The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

peter jackson is about the greatest epic director living today, his casting and work load alone plces him on the boarders of madness but out of it comes these epics visualy stunning in reality works of art.
i know critics moaned and tolkien purists cried but as for its ability to make movie fans want to go forth and read these epic tales for them selves places him higher tham all other directors.
i for one am glad to have seen the first trilogy and eagerly await the hobbit.

@BmanHall - I agree. Loved Avengers, loved seeing something I had waited decades to see become realized so well. The Hobbit, though, is the very first novel I ever read, and introduced me to so many things that thirty years later still resonate frequently in my life. Jackson knocked LotR out of the park (which were the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th novels I ever read) so knowing he shepparded this movie (after deciding not to, but realizing the only other person he trusted the property with couldn't) makes me know I will be loving it.

This movie is so special. Sorry if that sounds lame but it Peter Jackson really has done a great job of making us fans feel a part of the team, able to follow along with everyone with these videos. I love LOTR, have read so many books (Silmarillion, LOTR trilogy, Hobbit, Children of Hurin) and can't wait to see it unfold in December.

This movie may very well be the highest grossing movie of all time come December. I agree with you guys above...I was looking forward to the Avengers but it pales in comparison to this. Tolkien's work is one of my most beloved hobbies. Can't wait to see this come to life!
