Joss Whedon Talks More About His Role As Marvel Studios' Creative Consultant

Part of Joss Whedon's deal after helming The Avengers not only included returning to direct the sequel, but also acting as Marvel Studios' "Creative Consultant" in their Phase Two plans. Here, he clarifies what exactly his role with the studio is.

Joss Whedon did a last-minute polish of the Captain America: The First Avenger screenplay while working on The Avengers for Marvel Studios, and after the latter went on to gross over $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office, they wasted no time in signing him up as both the director of the sequel and their Creative Consultant. Talking to Empire Magazine recently, Whedon had this to say about his role overseeing the solo movies of Phase Two which are all leading to the reassembling of Earth's Mightiest Heroes in 2015. "Kevin is terrific storyteller and a criminal mastermind with these films. He knows exactly what he's trying to do, not just to serve the whole universe but with each movie. Having the opportunity to help realise, to say, "Well, isn't this what you're going for over here?" ... I mean, I'm not going to get in the soup with some other director. I'm going to say what I think of screenplay or a cut and then I leave the room bowing, because you don't take that away from someone. Ultimately, Kevin is the Captain. I'm Black Widow. Well, I'm dressed as Black Widow..." So, while Whedon obviously doesn't take too much of a hands on approach in terms of interfering with the vision of the other filmmakers, it will come as a relief to many to learn that he at least keeps a watchful eye on them.

LMFAO! Joss and his weird sense of humor. Love it!
TayDee - 5/30/2013, 12:21 PM
Sign him up for Phase III. He doesn't have to direct, just have him there.
ksommer - 5/30/2013, 12:24 PM
If Kevin is overseeing everything, Joss doesn't really have a lot of input. He gives his opinion and moves on... I wish he had a bigger role.
Reasonnnn - 5/30/2013, 12:27 PM
^ you're basing that on one paragraph? lolz
NoAssemblyReqd - 5/30/2013, 12:30 PM

Damn, that just means we'll get 10 more M. Night Shyamalan movies.
ProfOJ - 5/30/2013, 12:34 PM
I was a big fan of his other movies full metal jacket, titanic and goodfellas.....oh wait that was orson wells.
FirstAvenger - 5/30/2013, 12:34 PM
"I'm dressed as Black Widow" o_O
ksommer - 5/30/2013, 12:37 PM
@Reasonnn, I'm not saying that is how it is... But that is how it seems based on the quote.
TheClemster - 5/30/2013, 12:38 PM
Joss "Geek God" Whedon
TheClemster - 5/30/2013, 12:39 PM
Yup Gus and I did got that Pic signed by Excelsior :)
exe - 5/30/2013, 12:40 PM
Well, Kevin and Joss, you failed with Iron Turd 3.
TheClemster - 5/30/2013, 12:40 PM
but you did too no???

RamonSuarez - 5/30/2013, 12:44 PM
Joss = boss

Millar = hack

Nolan = doesn't like comics

The end.
tazmaniak - 5/30/2013, 12:47 PM
@MARVELPSYCHO79, a movie being terrible or having terrible reviews doesn't necessarily mean it's going to bomb. Every Transformer and Twilight film got terrible reviews, but that didn't stop them from making assloads of money. A bad movie isn't always a bomb.

We'll see.
TheClemster - 5/30/2013, 12:50 PM
Look at all this spandex you just look ... fit
SageMode - 5/30/2013, 12:52 PM
Joss is the man. Don't argue

Amazing512 - 5/30/2013, 12:57 PM
I love Whedon's humor. Marvel films are in good hands.
kenjim152 - 5/30/2013, 12:59 PM
So real difference between nolan and Whedon, according to what he just said Whedon kinda fixes what the studio tells him to do and oversee, still He has to do whats he is told to and Nolan..... Well he usually tells the studio what to do and what no to do.... I guess it is quite obvious who is a better director and the most creative one.
thebearjew - 5/30/2013, 1:05 PM
I really hope some of the marvel studio movies get more serious, with Thanos on the way i dont see how they couldnt hes such an evil powerful force
Mechagino - 5/30/2013, 1:06 PM
Yet he didn't see the problem with the mandarin. :(
Tevii - 5/30/2013, 1:06 PM
I bet Joss does not do Avengers 3 in hopes he can land a Star wars sequel
Durf - 5/30/2013, 1:24 PM
lol, he's got such a weird sense of humor. It's interesting that he doesn't have a more hands on approach, but I guess it makes it so he doesn't step on other directors toes

@79: Once I heard it was a M Night movie, I tuned out
TheAbomination - 5/30/2013, 1:29 PM
In Whedon we trust.
Durf - 5/30/2013, 1:30 PM
@79: Well with good reason. He hasn't made a good movie in years
MattSpatola - 5/30/2013, 1:32 PM
Is this an old interview or didn't he say the same thing before when asked about his role?
Mechagino - 5/30/2013, 1:33 PM
Still I like iron man 3 a lot but I really don't see why he was fearing it. It was good but not THAT good and possibly the weakest of the movieverse. Hopefully he won't make Thanos a joke like The Mandarin. D':
Durf - 5/30/2013, 1:37 PM
@79: Agree completely. Don't know why Signs is thought of as such a good movie. It's complete garbage
Gmoney84 - 5/30/2013, 1:46 PM
I highly doubt Whedon had much input on the Mandarin raping.
MightyZeus - 5/30/2013, 1:59 PM
Say what you want about Whedon but he did make a great super hero film. A 'team' of heroes working together and he pulled it off.
YoungThanos - 5/30/2013, 2:37 PM
Whedon clearly stated that he had no input in IM3 because the script was already being written while he was still working on Avengers and before he became Creative consultant.

This isn't Millar's crap here where he's just spitting out words while directors at the very same studio contradicts him.

Whedon is actually getting things done!

As a result Singer shut down Millar's X-men/FF crossover crap and somehow uses Whedon as his creative consultant as well. LOL!

kemuael - 5/30/2013, 4:00 PM
Iron man is always the weak link in these phases lol
UrbanKnight - 5/30/2013, 4:45 PM
"Whedon is the Anti-Nolan. lol"
Funny, they are both probably gay, righ?
Not judging, just an observation.

Whedon is either very confident with his masculinity or...
UrbanKnight - 5/30/2013, 4:48 PM
I love Gusto's sense of humor.
ricko8687 - 5/30/2013, 5:45 PM
In Joss we trust
Ace101 - 5/30/2013, 6:04 PM
@YOUNGTHANOS thank you! At least someone on this site remembered
SnapperCarr - 5/30/2013, 9:26 PM
@Intruder Ironic who it's coming from....
EarOne - 5/31/2013, 4:22 AM
Whedon's da man..and he RESPECTS other creative peers, so thus, he WON'T oversteps the boundaries and DICTATES any of em. he'd make suggestions or comments, but that's bout it. as for Feige..well, he's the guy who HIRES whedon and the other directors and other crew members and cast, OF COURSE, he's the guy telling everyone what he WANTS. that happens in EVERY working place.
GrayMatter - 6/1/2013, 1:28 AM
I don't get what the big deal is. Whedon is clearly just an adviser. He may very well have said "the fans are going to be pissed" about the whole Mandarin thing, but Black and Feige were clearly the ones in charge of IM3.

@UrbanKnight - Not sure if you were joking or not, but seeing as how both Whedon and Nolan are married (to women) and have children, I highly doubt that either of them are gay.
Starweb - 6/3/2013, 12:40 PM
Joss Whedon did a very good job with the first Avengers movie. I think that with The Avengers sequel he'll make another awesome movie like the first one!
He also says that the sequel will introduce (the real) Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, so it's really awesome!!!
