Will James Gunn Be Taking Over For Joss Whedon On THE AVENGERS 3?

Recent rumors claim Joss Whedon may not helm the unannounced sequel to Avengers: Age of Ultron, while a recent interview with James Gunn suggests that he could have the job. Check it out!

Could Joss Whedon be leaving The Avengers franchise after next year's Age of Ultron? At this point, it's only a rumor, but Badass Digest's Devin Faraci is reporting that there have been "rumblings behind-the-scenes." If it is true, however, who would Marvel Studios trust to take over its most profitable franchise? Well, in anticipation of Guardians of the Galaxy, Faraci spoke with director James Gunn and producer Kevin Feige this weekend, and got an interesting response from both  when he asked how far along were negotiations for the former filmmaker to direct The Avengers 3.

I have seen James Gunn in social settings and in press settings, and at this moment I saw James Gunn in one way I had never before seen him: speechless. He kind of sat there gobsmacked for a second. And then he said, "It was great seeing you!" as our interview time was up. The next day I talked to Kevin Feige, and I straight up asked him: will James Gunn direct Avengers 3? Feige denied it. That leaves me with one no comment and one denial.

Before James Gunn responsed so unusually, the writer/director had told Devin Faraci that he would love to direct the potential sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy, which has so far been well-recieved, but his "contract just says another Marvel film; it doesn't specify." Regardless, Joss Whedon not directing Avengers 3 is still very much a rumor, and there is even some evidence to prove that rumor false. For instance, James Gunn told reporters last week that he and the Age of Ultron director had to work together to cast (Josh Brolin as) Thanos because the Mad Titan is going appear in "stuff that I do, as well as stuff Joss does." Not mention, Whedon has boasted saving Thanos for the grand finale and that will more than likely be The Avengers 3, which could already have a May 3, 2019 release date. So, perhaps the two filmmakers could co-direct? What do you think?
