Catching Fire was way better than I expected and surprised a lot of ppl tha werent quite fond of the first. It really deserves it.
DEVLIN712 - 12/15/2013, 8:30 AM
The Hobbit has the Christmas fortnight in the bag, can't see Anchorman challenging it
charlie2094 - 12/15/2013, 8:33 AM
Glad they're both doing well! Really enjoyed Hobbit, Smaug was brilliant, and Catching Fire was one of my favourite films this year, fantastic watch, imagine Hunger Games will finish around $800, and Hobbit around $900
Ramiel - 12/15/2013, 8:34 AM
A 13% difference from last year's $84.6M weekend opening. Hmmm
ALmazing - 12/15/2013, 8:34 AM
That girl is on fire!
Ramiel - 12/15/2013, 8:38 AM
In other news, Thor: TDW is now at $620M worldwide. For Asgard!
charlie2094 - 12/15/2013, 8:38 AM
@TheHeat

After the reception the last one had after all the hype, a drop was kind of expected, imagine it will probably pick up again for the third film
IM53 - 12/15/2013, 8:41 AM
Smaug kicked ass! I loved it but Anchorman will take some away next week. The power of Burgundy awaits.

Legalos FTW
Ramiel - 12/15/2013, 8:45 AM
@Charlie

Yea, that sucks. I loved Unexpected Journey. Hopefully, 'There and Back Again' crosses $100M on opening weekend.
Lhornbk - 12/15/2013, 8:45 AM
Unless Hobbit 2 really picks it up, there is NO WAY it makes more than Catching Fire. Hobbit 2 made $100 million LESS in its opening weekend than Catching Fire did when it opened, so it'll have to pick up some serious speed to catch up. I think maybe a lot of people have realized that it shouldn't have been split into 3 films, which is why this one opened up with less than the first one.
MrCBM56 - 12/15/2013, 8:49 AM
2 of my favorite movies this year doing great!

Smaug was... GREAT.

Seeing it again next week.

Catching fire was awesome too. The Hunger Games topped last years by a mile. Have to catch that again too.
charlie2094 - 12/15/2013, 8:59 AM
@Lhornbk

Even Hobbit 1 opened with about $100 million less than Hunger Games 2 yet still managed just over $1 Billion. Being a christmas release and being the film it is, it will have some serious legs, will definitely manage $900 million, which is probably more than Hunger Games finishes with, which will probably be around the $800 mark.

The drop was completely expected, after all the hype surrounding the first film, that was always going to be the biggest and given the response to AUJ, a drop in takings was expected, but will probably rise again for There and Back Again
BboiBlack - 12/15/2013, 9:04 AM
Hunger games 1 made 1 million more than Man of Steel? Yet people see one as a mega success and argue mos as a failure?
Whiteandgold - 12/15/2013, 9:15 AM
CATCHING FIRE > mcu
DrDoom - 12/15/2013, 9:21 AM
I like the part where people talk like the weekend is over
Rpendo - 12/15/2013, 9:26 AM
Godfather > Catching Fire

Let's make some more irrelevant comparisons!!
DrDoom - 12/15/2013, 9:26 AM
Also Hunger Games is overrated
charlie2094 - 12/15/2013, 9:26 AM
@Bbio

As 0mega said, neither film failed, that's just something some people like to say. All things considered, Hunger Games did fantastically well, Man of Steel definitely did very well but mixed reception, and unexpected competition in WWZ maybe meant it didn't quite make as much as it could...but those situations really go for every film ever
jcfrommars9 - 12/15/2013, 9:38 AM
@BboiBlack

The Hunger Games made $691,247,768, while Man of Steel made $662,845,518. That's more than a million, and is consider a mega success compared to Man of Steel because of the budgets (Man of Steel $225 million to Hunger Games $78 million), theater releases (Man of Steel 4,207 to Hunger Games 4,137) and movie formats (Man of Steel 2D, 3D, IMAX and IMAX 3D to Hunger Games 2D and IMAX). Also while Man of Steel was released in the summer, Hunger Games was released in spring. But like 0megaDaGod said, both succeeded by a long shot.
Enphlieuwince - 12/15/2013, 9:39 AM
Ppl take any opportunity to take a shot a the MCU. Lame...
DelTorite - 12/15/2013, 9:45 AM
They forgot to mention the fact that a major winter storm has been [frick]ing over the Mid-West and the East Coast.
TheWolverine08 - 12/15/2013, 9:55 AM
Nice to see a movie with a female protagonist be so successful.
JoJo1982 - 12/15/2013, 10:53 AM
@omega

I remember her in brotherhood of the wolf(a classic movie I recommend).
She would of been a great Wonder Woman back in the days, but she looks pretty old now(still hot though)
TheWolverine08 - 12/15/2013, 11:20 AM
@Omega Oh my indeed.........
JoJo1982 - 12/15/2013, 11:26 AM
@omega

Queen Hippolyta!!! Yeah she would be perfect as her, plus she could pull off being Gal Gadot sexy milf
BatManiac - 12/15/2013, 11:26 AM
Angelina Jolie should be Hippolyta.

AGoodHonestMan - 12/15/2013, 11:35 AM
Hobbit 2: 850 million - 900 million total
Hunger Games 2: 800 million - 850 million total
Thor 2: 650 million - 700 million total
Frozen: 600 million - 650 million total
AGoodHonestMan - 12/15/2013, 11:36 AM
@ Bat

Jolie would want to be the star, not a side character or co-star.
JoJo1982 - 12/15/2013, 11:45 AM
@batmaniac

Heck Noo!!!

We can't have no queen looking at her daughter like she [frick]ed her!!!!

I'll stick with Monica Bellucci
BatManiac - 12/15/2013, 11:59 AM
Jolie is a superb actress and she would make an excellent Hyppolyta.
Liverpool4life - 12/15/2013, 12:02 PM
JoJo:

You previously said to me HG:CF would reach $800 million by today. You need to follow box office trends if you are going to make such bold claims.

Lhornbk:

You should understand the HG:CF is not doing that great overseas compared to how The Hobbit will. Catching Fire hasn't even passed Thor's overseas gross yet.
JoJo1982 - 12/15/2013, 12:07 PM
@liverpool

*raise eyebrow*
Umm okay it made 740 million, I predicted 800 million... Not bad
JoJo1982 - 12/15/2013, 12:10 PM
@flexx

Lol I got the 300 rise of the empire which I admit looks good in 3D

Also got Godzilla that had the whole crowd cheering

Plus that movie with Ben Stiller where I think he's high or something traveling around the world, forgot the name.
PeepingTom - 12/15/2013, 2:43 PM
"Some people get tired of watching The Throne and decide to throw stones at it"

LMAO hahaha! This is golden.

Btw, for @WhiteandGold, Avengers, Iron Man, Thor, Thor 2, and Captain America > Hunger Games
PeepingTom - 12/15/2013, 2:46 PM
I love the MCU movies by the way. The light-hearted touch is needed for a CBM IMO.

Other than Nolan's Batman they can't really create the dark and gritty CBM's to both critical and financial success.

People still feel that superheroes are quite unrealistic, and so directors should put that concept into the film rather than try to make them as serious as Man of Steel.
TheOverlord - 12/15/2013, 3:37 PM
Weather was a major factor in the domestic opening weekend numbers for the Hobbit. A lot of major population centers faced blizzard conditions this weekend, which depressed attendance. Why is no one reporting that?
ThePowerCosmic - 12/15/2013, 4:48 PM
PeepingTom

Well said! I agree.
MightyZeus - 12/15/2013, 11:16 PM
Good for both of those movies. I'm really looking forward to watching 'The Hobbit: DOS'. The reviews have been a little mixed among critics which only peaks my interests even more. It's a shame the film isn't released in Australia yet.

I think Catching Fire is worth the wait. I'll check it out on blu ray when its released.
loki668 - 12/15/2013, 11:58 PM
My girlfriend finally made me watch "Hunger Games: Catching Fire". I gotta tell ya, I felt mislead by the title. I thought that "catching fire" meant that she caught gonorrhea or something.
RetroFit - 12/16/2013, 6:31 AM
Hobbit will kill it over the Christmas holidays. A LOT of people are waiting for time off so they can go during the day with their family.
