Hayley Atwell Will NOT Return For CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

After modest interviews and a deleted scene from The Avengers alluded to her reprisal in Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Hayley Atwell now reportedly confirms it's not happening.

After playing coy with “I'm not allowed to say yet,” last September, Hayley Atwell had seemingly confirmed she’d be reprising her ‘Peggy Carter’ role from Captain America: The First Avenger in the 2014 sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. However, a recent interview with the English actress indicates that headlines apparently jumped the gun. An excerpt from her chat with TimeOut simply reveals, “She won’t, she confirms, be back for the [Captain America] sequel.”

Now that Atwell can finally confirm she won't return for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, more questions are raised. Considering the character is at least 80 years old in the present-day of Marvel's shared universe, in which a deleted scene from The Avengers confirmed she was still active, an older actress may be sought out. It's also possible that Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter's relationship will flesh out in a third Captain America film, for which plans have been alluded to too.

Perhaps Marvel's creative consultant Joss Whedon will make use of the couple's heartbreaking dynamic for a subplot in The Avengers highly-anticipated 2015 sequel. The writer-director revealed early last year that one of the best scenes he wrote for The Avengers was never filmed and a “beautiful and poignant scene” between Steve and Peggy in the present. What do you think?

Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will pick-up where the highly anticipated film “Marvel’s The Avengers” leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D, and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.

Starring Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Frank Grillo, Cobie Smulders with Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and is scheduled for release on April 4, 2014.

So... no WW2 flashbacks. Well, at least I hope this keep the focus on a great Winter Soldier story.

NOOO
TheBeard - 1/2/2013, 11:39 AM

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Doesn't mean anything though. Miranda Tate was "confirmed" to not be Talia too. She could still be in it.
Shamo - 1/2/2013, 11:51 AM
dont like. she was good and looks amazing.

also, MCU easily has the best looking actresses, huh? compared to fo(X)-men and DC
1) Scarlet Johansson
2) Natalie Portman
3) Hayley Atwell
4) Jamie Alexander
5) Liv Tylor
6) Katt Dennings
7) Gwyneth Paltrow
8) Cobie Smulders

physically speaking, thats some fine casting.
Optimus83 - 1/2/2013, 11:55 AM

She should have played Sharon Carter. Oh well.
Shamo - 1/2/2013, 12:09 PM
@Optimus, i agree she'd be a great WW
alamborn19 - 1/2/2013, 12:20 PM
question: will there be a phase 3?
included:captain america 3, thor 3, ant-man 2, iron-man 4, avengers 3(hopefully with kang or ultron?)
SpideyQuad - 1/2/2013, 12:21 PM
Wonder woman? Naa, her hair is the wrong color. To Light :-)
Temple - 1/2/2013, 12:23 PM
Makes since for her not to return because she's suppose to be old in the present time when cap meets her again.

@Optimus83 She has the perfect facial structure and body for wonder woman.

@alamborn19 the obvious answer is if phase 2 is successful yes. In the form that you wrote down? That remains To be seen.

There have been reports that Marvel is doing preliminary work on Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Luke Cage, Iron Fists just to name a few, not to mention the In Humans and Guardians of the Galaxy, which if is successful will probably get a sequel.

and this doesn't even consider the possibility of Marvel Productions deciding to branch out and go in other directions, such as a Western utilizing their stable of old West characters. A Ms. Marvel movie, etc., etc.

And don't forget a certain green gamma ray charged character

So I guess in closing my point is predicting what phase 3 might end up being is a tricky matter at this point.

I have to say you can't much more beautiful than Haley Atwell. I was really hoping to see her with blonde hair as Sharon Carter in CA2.
lntrn8 - 1/2/2013, 12:33 PM
she is incredibly HOT. Please post animated gifs of her friends . . . & thanks in advance
JazzBebopHero - 1/2/2013, 12:36 PM
This is very unfortunate. I wish she would be in the 2nd film. She is a good actress, classy, and absolutely beautiful.
CherryBomb - 1/2/2013, 12:36 PM
Aww this is annoying! :(
They best choose a good Sharon!
I'm hoping Abbie Cornish

Maia87 - 1/2/2013, 12:37 PM
Damn, she was great in 'Captain America'.

ComicBookGoth - 1/2/2013, 12:40 PM
s'a Bummer.

she's gorgeous
IronHood - 1/2/2013, 12:44 PM
Can an old Peggy Carter still be in the movie? It sucks she cant be portraying the role of Peggy Carter but since it never happened in Avengers I was really hoping to see Cap be the man of out his time with an aged Peggy, it can still happen right? Just use another actor, obviously not her but someone else.
BIGBMH - 1/2/2013, 12:55 PM
It would have been nice if they could have appropriately aged her to play the older Peggy.
dgill - 1/2/2013, 1:22 PM
Major bummer. She has been my favorite female character in any of the Marvel stuff to date.
danielfoez - 1/2/2013, 1:40 PM
That is definetely a huge bummer for me, given that she and chris evans had the best marvel on-screen chemistry...I hoped for her to be sharon in the sequel! She just needed blonde hair and an american accent :(
