This is terrible.
duncboy - 1/18/2014, 11:00 AM
What a garbage comic all around.
AsgardianHobo - 1/18/2014, 11:08 AM
have not been a fan of Ms. Thing, that's for sure... Who the [frick] thought of that?
Franshu - 1/18/2014, 11:18 AM
Agh... Allred. I still don't undertsand how that guy gets to work in mainstream comics, he's terrible. An don't come to me with that "he's going for a 60's/vintage style", because he's not. He's just an awful artist... I mean, look, even the perspective in the cover is messed up. And trust me, guys like Jack Kirby or Steve Ditko, you may say whatever you want about them, but in spite of their own particluar styles, they had a solid knowledge of the basics of drawing (perspective, anatomy, etc).
MercwithMouth - 1/18/2014, 11:26 AM
That art is worse than superior venom. Horrific.
MrCBM56 - 1/18/2014, 11:30 AM
No... Just... No.
mctrinket - 1/18/2014, 11:32 AM
This artwork...
FoneBone - 1/18/2014, 11:41 AM
That Mike Allred art is just...Its amazing! He's definitely one of the best artists of the last twenty years.
Gigacrusher45 - 1/18/2014, 11:41 AM
What in the hell am I looking at?
FoneBone - 1/18/2014, 11:44 AM
It's very weird to see people here not like Mike Allred. I've never heard of it. This is actually the ONLY place I've heard it, and the first time I've seen people not like his art. He's like, one of the most critically acclaimed comic book artists of all time, up there with Jim Lee.
RexDartEskimoSpy - 1/18/2014, 11:46 AM
Okay, we get it, you don't like Allred's art. You could at least read the, words.

I wonder how many times they've had a C-list character throw down with Doom to prove they're tough? I can think of Luke Cage and Squirrel Girl off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are more.
FoneBone - 1/18/2014, 11:47 AM
I like and appreciate superheroy-posed-larger-than-life looking art like Jim Lee, but I also like storytelling art, like John Romita Sr. and Jack Kirby and Mike Allred, which is what comic book art is about, first and foremost.
BAMF413 - 1/18/2014, 11:48 AM
Does Doom got pink eye or something?
crowlers - 1/18/2014, 11:54 AM
This art is amazing. I agree with FoneBone this might be the only place I've seen people not like Mike Allred. He's one of the best artists working today.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 1/18/2014, 11:55 AM
Art is terrible but dialogue is great. Making lang interesting.
charlie2094 - 1/18/2014, 11:58 AM
Allreds art is amazing!! Seriously don't understand the hate (only on here though) for it...it's one of the few titles to actually have any character to it, like Hawkeye....this has been a great series, the writing is brilliant too
MarvelousMarty - 1/18/2014, 11:58 AM
Worst I've seen. Ever.
Objectivelybiased - 1/18/2014, 12:11 PM
I hate to see this book go. It was definitely up there with Young Avengers, Superior Spiderman, and GotG as my favorite Marvel launches. I love Mike Allred's work and thought this was a good use of him and fraction. I don't get the hate but to each his own.
GodzillaKart - 1/18/2014, 12:26 PM
WTF am I looking at here?
avengingson - 1/18/2014, 12:26 PM
Yeah, I really hate to see this end. This series rules. I've been an Allred fan since Madman.... I just don't understand all the hate for his work..... Did I read somewhere he'll be on a new upcoming Surfer series?
Humperdink - 1/18/2014, 12:38 PM
I love Allred (he's not for everyone though I guess) and I used to read FF many many years ago.

Looking at this makes me wonder....what happened?

Is that the disembodied head of one of the mole-men?

AgeofApocalypse - 1/18/2014, 12:39 PM
Worst. Art. Ever.
DEVLIN712 - 1/18/2014, 12:50 PM
After seeing this... I now believe that I'm a qualified comic book artist
AlexanderLykins - 1/18/2014, 1:03 PM
Although the art is terrible I kind of liked the series.
AlexanderLykins - 1/18/2014, 1:04 PM
Also Ms. Thing is the worst Marvel character ever!
jimoakley666 - 1/18/2014, 1:09 PM
Yeah, CBM is where the morons come to hang out. Allred is a cracking artist.
SCURVYDOG619 - 1/18/2014, 1:09 PM
Fighting Doom hand-to-hand?

REALLY?

Lang must have missed the briefing about Doom's talents at sorcery....
Joementum - 1/18/2014, 1:12 PM
@avengingson ditto to Madman. The best zombie-hero ever. Hopefully Allred can get a Madman CBM done.

Also, $10,000 says Scott Lang will have his own ongoing before Antman 2015.
Joementum - 1/18/2014, 1:18 PM
coming soon

HeadPool420 - 1/18/2014, 1:29 PM
I love Allreds art! It has a retro feel to it. His art makes me feel like I felt when I was a kid looking at Jack Kirby's art. Love it!!!
Kyos - 1/18/2014, 2:55 PM
It's fascinating to see how people either love or hate the art. Maybe there's really something to the art you have to have some kind of deeper understanding of or connection to, because I honestly think especially the last page looks just terrible.

But I'm willing to admit that this might actually be one of the rare cases of "I just don't get it". :)
NovaCorpsFan - 1/18/2014, 3:15 PM
Dan Slott is going to ruin Surfer. I mean that one page had awful dialogue that has never been Surfer's style f speaking. He's supposed to be refined and majestic not say things like, "Better silver down." then turn Zenn-Lavian again.
ThePowerCosmic - 1/18/2014, 3:41 PM
I love Allreds art but I didn't expect most people on this site to get it, especially when jim lee wins best artist of 2014. What is this the 90s? That guys work is so uninspired and hasn't changed or improved since 1992. Marvel is reaching out to more i dependent artists which gives so much more style and variety to their books. I love it! FF is a great book.
ThePowerCosmic - 1/18/2014, 3:42 PM

Magnus

Why thank you sir!

Actually what I said is less of an opinion and more of a fact. Come to any Marvel Comic Article where a different style of art is experimented with and you will get the majority of comments that say "Shit Art". So Yes, I do like to think I have a better more thought out opinion than that.

Sorry but I just don't get the attitude on this site to dismiss everything without even giving it a try. It is such a close minded view and it is one that is associated with comic fanboys.

Sorry if my opinion offended you. But constant comments like "Shit Art" offend me. It's close minded and immature. I applaud people who can explain why they don't like something.
ThePowerCosmic - 1/18/2014, 6:07 PM
Magnus

Well I explained myself more than that but if you are going pull quotes and misinterpret what I say why bother trying to communicate with you.
MightyZeus - 1/18/2014, 6:55 PM
I dont mind the artwork it's very kitsch. I'll be looking forward to picking this issue up.
damntree - 1/18/2014, 7:50 PM
Who cares about the shit art; the writing is [frick]ing terrible. Why the hell would Doom strip his armor to fight Lang? It makes no sense.
ADParker - 1/18/2014, 8:40 PM
To those saying that they have never heard hate for Allred's art anywhere but here; Were you not hanging around comic shops when he started on X-Force (which morphed into X-Statix)? Because I heard that a lot (in Real Life) back then as well.

I hate the art, to the point that it distracts me too much to enjoy the stories or even assess how good or bad they might otherwise be. I think it is not a simple matter of "I hate that art" though, but its use in mainstream marvel Universe comics. I rather fondly recall his art in Madman, it really worked there. I think it really works was the offbeat irreverence of such tales, where there is no concerns with making it feel like a 'real' world of any kind (laws of physics and proportion etc. be damned.)

I would (if still reading on a large scale) probably on the one hand avoid a mainstream comic like this because of this kind of art, and on the other pick up a more offbeat comic (like madman) because of that same art.

To my taste (others; like the former owner of my local comic shop where I worked for a while disagree, and that is just fine) it is fine art, but just not suited to this specific area of the medium.
Kyos - 1/18/2014, 11:37 PM
"but i meant, personally, i'm surprised to actually see him so dismissed as being a crappy artist, i mean, like people saying it looks a 7 year old did it or whatever."

A 7 year old? No. But I have to say that when I look at that last page I'd rather think "woah, that's really decent fan-art from some talented young Marvel enthusiast, maybe if he works hard he might actually do this for a living one day" than "wow, that's the amazing and beloved art of famous and accomplished artist XY".

It doesn't look bad to me, just not like something I'd expect in an actually published comic by one of the big companies. But I know shit about art and usually can't give much more complex critique than "I think it looks good" and "I think it does not". And I haven't really read many superhero comics for quite some time now.

You mentioned Quitely (had to look him up). I believe he worked on X-Men when I finally stopped even buying the comics occasionally. I just didn't like the art style at all. I probably like this here art better than what I remember from him, but still what he did had a more... idk, "professional" feel to it?

I have to say, though, that I didn't dislike what I saw of the new Allred Silver Surfer, so well, whatever... ;)
