EDITORIAL: 343 Industries Is Ruining The Halo Franchise

Yeah, another one of Saint's crazy Halo rants... But this time, I'm taking it from the chat room to the Editorial section. Hop in your Warthog (or is it Puma?) and hit that jump to read!

Okay, so, I just recently saw the Halo: Forward Unto Dawn article here on CBM and needless to say, I had sort of a meltdown. Anybody who knows me knows the loathing and disgust I have for Call of Duty, and therefore why I have such distaste for Halo 4. I left a pretty lengthy comment on that article. It's pretty much an editorial in itself. So, some other users said it might be a good idea to actually post it as an editorial.

Basically, my point here is: 343 Industries is ruining the Halo franchise. The two games they already "developed" (Halo Anniversary and Halo 4) are abominations to the Halo franchise.

343 had ONE JOB to do with Halo Anniversary: Updated graphics and updated multiplayer... and they COULDN'T EVEN GET THAT RIGHT! The game was ALREADY MADE TEN YEARS AGO! How can you [frick] it up that much!?

I understand all the coding and stuff that has to go into a video game, there would be no way to use the original code and therefore it can'r be the same game to the T... but that's what 343 claimed they did! They made a huuuuuge deal about using "the original code" to make Halo Anniversary. If they actually had, why the [frick] are there so many glitches? And I'm not talkin the fun bugs we all used to see in Halo CE, those are still purposefully left there. I'm talkin about the gameplay-impairing bugs! Most notably: Co-op over Xbox Live. And I also understand Xbox Live was not around during the original game and there was no code in Halo CE for Live, but 343 also made a huge [frick]in deal about co-op over Live... If you're going to introduce a feature, make sure it WORKS.

And don't get me started about the damn Title Update for Halo Reach. The Title Update was designed to optimize Halo Reach's multiplayer to closer match Halo CE's multiplayer. This decision is actually a smart one, but it was not implemented successfully... It was implemented SHITILY! One of the main aspects of the TU was to remove the reticule bloom on the weapons in Anniversary gametypes, to match the experience from ten years ago... they never even implemented that feature. And, that was THE WHOLE POINT of the TU! That one feature! Also, player speed and jump height/gravity was adjusted to "match Halo CE's multiplayer movement", or, it was supposed to be. They made the players walk too fast, and increased the jump gravity, making the player fall down to the ground too quickly. Halo CE had some hangtime to their jumps, the Anniversary gametype had the opposite of CE's settings. Again, 343 had ONE [frick]ING JOB!

Yes, the HD remaster looks spectacular. Yes, the remade multiplayer maps are incredible as well... but 343 didn't even have a hand in those. 343 hired Sabre Interactive to remake the campaign from scratch in HD. Then after some fiddling, Sabre told 343 "You know, with our new engine, we can have the original game code playing underneath the HD graphics layer. And as a result of the original game playing underneath, you could switch back and forth between the original graphics and the new ones". So that great feature that all you give 343 so much credit for wasn't even a friggin thought out of their minds. And the multiplayer maps? Made by Certain Affinity. 343 can't even make their own multiplayer maps! The last 2 maps packs for Halo Reach and all the maps for Halo 4 are done by Certain Affinity! So you can't even give 343 credit for that! At a convention, someone from the audience asked 343 if they would ever make a Flood multiplayer map with tentacles flying everywhere and other Flood effects on the map during gameplay. A 343 guy said "that would be too complex and complicated to do, so I wouldn't plan on seeing it in the near future." After that, a Certain Affinity guy spoke up and said "Give us your money and we'll do it."

[frick]ing Halo 4. Where the [frick] do I start? Lets start with the obvious: Halo 4 = CoD. That's right, the Halo franchise has now come down with CoD-syndrome. When developers don't want to take risks in making a unique multiplayer experience in fear of losing customers, they do the one and only logical thing: Copy everything from CoD. I first read about CoD-syndrome in an article a while back saying 'now that 343 has taken over, we hope Halo 4 doesn't fall under CoD-syndrome', and I remember thinking to myself "They wouldn't do that, this is HALO!" ....I was so naive. 343 has taken almost every aspect from CoD and implemented it into Halo 4.

Spec Ops = Spartan Ops
CoD Points = Spartan Points
Perks = Specializations
Care Package = Ordinance
Classes = Loadouts
Killstreaks
Kill cams
Ranking system
Weapon unlock system
Control Scheme

IT'S ALL [frick]ING CALL OF DUTY!!!!
Dammit 343, if I wanted to play CoD, I'd buy CoD!
What is your malfunction?! Why are you so tard-assed?

Another retarded move by 343: "We're in control of the franchise now, so let's REDESIGN EVERYTHING for the [frick] of it!" Every single thing is redesigned. Why? Well, their claim for Master Chief's redesign is that it's because they wanted to make his suit more "realistic" and "practical" and "functional".

I'm sorry, but how the [frick] does bigger, blockier and bulkier equal more "practical and functional"? You'd think that'd add too much weight and too many hindrances of movement "realistically".

Now Cortana, I have no [frick]ing idea what they were thinking here. Cortana throughout Halo 1-3 was a semi-transparent holographic display. In Halo 4... she's a solid form holographic object? I just... I don't... It's not...

Again, EVERYTHING has been redesigned. For no apparent reason or explanation. And before you use that 'Well Bungie redesigned stuff too!' argument, let me just say ahead of time: you're wrong. You are. Bungie never "redesigned" anything, they only made graphical updates to accommodate the upgrades in graphical technology over the years. But they always stuck close to the original design. And 343 redesigning everything makes everything feel alienated. Imagine you've been playing the franchise for the past 11 years, staying close to a certain style and type. You've grown accustomed to this, you feel close to it, attached even. Now all of a sudden, it's ripped from under you and CoD is thrown in your face. How the [frick] would you feel about that?

The legendary Marty O'Donnell has composed some brilliant and powerful scores for Halo over the years. The Halo theme is iconic among the gaming community, regardless if you like Halo or not. Well, dear Marty works exclusively for Bungie. He will not be returning for Halo 4. Which I have no problem with, because certainly 343 isn't dumb enough to not use the Halo theme, right? ....right? -_-

"Because we will never be able to come close to Marty's legendary score, we're not even going to try to. So, we're making an all new score for Halo 4" - Frank O'Connor, Franchise Director.

Okay, on to the novels! My favorite part! have you ever read The Fall of Reach? What about First Strike? Or any of the original novels before 343 assraped the franchise? Okay, well, if you did, you need to buy the revised editions released this year... Oh, you didn't know about those? Yeah, 343 revised all the novels to make them fit in more to their universe storyline. Fall of Reach has 28 or 29 added-in pages, as well as revisions to some of the stuff you already read. So if your playing Halo 4 and see something contradicting what you had read in the past, I suggest picking up the revised editions to see how they [frick]ed you over.

Complete graphic redesign, all new score, storyline chages, CoD multiplayer... Shit, this isn't even Halo anymore.

Now to preemptively answer your retarded rebuttles:

"But Saint! There's a lot of ex-Bungie employees working at 343 now!"
No sir, you are wrong again. Out of the entire 343 employee roster, only THREE of them previously worked at Bungie in their time.

"Okay Saint, but one of them is the franchise director, Frank O'Connor! And he's been there since the beginning oh Halo!"
Wrong again, dearest. Frankie didn't join Bungie til Halo 2 was already in the middle of development.

"But he was there til 343 started making Halo!"
Sorry buddy, he left Bungie after development Halo 3. So all in all, Frankie only has 3 years of time at Bungie under his belt...

"But Saint! Change is good!"
Hey, I'm all for change... but do we need to change into Call of Duty?

"But Sainty! Frank O'Connor himself said Halo 4 won't be like CoD!"
He did?! Well I'll be... If he said it, then that HAS to make it true!

"Saint, your forgetting that Steve Downes and Jen Taylor are returning to voice Chief and Cortana :-P"
Oh, okay. That'll make the game good... just like Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart made X-Men 3 good, right?

"BUNGIE SUX! 343 4EVRRR!!11!!"
Please, don't speak. You literally lower the IQ of the whole room when you do.

Got anymore? Wake me when you need me, cause we're just getting started.

Nice article, Sainty. COD has been ruining a lot of franchises, simply because everyone and their mother's wants to copy their formula. Do i care for Halo, no.. cause I have a PS3, but as a gamer, I know exactly how you feel.
Deadmensriot - 10/5/2012, 2:53 PM
Let me tell ya.. that game that isn't out so no one could have played the full campaign must be crap cause of you know.... Call of duty...
Moriarty117 - 10/5/2012, 2:54 PM
Wow, you are seriously emotionally invested. It's going to be just fine, mam. Take a deep breath.

If you really don't like the direction Halo is going, don't buy Halo 4. It's that simple. Keep playing Reach. They don't make games to please Halo fundamentalists, just to make money.

You can't blame 343 for trying to expand their target market by appealing to COD fans, it's a smart move. The amount of people who would be enticed by these changes is higher than the number that would leave the franchise.
CapeWing - 10/5/2012, 3:02 PM
Why don't we all just step back for a second, shut or mouths and open our eyes to the bigger picture. NONE of us on here work for Microsoft or 343 Industries, what right or inside track of intel do we have to bash on their work right now? Is the game out yet? No, so stopping talking, stop running your mouths and just simply wait. Did it ever occur to you foolish idiots that this is...what at least 75% of this creative team is new, and only a handful of people from Bungie stayed? Did anyone think of that? No of course not, why bother when it's easier to run your mouth on something you don't have ALL the facts on. NONE of us do, the damn game isn't out till next month. But I agree with the idea of, if you don't like it, don't buy it, period. If you insist on bashing on it, email 343 Industries directly, believe it or not they will write back. All I've been hearing on this website is people like this, and Griff "Shit this" or "F-ing 343 is stupid, blah blah blah".....really? Shut Up already and just realize this. It's a new team, new story line, new graphics and a new direction. Don't like it, then don't buy it. Stopping shooting your mouth off.
GLprime2814 - 10/5/2012, 3:04 PM
Who cares.
Ha1frican - 10/5/2012, 3:05 PM
As a huge Halo player and CoD convert (although Blops 2 looks to be a return to form but that is a long conversation for another article) im on board with almost everything i've seen from 343 and enjoyed Halo Anniversary and you are an idiot if ypu think it will be anything like CoD. That's like seeing thhaeter mode in Blops and screaming that CoD is turning into Halo. Grab some lotion for your butthurt and ill be rubbin sack on some n00bs when i pick up my LE copy of Halo 4. My only issue is they [frick]ed up the Recon controls
TankD - 10/5/2012, 3:08 PM
Dude seriously you sound like a biased hater. Get over it whiny little girl.
CapeWing - 10/5/2012, 3:11 PM
@Ha1frican right on man! 343 Industries I think is the breath of fresh air the series needs! The Anniversary edition of Halo as good, could have been a tiny bit better, but it was good! If you got Xbox Live let me know and I'll give ya my gamer tag
Sparrowsabre7 - 10/5/2012, 3:14 PM
Does this really belong on CBM? I know Halo has comics but does this need to be on main, when it's wholly to do with the game series, wouldn't this be better placed on gamefaqs or something?
Gulon180 - 10/5/2012, 3:15 PM
i have a hard time remembering the name of this site from time to time, thank goodness for articles such as this one.
CapeWing - 10/5/2012, 3:15 PM
Actually griff, get your shit straight, same armor in 2 and 3. the only reason for the tweak in 4 is to make him a little bit more realistic as far as the armor tech is concerned. And the only reason why it was changed from 1 to 2 was because it was banged up and needed the upgrade, so again get your shit straight. And like I said before, it's a new creative team, my god man stop whinning like a child. Don't buy if you don't like it.

I actually got a 360 primarily for Halo because im a ps3 user originally
Ha1frican - 10/5/2012, 3:19 PM
@IncredibleChuck lmao
Jefferys - 10/5/2012, 3:20 PM
I can't believe I wasted my time reading that.
Just like comic books and movies, when someone new jumps onto the bandwagon of a particular franchise, they always like placing their feel; their variation. No one wants to play the same game over again, and 343 are placing their mark on the territory. I don't know if you've entirely realised but 343 Industry is a group of developers who really love the Halo games and want to work on them. I'm fairly sure the series is in capable hands. And the books being revised is fine, its hard to entirely have a book series based in an ever expanding universe… unless written by the lead writer (Mass Effect for instance).

And with the whole map creating thing, there are plenty of reasons why they got a different company to produce the maps. First off, time limit. Instead of spending wasteless time on creating maps and resources, they'd rather have their team working on the campaign and designing all the other little things. Secondly, coding issues. Not all people are whizz fizzes at developing code for maps, while Bungie was certainly good at it, there were some maps you could see they shot out for just being there. Bungie even got super lazy on Reach by having the maps in campaign and vice versa. Lastly, it's definitely clearer to understand that 343 are horrible at making multiplayer maps. They made a Firefight and two multiplayer maps and they were horrendous. 343 aren't map creators, they're story developers. Certain Affinity made the last map pack and it wasn't hard to tell their map coding was superior to 343.

The Halo franchise is in capable hands. Just chill man and like what Moriarty117 said:
"It's going to be just fine, *man. Take a deep breath."
TimelessUnknown - 10/5/2012, 3:22 PM
Complaining for the sake of complaining, gotta love it.
CapeWing - 10/5/2012, 3:22 PM
SaintSpidey I did read it twice actually, and as valid as you think your points might be, you're still an idiot. I'll boil it donwn to lamest terms so as to not hurt your brain. Don't like it, don't buy it.

What it all comes down to if I have to continue to reiterate my point. We have a new creative team, a new creative director, new engine, new design tech and a newer version of the mo-cap system. So what if the game doesn't appeal to everyone, what game does anymore?

Furthermore, what game franchise out there...in fact name me 5 franchises out there that are totally original. Can anyone here do that? I sure as hell can't. One way or another someone, somewhere out there in the gaming world is going to come close but not directly copy some other company's idea.

Deal with the simple fact, if you do not like what you are seeing of Halo 4 thus far, or the movie then don't watch it, don't buy it. And if the the multi-player battles are getting screwed over to you, then guess what? Don't play. If you feel it's too C.O.D then go play C.O.D. There you go, problem solved.
ZombieOverEasy - 10/5/2012, 3:22 PM
Some of those things you're claiming they ripped from COD have been a part of Halo's Multi-player since Halo 3.

I admire your passion, but I think your article is a bit much. Halo Anniversary was excellent, IMO. I loved it. I actually like some of the redesign work they've done.

You can't just pump out the same thing, they have to make some changes to set their Halo apart from Bungie's or else they end up copy+pasting what's come before. You complain about developers not taking risks, then damn them for all the risks they're taking. You need to make up your mind as to where you stand on taking risks.

I will say I'm sad to see the memorable score leave Halo, but I'm going to give it a chance.

We all have differing opinions and I respect yours.

I don't play games, but I do hate it when someone F's up a good thing.
Moakynubs - 10/5/2012, 3:37 PM
I was always under the impression that the Halo games were pretty generic shooters.. not that those can't be fun.
Ghostfire - 10/5/2012, 3:37 PM
@Gambit
LMFAO!! You're my idol, now!
Egan - 10/5/2012, 3:37 PM
Really? An angry rant from a child and the only argument is that the multiplayer is like COD now? Does it play like COD? Oh wait you don't know because it isn't out yet? Oh no they added classes! COD is the only game ever to use classes in a game!(That is sarcasm by the way, I hope you know that)

Oh it has some new designs? A company updates the graphics and looks of a game and it's a bad thing? [frick] moving forward with something.

The Halo series is a sub par FPS genre which was only successful for introducing console kids to great FPS games(An argument can be made that Goldeneye did it first) and the best thing that came out of Halo is Red Vs Blue. This article still comes across as the rage of a 13 year old boy who has not felt the love of a woman's touch.
Preowned95 - 10/5/2012, 3:40 PM
Dude you need to chill... if you don'y like what 343 are doing don't buy it. Anyways Halo Anniversary was always a side project; practiclly most of 343's attention was based on Halo 4 which I can fully understand. Making a great game from scratch requires time and attention, so while 343 is making Halo 4 for us, Saber and Certin affinity are helping out with anniversary. So how is that a bad thing? Certain affinity has helped out with bungie and 343 before hand so why should this make any difference? Halo anniversary turned out to be a kick ass game anyway, and so what about the co-op? I play it a lot of the time with my friends and we don't find any problems. Halo anniversary has been thus far a great way to pass the time until Halo 4 comes out. Plus it brought back a lot of memories which I believe was the whole point in making it for the tenth anniversary.

Oh and with COD and Halo... Games borrow from other games, it ain't uncommon. COD borrowed from Halo and vice versa. It didn't make them that leaa of a good game if anything it improved it... and as long as Halo still plays like Halo. Halo Still has theater, it has forge, it has a campaign that in itself is a work of art and i'm sure Halo 4's campaign will be no different. Plus at least Halo has a varied weapons system which allows you to use different strategies.Unlinke COD which requires no skill and incorperates a one shot one kill system... at least 343 hasn't copied that aspect eh? Oh and there are multiple controller settings, if you don't like the way they are change them... its the whole point of putting them there in the first place.

And last thing... im sure if Bungie had a grahics engine like the one that Halo 4 is supporting... they would redeign a lot of the things there too. look at the transistion between Halo 1 and 2... the chief looks relitivly different from those games, reason they probs didn't change it through halo 2 to halo 3 was to be good to the continuity. oh yeah and look at the change from Halo 3 to Halo: Reach. the weapon designs for example are completly different to those in the older games... Anyways i find it a shame that you're not looking forward to Halo 4. It looks to be such an incredible game and i'm sure that 343 can exceed my expectations.
jessepostal - 10/5/2012, 3:46 PM
@soto, It's not an exclusive, xbox got it too they just changed the name to resident evil 6 archives. And all of those games besides 6 have been out forever
GoILL - 10/5/2012, 3:56 PM
360 and PS3 user here, will probably pick up Halo 4 eventually.
jessepostal - 10/5/2012, 3:57 PM
Your right, my bad, didn't relise they were different. Xbox def got the better deal, code veronica x, 4 and 5 are worth more than 1,2,3, and 4. Cost wise. The first 3 are 5 bucks each on psn. And im a ps3
DEATHbyEXILE - 10/5/2012, 4:15 PM
Godzilla - 10/5/2012, 4:27 PM

jessepostal - 10/5/2012, 4:28 PM
@soto, there both great collections. Code veronica x is one of the best imo and 5 is fun and def the biggest of the bunch. Obviously 1, 2 and 3 are great too, they started it all, and the 1st one is prob my fav, but they are dated, im 29 and im saying this, imagine what the younger kids are gonna say about them. Money and quality wise its sad to say xbox wins the resi debate. Especially because the psn versions of 1,2 and 3 are changed. The directors cut of 1 has a different soundtrack than the original directors cut, not as creepy, along with other changes.
TrevT2 - 10/5/2012, 4:38 PM
Ok So Pretty Much This Whole Article is You Just Whining About How Halo 4 Isn't Gonna Be an Exact Clone of Halo 3?? O_o.. You Haven't Played the Game. Therefore You Have No Idea how it's Going To Play. And Have no Clue if it's Good or Not. Just Cause A Game has Some of the Same Features as COD Doesn't Mean Anything. And You're Whole Complaint About the Visual Changes to Everything is a Joke, Halo 4 Looks Freaking Amazing!! It's a Huge Graphical Leap From Halo 3, And i Would Say almost Everything that 343 Changed Looks Better Than Previous Games. So Like i Said, If You Want to Play the Same Halo Game and Never Have Any Changes Just Re-Play The Original Trilogy Till The End of Time And Quit Crying!! ;]
TrevT2 - 10/5/2012, 4:55 PM
@SaintSpidey: Lol Really I Missed the Whole Point Huh?. So You're Article Wasn't Implying That You Dislike Every Change to the New Trilogy??, Cause From What i Read it Seems Like You Hate Everything 343 is Doing and Want To Play The Same Halo Games from 10 Years Ago
Jollem - 10/5/2012, 5:03 PM
halo died after the first one for me

cod is garbage, battlefield is better

i believe a wise man(gusto) once said; "ps3 is for the ladies" :)
GetsugaTensho22 - 10/5/2012, 8:30 PM
Halo sucks ass anyways. Turned from a good-ish sci-fi shooter into a Horror game with the zombie Flood.
Mass Effect beats it in every way.
CPBuff22 - 10/5/2012, 8:40 PM
Halo CE was Iconic. Halo 2 was the first real beloved online multiplayer game on a console. Halo 3 was a good conclusion to a trilogy. Halo ODST was a interesting take on the military aspect of the universe. Halo Reach Sucked! I agree with a lot that has been said and honestly miss the days of spending hours and hours winning team deathmatch games with our firing a single shot. It was more about skill and actual tactics. Not so much any more.
