TMNT Goes Back To Its Roots

Instead of staying with the successful CGI format, TMNT is going back to live action.
IGN is reporting that the studio that owns the TMNT property, Mirage Group, is putting the live action project on the fast track for development. Rumor is it will be a origins story of our favorite pizza eating, sewer skate boarding, foot battling turtles.

The good news is that Galen Walker, who produced the 2007 CGI big screen TMNT is onboard, at least they are keeping one element of success from the CGI TMNT film. Galen also produced 300. Mix the two elements together and you've got a live action hit.

Galen states: "The original dozen comics created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman are some of the best source material one could hope for."
Which is true, regarding all comics of the last 50 or so years. The CGI film I don't know just had that professional feel to it. It was how we wanted to see our turtle heroes on the big screen. A live action film would rock but only if it was done right. Hopefully the studio hits a home run. If this live action movie fails TMNT needs to go back to a CGI format.

Galen added further details stating that the film will remain true to the spirit of the original comics, and may use sinister sounding "face replacement technology", which allow's the turtles to be much more expressive and real.

The movie is scheduled for a 2011 release. This will be the fourth live-action film to star our pizza eating Heroes in a Half Shell, with their first movie hitting theaters all the way back in 1990.

Awesome! loved the original live action movies when I was a kid. Should be really crazy with all the new technology thats come out since then. I'll be seeing this when it arrives.
VenomIsOnMyRibs - 4/23/2009, 8:08 AM
I think the only one i really enjoyed was the first one. I can go back even now, watch it and keep it on without shutting it off. I doubt this new movie will be half as successful as the others. But who knows.
WisconsinCharm - 4/23/2009, 8:08 AM
HELLS YEAH SON! HELLS YEAH! I love those turtles!
LastSon1027 - 4/23/2009, 8:15 AM
Not a good idea they should stick to what made them popular
Supermike - 4/23/2009, 8:18 AM
I am always ok with more Turtles. I had one of the original graphic novels when I was a kid and it kicked tons of ass. Very dark and mean. Also, they all wore red bandanas. It'd be nice if they make reference to that at some point.
ItsNotASchooner - 4/23/2009, 8:20 AM
I liked the first movie..although its been years since i saw it. And i enjoyed the cgi one too. But why another [frick]ing reboot? We have to sit through the mutation, Splinter, Shredder, Meeting April Oneil, all that shit again! Man there are so many great stories in those comics..lets have Rat King or Leatherhead or even bring in the sci fi stuff
Rorschach01 - 4/23/2009, 8:21 AM
@Supermike: So you're saying it should be an animated cartoon? Because that's what made them popular. And after that, was the live action movie, so is that what you're talking about?

I enjoyed the live action (as cheesy as it was). I am looking forward to this. Hopefully they don't follow the recent trend and try to make it a darker film. Keep with what works, keep it mostly light hearted, with a ton of action and some great stunts and fighting.
dizzle716 - 4/23/2009, 8:26 AM
hell yes is right tmnt was good but live action is where its at
tyko450 - 4/23/2009, 8:27 AM
wow there rebooting the turtles:( well its proof i am officialy old :*(

i was in middle school when the first one came out
loganaspatch - 4/23/2009, 8:27 AM
Loganaspatch, I was in elementary when it came out, so don't feel too bad.

I'm tired of this reboot crap. Not everything needs it. I really enjoyed the CGI movie, and hoped they'd stick with it. Like Rorschach01 said, I don't want to sit through another origin explanation about how they became who they are and meeting their allies and all.
Stumblin - 4/23/2009, 8:39 AM
I loved the first film, not so much the second and third. The first one had that dark feeling the comics had while still making it family friendly for the most part. The original comics were actually very violent and wouldn't be suggested for children. I also hope they make the turtles more like actual ninjas instead of just kinda showing up and fighting and not sneaking around. Some of those cartoon characters were pretty rad though, Beebop and Rocksteady FTW!
skylarscar - 4/23/2009, 8:43 AM
@stumblin.. If it was a cartoon in the 80's & early 90's... It's going to get a Movie...

Lets see... What's left???

Duck Tales
Smurfs
Thundercats <--- Heard it might be in the works
Tales Spin
He-Man

Off Top of my head... I'm sure there are many, many more...
Pumchavas28 - 4/23/2009, 8:44 AM
@ everyone calling it a reboot (Rorschach01, loganaspatch, and Stumblin) it doesn't say anything about a reboot, it says its an "origins story" aka prequal kinda like wolverine. Also I think its about time they went back to live action, I for one couldn't stand the CGI I thought it was an insult 2 my childhood memories I loved the original live action movies.
coqui1983 - 4/23/2009, 8:45 AM
Coqui1983... The same thing could be said about the 2nd & 3rd movies...

Those 2 were awful... The 1st was "Radical" ;)
Pumchavas28 - 4/23/2009, 8:50 AM
@ coqui. I hate when people say something different from what they remember, it somehow becomes a personal insult. It was different, so what. It was succesful. It had great character development, especially for a children's movie. Great action. One couldn't ask for more.

I grew up watching the original TMNT movies. I had bedsheets and everything. I was about 3 or 4 when I saw the first one, and I've loved them ever since. When I heard about the CG film, I was thrilled.

As much as I loved the CG movie. I would love to see them in live action again. With all the technology we have today, we could expect some of the best animatronics mixed w/ a few CG elements probably ever.

I'm stoked ^_^
SGA - 4/23/2009, 8:51 AM
@Superdud

Comics?
Smolo - 4/23/2009, 8:51 AM
@ Rorschach01 and Stumblin, I know what you mean about not wanting to see the origin story again, but personally it would be nice to see a truly faithful interpretation of the comics with today's technology to avoid some of the awkward moments of the first film, like seeing splinter's puppeteer or the actor's faces when the ninja turtles opened their mouths too wide. That being said I'm sure the translation to film would not be as direct as I'd like, the franchise is nearly entirely youth directed and people like me who want to see them as something more than zany dorks who run in the front door instead of sneaking in undetected are stuck just having to enjoy whatever we're given.
skylarscar - 4/23/2009, 8:53 AM
@SGA "I hate when people say something different from what they remember, it somehow becomes a personal insult." Huh? Lol can u pls clearify?
coqui1983 - 4/23/2009, 8:59 AM
I was in 2nd grade when the first film came out. That was a pretty dark movie for its time.
DarkAvengers - 4/23/2009, 9:03 AM
I have the original comics. Bought them when they first came out and I was in High School. I'm getting old.

Would be cool to have Corey Feldman back in the mix.
SirPrize - 4/23/2009, 9:03 AM
What I mean is. When people don't like a new version of a movie, such as the CGI TMNT, just because it's different then what they remember, and they take it as a personal insult from the company...like you did. It really bugs the crap out of me.

I understand a love for movies, and the original material, but just because it's different is no reason to hate it.

That's just narrow minded.

There are things more important in life than a studio making a movie that is based on the same material, but is different than you remember. Especially when the new movie becomes a hit for a new generation to enjoy it too.
SGA - 4/23/2009, 9:07 AM
They should continue with the story line they all ready established, not go back and do a redo. Look out going Down.
Spock - 4/23/2009, 9:15 AM
BAXTER STOCKMAN! if theyre doing darker, live action work than thats what i wanna see

1=shredder
2-baxter stockman
3-krang

treat it like the original star wars trilogy. throw in bebop and rocksteady as an r2-d2 c3-po team up, but evil!
dellamorte1872 - 4/23/2009, 9:21 AM
I LOVED the original 1990 film (didn't care for 2&3), LOVED the CGI film, and HELLA loved the B&W comics from back in the day! All Red Bandanas! HELL YEAH! I wanna see some kick @$$ live-action Martial Arts Fights! (PLEASE NO WIRE MATRIX-CROUCHING TIGER STUFF! IT'S NOT NECESSARY!)

I hope they go Dark "PG-13ish" for the Martial Arts Violence to be EXTREME! I'm ready to see my Turtle Homies lay the BEAT DOWN on some Foot Ninjas, again! STREET FIGHT! NO HOLDS BARRED! woot woot! :)
SpiderMan209 - 4/23/2009, 9:22 AM
Cant wait for the "April O'niel " thread!!! I loved the "Old Man River " books! My first thought of April is Jessica Biel.
shibazz - 4/23/2009, 9:25 AM
You know, I got that movie, the CGI version, for christmas, but I don't think I've seen it yet. I'll have to go and watch it now...

Jetsaholic - 4/23/2009, 9:28 AM
@SGA its called an opinion (might wanna look it up) and no where did I say that the reason I didn't like it was because that's not what I "remember" I just simply didn't like the look or feel/tone of the movie that's it, it could've been a cartoon for all I care. So if my OPINION "bugs the crap out of u" then I'm sry but like I said that's MY personal opinion and also never did I say "hate" so pls don't put words in my mouth
coqui1983 - 4/23/2009, 9:32 AM
The CGI one sucked. What was up with the bad guys? Monsters? Really? For a movie franchise that proved that it could work in a real universe so well, that movie ruined everything. I didn't even mind the "going back in time" element in the third live-action movie. At least they weren't going into space and fighting aliens.

An origins movie is exactly what the turtles need to make up for that CGI travesty.

And why were they more like frogs than turtles? Anyone?
bobbyjones6969 - 4/23/2009, 9:38 AM

I can understand you having an opinion, but man, people these days are so drastic.

and you said you don't like it because it's what you don't remember when you said "I for one couldn't stand the CGI I thought it was an insult 2 my childhood memories"

and I'm not putting words in your mouth...it's called inference.
SGA - 4/23/2009, 9:38 AM
I would say it was on par with Star Wars: Clone Wars. An insult to the real thing. A cheap knock-off that should have been for television and not for the big screen.
bobbyjones6969 - 4/23/2009, 9:41 AM
listen to HORSE the Band's "Pizza" EP.

.......they do a great TMNT cover.
Keven - 4/23/2009, 9:42 AM
@bobbyjones6969 I agree with u, finally someone who sees what I see
coqui1983 - 4/23/2009, 9:43 AM
@SHIBAZZ - Good call!!! Biel would make a great April O'Neil!!!

I can't wait for a darker reboot of TMNT!!! That's how it was supposed to be. I loved (still love) the old live-action movies, but they weren't as dark as the comics.....this is great news!
Talontd - 4/23/2009, 9:46 AM
Quick question! Did everyone else get the muchies for pizza at the beggining of the first turtles movie? Or was that just me? Lol
coqui1983 - 4/23/2009, 9:49 AM
Cool Dude!!!! Cowabunga! : D ... Good news though don't need a ORIGINS??? Just carry it on!!! Make it as good or even a little darker than the original, an you got a winner!!!! CASEY JONES was my favorite thing about TMNT!!! Hope the new ones just as good, hell, i hope JONES is it it lol! Man couple of years time = CASEY JONES Spin off movie!!! Heh heh, i really don't know why they hav'nt already done one???? As for the CGI movie, it was alright but wasn't all that at all, infact is was a lil lame, damn it took me 3 times to just watch it all the way through! No, you can't beat LIVE ACTION! ; ) Me too @ COQUI1983 @ Lol.
LEEE777 - 4/23/2009, 10:12 AM
Trust me coqui1983 its a reboot. The Turtles origins are that they fall into ooze and mutate, get trained by Splinter and become ninjas. We have seen it already! They should just begin this one with them already knowing April and Casey Jones and all that..and just have Shredder team up with Rat King or Something. I wont mind if they take it a different direction and have it darker like the original comics..but if its the same old shit weve seen before then whats the point? The cgi movie already got todays kids interested (i think, or did it kinda bomb?), either way kids know who the Turtles are..so give us something we havnt seen!
Rorschach01 - 4/23/2009, 10:23 AM
lmao.... TMNT's "origins" are in a very good comic about Ninjas who also happened to be mutated turtles. It had loads of highly violent martial arts action, terrific art, and great stories.

The tv show and movies were nothing like them at all.
Juggernaut - 4/23/2009, 10:25 AM
This just put a smile on my face.
CRUSH - 4/23/2009, 10:31 AM
@bobbyjones6969 That is a great comparison dude between SW:CLONE WARS and the "modern" cgi look the turtles tried
dellamorte1872 - 4/23/2009, 10:40 AM
@Rorschach01 your right we did see it but that was just a flash back tho, wasn't really part of the movie, now I'm not saying it aint a reboot (still could be) but from what Is said in the article it seems like its just a prequal kinda like they did with star wars.
coqui1983 - 4/23/2009, 10:42 AM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was Reading this, yet the only thing I could think of is, whatever happen to them doing a reboot of Highlander, they were even making a game.
Yohon Kalic - 4/23/2009, 10:48 AM
An origin story? Aww c'mon they can do better than that... whatever happened with TMNT's ending where Karai mentioned an enemy returning from the Turtles' past? I want to see the return of the Shredder, not a revamped retelling of their origins... we know all that already :(
Slayer420 - 4/23/2009, 10:51 AM
Hmmmm??? Why don't they just make CASEY JONES movie????? : D Agree with you @ RORSCH @ SLAYER @ Something different, everyone knows the TURTLES now!
LEEE777 - 4/23/2009, 11:00 AM
so coqui1983 how can they prequal the turtles?, unless theyre going to get into where the "ooze" came from and the origins of the sewer system .. what im saying there is no mystery to the turtles origins, i dont know how u can relate this to star wars 0_o
maybe you should retract what you said up there, either im overly payin attention to what you say or im just not smart enough to get what your saying
"@ everyone calling it a reboot (Rorschach01, loganaspatch, and Stumblin) it doesn't say anything about a reboot, it says its an "origins story" aka prequal kinda like wolverine"
and then you say
"now I'm not saying it aint a reboot (still could be) but from what Is said in the article it seems like its just a prequal kinda like they did with star wars."
.. do you dare call wolverines origins a preequal?..a preequal to the xmen? becase thats not what fox had in mind... or did they? :)
loganaspatch - 4/23/2009, 11:09 AM
Damn u yohon lol that does look good, been wanting 2 order that "mmmmmmmmm pizzaaaaaaa"
coqui1983 - 4/23/2009, 11:15 AM
FINALLY, GAWD I HATE WAITING FOR PEOPLE TO FINALLY "GET IT RIGHT"
GUNSMITH - 4/23/2009, 11:17 AM
@loganaspatch wow you've totally twisted everything up lol I'm totaly dizzy and like "huh?/wtf?" lol I said its KINDA like wolverine (as in the "origins sense" and as much as hollywood been ruining older movies/comic based movies I wouldn't be surprised if they did, also I never agreed that they should do a prequal/"origins" film just simply stating that the article never mentioned it being a reboot that's all........ PIZZA!!!!
coqui1983 - 4/23/2009, 11:20 AM
I have been a fan of the TMNT for as long as i can remember and have seen all the turtle movies when they came out...and I for one am happy as f@(k!!... about this news...honestly this is the best news I've heard this year for movies...I don't know why all of you are dissin' the new cgi movie...I thought it was great!!..when Leo popped up in the jungle, it sent goosebumps down my spine...and when ralph finally beat the shit out of Leo that was great film making...I see nothing wrong with the cgi film...I love the old trilogy just as much as the next person, but with creature films like hellboy I'm really looking forward to see a re-boot...so much would be better then the 90's films...
rottencotten - 4/23/2009, 11:53 AM
Kill it
Sonny - 4/23/2009, 12:01 PM
Actually, I have some of the original books of TMNT. And I have one where it was them still training, if they go that route it would be sweet!
They didn't have the same weapons either, and their bandannas actually covered their whole head and not just the eyes. Hell Michelangelo ended up strangling a ninja to death in a fountain, it was awesome!
So yeah, if they do that I could see it working, I wish they'd steer closer to the books then the shows. Don't get me wrong, I loved the shows, well the early 90's cartoon anyway.
Now with the past CGI movie, at first yes, I was sort of meh about the character designs, mostly the people designs, but then after watching it, it grew on me quick and the action scenes were phenomenal! And the attention to detail in the environments and choreographs were really impressive. I wouldn't say this is an insult to the childhood memories, I think that's just being a tad bit melodramatic.
Stumblin - 4/23/2009, 12:08 PM
I want to see Rat King, Baxter Stockman, Krang, Leatherhead and Yojibo Usagi!
icebergslick - 4/23/2009, 12:08 PM
I thought all the turtle movies were good except for the third I mean they at least could have put in the samurai rabbit. But I am really glad to see they are making another live action cause they were hands down the best. Maybe we can get Vanilla Ice to reprise his role. NINJA, NINJA RAP!
LastSon1027 - 4/23/2009, 12:09 PM
bobbyjones: "At least they weren't going into space and fighting aliens."
You do realize that was one of the major storylines from the original Eastman and Laird comics, right?
mwmcintyre - 4/23/2009, 12:15 PM
With the way hollywood is doing things these days I have a feeling all us diehard fans will be forgotten about, they will most likely be all family friendly, feel good movie. Which means "darker" and any hopes of them going with the grittier comics is most likely out of the question. I hope they do make it just a bit darker tho, haven't read the comics but they sound awesome
coqui1983 - 4/23/2009, 12:21 PM
Cowabunga!!! I was disappointed that the last one wasn't live action. It was a fun movie, just not what I wanted. I hope they go a traditional route with Shredder and the Foot, and then throw in Bebop and Rocksteady to shake it up. Baxter Stockman and his Mouser army would be better suited for a sequel.
TheMyth - 4/23/2009, 12:23 PM
Everything these days is PG13 or less and not the good PG13 either, they just want money they don't care about you, him, her, me, anyone. So they gonna do what's in their best interest which is make a cutesy movie that everyone from grandma to grandchild could go see. *sigh*
coqui1983 - 4/23/2009, 12:25 PM
They are definitely gonna go kid friendly with this they can't miss out on the merchandising and toy money coming from all of this.
LastSon1027 - 4/23/2009, 12:38 PM
Lol, I think it goes without asking that of course they are going the PG-13 route.
TheMyth - 4/23/2009, 12:48 PM
I would like to see one show, movie, etc. that takes place when there not teenagers. I want to see them in there upper 20's. I think it'll be nice to see how the ninga master's turn out in a decade. Plus I want people to know there alive. [frick] the sewer. Some how the world finds out that the turtles exist. I'll see that movie.
Crusader - 4/23/2009, 12:58 PM
I am thrilled for another live-action TMNT film. The current trend of comic-based movies in my opinion is not specifically geared towards younger audiences i.e. Dark Knight, IronMan, Watchmen, Hulk, etc. These films I feel have extremely dark messages, themes, and action that older generations appreciate, while younger viewers can simply enjoy the aesthetics at the same time. The previous TMNT films became campier with 2/3, but first movie was definitely not meant for my, at the time, 4 year old self. I don't feel we will be left out with next movie like I did with the CGI version.
The decision to move back to live action could not make me happier. I agree with BobbyJones analogy; The CGI adaptation did mimic Clone Wars in its absurdity. (Personally everytime Anakin gets called "Sky Guy" I need a shot of Jack to heal my broken heart) Though maybe visually appealing and having entertaining sequences, the ideas should've been left in the boardroom.
I also agree with Coqui about the "origins" story. I don't need a Wolverine orgin movie to show me his Weapon X development, or rivalry with Sabertooth. I know these things. I'm just stoked to see Gambit, Deadpool, and Hugh Jackman again being a bad ass instead of a broadway douche. So if I get to see some nice effects, with awesome costumes (Splinter!), legitimate fight/action sequences, and non-cheesey story reminiscent of the first live film I am set.
Plus some Casey Jones and the Shredder don't hurt.
But not too much too hope for right?
Oh dellamorte, Beepop and Rocksteady as a C-3PO/R2D2 tandem would be amazing. How amzing could they look/ their origin story be!
Dub0ner - 4/23/2009, 1:13 PM
I'm sure a live action version will be cool, but I think they should have stuck with the CGI. You know there's going to be CGI in a live action TMNT movie anyway.
BmanHall - 4/23/2009, 1:24 PM
@Dub0ner tuche sir I agree good examples and @Crusader good idea but I'm not sure that would work so well since the first T in TMNT stands for TEENAGE lol not really affective there but I do like your idea none the less.
coqui1983 - 4/23/2009, 1:28 PM
sry but this is really reallly old news
joob234 - 4/23/2009, 2:00 PM
hopefully they stay with all of them wearing red bandanas. That will definitely stay true to the roots.
fivebees - 4/23/2009, 2:35 PM
awesome. cannot wait. no spots on the turtles please. is this a reboot? or a prequel? 2011 will be insane. soo many movies.
grif - 4/23/2009, 3:00 PM
i agree with fivebees if the want to stay true to the roots have them wear red bandanas and make it a little more violent
DonkeyPuncher - 4/23/2009, 3:55 PM
As long as it has a dark story, which the first one had.
Will be looking forward to it..
Minotauro - 4/23/2009, 4:35 PM
hmmmm........I am not sure if i like this "New " Grif.
shibazz - 4/23/2009, 4:58 PM
i hope they put in the darker elements from the comics the first movie did really well on that and the second pulled away and made it more like the cartoon, and the third just had a bad storyline.
It would be nice if they made this just like the comics where the whole race that krang is captures splinter not shredder leading into the second movie where they step into a portal that warps them to another planet, pulling away from shredder being the main villain like the 80's toon made him out to be.
Osiris - 4/23/2009, 5:18 PM
Ive had face replacement. Now i look like Anne Heche. Which was a mistake. I was trying to look like micheal jackson, but he'd copyrighted his own face and insured it for several million dollars. Just like Jlo's ass, but i bought that ass!
Betty - 4/23/2009, 5:18 PM
F yeah the CGI stuff was cool but I think it didn't do justice for the Turtles come back. Cant wait to see what direction they will take it.
HR - 4/23/2009, 5:21 PM
are they going to dance again? you know, vanilla ice style choreo...i hope it can be less kid oriented
parascythe - 4/23/2009, 7:30 PM
WOOOOHOO! Thats awesome. I love the old live action movies, their cheesy, and aged terribly...but they were very entertaining back than.
I cant wait for a Reboot.
Aiiwolf - 4/23/2009, 8:19 PM
Meh, I was hoping for another CGI one....... But hey I'm glad they are back on the big screen :D
Go Raph!!!!!!! My favorite ^__^
007440 - 4/23/2009, 8:28 PM
Kinda dissapointed they're not doin a CG one but i still luv mah turtles. their final battle with shredder better be big and not uneventful like in the first two (those movies are still great though)
sketchmasterskillz - 4/23/2009, 11:36 PM
the original live action tmnt is one of the best comic book movies ever. it was for the most part in sync with the original comics, and it was DARK yet paired with comical relief and the the balance between the 2 was flawless. if they want a successful live action movie, mirror the original and just tweak it up a tad to keep up with modern day filming.
HopOff718 - 4/23/2009, 11:45 PM
This i cant wait for and again ill be going back to the cinema to watch it as a true turtles fan ive seen all the films at the cinema including the latest CGI one and i have all the turtles comics right back to issue No.1 woooo hooo cant wait...COWABUNGA DUDES!!!!!
First of all, the first TMNT is one of THE BEST comic book movies EVER and in mt top 10 movie of all time. It had a lot of humor, but it was also dark, especially compared to the other 2 movies.
What ever anyone thinks of the movies, i have but one request, can we please stop using the word "reboot" for EVERYTHING??? As much as i loved the first flick, its 20 years old. Its a no brainer that the studio is gonna target an audience that mostly wasn't alive when the first movie came out, so an origin story makes sense. Hulk after 5 years, thats a reboot. Batman after 8 years, thats a reboot. Star Trek is kind of a "preboot"... lol... But another live action TMNT movie after 15 or 20 years is just an update. New creative team, new actors and fewer technological limitations. What, you gonna have the turtles be teenagers in 1990 and 2011 in the same continuity...? Really...?
PS... Superman should have been updated!
Also, the CGI one was so so, thats it. It was kinda hard to get into because of the character design, though. The turtles and monsters looked awesome, but the human characters were kinda creepy. They went for the 3D anime look and everyone just wound up looking like aliens...
well they did try to do eastmen & lords vershion there darker and very violent. And that was the problem with them not that i diden't like 2&3,but wen the first on came out a stupid parent's groud was bitch it was to violent so thats what happend with 2 and 3 it became more kid frendly.And when the 3rd on came out it was total power rangers. I think they should do it in cgi cartoon they could do so much more and i think it looked better. But if they want to go back to live action and make it like the first movie im all for it. I'll see any vershion. It will be awsome to see the green foursum on the screen in any form live action or cgi cartoon.
GO GREEN MACHEAIN!!!!! ;)
@ mwmcintyre
Yeah, man! I didn't think anyone else was going to get that...
I was trying to think of an example of something that wouldn't work in the real universe... Something on par with the monster storyline they chose for TMNT. That was what I came up with. Hope they don't try to do anything like that.
