CONFIRMED (Again!): Disney Working On Standalone STAR WARS Movies

We've had this particular bit of news confirmed by various outlets and even those working on them, but at an annual shareholders meeting in Phoenix today, Disney themselves have said that they are indeed moving ahead with "some standalone movies" for Star Wars.

This shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, but it will surely act as a relief of sorts for those of you sick of the barrage of conflicting reports and rumours. While no specific names were mentioned, Disney CEO Bob Iger did confirm that the studio is moving ahead with a number of standalone movies based in the Star Wars universe. Below is the reports from the Associated Press.

PHOENIX (AP) — Star Wars fans have more than just Episodes 7, 8 and 9 to look forward to.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said at the annual shareholders meeting in Phoenix on Wednesday that the company is developing "some standalone movies" featuring Star Wars characters.

The news is likely to set off a new round of speculation about what's in store for the Lucasfilm franchise. The buzz has been at fever pitch levels since The Walt Disney Co. said in October it was acquiring the studio for $4 billion.

Iger didn't say which characters might be featured in the standalone films. Some Star Wars characters such as bounty hunter Boba Fett have been given bigger treatments in comic books.

So there you have it! Expect the NEXT confirmation to hopefully come in the form of a press release and details on which character will be the first to get their own solo spin-off movie. Who are you keeping your fingers crossed for? Be sure to sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

MyInnerDork - 3/6/2013, 12:08 PM
A standalone Yoda movie would still rock and my dark horse pick is a solo Kyle Katarn movie.

Netman0007 - 3/6/2013, 12:10 PM
JAR JAR BINKS MOVIE FTW!!!

Please give me Old Republic
Scabsallover - 3/6/2013, 12:17 PM
No Maul, he's better being mysterious, much like Joker.

It's hard to ACTUALLY choose what side story I'd want to see w/o finding things that would conflict canonically with my choices. Like a young Yoda would be cool, but if I'm not mistaken, he was too young to have encountered a with since their disappearance. KotOR would need to be 2-3 movies. Boba Fett I wouldn't be interested in (on paper) unless it was done by Kevin Smith. Young Han Solo seems dull to me. Maybe a Grievous movie, but it would be tough listening to that voice a whole movie.

FireKnightRises - 3/6/2013, 12:22 PM
Old Republic can be the new movie series, so much potential in that expanded universe

If Disney smart, they should focus on that instead another skywalker movie
Turner - 3/6/2013, 12:23 PM
@ batz I agree a Jedi/Sith origin would be sweet.

ComicFan523 - 3/6/2013, 12:44 PM
Fett, Yoda, and early Han Solo and Chewbacca. I'd like to see an adaptation of Shadows of the Empire too along with the Thrawn Trilogy.
Danbojohnj - 3/6/2013, 12:46 PM
Darth Vader hunting Jedi with the assistance of Boba Fett and other bounty hunters and assorted Spec Ops Imperial troopers.

Rouge Squadron.

Storm Trooper movie in the vein of Black Hawk Down.

Clone Wars live action,Obi Wan centre stage.
TheAbomination - 3/6/2013, 12:47 PM
Give Boba his own film and I'll be content.
IIIAdamantiumIII - 3/6/2013, 12:49 PM

Rambaldi47 - 3/6/2013, 12:58 PM
Darth Vader/Boba Fett film set between Ep 3 and 4. I want to see Vader in the suit taking out the surviving Jedi. Obi-Wan solo film starring Ewan would be awesome. I'd love a Darth Bane film, but I don't think Disney would go that violent or would want to make a film where the villain wins.
silverdog - 3/6/2013, 12:58 PM
Lando unchained... make it happen disney.
SpectacularJoShFest - 3/6/2013, 12:58 PM

Whoops...how did the last pics get here? *wink wink*
Odin - 3/6/2013, 1:12 PM
Han solo movie with Boba Fett as enemy, I hope.
yingyangpalms - 3/6/2013, 1:17 PM
Maybe they shouldve redone the Prequels and erase all the damage Lucas did to most characters before doing standalone films.
wanttobejonahhex - 3/6/2013, 1:17 PM
Odin- that would be awesome!
wanttobejonahhex - 3/6/2013, 1:18 PM
Yoda! Yoda!
wanttobejonahhex - 3/6/2013, 1:20 PM
Man I really can't wait. Disney might be the evil empire but they no the value of a franchise done well.
villain001 - 3/6/2013, 1:20 PM
Yoda is my fav character in any movie ever.. but i dont want to see a Yoda stand alone. I like the mystery behind his origin.
TankD - 3/6/2013, 1:22 PM

Sounds like Disney maybe doing for Star Wars what Marvel did for Avengers....hmmmmm....

STAND ALONES -
Yes:
Shadows of the Empire
Thrawn Trilogy
Rogue squadron
Old Republic
Jedi Academy

No:
Jedi one-shots
Bounty hunter on-shots

Mark my words...Whats gonna happen is Disney's gonna treat live-action SW like they do all their beloved characters - make too many damn movies and push them on us so much that the quantity will take priority over quality.

-just my two cents-
JoeMomma29 - 3/6/2013, 2:12 PM
Gusto love the hair!

NeoBaggins - 3/6/2013, 2:22 PM
Stand-alone/Spinoffs= bad idea.
LordOfTheZegaRealm - 3/6/2013, 2:45 PM
I'm glad they're expanding their movies to other stories. I would like an old republic movie. How bought you guys?
Facade - 3/6/2013, 3:44 PM
I can only support a Fett stand alone movie.

Han Solo will likely happen, but implies a younger look alike, which would be difficult to convincingly pull off. Urban does a great McCoy but generally looks nothing like DeForest Kelly...Quinto is a great look alike, but the rest of the Star Trek recasts are meh. Had Urban and Quinto not been good enough, I don't think the rebooted Star Trek would have been a good OS relaunch.

As for the other rumor of a Yoda solo project...[frick] no do I want to see a planet of Yodalings or know about his back story (10 minutes worth maybe).

What else is there to explore as solo movies? Um, a young Mace Windu or Count Dooku...nah. [frick] anything from the prequels.

I'll pay for a Fett solo story, but probably not for anything else (even Maul, he didn't impress that much).
exodus147 - 3/6/2013, 5:00 PM
Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy. Best Star Wars story every.

If anyone deserves a Star Wars stand-alone film, it's these mofos:

Think about it?

How'd they come together as a band? Did they ever get famous and go on galactic tours? Was there in-fighting within the group? Did they ever snort space coke off a Bothan hookers butt crack? These are important questions!!

I want to know about their trials and tribulations, dammit!!
pepe - 3/7/2013, 6:35 AM
Finally... Jar-jars revenge is coming!
