Oz: The Great and Powerful has lived up to early expectations by grossing $80.3 million in North America this weekend. This is a fantastic opening for the Disney movie and the studio are sure to be happy with these results, especially after spending $215 million on the movie and an additional $100 million on a big marketing push. Reviews have been mixed, but a B+ CinemaScore and good word of mouth have led to a +25% bump from Friday to Saturday. It's estimated gross is $23.1 million for today after earning $33 million yesterday. The Wizard of Oz prequel scored an additional $69.9M overseas, giving it a worldwide total of $150 million. In North America, 55% of moviegoers saw the film in 3D, while females outnumbered males 52% to 48%. Read my review of Oz: The Great and Powerful by clicking HERE. "Oz The Great and Powerful" imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

James Franco as Oscar Diggs/Oz

RorMachine - 3/10/2013, 10:45 AM
It was good. I didn't love it though - still it was better than a lot of similar movies out there.
XavierLehnsherr - 3/10/2013, 10:50 AM
I'm into it for Michelle Williams. Been wanting to bang her since Species.
Hellsing - 3/10/2013, 11:00 AM
The movie was good it wasn't great but I think kids are gonna love it. There moments that has the magic of wizard of oz. I might be in the minority but I thought Franco was miscast in the role dude has zero charisma. But the witches were good but the stand outs were zach braff and the china girl. Plus its kinda slow in the middle but picks up in last half hour.
DoubleD - 3/10/2013, 11:16 AM
WOW ! Besides this movie making money it looks like its going be a bad year at the box office. Nothing but bomb after bomb. Lets hope Ironman and Superman don't follow the bomb path.

Even OZ did well opening weekend but the reviews are not that great. Could see a big drop off next weekend.
HughJasol - 3/10/2013, 11:17 AM
I worked on this movie and saw it last week so I'm glad that it's doing great so far. On to the sequel.
Hellsing - 3/10/2013, 11:25 AM
@DoubleD its March dude, IM and MOS are summer movies which tend to a whole lot better because you know people really do have time to go watch the movie. IM3 is coming off the Avengers which is going to give it a boost(plus its being released internationally first so IF the movie is good then thats going to give the movie an extra boost) and MOS is the return of Superman to the big screen so I highly doubt there going to bomb. The one movie thats most likely to bomb (but I hope that I'm wrong) is the Great Gatsby, its sandwiched between Trek and IM3.
Hellsing - 3/10/2013, 11:29 AM
Also World War Z seems like it hasn't created any buzz what so ever so that definitely my bomb hard, also After Earth is a huge question mark. Of course every one on here is aware that this is a M Night Shamamamaladingalong movie but to the general audience the thing they notice first is Will Smith and his son. So its gonna be interesting to see if Will Smith still has the star power to get peoples backsides in to the cinema.
Khaleesi - 3/10/2013, 11:30 AM
Just watched it last night. I loved it!
Ceejay - 3/10/2013, 11:37 AM
@MisterNiceGuy - Not really, $80 million weekend opening is decent but films been doing that and more pretty regularly since the turn of the century. Doing over a $100 million for the weekend has become the real box office expectation. That's why Avengers doing $200 million in a weekend last year was so phenomenal.

Oz's opening is currently number 39th in the all time biggest domestic weekend openings.
AnungUnRama - 3/10/2013, 11:45 AM
