"Arabian Knights" To Get The 3D Treatment!

This aint your mama's magic carpet ride!
This from Variety:

"Chuck Russell is set to direct a 3D reworking of "Arabian Nights." He co-wrote the script with Barry P. Ambrose. The action adventure, with an estimated budget of $70 million, will be financed by Inferno Entertainment, with production slated to begin in April.

In a new spin on the classic, the story follows a young commander who, after his king is killed in a palace coup, joins forces with Sinbad, Aladdin and his genie to rescue Scheherazade and her kingdom from dark powers."

Sounds like a new take on the old tale. But do we really need another sand lot fairy tale to be told? With a 70 million budget there is a lot that they could do with this movie visually. In fact:

"Through the use of a new generation of visual technologies, we will be able to quite literally take audiences around the world on a magic carpet ride," Russell said.

Chuck Russell is happy that he received a hefty 70 million dollar budget. Who wouldn't be? I am just not sure audiences will be drawn to this type of movie. We already have the much anticipated "Clash of the Titans" (nice Clash of the Titans movie poster find Ror! Man, that guy is fearless)coming out next year and the "Prince of Persia" as well. Russell is really going to have to step it up to get people in the theater seats for this one.

For those of you who will say "This aint in the comic books!!" I say to you "Come on dude!" Arabian Knights has been in the comics since before you were tossed out upon this world!!! Below is proof.

If the red head makes the final cut I will be in the theater opening night to see that raw beauty!

That sounds like he's only vaguely heard of the Arabian nights. Ug I hope this idea gets stuck in development hell.

gtrman, how could you have never heard of "Arabian Nights?" Its a famous book. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Book_of_One_Thousand_and_One_Nights for more info.

Interesting. I always thought they should do something modern with this. Some of the worlds greatest tales came from the Thousand and One Nights.

You know what's strange is that in the distant past Arabian Nights was reckoned as a kid's book. But I didn't read it till I was in my 20's lol

Got to love public education. Got to love it!

Yeah it does deserve a movie...but this is just a really bad bastardization of it...the tales exist as singular entities not members of an Arabian justice league. It's a story about storytelling, it's not an action epic.

@necrosage2005
I followed the Wiki link and read up a bit. It sounds interesting, but not something I would think could be a film, like there's a whole lot going on there. I'm going to look into it a bit more and educate myself further, thanks for the push good sir.

@ grtman: If you have ever seen adaptations of or read stories about Alladin, Ali Baba & the 40 thieves, or Sinbad then you already have experienced some of the highlights.
But your right it is huge.

DarthMulder - 11/5/2009, 9:55 AM
it's huge indeed, it's a really great frame narrative like the turn of the screw. The frame narrative, or story within a story aspect, is what makes it truly great. Unfortunately that seems to be something this proposed movie is lacking. The characters are elements of one long narrative not people who can meet up and form a super group. I guess it's artistic license but it just seems wrong to me.

gtrman, no prob. Glad I could help. Just hope that they do it well and it doesn't suck or have no or almost no budget.
