Will James Gunn Be Taking Over For Joss Whedon On THE AVENGERS 3?

Recent rumors claim Joss Whedon may not helm the unannounced sequel to Avengers: Age of Ultron, while a recent interview with James Gunn suggests that he could have the job. Check it out!

Could Joss Whedon be leaving The Avengers franchise after next year's Age of Ultron? At this point, it's only a rumor, but Badass Digest's Devin Faraci is reporting that there have been "rumblings behind-the-scenes." If it is true, however, who would Marvel Studios trust to take over its most profitable franchise? Well, in anticipation of Guardians of the Galaxy, Faraci spoke with director James Gunn and producer Kevin Feige this weekend, and got an interesting response from both  when he asked how far along were negotiations for the former filmmaker to direct The Avengers 3.

I have seen James Gunn in social settings and in press settings, and at this moment I saw James Gunn in one way I had never before seen him: speechless. He kind of sat there gobsmacked for a second. And then he said, "It was great seeing you!" as our interview time was up. The next day I talked to Kevin Feige, and I straight up asked him: will James Gunn direct Avengers 3? Feige denied it. That leaves me with one no comment and one denial.

Before James Gunn responsed so unusually, the writer/director had told Devin Faraci that he would love to direct the potential sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy, which has so far been well-recieved, but his "contract just says another Marvel film; it doesn't specify." Regardless, Joss Whedon not directing Avengers 3 is still very much a rumor, and there is even some evidence to prove that rumor false. For instance, James Gunn told reporters last week that he and the Age of Ultron director had to work together to cast (Josh Brolin as) Thanos because the Mad Titan is going appear in "stuff that I do, as well as stuff Joss does." Not mention, Whedon has boasted saving Thanos for the grand finale and that will more than likely be The Avengers 3, which could already have a May 3, 2019 release date. So, perhaps the two filmmakers could co-direct? What do you think?

Not gonna happen.
Gunn didn't answer because that's a questions that leaves you like "what? Where do you get that from"

Whedon has done too much for The Avengers and Gunn only makes movie he's very passionate about

@Bekss There's been lots of talk of Age of Ultron being the last DIRECTED film that Whedon works on.
ALmazing - 7/21/2014, 11:25 AM
Avengers is Joss' baby, nuff said.
sKeemAn - 7/21/2014, 11:25 AM
I want Whedon. This has been Joss's baby from jump. Convince that man to do the third one Feige.

If not Gunn will do.

@jollem BUT I THOUGHT HE WAS DEAD

@Reasonnnn

Even if Whedon leaves there's no reason for Gunn to make Avengers 3. He did Guardins because he already liked the comics and is the kind of weird movie he does, Avengers is not
JordanKing - 7/21/2014, 11:29 AM
This is not a good idea. Avengers is a whole different beast to Guardians. Especially for the third film.
thebearjew - 7/21/2014, 11:29 AM
maybe hell produce it but I doubt hell direct it
I think the guardians will meet avengers in avengers 3

@Bekss He's contracted to do another film. Badass Digest's Devin Faraci asked him straight up if he was going to direct Avengers 3 and all Gunn could say is "no comment". I mean, that's not a confirmation or a denial of him doing Avengers 3, but clearly that idea is not off the table...
ALegendaryPanda - 7/21/2014, 11:31 AM
I don't know how I would feel about James Gunn directing Avengers 3. Depending on how amazing Age of Ultron is, I think I'd just want Joss Whedon to finish the trilogy!
McGee - 7/21/2014, 11:32 AM
Yeah...I suppose he COULD.

But...do you know who SHOULD?

Martin Campbell. He did Casino Royale and Mask of Zorro! I bet if you gave him a superhero film, he wouldn't f*ck it up!

I think Gunn is a better director than Whedon, but I want Gunn to do GOTG 2, so I don't know.
Reasonnnn - 7/21/2014, 11:34 AM
@jollem too many N's for my liking you bastard!

MightOfMagneto - 7/21/2014, 11:34 AM

If ever Whedon will not return for Avengers 3. I would like the Russo Bros to take a shot at it.
MrBlackjack - 7/21/2014, 11:34 AM
It's Badass Digest, but there's no scoop or rumors here, just a bit from an interview. Eh, I'll laugh anyway!

i think i would like Joss to finish the trilogy with Thanos cause it was his idea to have Thanos behind Lokis army in Avengers
Reasonnnn - 7/21/2014, 11:35 AM
@BatManiac Agreed, although maybe Whedon and Gunn could pull a CLOUD ATLAS and co-direct like The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer did.
kinghulk - 7/21/2014, 11:35 AM
i say give it to the russos, any chance joss could still write a script for avengers 3?
blackandyellow - 7/21/2014, 11:37 AM
