"He's feeling lost, vulnerable, defeated, emotionally drained and hurt, and here is Yondu in this light coming down and brings him up into the spacecraft and takes him away," Michael Rooker told USA Today about how his blue-hued character first encounters Peter Quill (Chris Pratt). "It might have been pretty horrific, but also a bit cool." As Quill's surrogate father figure, Yondu raises him alongside his Ravengers, "an outer-space biker gang of sorts usually up to no good," reports USA Today. Yondu has "some interesting issues — not a good guy, not a bad guy. There's hope and there's a heart inside Yondu," Rooker says. "It's not so black and white — I should say blue and white. And I enjoy roles that are like that, even if they're not in some galaxy somewhere other than ours." Though Rooker's Yondu doesn't have the tall trademark red fin, he does have a mohawk and will be equipped with the character's whistle-controlled arrow from the comics. Michael Rooker also reveals he grew his nails out for the part, which James Gunn wrote for him. "They're not so long and pointy that they're like demon things, and yet they're not so manicured like a regular human guy." There are some heavy spoilers in the source link that accompanied the following Guardians of the Galaxy stills, so head over to USA Today with caution.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014

Cha-Cha-Cha-Cha-Cha-Cha-Cherry Bomb!
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 7/8/2014, 8:19 PM
Movie is going to kick ass. But I do wish Yondu had a ridiculously exuberant red mohawk instead of a metal slab stabbed into his head.

blackandyellow - 7/8/2014, 8:22 PM
That look of disgust is from reading the comments on CBM.

Not impressed with his design at all. Not liking the metallic fin either. Him and Gamora's makeup design seem so lazily distinguishable.

I see a freak of green,
red jackets too.
I see them in disgust,
for me and you.
And I think to myself,
what a wonderful world.

I see of a Yondu of blue,
And lights of white.
The bright blessed day,
The dark sacred night.
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world.
AlexanderLykins - 7/8/2014, 8:32 PM
Looks like he's got a fake grill in that second picture.
MrBlackjack - 7/8/2014, 8:33 PM
^^^That's the best you're gonna get from me CBM
Maven - 7/8/2014, 8:35 PM
Wait - are Yondu's Ravengers the fleet that the Milano leads on the Xandar (attack) scenes? Thought he was working with Ronan.
Phronesis - 7/8/2014, 8:38 PM
Glad he still has the whistle controlled arrows.
String - 7/8/2014, 8:39 PM
Still wish there was a little more fin on the top of his head. Been reading Guardians since the original team and THAT is Yondu's distinguisble trait. It didn't have to be 3 feet high but surely with special effects like Rocket and Groot -CG could had enhanced a more pronounced fin without effecting actor performance. Still not accepting this as Yondu from the comics but an ancestor since Yondu of the original Guardians is a future character.
DestroyallTrolls - 7/8/2014, 8:39 PM
@blackandyellow
hahahahaha
It's funny cause it's true.

Looks like he's smelling something. I think he smells success.
Superior - 7/8/2014, 8:45 PM
This may be the shittiest shit you've ever read, but I'd think it'd fit the whole comedy aspect of the film while paying source to the comics:

There's this one scene I can imagine where Yondu is talking to them about his years as a Guardian of the Galaxy and then he tells a story about him fighting some aliens or stuff like that and, in the process, gets his fin on his head chopped off, and that's why he has that big ass metal brick on his head.
LensmanMatt92 - 7/8/2014, 8:46 PM
Eh, i don't really like his design. He doesn't even have a bow.
ComicsBornAndBred - 7/8/2014, 8:47 PM
Nice!!!! Yondu look boss
LensmanMatt92 - 7/8/2014, 8:47 PM
He looks like he has a chocolate bar on his head.
ComicsBornAndBred - 7/8/2014, 8:47 PM
THis movie has all the makings of a billion dollar success like Avengers but idk if it will actually make it
ComicsBornAndBred - 7/8/2014, 8:48 PM
Mohawk looks like fudge growing out of his head haha
MrCamw1 - 7/8/2014, 8:52 PM
@Superior That's not such a shitty idea, sounds solid to me.
BasedThanos - 7/8/2014, 8:55 PM
Don't quite understand the lack of the fin. They could have scaled it down and made it red. Don't like the flat metal looking mohawk.
AlexanderLykins - 7/8/2014, 8:58 PM
Something must have happened to him. The skin around the metal is weird.

In related news, I'm watching A Bug's Life on Disney Channel and they played a Guardians of the Galaxy behind-the-scenes visit. It has a fair amount of new footage including a few more shots of Quill as a child and more Rocket.
MileHighRonin - 7/8/2014, 9:03 PM
If he is an anti hero, than I am cool with that. If he is a villian than I Will be upset. He is an original Guardian!

I AM GROOT!!!
AlexanderLykins - 7/8/2014, 9:04 PM
Can't wait to see this movie. My most hyped movie since Marvel's The Avengers. Looks like I'm going to be having a blast in the theater!

i actually havent seen Rooker in much but i hear he is a very good actor..never watched walking dead(im not a zombie guy) but he seems to fit the characterization they seem to have for the MCU version of Yondu..im interested in how his relationship with Star Lord will be since he is suppose to be his father figure..him being an anti hero is interesting and a leader of a"outer space biker gang" is interesting too..also the aliens in the background look awesome too..i truly hope guardians delivers!!
Joe6Pack74 - 7/8/2014, 9:16 PM
Some days are awesome, then some days you goto Twisted Kilt and get a drink spilled on you by a waitress. Those days are super awesome.
sicknimon - 7/8/2014, 9:20 PM
Oh Merl
Pedrito - 7/8/2014, 9:23 PM
I don't really care for the large fin. I guess I can't really picture it on him.

People were complaining about the Abomination lack of ears before TIH and they quickly forgot they were missing once the movie came out.
TheActionAce - 7/8/2014, 9:23 PM
His fin was probably chopped off, if he ever encountered Thanos or some other big time villain

or could be cool if it pops out when in battle mode, hey I am still hoping to see or have a mention of it in the film
DeusExSponge - 7/8/2014, 9:25 PM
I think he looks fine, maybe he's just very old now and lost his flare. If that's the case, I hope we get to see him in all his 3 feet mo-hawk glory.
cld247 - 7/8/2014, 9:28 PM
Damn he looks [frick]ing badass! With those red eyes... "Hell Yeah"! I can't wait!
