Josh Wilding Reviews: SILHOUETTES FROM POPULAR CULTURE BY OLLY MOSS

Olly Moss' first book is now on sale from Titan Books, and it features his own unique twist on the Victorian art of silhouette portraits. Oh, what's the twist you ask? Well, those included in the book are some of the most well-known characters from popular culture! Hit the jump for my verdict.

Available now from Titan Books, Silhouettes From Popular Culture By Olly Moss is something very special indeed. Chances are that you will already be familiar with Moss' work, regardless of whether you've seen it in Empire Magazine or his incredible Mondo posters for films such as The Avengers and Thor. Well, this is a great example of where he excels, as the critically acclaimed artist offers up his own unique spin on the Victorian art of silhouette portraits with the use of such iconic popular culture characters as Admiral Ackbar, Buzz Lightyear, Conan, Rorschach, Terminator, and far too many more to mention here. None of them are labelled (working out who is who makes it more fun after all!) and the varied and imaginitive selection on offer is truly superb.

Featuring a foreword from Moon and Source Code director Duncan Jones as well as an introduction from Olly Moss himself, that's about all you get in terms of dialogue, but the images are all so unique and visually stunning that you really won't care less. Another plus point of Silhouettes From Popular Culture By Olly Moss is how well presented it is. At around seven inches in size, the nicely put together hardcover also features high-quality interior pages, making the silhouettes look all the better and the generally just extremely easy to flick through. This is Moss's first book and one can only hope that we'll see more of his work combined all in one place in such a way. The collection is a must-have for any fan of his unique artistic style and art lovers in general. Fantastic.

For his eagerly awaited first book, acclaimed artist Olly Moss has had the simple but brilliant idea of putting his own twist on the Victorian art of silhouette portraits. While this lovingly crafted volume might look as if it’s from the 1890s, its pages contain today’s favourite cult characters from movies, TV, comics and videogames. Can you recognise them all?
