Iron Man 3 continues to take the box office by storm, this time raking in an estimated $15 - $18 million when it finally made its North American debut last night. While we're still waiting on the confirmed figures, this would mean that the threequel isn't too far behind Marvel's The Avengers. That opened last year with $18.7 million, making it the highest superhero midnight opening of all-time. However, that was for midnights ONLY, so it's obvious that Iron Man 3 won't be able to break that record. Regardless, this is still an amazing start for the film and undoubtedly only another step in its journey to ultimately hitting the $1 billion mark. Have any of you guys seen it yet?

UPDATE: We now have the confirmed numbers. As you can see, it's closer to $15 million than $18 million, but this is still a solid start for Iron Man 3's North American box office run. As of right now, it also has a current worldwide cume of $361 million and it's widely thought that the movie will earn between $165 - $180 million in America by Sunday.

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
