Odin "Runs" the Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Asgardian All-Father has a larger role in Marvel movies than most fans expected; will this revelation lend hits to the inclusion of all the cosmic artifacts we've seen?

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Thor director Kenneth Branagh reveals that Anthony Hopkins character, Odin, "runs the universe." This seems to be a deviation from the mythology set up in the comics, but can lead to solid continuity amongst the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As we've seen (or heard) in the recent clips of both Captain America and Thor footage shown at Comic Con, several key cosmic artifacts are being introduced into the film-verse: The Casket of Ancient Winters, the Cosmic Cube (or "Tesseract") and the Infinity Gauntlet and Sword.

It appears that Odin collects these items (along with many more that have yet to be revealed) and stores them in different areas of the universe for safekeeping. The role each play in their respective films, as well as the ensemble film The Avengers, has yet to be discerned.

* FYI: For those wondering what a Tesseract is, it is simply geometrical term for the four dimensional analog of a cube

Uh... so that means he DOESN'T die in Thor. For anyone that was wondering. But unfortunitelly... i guess it also means that no other cosmic being that is actually more powerful than Odin... actually exists in the Marvel filmverse. Meh.
ClaireLannister2016 - 7/30/2010, 8:03 AM
Run ODIN RUN! ehehe ;)
MassExecutions - 7/30/2010, 8:03 AM
Fine with me, although I think they may be exaggerating. In a later film lets see Odin defeated at the hands of Thanos just to demonstrate what a bad@$$ he is!
MassExecutions - 7/30/2010, 8:08 AM
@Teabag - Good question. Wish we had a real one to use against them.
TheHulk63 - 7/30/2010, 8:10 AM
Good Find Multi ... looking forward to your interview with the prop creator!
marvel72 - 7/30/2010, 8:13 AM
@ massexecutions that would be amazing to see on screen.
i think things are going to get quite intresting over the next few years.
maybe marvel have plans for a thanos quest movie.
i would love to see annhilation movie.
GUNSMITH - 7/30/2010, 8:13 AM
MAYBE HE HAS THE ULTIMATE NULIFIER AND USES IT AS A LIGHTER WHEN HE WANTS TO SMOKE A FAT ONE.
thunderforce - 7/30/2010, 8:14 AM
well i hope odin is one of the most powerful beings in the mcu that just makes me happy when i think how much more powerful thor will be when he inherits the odin force . Since the son eventually surpasses the all father thor is going to be heavy duty badass.
ROBBEATZZZ - 7/30/2010, 8:24 AM
MULTI..YOUR IN A ZONE DUDE! KEEP THE GOOD STUFF COMIN...

WE SEEN SOME GREAT PICS AND FOOTAGE FROM THOR..BUT WE ALL KNOW THERE IS LOTS THATS NOT GONNA BE REVEALED UNTIL THE MOVIE IS RELEASED NEXT YEAR...ALSO CAP WILL BE HEAVEY WITH CONNECTIONS AND EASTER EGGS!..CANT WAIT!
dnno1 - 7/30/2010, 8:25 AM
Yeah, from the look of that picture, Odin runs the Marvel Universe and Heckle and Jeckyl are his advisers.
MassExecutions - 7/30/2010, 8:28 AM
@GUNSMITH - That's Chuck Norris.

I vote for 1)Thanos/Infinity Gauntlet 2)Secret Wars 3)Celestials 4) Skrull/Kree War 5)Annihilation

In roughly that order.

THE EYE OF AGAMOTTO?!?! Go Dr. Strange!

@teabag - They just need to tell Del Toro to take the Darkhold and all the darker Supernatural characters and run with it.
scurvydog - 7/30/2010, 8:29 AM
Hmmm...Quasar's Nega-Bands,perhaps? The SATAN CLAW?!? The Zodiac Key? ROM's Scanalyzer? STORMBREAKER? So many artifacts to choose from....
OdinsBeard - 7/30/2010, 8:32 AM
Shaman@ OR does it just just set up for a better reveal when we learn of the celestials? or those who sit above in shadow? i think so! :)
Brashlight - 7/30/2010, 8:33 AM
This will be interesting, It already seems like these movies wont really follow the overall marvel universe. More of a new universe with similarities to the regular origins and back stories with the characters not changing much in their personalities. we will se how this plays out. the movies look SICK but i know i will have moments where i am trying desperately to match the story of the movie with the comic and that doesn't seem like that will be realistic. but lets be honest how often do stories change in the comic universe so i don't have a problem with the movies taking their own direction. makes for a more exciting story, as long as they don't change the important details i am good! Can't Wait!!!

Just so everyone knows The Asgard Gods are not IMMORTAL, JUST LONG LIVED. NOt like the Olympians Gods whom are Immortal. Interested twist to things thou they way they are going.
ROMACK - 7/30/2010, 8:37 AM
I think in the trailer Odin was entering Odinsleep, and all of his power and authority passed to Loki because Thor was banished. I don't think he died.
loganoneil - 7/30/2010, 8:37 AM
I think this article's premise is a bit misleading - Odin 'collects' these cosmic artifacts (much like an art collector collects rare pieces of art), it didn't say he CREATED them. This says nothing about his power or ranking in the Marvel-verse, just that he likes 'pretty things'. No contradiction so far...
Godzillafart - 7/30/2010, 8:41 AM
Looks great.
HelaGood - 7/30/2010, 8:43 AM
i confirm ROMACK 's comment

Odin is in Odinsleep
MassExecutions - 7/30/2010, 8:43 AM
@ROMACK - I hope so.

@loganoneil - As I said, I think they are exaggerating, but it does sound like Odin is trying to keep things organized and prevent cosmic disaster.
CaptainAmerica - 7/30/2010, 8:43 AM
"runs the universe" did you not read that part?
OdinsBeard - 7/30/2010, 8:43 AM
Teabag@ Agamotto would be sick!! i threw out a theory on one of CBD's editorials that he would also have some, if not all, of the Ten Rings. and that "Thor" takes place before iron man and TIH. so Odin has all of these artifacts locked up in a vault (tho Poni says he hides them across the universe so that would make more sense) and when Loki opens the vault to use The Destroyer (or whoever does use it) all of these things get let out and spread across the ... "nine realms" i guess lol - would open up endless doors for these movies down the line.

it just rubs me the wrong way that the Infinity Gauntlet and all of it's gems are assembled and sitting in a closet somewhere lol - at least that's what it seemed like when the guy who made it gave an interview.
OdinsBeard - 7/30/2010, 8:47 AM
helagood@ droppin' knowledge!
Shaman - 7/30/2010, 8:47 AM
OdinsBeard & loganoneil- I sure hope so! :)

Wait a min if odin was the most powerful why did he make the destroyer armor .

@MultiPurposePoni Could it be the "Eye of Thundera"? :)
Destroyer14 - 7/30/2010, 8:52 AM
Very interesting.
Brashlight - 7/30/2010, 8:52 AM
thunderforce@ im guessing that was Loki's doing, but thats only an assumption. i mean the trailer makes it look like Loki becomes ruler of Asgard in Odins absence
Brashlight - 7/30/2010, 8:53 AM
Kryptonian@ Thundercats HOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Watcher - 7/30/2010, 8:55 AM
WOW! Cool! That's great! Excellent theory!!

I just hope the big guy doesn't buy the farm in Thor! I want to see more of him in the future!
Hawksblueyes - 7/30/2010, 8:56 AM
Awesome news. This entire Marvel Universe on screen seems to be setting itself up in a much bigger way than any of us anticipated. When I first learned about it, I just thought it meant we could see Luke Cage and Captain America cross paths briefly in a film. What they are actually doing is extraordinary.
Acerimmer1 - 7/30/2010, 8:58 AM
If Odin runs the MU and collects powerful artifacts in order to keep them out of the hands of the wrong people then how did he manage to loose the cosmic cube and how did the Red Skull recover it when he seemingly could not.

Also are these versions of the Cube and Gauntlet only fractionally as powerful as the comic book versions? What prevents Odin from using them for good (he is basically good)? Is it a star fleet directive or perhaps he fears a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space time continuum.

Also since Odin is basically good he is not well placed to run the MU there would need to be some opposing force as you see with Death/Eternity Chaos/Order etc. Odin is not a completely impartial character.

Brashlight - 7/30/2010, 9:00 AM
Hawkslueyes@ I know, its really exciting the level of depth they are taking this. I can't wait to see what else is in store, i mean nothing with this level of depth or production value has ever been tried with something as well established as the Marvel universe. My nerd senses are tingling with joy!!!
Acerimmer1 - 7/30/2010, 9:03 AM
"it just rub me the wrong way that the Infinity Gauntlet and all of it's gems are assembled and sitting in a closet somewhere lol."

Yeah me to. I'm also worried Marvel is going to shoot it's load too early, they have 50 years of reboots ahead of them for gods sake. Don't need to be getting into Infinity gauntlets just yet.

Cosmic cube in Cap, yeah I thinks it's a great idea. Not sure why Odin has it though.
ROBBEATZZZ - 7/30/2010, 9:13 AM
@ ODINSBEARD..SOME KOOL IDEAS..ONLY ISSUE I HAVE IS THAT THE IDEA OF THOR TAKING PLACE BEFORE IRONMAN..ONLY BECAUSE SOMETIME DURING IRONMAN 2 COULSON LEAVES TO NEW MEXICO WHERE THEY FIND THE HAMMER..BUT MAYBE PARTS OF THOR THAT TAKES PLACE DURING IRONMAN OR BEFORE ITS SHOWN ON FILM
MassExecutions - 7/30/2010, 9:15 AM
@teabag - I know, I know. But I want him to make Mountains of Madness, too, so I guess I can get over it.
Acerimmer1 - 7/30/2010, 9:17 AM
@Teabag

But had you considered that with the cosmic cube in the movies the Infinity gauntlet is redundant anyway. It's essentially the same thing only it looks different, as a plot device it's the same, as a weapon it's the same.

Seems like Easter egg overkill to me.

Plus come on. How can Loki be in that room and still get beat by Thor, the only possible explanation is Loki doesn't really want to win. Unless these artifacts are no more than a shadow of their comic book counterparts.
bropous - 7/30/2010, 9:18 AM
Question:

Is that Poni's head sticking out right over the left armrest of Odin's throne? I can hear Quesada screaming now...

;- )

Awesome articles, man. VERY much appreciated.

So: The greensquare that Loki is getting ready to purloin: Is THAT the Cosmic Cube?
OdinsBeard - 7/30/2010, 9:19 AM
ROBBEATZ@ ooooh yeahhh good point..... the only thing i have to counter that is maybe there is some sort of time differential between Asgard and Earth.

OR

When Odin banishes Thor he keeps Miljonir (spl? idc) and throws it in that vault also - hell it is an all powerful weapon, it belongs with all of that stuff we are mentioning. so Thor would be banished on earth for a little while before his hammer comes down(going with my theory- when everything is set loose). and then he's like "oh yeah, here we go i can be Thor again.."
Nemesys - 7/30/2010, 9:23 AM
I wonder if the Marvel Cinematic Universe will ever touch on the Greek Mythology side since Hercules was one of Thor's priciple rivals in the comics. And he was an Avenger at one time. Hmmm.....
Acerimmer1 - 7/30/2010, 9:26 AM
Can't do Zeus and say Odin is above Zeus.
bropous - 7/30/2010, 9:26 AM
Aye, Spock. The Aesir (Asgardian gods) were MORTAL, thugh extremely long-lived (and retained their youthful vigor through Idunn's Golden Apples). Another interesting twist on Norse mythology was that the Aesir always had that dreadful morning of apocalypse waiting for them at the end of their roads, Ragnarokk, when the black, silent rooster of Hel would crow and the bounds of Hel burst open to release Loki in his ship of damned souls made of the fingernails and toenails of the dead to wage war on the Aesir.

And, moreover, the Aesir were always fated to fall, almost to a man, in Ragnarokk.

Norse mythology has always been my absolute favorite.

Anyone who wants a really good layout on Norse Mythology might find an old book at their library that hooked me as a kid: "D'Aulaire's Norse Gods and Giants". Although a child's book, it does bring a lot of the myths of the Eddas to life for a modern audience.
Acerimmer1 - 7/30/2010, 9:27 AM
@Teabag

Maybe not but you can have too many in Odin's Treasure Room like 1 being 1 too many and 2 being 2 too many.
bropous - 7/30/2010, 9:28 AM
SirPrize: Is that clip from a Swedish movie called "Jack Frost" that they used once on Mystery Science 3000? Has the look of "The Day the Earth Froze" or "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad" written ALL over it!
Acerimmer1 - 7/30/2010, 9:30 AM
Lets face it anyway why retain the destroyer and the other items if you didn't intend to use them. Just use the cube or the gauntlet to destroy them.
Acerimmer1 - 7/30/2010, 9:32 AM
Does Odin have this vault in mythology or something?
MassExecutions - 7/30/2010, 9:36 AM
@Nemesys - It MUST. Thor and Hercules must appear on screen together!

@teabag - That's right.

As I recall, the Cube allows the user to change reality with a thought, BUT it doesn't make you omniscient, so you basically have to work with what's in front of you.

Now the GAUNTLET pretty much makes you omniscient, so you can alter the whole universe at once, like Thanos did. It should DEFINITELY not be assembled. Those gems should be scattered to the farthest corners of the universe.
Watcher - 7/30/2010, 9:41 AM
@ massEx: did you... say.... "Mountains of Madness" ...

As in the epic Lovecraft story?
