“One of the driving forces from the beginning,” said Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, “was to create a gritty world that was still very colorful. I miss some of the color palettes of the ’50s and ’60s science fiction films when things were much brighter and to intermingle those different looks from the past and create our own look was very important.” One of the Marvel production's largest sets was the Kyln, the space prison where the Guardians first meet and form. According to production designer Charlie Wood, the Kyln was “a 360-degree set and comprised of 350 thousand pounds of steel across three levels, extended in post-production by a further 200 feet.” One of the brighter environments in Guardians of the Galaxy is Xandar, a watery planet and home to the Nova Corps. Inspired by the Santiago Caltrava in Zürich, Switzerland, the actual Xandar set is just a “footing for a gigantic virtual set,”and its backdrop is provided by the “monumental steel, glass and white concrete of the Liege train station in Belgium.”
Another prominent Guardians of the Galaxy setting is Knowhere, which, similar in the comics, serves as a “port of call and observatory for intergalactic travelers of all species and from all times, located inside the decapitated head of a Celestial, on the edge of the universe. Knowhere is evocative of an industrial mining town and is where The Collector has his museum.” Then there is the “vibrant” Boot of Jemiah, possibly glimpsed in the Guardians teaser poster, and the Morag. In the comics, Jemiah was a Celestial tasked with analyzing life-form samples, while Morag was a Kree tribal leader who oversaw the construction of the Blue Area of the Moon. The film’s Morag is an “underwater ocean planet where Quill finds the orb in its sunken temple.”

Regarding the many spacecrafts in Guardians of the Galaxy, production designer Charlie Wood and his team also designed Quill’s spaceship Malino and Ronan the Accuser’s Dark Aster. The Malino was a 14-week construct involving several trades and it was “built as a double level composite set, with an upper flight deck and lower living quarters.” For the atmosphere of the Malino, Wood and his team followed Guardians director James Gunn’s instructions that “Quill’s environment be reminiscent of Earth and have a tangible quality—mechanical with chrome and leather and a muscle-car look.” As for Ronan’s Dark Aster, which was seen briefly in the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer, it was designed suggestive of a flying mausoleum. “The design is minimal and brutal, a stark gray colorless world devoid of any set dressing whatsoever, and relying purely on its heavy concrete-like architecture to convey its tone and function.”

In other Guardians of the Galaxy news, the recent prequel comic has confirmed that British actress Ophelia Lovibond’s pink character, who was introduced alongside The Collector, Taneleer Tivan (Benicio del Toro), in Thor: The Dark World mid-credits,  is in fact Carina Walters. In the comics, she had a deep mythology as The Collector’s daughter, however, we still don’t know how their relationship will translate on-screen. Anyhow, in addition to the the Orb, which is the Infinity Gem MacGuffin of Guardians of the Galaxy, the prelude comic also teased Yondu, Ronan, the big bad Thanos, as well as his relationship to “frenemies” Nebula & Gamora. What do you think?

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014.

JoJo1982 - 4/2/2014, 12:34 PM
@omarvl

Star Wars!!!

I just finished reading annihilation series again

Can't wait to see this movie, it's really going to open the doors for something even bigger!!!
marvel72 - 4/2/2014, 12:35 PM
@ omarvels

all studios will be watching how this one performs,good or bad it'll be what decides the future of all cosmic comic book movies.
batz11 - 4/2/2014, 12:36 PM
Nice...
DaVinci31 - 4/2/2014, 12:37 PM
Quill’s environment be reminiscent of Earth and have a tangible quality—mechanical with chrome and leather and a muscle-car look.

CuddlyCereal - 4/2/2014, 12:37 PM
Knowhere is in the movie?? Awesome!

I hope comrade Cosmo is beink there too.
Joementum - 4/2/2014, 12:37 PM
That is a LOT of info.

Now we need more info on Carina and Michael Korvac.
ALmazing - 4/2/2014, 12:37 PM
I have a feeling that Guardians will reference Star Wars and Indiana Jones a lot since Quill is a kid form the 80's and the intro of the trailer shows a clear reference to Raider's. Its also not the first time a Marvel movie does a tribute to Star Wars.

antman8o8 - 4/2/2014, 12:38 PM
I wonder what Infinity Stone/Gem the orb could be? We already have Space (Tesseract) and Power (Aether) and I'm convinced that the ord in Loki's scepter is the Mind stone/gem.

UGH this movie is going to be so good either way!
JoJo1982 - 4/2/2014, 12:38 PM
So I guess judging by those pics that's how Thanos and Yondu(HE DOESNT HAVE HIS FIN) will look in the movie
HiTcH - 4/2/2014, 12:39 PM
And...
Angela?

UltimateHunt - 4/2/2014, 12:40 PM
Ms.Marvel and Planet Hulk depends on this film. Im sure marvel doesnt know YET what films to annouced. If GotG does good, than that will prove that "From Marvel Studios" without Ironman, Hulk, Thor, or the Avengers can be good by just the studio. and like i said the intro to cosmic, it all depends on the audiences and profit
DaVinci31 - 4/2/2014, 12:40 PM
I hope they do find a good way to "intermingle" the color schemes for this movie once its out of post-production; some of the stuff from the trailer looked a little too flashy for me.
marvel72 - 4/2/2014, 12:41 PM
@ CuddlyCereal

i heard gunn & feige say you'll have to watch the movie to find out,sort of hinting at it.

i think there will be a cameo at least.
Joementum - 4/2/2014, 12:42 PM
Yondu's fin

I think they will explain it as "hair"
and Yondu just has a buzz cut
MellanRum - 4/2/2014, 12:42 PM
I'd say that this movie has a lot riding on it. It could probably be compared (although on a different level) to the first Iron Man film.
If this performs well, there's a chance that DC/WB will start taking chances with other properties that they'd not consider as safe as Batman/Superman/Justice League.
I'm hoping it does really well for the sake of all CBMs. At the same time I'm not really worried since I'm sure Gunn will do a great job and hype/buzz for the movie is already starting to grow.
DaVinci31 - 4/2/2014, 12:43 PM
Also, Ophelia Lovibond sounds like a Bond girl

lol
CuddlyCereal - 4/2/2014, 12:43 PM
@Marvel72 Yeah, I got pretty excited when I saw him say that.

Here's hoping Mantis and maybe even Bug get a small cameo or referenced somehow.
JoJo1982 - 4/2/2014, 12:45 PM
@greenlantern

I see no fin but the same thing we saw in those set pics awhile back :(

Kindve bummed about it
ruadh - 4/2/2014, 12:45 PM
I'm sure the movie will do okay, but still feel it'll be Marvel's most modest hit.
Pasto - 4/2/2014, 12:45 PM
I get a Green Lantern vibe from this film. Prove me wrong Gunn.
cipher - 4/2/2014, 12:47 PM
Good stuff.

I really want to see Xandar. That's one of the designs that stuck with me the most when I went through all the cosmic shit.
Pasto - 4/2/2014, 12:48 PM
There is this article I read on Forbes about why DC doesn't have to be like Marvel. It has some rather valid points in it.
Gusto - 4/2/2014, 12:49 PM
Ophelia Lovibond sounds like a
70's pornstar.

cipher - 4/2/2014, 12:50 PM
I want a spaceship. Something like the Millennium Falcon or the Normandy, or some shit. I'll also need some minions foolish enough to believe that I'll actually know what the hell I'm doing, too.

I'll probably rename the bloody thing every other day when I'm smashed.
Cracker23 - 4/2/2014, 12:51 PM
I wonder if the mind stone (Loki's staff) is being used by Hydra in AOS to control Deathlok and allow for clairvoyance
0megaDaGod - 4/2/2014, 12:52 PM
Good lord they are going deep on this movie
CorndogBurglar - 4/2/2014, 12:53 PM
Aw man, Celestials!!!!! Even if its the decapitated head of Knowhere and the Boot of Jemia, it at least means Celestials exist in the MCU!

I'm wet.
ChiliConCarney - 4/2/2014, 12:53 PM
Very excite!!!

AlexdoxA - 4/2/2014, 12:54 PM
GOTG:The Green Lantern of good movies.
Melkaticox - 4/2/2014, 12:54 PM
@JoJo1982 If it makes you feel better, the art isn't exactly a great representation of the movie.
LordYeezus - 4/2/2014, 12:55 PM
@0mega

That's what she said.
Joementum - 4/2/2014, 12:55 PM
Celestials > Galactus ???

Compared to the fart cloud, yes.
sKeemAn - 4/2/2014, 12:55 PM
cosmo for the cameo!
tvor03 - 4/2/2014, 12:57 PM
@Antman8o8

so that leaves soul, reality, and time. With Quill having such an affinity for his brief childhood and life on earth, I'm guessing the Time Gem would make the most sense from a character POV.

@Cracker23

It would appear to me the obvious reason Deathlok is working with the Clairvoyant is simply to protect his son. I don't think it has anything to do with the mind gem.
0megaDaGod - 4/2/2014, 12:59 PM
@Yeezus

CuddlyCereal - 4/2/2014, 1:00 PM

God Cosmo was the best. " Sorry comrade, Cosmo was just tellink funny joke"
Malcopunch - 4/2/2014, 1:02 PM
