During the exhibition of his amazing artwork for Marvel Studios in Paris, concept artist Ryan Meinerding discussed with CineComics.fr his most recent work with the studio; The Avengers big-screen superhero assembly. Commenting on designing Captain America's uniform, his unexposed ears, seeing the film finished, and much more, watch the nine-and-a-half minute long video interview below!

Here's a transcribed excerpt that address the design of Captain America's suit.
"For the costume of Captain America I had to really get involved and ensure that Chris [Evans] appears as a tall, muscular strongest possible in fact. [...] Joss [Whedon] had the desire to suit the film version of the Avengers to offer a version closer to that of comics with minor adjustments. [...] We have encountered some problems especially with the helmet the Captain, he would for example be opened with the ears of Captain in the open air, but I think it did not work. So we decided to cover the ears. You know I saw the movie and I think that really makes the costume well on the big screen. [...] What I can tell you is that everyone has been very involved and really tried to offer the best costumes. [...] I wanted really make the transition from World War II and when he wakes up 70 years later when we discover a completely different outfit. And that, that will interest people."

Nice! Meinerding is a great artist.

Sounds like he has to talk himself into liking how the Cap suit turned out. Even though I'm not really loving how it turned out I can forgive them a little bit because it has to be one on the hardest marvel costumes to put on film and you can't just drop the uniform. Unlike the complete redesign of the X-men suits Cap is to tied to his look. That Being said I would love to see a version of the Commander Rogers uniform in a future movie, that is by far my favorite.

Amazing Talent, Amazing Response
BrotherStarkofMABMindz - 3/18/2012, 1:34 PM
They took Thors Helmet, gave Cap a helmet and keep one on Loki.

The approach does make sense though, they couldn't have some mask with exposed ears and wings. Maybe the costume will change as we see more Cap.......hopefully.
dmm5 - 3/18/2012, 1:41 PM
Can we see dragon scales on the suit next time? :/
dmm5 - 3/18/2012, 1:43 PM
@TheBigBoss917- Cap's suit is way closer to the comics than Bane's but why am I feeding you troll.... You should be slayed!!! >:O
gambgel - 3/18/2012, 1:44 PM

Captain America's Uniform sucks!
marvel72 - 3/18/2012, 1:49 PM
@ thebigboss917

not a fan of the helmet/mask piece of the costume,it looks better without it.

but saying that it looks soo much better than bane's.
Loki9876 - 3/18/2012, 1:50 PM
Cap's suit is okay.
rockerdude22 - 3/18/2012, 1:52 PM
Cap's costume will look good on film. Take my word for it. On another note, I'd love to see what he can do with other characters, such as Dr. Strange, Namor, Black Panther, and even some of the cosmic characters.
Ghostt - 3/18/2012, 1:53 PM
dang, it sounds like he knows Cap's outfit sucks. that's a damn shame.
jameshowlett2151 - 3/18/2012, 1:55 PM
Is no one going to mention the freaking HULKBUSTER ARMOR behind him!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
genesis609 - 3/18/2012, 1:57 PM
james... thats iron monger...
THORGodOfThunder - 3/18/2012, 1:59 PM
I bet Cap's suit will look great in the final cut of the movie
pepe - 3/18/2012, 1:59 PM
Well, there he said it... No ears on Cap... bastard
batmanrises - 3/18/2012, 1:59 PM
Even the artist knows the helmet sucks. He just can't bring himself to say it for obvious reasons.
TheActionAce - 3/18/2012, 2:09 PM
have to say the helmet does suck, expect the costume

but i think the helmet probably would look better in film
J0RELLC00LJ - 3/18/2012, 2:12 PM
We can complain about it all we want, but we all know the helmet/mask is gonna get about 15-20 mins, tops, screen time then its comin off so we can all see Evans face. Prolly in his contract somewhere.
RainbowRaider - 3/18/2012, 2:12 PM
I don't think Cap's costume will be distracting in the film. But regardless, the costume design team failed miserably.

And it has nothing to do with Cap's ears, people. It's simple color distribution. Specifically, there's 3 areas where they blew it.

1) Cap's arms. Your eyes automatically go to the white of his upper arms instead of cool tones of the blue. So you automatically look at the inside of his arm, which makes the arm seem smaller and less intimidating. This is a shame on so many levels, not the very least because Evans busted his butt to get a great physique for the character and they diminish it with a mistake so simple and unnecessary.

2) Cap's neck. Cap's ears aren't exposed in TFA and yet his helmet looks awesome. Why? Simple: His neck is exposed. Much like I pointed out above, the contrasting flesh tones balance out the head being slightly larger. What helps this even more is the chin strap that's brown, because this is even more of a ''cool'' color tone than blue. Thus, the flesh tones stand out even more compared to the two cooler tones around it and make his lower mouth and neck seem bigger. In Avengers, the bulbous helmet is just enhanced by the distribution of slightly darker blue around it.

3) Cap's belt. It's size greatly diminishes everything around it since it's so massive and the contrasting red and white are too small to combat it. Thus Cap's abdomen/torso are reduced to almost emaciated proportions. The blue doesn't help either, because it blends his legs into his body and gives the appearance of a individual who's wearing his belt far too high.

Whatever, just my two cents. Design is all in the purpose. If they wanted to make Cap look small, they succeeded brilliantly. The fact that Evans still looks like a born leader is a testament to his physical acting ability.
Coldblood6 - 3/18/2012, 2:23 PM
Interesting critique RainbowRider; I don't know enough about these things to agree or disagree.

IMO the costume is fantastic. The only real problem is the helmet because it increases the head size to body proportion and CE is already not that muscular.

The screenshots and clips with CAP not wearing the helmet look fantastic!

The ones with the helmet may look excellent (CAP leaping off the bus) or may be a bit off (the circling group shot); but certainly not scene/film ruining.

Some of the promotional material have some VFX modifications of the body proportions that make it look really good. Hopefully something similar will be applied to the actual film.

JDUKE25 - 3/18/2012, 2:40 PM
I think the ears exposed looks just fine, but I think he looks better without anything on his head.

THE COSTUME LOOKS BETTER WHEN ITS DRAWN..BECAUSE IT LOOK MORE FORM FITTED AND HUGS THE FACE..WHEN YOU SEE IT PRACTICAL IT LOOKS BULKIER, THE HELMET ESPECIALLY..I WAS HOPING THEY DID LIKE WHAT THEY DID IN DAREDEVIL WHERE THEY MADE A LEATHER FORM FITTED COWL

Cartoon22 - 3/18/2012, 2:47 PM
@GUNSMITH dude its looks like that daredevil mask look at the mask i posted its in the trailer ppl OPEN YOUR EYES

@Sanderman Yes i think so too and i prefer the cowl just look at how much better it looks.....

Coldblood6 - 3/18/2012, 3:03 PM
@ RainbowRider

I am not making any derogatory comments about you're critique. I found it very well written and intersting. I wish I had more of an appreciation of the things you spoke about, but I don't. You could very well be correct because I do believe the CE's body looks too small at times.

Thanx for an intelligent critique rather than the usual 'IT SUCKS' with nothing to back it up.
JasonCYates - 3/18/2012, 3:08 PM
I don't mind the ears being covered, I just wish they weren't covered w/ a octagonal cup thing that disturbs overall sleekness of the head gear. I'm glad it still is a helmet, but there is nothing else about the suit that makes him warrior like or alluding to him being a soldier, he just looks like a football mascot. I really need to see him in motion more, we haven't really seen Cap in action yet.
Cartoon22 - 3/18/2012, 3:10 PM
@JasonCYates look at the cowl it wont even have octagonal cup things covering the ears!
TheIconicMan - 3/18/2012, 3:26 PM
In his new clothes, the Cap. looks too thin. Funny, because in his movie, his clothes made him strong.
chuckg313 - 3/18/2012, 3:33 PM
didnt sound too confident in caps uni....
Boyle360 - 3/18/2012, 4:33 PM
@ELgUaSoN and @Cartoon22
He looks MUCH bigger and more badass in that pic where he's holding his belt. If you look at any clips from trailers, he's definitely more bulky in the scenes where he's at the SHIELD base. (clips of him in the first The Avengers teaser from C.A The First Avenger and the other trailers when he's speaking to Stark.) He's much bigger in any scenes that look like they're in the SHIELD base.
Hmm maybe Chris Evans lost a lot of weight doing a lot of tiring work filming the big action sequence in the city. He has said before that it's difficult for him to keep weight on, just like me. Bulking up is difficult for both of us, usually people who are tall and naturally thin guys. Endomorphs I believe is the correct term.
theomegasanction - 3/18/2012, 5:11 PM
I liked Cap's suit in First Avenger. The fabric texture bugs the crap out of me, I hate how when light hits it flattens out the form of his body and the way it wrinkles. Also why does Cap need a helmet? Why not Hawkeye and Black Widow? Two humans without special powers just very well trained bodies and they have little to no padding in their uniforms and no helmets? So why can't Cap just have a form fitting cowl? and sew the star on his chest into the uniform like the first movie suit so it doesn't hang out like a ridiculous piece of jewelry ready to be grabbed by the enemy. Other than that I like the suit, just honest opinion on what sticks out to me
Giraffehead - 3/18/2012, 5:15 PM
The reason he didn't feel confident is because the reporter told him that the fans were not responding well to it and you can tell he felt bad about that. Most of the issue that he tried to explain away was the helmet.

If you remove Cap's helmet from his uniform I think it works really well.

@RainbowRaider

You mention that the white is distracting, but that should work in his favor because white adds size and it is over his biceps. I believe this will be effective with movie lighting.

Also you said that the brown strap 'is even more of a ''cool'' color tone than blue'. Brown is a warm color, being in the red family. I don't think this has anything to do with color, but the break up from the cowl. There are ways of making a cowl look cool, but I have yet to see one where the helmet is that shape.

His belt also works in his favor. Having a belt of that size makes his waist look smaller. This gives the torso a strong 'v' shape. If you were to look at body builders, this is the exact shape they are trying to achieve.

Now in my opinion the uniform will work well on screne. If I were to change a couple things, it would be to shave the helmet down to not add girth, and leave the boots less bulky. Everything else works just fine.
JonathaNisMagnuM - 3/18/2012, 5:21 PM
Cartoon22 You keep posting the SAME picture but have we yet to see a Pic of Cap in that Cowl? Other than that Picture you keep posting?!? All I'm sayin is you cant be 100% sure he's gonna wear that cowl. Theres about 3 major scenes where Cap will be wearing his full costume, & that costume has the EAR COVERED HELMET, NOT THE COWL.

1)the 1st scene is gonna be where he comes down to stop the fight between thor & Iron Man, & THATS where we see the scene of Thor coming down w the hammer on Cap's shield & CAP IS WEARING AN EAR COVERED HELMET
CAP VS THOR

2) The scene where Cap is fighting Loki...Obviously if youve already seen pictures from the set pics, youll notice that Caps EARS ARE COVERED! NOT A COWL!!

3) THE FINAL SCENE WHERE THE AVENGERS ARE ALL TOGETHER....NO EARS SHOWING! ITS A COWL, NOT A HELMET

The ONLY Time we've seen cap w the cowl/ear opened is in concept art & stuff they put on toy labels!! Actual pics he's ALWAYS WEARING THE DAMN COVERED HELMET & now were hearing proof from the concept artist himself on here, THAT THEY CHOSE TO COVER THE EARS!!!
Give it a rest already dude, he wont be wearing that cowl that has his ears opened, it was just concept art. & that pic you keep posting of the cowl in his locker is JUST A PICTURE...They could've easily done another take & put in the new cowl! But if they didnt foerget to switch it out, it doesnt matter, HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF " MOVIE MISTAKES"?!? He wont be wearing that EAR OPENED COWL, HE'S GONNA WEAR THE HELMET! YES, I DONT LIKE IT AS ALOT OF PEOPLE ON HERE HATE IT TOO, BUT THATS THE WAY THE COSTUME IS! ACCEPT IT, JUST LIKE LAST YEAR WHEN WE ACCEPTED 30 SEC OF THOR'S HELMET IN THE ENTIRE 2 HR MOVIE!!
JonathaNisMagnuM - 3/18/2012, 5:50 PM
Here's more pROOF THAT marvel has messed up before!!

IRON MAN 2 THE PICS OF THE MARK VI that fans were seeing in concept art had iron man w/ Gold Biceps & Gold fron thighs...here are set pics & actual concept art from the film BEFORE THEY HAD A SWITCHEROO

maRK 6 3
DOWN HERE'S THE SCENE AT THE STARK EXPO...NOTICE THE GOLD BICEPS
mark 6 2
mark 6

NOWWW....WHAT WE GOT INSTEAD WAS A LITTLE DIFFERENT SUIT MEANING THE BICEPS & FRON THISGHS GOT A NEW SLIVER/GREY/METAL COLORING... LIKE THIS

SEE?!?!? A MINOR CHANGE DURING PRODUCTION!! Cartoon22, that's all Cap's suit got, A MINOR CHANGE IN PRODUCTION...ONLY THING IS THEY DIDNT KNOW THAT COVERING EARS OR CHANGING ONE SPOT OF COLOR ON A SUIT MAKES A DIFF...BUT, AS WE;VE SEEN IN THESE RANTS SO FAR, IT DOES
Cartoon22 - 3/18/2012, 6:17 PM
@JonathanisMagnum1985 Well maybe BUT.....those iron man mark VI were set photos not official/trailer pics/video on that gold biceps for ironman ....and the mask i see is in the trailer and you say it might be a movie mistake but i dont think so. also u named 2 scenes where hes wearing the Helmet (only 3 theyres more scenes like in that nasa base and etc etc i sure theyres more than 3 scenes....)

1. scene where he is wearing the cowl mask when hes talking to tony stark .And dont say is the fabric under the helmet because its way different than the cowl in the case.

2.the scene when hes walking with agent coulson and hes given his updated costume.

3.theres toy figures and promo art and i know promo art could change but theyve even shown it in late promo stuff and on billboards! for the movie.
