BOX OFFICE: DREDD 3D Ends Domestic Run With A Paltry $13.4 Million

After a disappointing $6.3 million opening at the North American box office back in September, DREDD 3D has finally ended it's theatrical run and the domestic total for the critically acclaimed reboot confirms that it had one of the worst wide releases of the year.

What a terrible shame. The superb DREDD 3D has finally concluded its run at the North American box office with a measly $13,414,714. According to Box Office Mojo, that means it had one of the worst wide releases of 2012. It failed to ever take off in the US, but had no problem taking the #1 spot in the UK. Internationally, the reboot made $10,100,000, giving DREDD a total of $23,514,714. With a budget of $45 million, you can now just about guarantee that a sequel will NEVER happen. You can read my 5* review by clicking HERE.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson, a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan's inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound's control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson
Lena Headey as Madeline Madrigal

This is so sad, I bet if he was Batman tons of people would've gone seen it. The General Audience needs to be more open-minded with CBM films, especially with the good ones.

I really thought this movie might be the sleeper hit of the year...boy was I wrong.
Asterisk - 11/2/2012, 2:46 PM
Damn. This movie truly was good.

1. The Dark Knight Rises
2. The Avengers
3. Dredd 3D
4. The Amazing Spider-Man

Just my opinion.
digg20 - 11/2/2012, 2:48 PM
who is to be held responsible for this tragedy? The studio that did not promote it enough? the close minded people who rather watch jennifer Laurence on a horror flick? The curse of the Silvester Stallone film? a sad indeed.
DrDoom - 11/2/2012, 2:48 PM
The fact that Amazing Spider-Man made $700 million and Dredd made chump change is the greatest tragedy of the year.
shiverman20 - 11/2/2012, 2:50 PM
As I watched it I was picturing the future of the franchise... Can't believe I probably won't be seeing a second move
CaptainObvious - 11/2/2012, 2:52 PM
Bye Dredd. See you again in 15 years.
NoAssemblyReqd - 11/2/2012, 2:54 PM
Marketing, marketing, marketing. Helped kill JOHN CARTER (a decent but decidedly not spectacular effort) too.
Tufasrox - 11/2/2012, 2:56 PM
That's Dredd-ful. Great movie. Hopefully DVD sales do it justice.
AlexDeLarge87 - 11/2/2012, 2:57 PM

Your numbers are wrong. Dredd made more than that internationally so far and has a worldwide gross of $36,097,247.

jazzman - 11/2/2012, 3:05 PM

RaMMaR - 11/2/2012, 3:08 PM
i thought Dredd was great! i really hope a second film is done... if there is any justice.
SageMode - 11/2/2012, 3:10 PM
If this movie was a PG-13 rating, it wouldve made more gross more than likely.

You VERY rarely hear of R-rated movies doing a killer at the box office.
toco89 - 11/2/2012, 3:11 PM
No justice in america, it needs Dredd.
vonstallin - 11/2/2012, 3:11 PM
this was pretty damn good movie...DVD sales might help it out, but sad that it will not get a part 2.

I think the low advertisement and stink from Stallones Dredd movie gave it a bad reboot.

SO many people talk shit and never saw the movie on my fb page. The movie was fantastic.....

I like stallones movie also lol.
Bane2099 - 11/2/2012, 3:15 PM
Thats a damn shame, i really enjoyed this movie and for sure will be buy it on DVD, great action and they didnt hold back on the violence, got the bad taste of Stallones version out of my memory while watching it...Would've hoped for a sequel though to see where this franchise could've gone.

That's a bit of a myth.

The Expendables 2, Looper, Argo, Paranormal Activity 4, Sinister, End of Watch, House at the End of The Street, The Possession are all R-rated films released in the last 2 months that have made twice their budget and are now in profit, and all released in the so called 'quiet' months.
Superior - 11/2/2012, 3:22 PM
@INSTANTJUSTICE

House at The End of the Street was rated PG-13.
ManofSteel22 - 11/2/2012, 3:23 PM

"This is so sad, I bet if he was Batman tons of people would've gone seen it."

I'm pretty sure you have your own preferred types of films. While Dredd is a comic book movie, it ain't the same type as Batman. Your comparing apples and oranges.

"The General Audience needs to be more open-minded with CBM films, especially with the good ones."

I liked this film but this movie clearly had a certain theme. It was a movie about a guy who dresses up in a costume and uses his powers to stop the forces of evil. This was a movie about a cop in a hellish future.

Also I sure as hell wouldn't take my kid to see Dredd. I wouldn't take the whole family. I wouldn't want my kid to mimic the guy.

Had Dredd actually been a film similar to Batman then you would have a point. But just being based off a comic is not enough to make your statement.
HavocPrime - 11/2/2012, 3:37 PM
[frick], that sucks to hear I loved Dredd.
DEATHbyEXILE - 11/2/2012, 3:40 PM

ABLEE337 - 11/2/2012, 3:40 PM
Dredd was my favorite comic book movie of the year. Can't wait to buy it on Blu Ray.
imnotwearinghockeypants - 11/2/2012, 3:40 PM
Meanwhile, garbage Transformers movies haul in record profits. Never underestimate the stupidity of the common movie goer.
starkillerkch - 11/2/2012, 3:46 PM
we can only hope it makes alot of money on Dvd and Blurays so we can get another film
BlueDemon - 11/2/2012, 3:49 PM
THIS MOVIE WAS [frick]ING AWESOME!!!!
BlueDemon - 11/2/2012, 3:50 PM
It was better than TDKR
DoomXfactor - 11/2/2012, 3:52 PM
Incendiary!!!
DoomXfactor - 11/2/2012, 3:54 PM

jimoakley666 - 11/2/2012, 3:56 PM
Oh, well. [frick] the yank audiences. I enjoyed the hell out of the film and will continue to do so on dvd.
nikgrid - 11/2/2012, 3:59 PM
Dredd was awesome! I preferred it over the Avengers. Just make sure you guys buy it on Blu Ray, because if it has great Home sales there will be a sequel.
FOOM - 11/2/2012, 4:00 PM
BlueDemon,

Nail on the head there. It was infinitely better than TDKR. No justice for Dredd.
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 11/2/2012, 4:09 PM
Well, that's their marketing team's fault. They got what they deserved... Fire your advertising unit.
