind of like McDonalds calling it a "burger." Sure there are similarities to things that you love but it comes off as cheap and leaves you feeling sick.
RSDhillon - 10/18/2012, 6:24 PM
Also, I haven't seen the movie yet. I know in Raimi's, Spidey was always getting his mask ripped. Kinda weirded me out.

Does that happen here?
Spideyguy94 - 10/18/2012, 6:27 PM
@TrueRedBlue if Gwen dies at the end of tasm 2 and that happens that will be a real dick move
