Guess What? Jeff Bridges Was As "Underwhelmed" By R.I.P.D. As The Rest Of Us

With Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges cast as the two lead characters, R.I.P.D. really should have been one of the funnest movies of the summer. Unfortunately, it ended up being arguably the most disappointing, and a box office flop to boot. Hit the jump for Bridges' thoughts on how it turned out.

Costing $130 million to produce, R.I.P.D. would earn only $12.7 million when it debuted in North America back in July, while its current worldwide total of $68 million makes it clear that this is yet another 2013 movie to make a huge loss. In a recent interview with GQ, Jeff Bridges (who many of you will remember from Iron Man and hopefully his many, MANY other films) was asked to share his thoughts on both his experiences working on R.I.P.D. and how it ultimately turned out. "I had such a great time working on that movie," he said. "I remember what we were doing. I thought: This could be fun to see. And when I saw it, I was a little underwhelmed. For my mind, the studio made some, uh, choices that I wouldn't have made." As for how he feels about the disappointing box office performance, Bridges added: "It's kind of fun when the movie's coming out. It's like having a horse in the race. And they're lining up, and they're off! And you're rooting for your horse. And in this case, the jockey fell off the horse and you came in last. Ha ha ha. You know. That happens sometimes." What did you guys think of R.I.P.D.?

Starkasm - 9/19/2013, 4:15 AM
Didnt see this but the ads looked pretty lame. Jeff bridges voice was irritating too.

He's honest without being a prick, a classy guy.
mctrinket - 9/19/2013, 4:36 AM
Didn't see it.
Highflyer - 9/19/2013, 4:49 AM
I didn't think it was terrible. It was a kind of entertaining if u shut ur brain off. I didn't go in expecting 'inception.'
hipnosis - 9/19/2013, 4:51 AM
It wasn't a bad movie. It was no True Grit, but it was a fun popcorn movie. Easily as funny as Men In Black. I don't understand why the critics all want to tear apart all the comic book movies lately....To say the movie sucked either means the person didn't see it, or they have a lead heart. Either way, it was fun and enjoyable. Bridges stole the show, of course.
Montrovant - 9/19/2013, 4:58 AM
@hipnosis R.I.P.D. was little more than a pale imitation of Men In Black.
SoundWave - 9/19/2013, 4:59 AM
They have killed the main comic book intrigue of this story in the first minutes, the movie just can't work after we know WHO killed Raynold's character, it's became impossoble to watch a boring adaptation story without main detective storyline.

And VFX was awfull like in "Man in Black 3". Like Stephen Sommers make this movie, he also has a crap of VFX in his unwathcable "cartoons" about mummies, joes, vampires... meh...

But the movie is not so bad as "Green Lantern" and not so dissapoint as "Iron Man 3".
"RIPD" is really not the worse cbm of the year, not the most awfull summer picture. It just a "one time funny movie" without anything... Schwentke has nice style, he did good job with afwull script and film a watchable movie for one evening.

This movie had so much potential. Too bad!
MrNiklander - 9/19/2013, 5:28 AM

Love his honesty here!

This guy is one of the greats!

He's always picked pretty interesting characters to play over the years, some that've made him sound like the dialogue is currently battling a 5 minute old Gobstopper in his mouth and he's made them great to watch!

Marisa miller was fabulous

I knew this movie would bomb, it has Ryan Reynolds in it.
GodzillaKart - 9/19/2013, 6:09 AM
To bad RIDP was no good

Bridges is a fantastic actor, and was one of the greatest CBM villains ever in IM.
TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - 9/19/2013, 6:23 AM
I enjoyed it for what it was. Could it have been better? Yes. Was it terrible? Not really. I've seen worse things where I've had to turn it off.

As mentioned above, was as alright as MIB & I personally thought it was better than MIB 3.

Reynolds, Bacon & Bridges, a trio I'd like to see together again on a film that would get much better fan fare or acclaim than this poor sucker did.

Definitely wouldn't mind a Bacon & Reynolds team up movie for sure.
jimoakley666 - 9/19/2013, 6:29 AM
Has it even been released in Britain yet?
jimoakley666 - 9/19/2013, 6:30 AM
Grif just proved what an utter moron he is with that last statement.
Philvis - 9/19/2013, 6:48 AM
Haven't seen it yet. Will probably catch it at RedBox. That being said, seeing the trailer, I didn't think it looked like an awful movie, however, there is no way it should have had a nearly $130 million budget. The budget for a movie like this should not have been over $30-35 million tops. This was a budgeting mistake on par with The Lone Ranger or John Carter (which I really liked). These studios cannot fork out $100+ million budgets on crapshoots.
Arrowhead77 - 9/19/2013, 6:51 AM
Don't waste your time with these other goofy movies Jeff, get back to making TRON3 and TRON4...
SnapperCarr - 9/19/2013, 6:53 AM
Ryan Reynolds is box office poison.
MarkV - 9/19/2013, 6:56 AM
Nothing could be as disappointing as IM3.
SpectacularJoShFest - 9/19/2013, 7:00 AM
This movie had "flop" written all over it...I'm surprised nobody else saw this coming...
Dunejedi - 9/19/2013, 7:11 AM
Yeah, this movie was as obviously an insta-bomb as Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. Trailers can be an invaluable tool in saving yourself the time on shitty movies.

Jeff Bridges rules, though.
sameoldthing - 9/19/2013, 7:17 AM
Grif doesn't actually believe anything he comments on.
It's just his job to say super negative & offensive things.
HachibiTheMC - 9/19/2013, 7:32 AM
it wasn't that bad. it could have been better, sure and the plot wasn't that deep but I took it for what it was, a 2 hour romp through a funhouse.

Reynolds wasn't bad in it. It's just the current trend to slam him - I call it the Affleck Effect.

Bridges was comedy gold. I forgot how downright funny he could be.
TheDpool - 9/19/2013, 9:22 AM
I will always love Bridges because 1. The Big Lebowski 2. True Grit (remake) 3.Tron (1&2) 4.Crazy Heart and 5.In every interview I have seen him in he seems like the coolest guy in the world.
dellamorte1872 - 9/19/2013, 10:48 AM
Never want to see it, I can't stand REYNOLDS
Battabing - 9/19/2013, 12:26 PM
Let's be honest here: Reynolds is box office poison now, especially for CBMs.
MJPETTY7 - 9/19/2013, 12:30 PM
I enjoyed it. Not the best movie of the summer but I laughed!
RetroFit - 9/19/2013, 3:22 PM
There's only 1 reason I'm glad this bombed (otherwise I couldn't care less) and that's the fact Reynolds picked this over Deadpool and left that project dead in the water as a result. I saw dump him for that and bring in Seann Williams Scott (Stifler). He can do the exact same thing but better (IMO).
AstroZombie - 9/19/2013, 5:14 PM
Actors have so little control over what eventually ends up on the screen, the best they can hope for sometimes is that the people they're working for are competent enough to deliver a watchable film.
MightyZeus - 9/19/2013, 10:20 PM
I felt sorry for Jeff that he was in this crapfest.
