Joss Whedon On AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. And Rumors Of Marvel Character Rage

Joss Whedon is on top of his game while discussing Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., saying that there won't be any camp nonsense such as members of the Avengers constantly interacting with the cast off-screen.

Joss Whedon is making the usual press rounds for Much Ado About Nothing which opens wide June 7th. He recently appeared on Entertainment Weekly's new XM radio show 'InsideTV Podcast' to discuss that film but also touched on his upcoming ABC television drama, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. After a bit, the interview dove right in to the question on everyone's mind, how does Coulson survive that spear through the chest from Loki? Whedon answers the question BUT in typical Whedon-fashion, stating, "It's a very interesting explanation, see what happens is you tuned in this Fall and found out. Hashtag #CoulsonLives." There were some chuckles after that one, have to love that Whedon. But Joss did go on to say that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will "earn" Coulson's return, there will be an "explanation" he continued, "That's not something you take lightly."

Specific questions about Coulson return aside, Whedon went on to vocalize his intent for the show. Said Whedon, "It's very important to me that the show stands on its own. The people that never saw any of the movies can tune in and enjoy it. We like being apart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and we like having all of the mythos to play off of but if the show was "You just missed Tony Stark. Wow, he was JUST here" that would be the most unsatisfying show ever. We have an ensemble, a new ensemble- apart from Clark, it's all people I've never worked with before but I'm really excited about them, I'm really proud of them. I think people will want to see them every week."

Sticking to the show, the interviewer is definitely up on his Geek culture as he knew to ask if J. August Richards was portraying Rage, a Marvel Comics character of modest fame from the superhero group, the New Warriors. Many speculate that Richards is playing the character based on a screengrab from the show's Marvel Comics title card shown in the first trailer. Said Joss, "I'm not going to say who he's playing but he's certainly cranky. [J.'s] great, he came in to guest star and he tears it up. He's got that kind of energy, he's so much fun and [a] lovely guy, it's always nice when you get to see your old friends again."

There's much more, the above quotes merely scratch the surface of a pretty interesting chat with Whedon. It's well worth a listen as Joss also talks about whether he prefers working in film, television, comic books or developing online content. He also reflects on his mindset he receives the news that his show was cancelled with typical Whedon wit.

Joss Whedon is a living, breathing Yoda, I swear.
JerBear - 6/2/2013, 9:30 PM
He's certainly cranky? Hmmm...

And @Grif.... just no. More like [frick]ing awesome.
MrMartinMarvel - 6/2/2013, 9:32 PM
@grif Any particular reason you decided this show sucks the minute it was announced?
Nivekian - 6/2/2013, 9:34 PM
It's Rage, or he very well might play the Luke Cage card. Throw in a Retired Agent Danny Rand, you got a Hero's for Hire show.
GliderMan - 6/2/2013, 9:36 PM
On a side not, Guardians of the Galaxy needs to be butt-loaded with Easter eggs.
AlexanderLykins - 6/2/2013, 9:37 PM
@grif
I have to disagree on this one. I think it'll do fine.
AlexanderLykins - 6/2/2013, 9:38 PM
While the I wasn't all that excited for the show to start with, I'm starting to get the feeling this show will be very successful. I just hope it doesn't take itself too seriously.

SFCamerica - 6/2/2013, 9:48 PM
You should all know @Grif's M.O. by now, that's all he ever has to contribute. Does anyone honestly care what he thinks, ever?
AlexanderLykins - 6/2/2013, 9:52 PM
@SFCamerica
I listen from time to time. He sometimes has some insightful things to say. When I agree that I think something looks like sh*t, I feel we grow a little closer after every encounter.
Ramiel - 6/2/2013, 9:56 PM
It doesn't matter what @Grif has to say!

FlapjackAce - 6/2/2013, 11:05 PM
It's totally rage. You can't fool me whedon.
Or can you?
PeterDarker - 6/2/2013, 11:10 PM
@FreakingIntelligentRobertGriffin, Coulson sucks but you like him in the movies...where else have you seen him?
JerBear - 6/2/2013, 11:34 PM
@11TheQuestion11
"MARVEL : B-but Joss, we can make a TV show of practically any SUPERhero that we have rights t-

Joss : SHIELD."

Do you even realize the irony here? You meant for this to be seen as a bad thing but it's really the opposite. With SHIELD Marvel can have a multitude of superheroes and villains, so why focus on just one?
loki668 - 6/2/2013, 11:37 PM
@Benjamitesandwich

Nah. If he was Yoda he would have answered with something like "Tell you I won't. Watch the show you must". Imagine it in the Yoda voice, it helps.

@11TheQuestion11

There's nothing to say that the success of this show won't lead to something like that.
novaprime - 6/2/2013, 11:59 PM
I want to see C level and D level characters appear on this Show, bring something New, make the fans happy. I dont wanna see made up charactera like Coulsin take over Marvel Shows, a Nick fury show wouldve been nice!!
Gunslinger - 6/3/2013, 12:25 AM
Arrow is terrible. Some of the worst acting I've ever seen on a TV show. I wanted it to be good. I really, really did. Smallville had Lex as its saving grace. It should have been called "The Lex Luthor Show". Arrow has nothing. Gave up after 9 episodes. It insults anyone's intelligence.

I honestly hope S.H.I.E.L.D. tries to do the opposite of what WB does with their properties. Arrow makes "The OC" and "One Tree Hill" look like they had drama titans playing the parts. Joss knows what he's doing. He was a giant on TV before Avengers.
loki668 - 6/3/2013, 12:38 AM
@11TheQuestion11

I don't mean leading to that on THAT particular show but SHIELD could pave the way for more shows.
MarvelDCfanboy - 6/3/2013, 1:42 AM
have Joss Whedon direct Iron Man 4...fans will be happy..
breakUbatman - 6/3/2013, 2:03 AM
@TheRealRemyLebeau

But Loki didn't die, nor was it implied - he just got lost in the void and even appeared in the after credits.

@PeterDarker

Agent Coulson is in the comics and Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon. Personally I enjoyed him in Iron Man but he seems almost sinister in Thor then is turned into a goofball in The Avengers. His appeal though totally went over my head, I get Tony, Loki and Hulk but Coulson, he's like Happy Hogan to me.

As long as the SHIELD agents are more like the ones that located Hulk in TIH, or the ones that found Banner in Avengers and less like the Galaga playing type I'm on board.

Bring it I need some good tv
NoAssemblyReqd - 6/3/2013, 2:38 AM
Jeez, Whedon's wit is sharp as a tack. Yeah, he's probably answered this question before, but sometimes it seems like his brain is wirelessly connected to a Quip Generator.
kemuael - 6/3/2013, 2:51 AM
I hope Summer Glau gets a role is this show :-)
Demongod20 - 6/3/2013, 3:33 AM
@ TheRealRemyLebeau

You can't count Loki. They showed that he was still alive in the after credits sequence in Thor 1.
manofmidgard - 6/3/2013, 5:14 AM
*sigh*
i never watch tv. but i will buy season one when it finally comes out on dvd. unless this turns into marvel's version of smallville. *cringe*
bah. whedon's talents could be put to use in better ways. two words: hulk movie. 'nuff said.
continuezero - 6/3/2013, 5:44 AM
I'm guessin it'll be Extremis that brings Coulson back.
loki668 - 6/3/2013, 6:05 AM
I'm guessing that it will be love of cheeseburgers that brings Coulson back.
Boogie138 - 6/3/2013, 8:03 AM
Rage?! early 90's Rage?! for real, how did i miss this even being a rumour?? I loved that character back in the day, glad he getting props in live action. if it not him, then fcuk this show lol
Fogs - 6/3/2013, 8:04 AM
Nice, I just don't want something like "oh, we have the best docs and he was treated, that's all" kind of explanation.

He was [frick]in trespassed by the infinity spear, ffs. In most parts of the world, at least :P
Fogs - 6/3/2013, 8:04 AM
@continuezero - the only problem would be him becoming superpowerful. I hope it doesn't happen. Unless SHIELD perfected the extremis 'serum'.
RexDartEskimoSpy - 6/3/2013, 11:38 AM
ABC/Disney came to Whedon with the idea for a SHIELD series, Question.
epitaz - 6/3/2013, 12:08 PM
Just a shot in the dark but I think he's Patriot ( Eli Bradley ). You know the part in the trailer when he's in a diner or something and the girl mentions S.H.I.E.L.D. and he says something along the lines of "you think I should get a shield?" Patriot was also the grandson of Isaiah Bradley, the Black Captain America so there's sort of this Avengers type of tie in.
