Paul Bettany Talks ‘The Vision’ Allegiance, Russo Bros, And CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Script

Though we've seen whose side the Vision will choose (at some point) in Captain America: Civil War, Paul Bettany talks here about how we might see the character constantly changing teams, and the actor also discusses the movie's script, and more. Check it out after the jump!

While promoting his directorial debut with Collider, Paul Bettany talked lengthily about reprising his Avengers: Age of Ultron role as the Vision in Captain America: Civil War. More specifically, the English actor discussed his reaction to the “fantastic” script, how his synthetic android will play into the team changing dynamic, if at all, and also working with the Russo brothers versus Joss Whedon.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Bettany of the Civil War script. “I think it’s really interesting, the way that a huge, epic superhero extravaganza is discussing a really interesting question, which is about people unilaterally going into other people’s countries and their intervention there. It’s actually an interesting thing to talk about in a massive forum like that.” Although we’ve seen the Vision siding with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man in leaked promotional artwork, it seems the character will play into the team changing dynamic. “What I love about my character is that there are so many places for him to go,” he said. “I think he’s very interested in what it means to be human and what love is. The only way one can guarantee one’s loyalty is love. Loyalty is beyond logic, really. Logic doesn’t really provide for loyalty. If your logic changes suddenly and things not make sense, you can alter your allegiance, but love stops you from being able to do that.”

When asked to compare working with Captain America: Civil War directors Joe & Anthony Russo versus Avengers: Age of Ultron’s Joss Whedon, Paul Bettany said they have different approaches.
“I loved working with all three of them,” he explained. “The really great thing with a cast that big is that you have two directors. You can always get one of them to have a chat with about what’s coming up next, and that’s great. I’m really excited to see what they do with what we shot.” Talking up Marvel Studios and its ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe, Bettany added, “I think fans feel that [the movies are] in safe hands, and the reason they feel like they’re in safe hands is because the films are being made by fans and they remember what it is about these stories that connected with them, in the first place. That’s why they have heart.” What do you think?

Directed by Anthony & Joe Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain. Starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Chadwick Boseman, Emily VanCamp, Daniel Brühl, Frank Grillo, William Hurt, and Martin Freeman, Captain America: Civil War is set for release on May 6, 2016.
