Marvel Artist, Alex Ross, Wants Jon Hamm For Captain America

The artist who redesigned Captain America for Marvel tells Entertainment Weekly that Jon Hamm should be up for the role

Alex Ross, an American comic book painter, illustrator, and plotter, has done work for Marvel Comics and DC Comics.



Cartoon superhero Captain America's real-life stylist insists Mad Men star Jon Hamm is the only actor who can play the colourful Marvel Comics character.

Ryan Phillippe and Chris Evans have emerged as frontrunners for the coveted role, but the artist who redesigned Captain America for Marvel tells Entertainment Weekly magazine the list of wannabes up for the part does not impress him.

Alex Ross says, "We've been saying for years, if you don't sign Jon Hamm to play this part, you're crazy.

"Captain America is supposed to be the patriarch of the Marvel universe. To get a guy in his early to mid-20s is only thinking about where the character began, not what he ultimately needs to become."

The guy playing Captain America should be old. At least as old as Jon Hamm. It would be nice if he actually looked like a grown man, the kind that could be the leader of a group of super heroes. The guys on the short list for this are a joke.

It might be alright, but the guy playing cap is going to be playing him for along ass time, in something like, one of marvel crazy 9 film deals. Basically they HAVE to cast young. Also Steve Rogers was young, so they're just being faithful to the material.

I love Ross's work, but everyone he draws looks pretty old. Hamm works for the Cap of modern day that is a leadership figure to the superheroes of the world. However, the Cap of this movie is going to be Cap in the beginning through when he freezes. I'm not sure how many years that is supposed to be, but I think the best thing to do would be to cast an actor in his mid to late 30's. Hamm is way too old to play a convincing young Cap.

you guys really have to stop saying that this actor cannot portray this character because of his age, that's just dumb. Robert Downey is 44 and he's Irron Man and nobody complains, you are looking at the best possible person to fill the role.

@charbelelnasr: In those people's defense, Tony Stark has always been portrayed as an established industrialist. Thus, him being a slight bit older is just fine. Cap is a young guy who wants to go into the military after WWII kicks off. His youthful willingness is a part of his story. Cap has to make the transition from weakling to leader of superhumans in one film, which is going to be super hard to cast. Thor and Iron Man are a bit easier because they have always been what they are to some degree.

I agree with Upupandaway. Casting too young ignores what his role is later, but casting too old ignores what his role is in the beginning so they're equally bad. Hamm doesn't seem like he would work at all for the Cap origin story becase I get the sense that when Steve becomes Captain America, he's pretty young. I think Mark Valley is perfect for older Cap, but he wouldn't work for the origin movie either, so I don't think he's the ideal choice. To me, Matt Damon always seemed to have the look that would work for both the older Cap and the younger Cap, but he doesn't seem to be a possibility any more. Also, you have to remember that they're looking for someone who can play Cap for a long time. Downey is in the suit. Norton changes to the Hulk. Cap is a guy in a costume. Not as easy to make an actor in his late 40's convincing for that role.

I know there is no chance of Ackles getting the role now because the idiotic CW wouldn't compromise on his contract even if he did get the role BUT, have any of you people whining he can't do it because he's just a kid actually LOOKED at him?

He does not look like some wimpy pretty boy. Yes he's handsome but he's not a 20 or even 25 year old anymore. He's 32 years old.

That is plenty old enough to be Cap. And he's got a manly voice, not a boy's voice and that was true even in at the start of Season 1 when he was 26.

And I can assure you that even the older actors who have worked on Supernatural and have also worked with award winning talent, respect him as an actor. He is consistently given high "above and beyond the call of PR duty" praise by a variety of semi-regulars and guest stars.

Thanks. I mean this is a comic related site, has anyone watched the interview with the Batman animated DVD director about the upcoming "Under the Red Hood", where Jensen is voicing the villain. The director was singing his praises. First time they worked with him and it was HIS first time doing purely voice work but obviously he made a strong impression with his work.

It has been commented in more than one Supernatural review that Jensen is highly able to convey a lot without much dialogue, using facial expression and body language and he is also clearly able to convey alot with ONLY dialogue, with just his voice.

I don't mind that people have other "favorites", people they'd rather see with the role but don't pretend it's because he looks too young(he doesn't) or because he's incapable of being strong enough(he is plenty capable) or because he lacks talent(because he doesn't, he is respected by his peers, the production teams and the crews he works with).

The image of Cap in my mind will always be the guy who looks to be in his late 30's/early 40's, but that simply will not fly in a Captain America movie where Cap's origin story has to be told. It has to be an actor that's in his late 20's/early 30's.

I hate the idea of a young(er) actor playing Cap until he gradually gets old enough to look the part, but that is how it was done in the comics and that's how it needs to be done in the movie.

Jon Hamm is a cool actor, and I'd love to see him play a superhero (preferably Green Arrow), but at 39, he is a bit too old to play the part.

There is no way in hell or anywhere else a GOD OF THUNDER is taking orders from some punk-ass 21 year old. That whole shit-list of Cap wanna-bees Marvel is trying out should be torn up and tossed into a fireplace. Then a new list of men should be written and auditioned. MEN, not boys. Cap should be a little older to reflect the wisdom of a seasoned soldier and experienced military mind. He should be imposing and charismatic. Hamm might be what, 38 or so, but so effin what, he looks young and can bodybuild until he's thicker. Just look at Ferrigno at his age.

Anyone who finds anyone on the wannabee shitlist the right type for Captain America only does so in their dreams while they're kissin him.

Alex Ross is right- Cap can't be a whiny litle punk - at least notafter the serum. I think that Mark Valley is a better choice but I'm glad to see people within Marvel using their heads on this.

Just wanted to comment that Matt Damon is the best choice. I wish Marvel would just spend some money to get a big name for Cap. He needs to be a guy that can command the screen when he's alongside Jackson, Downey, and Norton. Damon is the only guy I can see truly doing this. Marvel is dropping the ball on this one, IMHO.

I agree with him. I kinda think it would be a good idea to cast young actor to play Cap in the origins movie, and then cast a guy like Hamm or Valley to play Cap in the Avengers.

I can't see some punk baby-face teeny-bopper barking orders at RDJ and Hemsworth.

Once Steve takes the serum it changes his physiology thus explaining the slight maturation. Besides it's not like Valley looks ancient he looks just like Steve Rogers check him out!

I agree, man. Damon was born to play Cap. He has that all-american look to him...blonde, blue eyes, etc. He would be perfect, but I just can't see him ever taking on a role like this. I don't think he would ever want to be associated with a movie like this. Anyway, it would be cool if Marvel opened up the bank and gave him call just for the hell of it.
