Kallark Kent Reports: Zack Snyder's Batman, influences and thoughts.

In this editorial I discuss the possible influences and my thoughts the Batman suit designed for Sack Snyder's "Batman vs Superman."

We all have been waiting for this moment since the tentatively titled “Batman vs Superman” was announced last year and today Zack Snyder has officially released the first look at Ben Affleck wearing the new Batman, designed by Michael Wilkinson.

In my personal opinion this is the most comic book accurate interpretation yet, a total departure from the rubber suits seen in the 90’s movies and nowhere near as grounded as the bat armor seen in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy.

There are clear comic book influences at play here, which rings true to a lot of rumors that have been going around for months. So let’s go through some of the most evident:

Jim Lee’s Batman

I think the first impression that I got from Snyder’s picture is that the cowl is influenced by Jim Lee’s take on Batman. The short earns on a Batman costume hasn't been attempted in live action since perhaps Adam West’s and it definitely brings a little bit of a fresh look to an already familiar face. You could also argue that some of the seam/line work of the costume is reminiscent of Lee's Batman from the New 52 design.

Frank Miller's Batman

This one should be more than given not only because it has been known for a while that Miller’s “Dark Knight Returns” is going to heavily influence “Batman vs Superman” but there are also a lot of the characteristics taken from his take on the Batman suit. The emblem is my main take from this interpretation, previously seen when the movie was announced, but this take can also be attributed for influenced the way the cowl looks since it also features the short ears.

Arkham’s Batman

Probably the best series Comic Book based video game ever produced and in my opinion it might have had
some influence on the final look on Snyder’s Batman.  I think if you compared them both, they are pretty similar in texture and in the way Batman’s body is portrayed. Arkham’s Batman is probably the most physically imposing interpretation of the Caped crusader yet, outside of the comics of course, and when I look at the way the musculature is portrayed in Affleck’s costume it makes me reminiscent of the first 2 Arkham games costume.

Lee Bermejo’s Batman

This one was rumored and it turned out it wasn’t very far off. This take on Batman was more utilitarian, somewhat grounded without going with an armor look. It also features a cowl with short ears and an emblem that cover most of the chest

My Personal Thoguhts:

I really like this interpretation, and one of the reasons is that once started looking at it I could clearly see what the artist were referencing when they were designing this. This suit is a treat to Batman fans and any comic book movie fans in general. I like the leathery texture of the cowl and the texture carries through to the cape, unlike the clothy cape in Nolan’s Batman. I like the overall texture of the suit, and the folds indicating it’s a suit and not some rubber sculpted armor. I like the scratches it as on the emblem, it gives that wear and tear look implying that he has been crime fighting for a while. I like the size of the logo, again, not afraid of going too comicbooky and unapologetically showing the Batman logo, something that has been missing for a while in Batman suits. I like the belt, a little bulky but again, loving the obvious comic book feel of this. And last but not least, I like how it also matches the organic style of the Superman suit form Man of steel.

After looking at this picture I’m left wanting more. I wonder what the full suit looks like; I wonder what colors they decided to go with, it looks like they might have gone black and grey but I’m curious to see if they decided to add a little blue instead, wishful thinking perhaps. It’s a very exciting time to be a comic book movie fan indeed.

What do you guys think? I am curious to know what your thoughts are, what influences did I miss? Did you like this new batman suit? Would you have liked they had gone in a more utilitarian/armored direction? What do you think the colors are going to be like? Leave your thoughts down below and thank you for reading.

Good editorial, and yes this new suit its influenced by Lee´s Batman

Still the logo seems odd..
MrBlackJack - 5/13/2014, 12:47 PM
Your Jim Lee section repeats itself at one point, but other than that nice write up!
batmanvsuperman - 5/13/2014, 12:47 PM
The suit is [frick]ing awesome
PAF - 5/13/2014, 12:47 PM
Sorry but I don't see Jim Lee at all.
KallarkKent - 5/13/2014, 12:48 PM
^I can definitely see that, I like it for the reasons I stated in the article, but I understand your point of view.
KallarkKent - 5/13/2014, 12:51 PM
@MrBlackJack- Thank you for pointing that mistake :)
PAF - 5/13/2014, 12:52 PM
I love the cowl. My only one complaint is the neck. It looks like they went back to that stiff head piece from before. I'm hoping I'm wrong.
ScorpioRisin - 5/13/2014, 1:06 PM
I was worried too, but since looking at it closer it seems the material of the cowl and the cape is the same, which seems leather-like. I think that will help with the stiffness of it.
QuestiontheAnswer - 5/13/2014, 1:53 PM
Ben was the only good thing in Daredevil.
RobGrizzly - 5/13/2014, 1:56 PM
I don't see the Jim Lee thing. The cowl is coming from Frank Miller as well, but otherwise, nice, quick write-up.

I agree- most comic accurate suit so far.
xMichaelxScottx - 5/13/2014, 2:32 PM
I don't know. Something tells me to hate it and something else says love it. Its starting to grow on me the more I look at it, but the logo is a bit big and the suit itself looks torn up and stitched together. I think its going too much for the MoS suit look.
GoldenMan - 5/13/2014, 3:01 PM
Great piece, keep 'em coming!
The main positives I take from the suit would be:
. Muscle tone
. Costume fabric
. Organic Cowl/Cape
. Belt

. Logo -can dig the inspiration/tone, but just a tiny bit too big
. Neck - fingers crossed the Batfleck can actually move
. Ears - I actually sorta like the short ears but, like the logo, they're just that little bit too much! Also I feel with Batman being that muscular, the short ears make him look too stocky/not agile
GoldSlayer1 - 5/13/2014, 3:03 PM
I like the suit.

My only complain would probably be the logo.
and the eyes, he needs them white eyes.
Brainiac13 - 5/13/2014, 4:14 PM
Nice Article Kallark.

I love the suit.........best cowl........short ears are perfect.

I was more worried about the Noel suit rumours........it has a great Cowl but the bat sign is part of the cape.....which I hated.

staypuffed - 5/13/2014, 4:15 PM
Nice work, KallarkKent!
The suit will grow on me.
KananJarrus - 5/13/2014, 4:18 PM
Nice write up KallarkKent. The suit is perfect.
KallarkKent - 5/13/2014, 5:12 PM
Thanks for the thumbs up guys :)
GoldSlayer1 - 5/13/2014, 5:27 PM
While the suit looks to be made of cloth, i think it'll still be high-tech.
maybe it wont appear that way, but it can be.

In real life, there is actually cloth material that can be made to be stab proof (I saw a youtube vid where they explained that they were making stab proof vest for prison guards, so they could be shank proof). knives cant penetrate the cloth, and to some extent, bullets as well.
Although they'd leave a nasty bruise, its still better than nothing.

As for Armor plating that can go over the suit, i think they did a fantastic job in the game DC Universe Online on the intro. Batman has a metal plated cowl (which looks epic) along with armor plated suit.
CorndogBurglar - 5/13/2014, 5:59 PM
I dont get why people are saying this reminds them of Jim Lee. When I look at this its impossible to see anything other than Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns mixed with a little Arkham.

The short ears and emblem are all Frank Miller and the texture and lines along the torso as well as the utility belt are from Arkham.

I've always liked the short ears much better, and Dark Knight Returns is easily my favorite Batsuit of all time. So I'm extremely excited about this!
Kong - 5/13/2014, 6:02 PM
Good write up! I agree. This looks the least restrictive and it looks like he'll be more brutal than ever.
CorndogBurglar - 5/13/2014, 6:03 PM
I also really like how the gloves look like they have some kind of metal studs on the knuckles. It makes him look more brutal. Who would want to take a punch from those things?
CorndogBurglar - 5/13/2014, 6:05 PM
I can honestly say that no other CBM has ever gotten me this excited about the look of a character. They just totally knocked this out of the park.
sikwon - 5/13/2014, 7:33 PM
I can't wait for this movie.
Bearjew - 5/13/2014, 7:43 PM
It's basically just the Dark Knight Returns costume with a slight crease above the nose and brow like Noel. I was hoping they have a new and improved one that he wears in Justice League similar to the Jim Lee new 52 Justice League suit with white polarized lenses but this looks amazing
GoldSlayer1 - 5/13/2014, 8:12 PM
To anyone that says that the suit would lack any real protection, please take a look at this video.

Its Silica and polyethylene Glycol liquid mixed into the cloth,
The video shows that it stops knives and arrows from penetrating the cloth.

So batman could still have a cloth suit for great mobility and agility while still maintaining top notch protection.
MightyZeus - 5/13/2014, 11:08 PM
Good write up. I think the majority of the suit's design came from The Dark Knight Returns. I love the suit and i think the suit looks amazing with all these splices taken from different designs of the Batman suit in comics.
Marxman12 - 5/13/2014, 11:41 PM
I love Nolan's Batman trilogy but I am also very excited to see a more fantastical Batman. Man of Steel had realistic tones and an edge of darkness while incorporating stunning Sci-Fi visuals.
Marxman12 - 5/13/2014, 11:42 PM
Also great editorial KallarkKent.
acheronmagnuz - 5/14/2014, 1:24 AM
Nice review Kallar!
Omega - 5/14/2014, 1:32 AM
New Suit=Batman Dark Knight Returns + Batman Noel(cowl, nose) + Batman New 52(those lines on the costume)
ThrotTheUnclean - 5/14/2014, 4:19 AM
I am by no means a Batfleck sympathizer. I didn't want him to get the role. I wanted either Karl Urban or Josh Brolin. But I hate people bringing up DareDevil in this context because it has no relevance. There are many reasons someone could be weary of him in this role, I just don't think DareDevil is a valid one. There were a lot of things wrong with that movie, but Ben wasn't one of them. I think his costume looked great and his fight scenes were incredible. I loved the Director's cut of DareDevil and Ben was by far the best part of that movie.
FusionForce - 5/14/2014, 4:21 AM
That logo is ugly as [frick], other than that amazing suit.
GL - 5/14/2014, 4:52 AM
I wonder what his boots look like.
Tromills - 5/14/2014, 5:00 AM
Everybody should see the directors cut of Daredevil. it is 100 times better than the cinema release
Zordan - 5/14/2014, 5:18 AM
my guess it half bens muscle half suit... batman is suppose to have armour and muscle and fabric... that is something cant be done on live version, but it seems like they pulled it of... same is with superman check out this abs and suit abs

rsalas - 5/14/2014, 5:46 AM
For this who have read The Dark Knight Returns can clearly see this is Frank Miller influenced. I don't see Jim Lee.
RyKnow - 5/14/2014, 6:00 AM
Nah, the suit sucks in my opinion. Looks terrible. I think they should have gone more the "Arkham Batman" route.
But who really cares, when the film sounds like a terrible idea already; First, let's sideline Superman in his own sequel in favour of Batman - played by an A-list Hollywood superstar, something which Henry Cavill isn't - then let's also include Wonder Woman and Cyborg (so far) just because, well, just because. Then let Zack Snyder not only direct it (he only did a mediocre job at best with Man of Steel), but write it too when he can't write for s**t (Sucker Punch, the only film that he completely wrote himself). The film sounds like a total disaster. But every comic book fan will flock to see his "flawless" film because he made 2 cbm's which were carbon copies of somebody else's work. So you can't say he's a visionary, because he blatantly isn't, he copies other peoples stuff. Oh, and then let him make a Justice League film, which the Man of Steel sequel sounds like.
I really don't care I'm in the minority on this site in thinking this, but in the real world, nobody I know is looking forward to this film, and I'm confident it will be panned by the critics. I mean, check out review scores on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic - his highest rating film was Dawn of the Dead with 75% (Rotten Tomatoes) and 58/100 (metacritic). Even the "infallible" Watchmen only clocked in at 64%.
The 1 saving grace this film has, is that Chris Terrio (Argo) is re-writing the script, but like the old proverb goes, "You can't polish a turd".

That is my independent rant I am completely entitled to, not "Trolling" (God I hate that phrase), all based on my own opinion. And because of the subject matter of the rant, I don't expect, nor care, if nobody agrees with me.

ManDeth - 5/14/2014, 6:41 AM
The suit is nothing new. But the cowl looks like Catman.
KilgoreTrout - 5/14/2014, 6:46 AM
@Kallark Kent Great write up and analysis

Absolutely love it! I think it's the perfect mix of Frank Millers (the cowl) and the Arkham games (the body of the suit). I'm still very curious as to what color the suit is going to be. Just by shading alone in that black and white image it appears the the body of the suit will be gray. This is definitely an epic and awesome change from every other batsuit ever worn on the big screen, minus the Adam West Batman movie. I hope they do the coloring like the Arkham suit where the cowl, cape, and shorts are a dark blues and the gloves, gauntlets and boots are black. I would love to see that on the big screen! I'm curious if they are going to eliminate the briefs from the suit like they did with Superman in Man of Steel. I hope they keep them. I think it would look very cool like that live action Arkham suit pictured above. What do you guys think?
