COMICS: The Caped Crusader Battles The Joker In First Look At Inked Pencils From BATMAN #17

Batman #16 was a real, ahem, "shocker" and in this first look at Greg Capullo's pencils from issue #17, we see the Caped Crusader battling out with the Clown Prince of Crime in the final chapter of Scott Snyder's "Death of the Family".

The latest issue of Batman was perhaps Scott Snyder's most horrific yet as the Caped Crusader tracked the villain down to Arkham Asylum and was confronted by some hideous sights. Talking to Comic Book Resources earlier today, the writer had this to say about the next instalment in the series: "I was actually joking on the phone with Dan Slott after "Spider-Man" #700. I was telling him how I felt so bad because it sounded like things got crazy for him, and he said, "Wait until you get to 'Batman' #17! You'll have the same." So honestly, maybe I will go be in a bunker somewhere the day that issue comes out. But I believe in the ending very strongly. I believe in the story beat we're headed towards." So, it sounds as if we should expect one of the family not to make it out alive! Below is a first look at Greg Capullo's pencils from issue #17.

• This is it: The stunning conclusion to "DEATH OF THE FAMILY"!
• Who lives? Who dies? Who laughs last? Find out as Batman and The Joker face off one last time!

Best comic book series on the stands right now.

I reloaded this page 4 times thinking the page failed to properly. Those are ink finishes.

I'm a huge fan of his pencil work, so a tad disappointed... sorry to nitpick, but.... yeah.

These are Capullo pencils:

i'm pretty sure it's gonna be a head on that platter. and i think we all know whose.
Jolt17 - 1/17/2013, 7:51 AM
Yeah, Capullo's pencil works are gold. I wonder how can he pull off such dynamic strokes...but anyway, that also happens with pretty much every other artists - Bryan Hitch being the most notable, IMO - where their pencil work looks better than the ink finishes. I think that's simply inevitable, but not that it makes the art far less amazing, though.

Anyway, this looks insane. In a great way, of course.
jimoakley666 - 1/17/2013, 8:02 AM
Gorgeous artwork there. That cover is a future classic.
DukeAcureds - 1/17/2013, 8:10 AM
So the whole comic is Joker Vs. Batman and something Spoilerific is going to happen? Really doesn't take a genius to figure out what. It even says in the tag-line: "Who lives? Who dies?" and it goes on to say that this will be the last fight between Batman and the Joker. If there has yet to be a death in this "Death of the Family" (Did Alfred die?) then either The Joker or Batman will die in this comic. And guess which one of them has already died recently and has his own franchise?
Supes17 - 1/17/2013, 8:17 AM
The Ledger Joker looks so [frick]ing demonic in that pic^
TheDARKestKNIGHT - 1/17/2013, 8:22 AM
Joker, Alfred (most likely), or Damian.
lapress - 1/17/2013, 8:26 AM
Maybe in Batman's last dying breath he'll tell Joker to become The new Batman.. a Superior one!
AC1 - 1/17/2013, 8:28 AM
The difference between Snyder and Slott though, is that Snyder is actually good at his job, whereas Slott's work is pretty cheap and tacky (he's pretty much turning Spider-Man into Batman, so I'm surprised no one at DC has called him out on that yet).

Anyway, it's always harder for me to get ahold of new comics, so I tend to wait for TPBs. Can't wait to get Court of Owls and this, it all looks fantastic.

@LEVITIKUZ I love that Nicholson/Ledger Jokers pic. It's really eerie and looks like some kind of [frick]ed up, deranged family photo. Plus, it shows how brilliant the quality of those figures are, since people mistook them for the actual actors (they're HotToy's, right?)
Jolt17 - 1/17/2013, 8:31 AM
lapress: LMAO.
AC1 - 1/17/2013, 8:32 AM
I think there'll be multiple casualties, not just main characters but some more minor ones too. I think the top candidates are Alfred, Damien, Joker, some of the named GCPD cops (Bullock, etc)... and some more unlikely, left-field candidates being Jim Gordon or Barbara Gordon. It'll be a shame to see any of them bite the dust, though.
Bandido - 1/17/2013, 8:44 AM
One of my favorite panels in 16 was just a close up to batman and he just says "come on then! COME ON!"
So [frick]ing badass
Wingding - 1/17/2013, 8:49 AM
@Bandido

One of mine was when Scarecrow is gassing Batman, and batman just shoves his fist in Scarecrow's mouth. LOL. And can't forget the panel where he punched a HORSE in the FACE. Batman is the epitome of bad@$$.
Sevairity - 1/17/2013, 9:02 AM
LMAO! @Lapress

Maybe in Batman's last dying breath he'll tell Joker to become The new Batman.. a Superior one!

[frick]ING GREAT
RadicalDuck - 1/17/2013, 9:05 AM
@lapress - I laughed and cried.
JDUKE25 - 1/17/2013, 9:14 AM
@lapress hilarious lmao
Sora - 1/17/2013, 9:16 AM
@lapress
Great idea
Also
Joker will experience batman's memories and dedicate himself to becoming
THE SUPERIOR BATMAN!
SentinelofLiberty - 1/17/2013, 9:16 AM
I keep thinking it's going to be Tim Drake. Nightwing is too popular and his book is doing fairly well. Jason is fairly popular since coming back in Red Hood persona. Damian is Bruce's son and that angle has been a pretty big deal in the Batbooks. Tim has been the most expendable one, for a while.

My money is still on Damian, but I wouldn't be surprised if Tim got it.

I will be PISSED if they kill Alfred.
DukeAcureds - 1/17/2013, 9:32 AM
I'm calling it. Batman kills The Joker. DC sells a more aggresive, slightly more psychotic Batman. Fans hate it. Then get used to it.
DukeAcureds - 1/17/2013, 9:38 AM
There're gonna be a shitload of debates to follow Batman's killing of the Joker about whether or not it is a valid interpretation. I can see it coming. There have been many interpretations of Batman as a killer; Tim Burton's, Frank Miller's, Chris Nolan's (albeit hypocritically) and they have all been valid and also quite excellent. But as a purist, I don't think the best version of Batman is the one where he kills. I think that it is a unique part of his psychological make-up.
But yeah, I think it's pretty obvious, from these pages and the tag-line that describes the issues that Batman will be killing the Joker.
JDUKE25 - 1/17/2013, 9:43 AM
I'm perfectly fine with Joker dying. Bring it.
RobLiefeldFan - 1/17/2013, 9:50 AM
@lapress Good one LMAO!
DukeAcureds - 1/17/2013, 10:09 AM
DatScarletPimp@ Alfred could be the one to step in and shoot Joker, Earth One style.
comicb00kguy - 1/17/2013, 10:12 AM
Joker dying? Yeah, right. He'll be back in no more than a year. Same thing if it was Bruce Wayne who "dies". Nothing permanent happens here.
HeadPool420 - 1/17/2013, 10:42 AM
If Batman kills the Joker I will be shocked! All these years and Batman never kills anyone, so it will take a lot to get him to kill. In the movies Batman kills and lets people die left and right but not in the comics! That was always one of Batmans main rules "no killing"!!!! That's what set him apart from all the other vigilantes!
Franshu - 1/17/2013, 10:46 AM
Whatever it is Snyder's got for Batman 17, it won't be as bad as ASM 700. The comic doesnt seem to be headed towards an utter insult of all Batman is... I'm guessing it'll be something more like it's Alfred/Gordon's head on the plate at the end of #16
samsupes - 1/17/2013, 10:54 AM
SPOILERS in case nobody has read the recent issues:

"I was actually joking on the phone with Dan Slott after "Spider-Man" #700. I was telling him how I felt so bad because it sounded like things got crazy for him, and he said, "Wait until you get to 'Batman' #17! You'll have the same."

Well that changes everything. A few things....

1) In the description for the March issues, they never mention Bruce Wayne, only Batman

2) When Joker brings out the silver platter, it is bloody....but not when he takes it out as he is about to take Batman off the electric chair

That fight occurs before the others are woken up. Joker kills Bruce Wayne. Dick retaliates by killing The Joker. Dick becomes the new Batman.....

....And then in a few months it will be revealed that every issue since #1 has been a twisted sick dream of The Jokers OR Ra's Al Ghul brings them both back from the dead to keep the status quo. Either way Jokers face is back to normal and Death of the Family was all a waste of time.
Tomontherun99 - 1/17/2013, 11:14 AM
@samsupes Wayne's on the cover of issue 19
superotherside - 1/17/2013, 11:28 AM
Looks great. Hope they kill Bat's son off.
theInvincibleMexiMan - 1/17/2013, 12:17 PM
Bat-axe in those pictures. Looks like the fights gonna be taken to the Batcave!
DukeAcureds - 1/17/2013, 12:39 PM
It would be really stupid if they killed Bruce Wayne, again, after he just came back. But if they do, maybe they should introduce John Blake? Dick's already had two shots at the gold.
Tomontherun@ And Bruce Wayne's holding a gun. Maybe they are gonna turn him into a killer.
They'll probably bring up the whole thing about the fact that Batman used to carry a gun, back in th eoriginal Bob Kane Batman, as an excuse, but everyone always tends to forget that the gun he had in the Bob Kane era was full of silver bullets for killing Vampires and Werewolves, during the original Monk storyline.
GetsugaTensho22 - 1/17/2013, 12:49 PM
I'm being serious.

Batman kills Joker, and with this act that goes against the very core of his being, he snaps. Joker, in his dying laugh, tells him "the show's gotta go on , batsie!". Batman becomes the new joker..faster, stronger, tougher and crazier....the Superior Joker!
maxxgone - 1/17/2013, 12:56 PM
sorry dan slott: your hide out bunker only seats one, as scott snyder is a GOOD writer and will not have to fear the backlash of being a shock and awe hack.

nice try though.

snyder knows what he's doing. we know he knows what he's doing. he doesn't have to sift through back issues to find a way out of a shitty little arc he thinks is daring and risky.
DukeAcureds - 1/17/2013, 1:05 PM
The Joker will have the last laugh. He'll die, but he'll die laughing because he made Batman break his one rule.
scapegoatjones - 1/17/2013, 1:55 PM
killing the Joker is so easy to remedy given that his alias is and could always be up in the air.

could totally see Bats offing Joker only to hear Mr. J say "Sorry Batsy, but your Joker is in another castle."

I'd prefer closing the chapter on Damian personally.
wearethewalkingdead9 - 1/17/2013, 4:00 PM
I seriously wish they'd end the arc with Batman finally [frick]ing ending the Joker. I am so done and tired with the Joker's shit. How many people is going to kill before someone puts a bullet between his eyes? Red Hood has had multiple opportunities to do so and has just walked away. END THE REIGN OF JOKER AND FOCUS ON OTHER CHARACTERS. make them just as good, if not better than the joker.
Nivekian - 1/17/2013, 7:55 PM
It's gonna be Alfred.
pepe - 1/17/2013, 11:58 PM
If they kill da Joker they´ll only bring him back in a bad way. Hope anoying Damien dies... Realy.
KeefNCookies - 1/18/2013, 9:35 AM
I cant imagine them killing off anyone other than Alfred. Gordon would be pretty heavy too, and while I did enjoy Tim Drake before The New52, I couldnt care less about him now. I really dont care for the New52 as a whole so I dont really care who it is or what happens. It would be sad to see Alfred go but it makes the most sense and would be interesting to see how things work without him as he tends to work the computers, do the all the patchwork and surgery, prepare the meals, clean the house, be a guardian angel of conscience, etc. Definitely not even comparable to ASM700, no matter who dies (esp since theres already been mention of who lives).
