Dark Knight Opening Sales Records Beat By Modern Warfare 2!

That's right, the newest installment to the Call of Duty franchise is beating sales records left and right, including The Dark Knight's!
Activision Blizzard announced today that Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues to shatter theatrical box office and video game sales records for five-day worldwide sell through in dollars. The biggest entertainment launch in history set a new worldwide estimated five-day sell-through record of approximately $550 million, according to internal Activision estimates.

Modern Warfare 2's launch beat all previous first-and five-day entertainment industry box office, book and video game sell-through records*:
  • The largest reported five-day opening worldwide box office gross figures, held by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($394 million)
  • The largest reported five-day opening domestic box office gross figures, held by The Dark Knight ($203.8 million)
  • The largest reported five-day worldwide video game sales record, previously held by Grand Theft Auto IV (6 million units, $500 million)
  • The largest reported opening first-day domestic box office gross figures, held by The Dark Knight ($66.4 million)
  • The largest reported first-day book sales in dollars, held by Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows ($220 million)
  • The largest reported first-day worldwide video game sales record, previously held by Grand Theft Auto IV (3.6 million units, $310 million)
Modern Warfare 2's blast radius also extends to Xbox LIVE, in which the blockbuster title's epic release established the following new standards, according to Microsoft:
  • More than 5.2 million multiplayer hours were logged playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the first day alone.
  • More than 2.2 million unique gamers played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in one day on November 10th. A new one-day record for Xbox LIVE.
  • More than 11 million achievements were unlocked on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the first day.
"In just five days of sell through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop culture phenomenon," said Robert Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc. "The title's success redefines entertainment as millions of consumers have chosen to play Modern Warfare 2 at unprecedented levels rather than engage in other forms of media."

Despite the success of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Activision Blizzard remains cautious about the U.S. and global economy as well as other variables that can affect industry fundamentals and our own performance, including consumer spending which remains a significant concern.

Modern Warfare 2 is rated "M" (Mature) by the ESRB for Blood, Drug Reference, Intense Violence and Language.

superdog - 11/18/2009, 9:38 AM
Seriously, what's the big deal about these games?

And how can you accurately compare a video game's profit to a movie's?
MultiPurposePoni - 11/18/2009, 9:50 AM
Been playing this at my mates most nights this week! I love it!
TheAnswer - 11/18/2009, 9:58 AM
Are you really tryin' to play this card?

Dark Knight sold for $10 a ticket at movie theaters

Call of Duty sold for $60 a game - on three different home systems.

Do the math!

"Blizzard announced today that Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues to shatter theatrical box office and video game sales records for five-day worldwide sell through in dollars."

No, Duh! You sold your games for 6x the price of a movie ticket - so obviously you are gonna make more money. People like how number statistics look on paper, and they know the majority of people won't bother to actually do the math and test their numbers.
BLACKWINGS17 - 11/18/2009, 9:59 AM
Multi@ God knows :)

BLACKWINGS@ it realy offends you dont it lol
teabag - 11/18/2009, 10:00 AM
idk, but i'm gonna get this game now! i usually wait till its a greatest hits for 20 bucks lol but i'll make an exception
droopy1317 - 11/18/2009, 10:00 AM
@Blackwings: My thoughts exactly! They should have compared units sold, not the money they've made.

@teabag: It costs $60?!? Holy hell, I can't believe people pay so much for a video game!
MultiPurposePoni - 11/18/2009, 10:01 AM
I hate to be a downer, but these are sales numbers , not volume. So a game selling for $60-$80 a game can easily outsell a movie ($10/ticket) or a book ($25/book). I will give credit where credit is due and it is outselling grand theft, and looks to be an amazing game, but I hate misleading stats like this. Show us the units sold and then you can boast about your accomplishments.
Roughhouse - 11/18/2009, 10:02 AM
This shouldn't be a surprise for anyone, and video game sales shouldn't be compared to movie ticket sales (at least not on this site).
There are a lot of "experts" who think that over the next 10-15 years video games will take over the entertainment industry. Movies will be much further down the list. The reason being, is that the quality of the visuals are getting better and better, the characters are portrayed by real actors, and it's an emmersive, interactive experience for the audience.
And they make a crap-load of money...

hescian - 11/18/2009, 10:03 AM
@ MultiPurposePoni

There isn't really anything great about these games, and they don't offer anything special from any other FPS. The only thing different is what you are aiming at. Nearly half (not all) the fan-base of these games are casual gamers who only play FPS - so they flow with the hype and the popular gaming trends. I'm not saying it's a bad game - but I am saying that anybody who has played other games in other genres couldn't come close to making a case that it's the best game ever.
BLACKWINGS17 - 11/18/2009, 10:06 AM
The game is awesome ive clocked up 3 days and 10hrs worth since last Tuesday cant stop playing it don't know how they are gonna beat this game don't think they could make it any better!!!
delpoi - 11/18/2009, 10:07 AM
Multi@ £60 thats like a night down the pub!! i know which one id rather do :)

What amazes me more is how sales statistics is remotely interesting lol
teabag - 11/18/2009, 10:07 AM
@Blackwings: That's what I figured, it looks just like EVERY other shooting game out there. Blah

@teabag: A night at the pub or a bj from the local tranny!

Sale stats not interesting at all! I smell a secret assignment coming along. . .

*cough* 808 *cough*
MultiPurposePoni - 11/18/2009, 10:09 AM
Multi@ Im a fiver short for the tranny..that dudes expensive :P

Maybe i should do a article on his sales stats :)
teabag - 11/18/2009, 10:13 AM
Fantastic game!
ClintEastwood - 11/18/2009, 10:13 AM
BLACKWINGS17,

Weak argument. Which is an easier sell, $10 or $60?

Yeah, I thought so. Without even taking into account that you have to dish a couple of hundreds if you don't own already video game system; it's quite the accomplishment.
soforizo - 11/18/2009, 10:13 AM
Multi - BJs from the local tranny! Is Tea giving out mouth-hugs again at the pub? Wahoo!
SirPrize - 11/18/2009, 10:14 AM
Thank gawd for GameStop for used games and the local pub for used Tea. LMAO.
SirPrize - 11/18/2009, 10:15 AM
I'm a big fan of COD4:MW so I appreciate this news, Nate. However, I have already had a big debate over this very topic with a friend, so I feel compelled to add that these numbers--and this announcement--are a tool of marketing and do not necessarily represent the popularity of the game versus The Dark Knight.

Consider...

Modern Warfare 2 sold $310 million worldwide in 24 hours compared with The Dark Knight taking in $67 million domestically in 24 hours. Not even taking into account the worldwide/global aspect of it, you have to consider the price of the video game compared with the price of a single movie ticket to see which is really more popular...

Assuming (conservatively) that each MW2 game is $60, that means 5.25 million people bought the game the opening day of its release. Now, assuming (again, conservatively) that each TDK ticket is $10, that means 6.7 million bought a ticket to the movie the opening day of its release.

The Dark Knight still wins!
Brent Sprecher - 11/18/2009, 10:17 AM
Go TDK! But I love shooters...
Phinehas - 11/18/2009, 10:19 AM
@SP: Mouth-hug. . the right way to start your morning :)

@Phin: Why not go to the firing range then?
MultiPurposePoni - 11/18/2009, 10:19 AM
@ Multi - Amen. Nothing better than having a spit shined pork knob before you go to work.

Firing range = Epic Win
Nothing more gratifying than unloading a few clips at the FR.

InFamouslyCool - 11/18/2009, 10:22 AM
I do go to the range to maintain my accuracy, but the targets don't look human enough.
Phinehas - 11/18/2009, 10:23 AM
@ Tea - Hahaha You sure gotta pertty mouth.

Targets don't look human enough!!!!!
Run for yo lives.
SirPrize - 11/18/2009, 10:23 AM
@Phin: You're going to the wrong range, my friend. Did you know that the military just concluded a 5 year study on the effects of combat related video games to soldiers? The study showed that the video games caused the soldier's muscle memories drastically changing to adapt to the 'video game world'. They were even forgetting fundamental marksmanship.

Basically, combat-themed video games, in general, are detrimental to those that have learned or are trying to learn real world combat tactics.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/18/2009, 10:24 AM
SP@ It looks better if you have $60 lol :P
teabag - 11/18/2009, 10:24 AM

You're such a sweet talker. Drinks on me tonight.

LOL! Right. Gotta go find those Islamic training camps!
Phinehas - 11/18/2009, 10:26 AM
@multi - based on your pic, I'm assuming you're a military man (good on you), and as such, you've seen war/violence in real life. Because of that experience, you probably can't enjoy these types of games like other people would. Just like real race car drivers wouldn't get a kick out of Forza 3. For most people, these games are a fantasy...
hescian - 11/18/2009, 10:29 AM

Ummmmmm... Yeah; because in the end investors are more concerned on how many copies/tickets are sold versus how much money it makes. Sureeeeeeee... maybe you could suggest that they sell the next TDK first in the $1 theater instead. I'm sure they'll sell even more tickets that way and keep on winning.

Get real, there's no need to put down Call of Duty to make TDK the greatest 'winner' in all of entertainment. It wasn't the greatest winner moviewise, let alone in all of entertainment.
soforizo - 11/18/2009, 10:30 AM

Memory muscle control should be different when you step outside with your sidearm or rifle. I know I can tell the difference between vibration of a controller and a recoil of 30.06 or 308.

Bandwidth Exceeded for Photobucket is the new bonus level for MW2? That is freaking tight.
SirPrize - 11/18/2009, 10:44 AM
This doesn't surprise me at all. Obviously it cost more, but it also cost LESS to make than it did TDK. So, their profit margin is far far greater than that of TDK.

It's amazing how much videogames today are making. The people that own the companies that make these games are banking big time.

Macksimus - 11/18/2009, 10:45 AM
mmmmmm tight :)
teabag - 11/18/2009, 10:47 AM
On a side note...

Have any of you guys heard about the level of Modern Warfare 2 where you have to kill civilians? It's pretty damn graphic; so much so that Austrailia is banning it from its country.

...youtube it.
Macksimus - 11/18/2009, 10:47 AM
you cant compare Modern Warfare 2 a video game to a live action movie The Dark Knight. when Modern Warfare turn into a live action movie lets see if it really beats The Dark Knight.

I never really hopped on the Modern Warfare band wagon, but I can appreciate it. It's an amazing game, beautiful graphics, design, textures, sound, everything is damn gorgeous about this game. That's why it's a big deal Multi. It being $60, yeah it's pricey, so is a $3 comic book if you think about it, but also think about all the work that goes into the making of these games, the designs, the redesigns, the hundreds of textures, tests, animation, glitches to be fixed, it's worth every penny in my opinion.
Stumblin - 11/18/2009, 10:54 AM
@teabag: I don't have a girlfriend, I just play with my Wii

@Stumblin: To each his own I guess. I'd rather buy 10 graphic novels for $60 instead. I think it's kind of silly spending that much on one game, especially since most people beat it in around 4 days.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/18/2009, 10:55 AM
Why Macksimus? Australlia is pro-freedom!
Phinehas - 11/18/2009, 10:57 AM
@Phinehas

Maybe, but I can't blame them. That level is wrong on every level, especially after what happened in Fort Hood recently. I know there are plently of violent games out there, but this one takes it to a whole other level IMO. There are unarmed civilians begging you not to shoot them, but you have to in order to beat a game.

However, apparently, there is an option to skip that level, but it still disturbs me that there are 10 year old kids out there playing that level thinking it is just fun and games.

Macksimus - 11/18/2009, 11:04 AM
@Macks: I'm with you there. No reason to include a level like that on a game. Shooting unarmed civilians? Bad form
MultiPurposePoni - 11/18/2009, 11:08 AM
The majority of my post was from Activision/Blizzard's press release, so yes, you have to take it with a grain of salt.

That being said, for those that haven't played the game it is AMAZING. The single player campaign is awesome, and the multiplayer kicks butt.

As far as the airport level goes, it is graphic, disturbing, all of that, but keep a couple of things in mind:

1. You're prompted no less than 3 times to skip it.

2. You don't actually have to shoot any civilians, you just can't shoot the terrorist cell that you're undercover with, or they'll kill you and the level fails. I actually had a friend who played it and looked at the ceiling the whole time because it was too much for him...

3. It's VITAL to the plot of the story. I don't want to spoil it, but this level kicks off EVERYTHING that happens in the game, culminating in the battle moving to US soil.

Batman rules, but I've already gotten probably 16 hours of fun out of the game, with many more to come... If you break it down by hours spent enjoying the product, Modern Warfare 2 wins hands down... If that doesn't kick up a storm of flaming, I don't know what will :o)
NateBest - 11/18/2009, 11:10 AM
BTW, since we're on the "no reason to include stuff in a game" topic, what about killing prostitutes and strippers in a game? What about drunk-driving? The airport level is disturbing, but it's for the overall plot of the game, NOT for sh*ts & giggles...

War isn't pretty, or polite, especially when you're talking about terrorists. I think they do a good job of getting that message across.
NateBest - 11/18/2009, 11:13 AM
Personaly i wouldnt care if it beat TDK...its a good movie but it holds no meaning in my life to get touchy about :)
teabag - 11/18/2009, 11:14 AM
@Nate: Don't get me wrong, I have issues with GTA as well.

But just like we don't send 12 year-olds to war, we should not facilitate their interaction with the horrible things that are a part of war.

@teabag: I've got something you'll want to get touchy about
MultiPurposePoni - 11/18/2009, 11:17 AM
God i hate FPSs. They're just not for me. Can't wait for Darksiders :))
Shaman - 11/18/2009, 11:21 AM
Multi@ im trying to get a grip on what your saying lol

seriously tho i agree.....is all the over the top violence and stuff realy needed in order to produce a good game? i doubt it :)
teabag - 11/18/2009, 11:22 AM
@Multi The game's rated "M", and *shouldn't* be played by kids, but we know how ratings go... How many times as a kid did we sneak into Rated "R" movies, just to see HellRaisers or Friday the 13th... I was glad to see that they were checking age at Wal-Mart when I purchased it, but it's too easy to get around. Parents just need to be more involved with what they're kids are doing, watching and playing...

Like I said, the level is essential to the games plot, but I'm glad they included the option to skip (I made sure my kids didn't play it).
NateBest - 11/18/2009, 11:23 AM
Nathan: Great article man! Modern Warfare 2 is an amazing game and although i was disappointed to finish it so quickly, it was one hell of an experience that Im now enjoying playing a second time! Online is addictive as hell and great fun! :)

Macksimus: Well, as this game is clearly not made for children or anyone under the age of 18 then you cant exactly blame them for putting that level in there - its the parents fault if thy allow a child of that age to play a game like this! You might as well remove all violence from 18+ movies just in case someone young sees it!

MULTI: I dont think thats its any sillier paying $60 for a game (well £40 for me in the UK) that it is in paying $5 for a comic book (£2.65 for me) that can be read in 10mins! If you enjoy something its worth the money! :)
JoshW - 11/18/2009, 11:26 AM
@Nate: When it comes to comparing movies and video games, I've only seen one main difference. A movie isn't interactive. It's like a roller coaster, sit back and enjoy the ride. If there's a scene where terrorists kill unarmed civilians, it's hard to watch. In a video game, YOU are making the decision to let the game go forward by executing civilians. I would think that, psychologically, it affects people differently when they have to perform an action like that as opposed to watching it happen.

@josh: Very true. That's why I haven't bought single comics for a few years now. I read them online and buy TPB collections that I want off of Ebay for dirt cheap. I usually only pay around $10.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/18/2009, 11:29 AM

@Shaman Darksiders does look awesome! They released some new videos a while back and it's got me excited again :o)
NateBest - 11/18/2009, 11:32 AM
meh

And BTW I agree with Blackwing & Brent. The only thing comparing sales between a movie and video game proves is that the game is ridiculously over priced.
This is something we all knew already.
DarthMulder - 11/18/2009, 11:33 AM
MULTI: Damn, I wish I was more patient, lol! TPB graphic novels are normally somewhere between £10 - £15 in the UK or sometimes even under £10 depending where you buy them. I just hate the wait so I buy them monthly despite the little bit extra it costs! :P

Nathan: I completely agree with your points about the airport level. I played it but I found it uncomfortable which IMO is probably what they were going for. That level was an integral part of the story and very much put me in the shoes of the character I was playing like no other game ever has!

teabag: Lol, I dont drink! ;)
JoshW - 11/18/2009, 11:34 AM
@josh: Delayed gratification is a sign of maturity, my friend.

In this instance, it also saves you alot of money.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/18/2009, 11:37 AM
@Nate

Of course, there are plenty of other games out there that are just as violent and disturbing.

My problem is with videogame developers in general. These game developers have considerable influence over the youth of this world, and therefore they have a responsibility to them as well. They need to know when to stop pushing the limits with their "art." Movies are just as violent in all the sense, but movies do not give the audience any control of the outcome like games do.

...and yes, that part of the game might be an important part of the game's overall plot, but did they really have to give you control of the situation in order to convey it's meaning? They could have just played a quick cut-scene, instead.

Also, I don't need a videogame to get the "message" across that war/terrorism is brutal and disgusting. I think the events of 9-11 and the two current wars clearly convey that message.

Macksimus - 11/18/2009, 11:38 AM
Nate- Yeah!!! I hadn't seen much about it until a few days ago were i saw Joe Mad himself explaining the gameplay. It looked awesome!!! They really did their homework in mixing the best points of many great games ;)

LuV1138 - 11/18/2009, 11:44 AM
MULTI: Even so, I'd still buy them monthly despite the price because I happen to prefer owning the original books rather than a reprint in a graphic novel! I find it a whole lot more enjoyable holding a copy of Amazing Spider-Man #600 in my hands rather than as part of a book! :)
JoshW - 11/18/2009, 11:44 AM
@multi,Tea,Brent and all oldtimers
1.MW2 is papa of TDK,HP,MJ,Dan brown e.t.c and the numbers prove it.
2.If u r blind that doesn't mean the whole world is!!
3. Maths=TDk cost=>devlopment+marketting=$250 mill
earning 1000 mill dollars
so revenue =1000-250=$750 mill in 12 months
MW2=devlopment+marketting=>less than $100 mill
earning $600 mill that too in 5 days.
the holiday season is yet to come, dlc yet to be released..

so MW2 is the new king of entertainment industry till MW3 arrives.

Go get a MW2 copy,go get a life

@Josh

I agree that it is the responsibility of the parents to keep their kids away from games like this, but is this game really OK for adults? Yeah, it has a rating of "M" for mature, but there are plenty of adults out there who are anything but mature. Just because you are legally an adult, it doesn't mean you ARE an adult.

Hell, I'm more worried about the 18 year olds playing this game than I am about the kids. At least kids can't walk into a store and buy a gun.

Violence in games like this is unacceptable for anyone IMO.
Macksimus - 11/18/2009, 11:51 AM
Josh@ lmao..i wonder what Horse tranquilizer is in the bottom of her glass :P

Macksimus@ Get rid of the guns and you wont have to worry about the adults either lol:P
teabag - 11/18/2009, 11:52 AM
Macksimus: I'm 19 and I can honestly say that after playing this game or any other violent game I've never felt any compulsion to kill, harm or attack anyone! I shot people in that level but once I finished it I didnt want to head on into town and shoot someone! IMO, someone has to already have something wrong in their head if they feel the need to make fantasy into reality to that extent! The makers of these games shouldnt have to censore themselves punishing the many for the sake of the demented few! :)

you can't really compare the two. if it cost 60 bucks to see the dark knight, then it would have slaughtered the sales of this game.

it is an awesome game though!
CorndogBurglar - 11/18/2009, 11:58 AM
Phin@ lmao...gun crime in this country is practicly none exsistent...wonder why!?! we just like to stab people lol
teabag - 11/18/2009, 11:58 AM
Well, as long as people only get stabbed to death. That's better!
Phinehas - 11/18/2009, 12:03 PM
Anyway, that airport level takes up about 10mins of 6hrs - the rest is quality to this extent! :D

JoshW - 11/18/2009, 12:03 PM
Yahoo already posted this news when the game first came out and I feel the same now as I did then. You can't compare a game with a movie.

I agree tea. Englishmen are more gentlemanly than American "gangstas". Gangstas are cowards because they can't face someone face to face. They either have to be with their posse of 6 beatin' up one guy or shoot them from a distance. I think the world should take a cue from feudal Japan and everyone should have swords. Sure it would be potentially messier, but there would be honor.
Tobuttica - 11/18/2009, 12:06 PM
if video games aren't your thing, then i understand why you woldn't give a damn about this game. but these games are badass, so much so that the call of duty franchise has been around for years and years. people that don't play video games can complain about how they look exactly the same all they want, but game genres are like movie genres. you don't stop seeing horror movies because they're all about people dying. the genres might be similar, but its what the individual franchise brings to the genre that adds the uniqueness.
CorndogBurglar - 11/18/2009, 12:11 PM
CD@ i wouldnt watch a Horror movie that lasted 5 days tho lol...i have nothing against video games and people who play them...i just dont understand the apeal thats all :P
teabag - 11/18/2009, 12:12 PM
If we're going to dive into the realm of "responsibility to the youth" and not showing disturbing things to people, then I guess we have to start censoring:

Novels
Movies
Comics
DVDs
Music
and anything else you can think of that someone might see, read or hear

Do game developers have any more influence over kids, and people in general, than any of the above mediums?

I can honestly say that I've seen much more disturbing things in comics and movies than the airport terminal in Modern Warfare 2... Saving Private Ryan ring a bell, or Braveheart?

I'd like to hear from someone that's played the game and thinks that the level shouldn't have been included...

@Macksimus I agree partly on the "don't need a game to remind me", but let's be honest. We, as people, are a forgetful bunch. If something's not right in front of us, we forget about it...

The whole "violence in video games" debate reminds me of the "outlaw Dungeons & Dragons" because "it's evil" and "kids will kill their parents"... I've yet to see any hard eveidence that video games, or Dungeons & Dragons, leads to violent kids...

Oh, that reminds me, we need to outlaw and censor professional wrestling too... ;o)
NateBest - 11/18/2009, 12:15 PM
gettin the game for my b-day well someone is gettin me it, 21 on the 5th of December whoo-hoo!!! Anyway the game looks cool but ya cant compare them and bullsize, if you think that getting a game that keeps you in doors and spenidng your time stressing over a game rather than having fun with it then i think it's you who need the life kid...get a girlfriend man.
Ryden - 11/18/2009, 12:17 PM
I enjoyed Modern Warfare so its good to hear that the game rocks, however regardless of whether it sold more units or cost more I find it irrelevant to compare it with movies. Thats like saying Phelps is better than Bolt, all they had to say was that its beaten GTA.

The appeal of games is the interactive experience and the hours of entertainment they get even though games are real pricey these days. With regards to the civilian thing I guess they could of done it differently, I guess the tolerance of violence is up to each individual regardless of movies being passive people make active choices to indulge in movies like Saw, Hostel, Tarantino movies etc.
breakUbatman - 11/18/2009, 12:17 PM
BTW I gree with the whole "you can't compare video game sales to movie sales", but anymore everyone, including movies and books, are touting the "Entertainment Industry Records"... If I remember right, we have Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince (Novel) to thank for getting the whole thing started :o|
NateBest - 11/18/2009, 12:21 PM
Alil something for everyone.....

teabag - 11/18/2009, 12:26 PM
fcuk sakes - you don't have to sh00t anyone in that airport level. grow up. and a 60 dollar game is too much? I remember when N64 games were 80 plus dollars. what the fcuk is with everyone? this game is a masterpiece. suck it and grow up.
Keven - 11/18/2009, 12:28 PM
@Corndog,

So I guess TDK is now the Chuck Norris of entertainment?

P.S. Call of Duty deserves the accolades. Heck videogames has had great days like these for quite a while; but some see it as little sister of entertainment. But she's grown now and the old sis has nothing on it.

Too bad i'm not an investor, I'd be sitting pretty right now.
soforizo - 11/18/2009, 12:30 PM
Wow! Check out that .357!
Phinehas - 11/18/2009, 12:31 PM

Phin@ lol..id cock that :P

SP@ out going or receiving? :P
teabag - 11/18/2009, 12:35 PM
Damn straight, Nathan. You cant censor one thing without censoring another. It would be hypocritical. Macksimus there have been far more violent depictions of carnage in both movies and comic books. Rape, torture, cannibalism... its all there. Ever read the Preacher comics? Watched the Hills Have Eyes or Hostel? While you are right vgames give you control over your character, making it more easy to vicariously hurt people though your character, people are stimulated by different things. Some people are inspired by music, others comics, others movies, and others games. And even if these things were tamed, the violent people will look to art or create their own demented forms of inspiration (look at Ed Gein or Dahmer). When it comes down to it, its the evil in the person, not some other medium, that inspires violence. Censorship is only treating the wound, not the infection itself. Its an ignorant and short-sighted approach to a bigger, deeper problem with society.
Shadowelfz - 11/18/2009, 12:37 PM

SirPrize - 11/18/2009, 12:37 PM
yes because nobody has ever played video games as an adult. They didn't even exist until like 2 or 3 years ago right?

Love the pics of the ladies above.
I am a console & PC gamer, Mostly MMO'S & FIGHTING Games. The point of games that they are cheap form of entertainment in the long run. Even thou it would put u back a few $100's. As for game developers they do have some responsebility, just as some stated above, parents have to be involved.
This is why parents need to be more envolved, I know Iam. Gene X rules.

As far as the Islamic statements go, u just can't go around classifying certain peoples based off there religion etc. I can tell u for one. I am Muslim & if u meet me u would see that i one of the most DIVERSE MUSLIMS around i think.

Spock, whoa. That was a disturbing video. That kid was possessed!
Phinehas - 11/18/2009, 1:05 PM
@joshw24 Assassin's Creed 2 is on my list, along with Left 4 Dead 2, Dragon Age Origins, Need For Speed SHIFT, and a dozen other games that I don't have the time or money to play :o)

That doesn't even take into account the games yet to be released... Mass Effect 2, Dante's Inferno, Battlefield Bad Company 2... Man, the list goes on and on...
NateBest - 11/18/2009, 1:05 PM
@Spock My kids showed me this video. I love what he does with the remote :o)

I think World of Warcraft should be outlawed... ;o)
NateBest - 11/18/2009, 1:06 PM
well think of it like this.. next gen games like this cost $30 million - $35 million... take about 2-3 years to make depending on the size of the team.. 2 years Im sure for Activision. A block buster movie like Batman cost about $200 million to make... so Batman has made a 500% increase world wide on what it cost to make to date... Call of Duty MW2 has made what is that... 1500% increase in just 5 days? Crazy!!

WarNoodle - 11/18/2009, 1:12 PM
Nathan: There arent really any more games out this year I want apart from the latest Ratchet & Clank game which is already out...but there are quite a few next year on my list - MAG, Bioshock 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2, God of War III, Heavy Rain, Red Dead Revolver...guess I'm gonna have to take up shoplifting with all those coming out, lol! ;D
JoshW - 11/18/2009, 1:15 PM
Hilarious video Spock!!! :) What a loser that guy is!
JoshW - 11/18/2009, 1:21 PM
It’s good to see quality games do so well. It makes people want to invest, which keeps game artists like myself employed. Big game companies spend so much money trying to figure out how to make more money, market research, gimmicks and all sorts of crap to get people to buy their games. It’s really pretty simple; you put out a polished quality product that’s fun and relatively easy to play with a hint of addictiveness. Gears and Modern Warfare both stick to this formula. To (Epic and Infinity Ward Keep) up the great work guys!! You give our industry HOPE =D
thatiscrazy - 11/18/2009, 1:33 PM
When you play games like MW2, Halo, Mass Effect etc. It's like watching a block buster action movie except YOU can interact with it. Yes shooting weapons in real life is fun but you aren't exactly in Africa with predator drones flying overhead and firing your grenade launcher at an militarized truck.

The production value of recent games are just as extensive as a movie. Voice Acting, Graphic/Character/Level design, plot is just as important, technical application. Games have evolved a long way since the day of pong or donkey kong.

Take a scene from Batman:Arkham Asylum. When batman stood over a ridge overlooking the asylum. The moon draped in the background, it blankets the courtyard with a soft white glow, while lights emanating from the windows illuminate the building with an warm orangish look. Gotham in the distance just to the side. Apartments and skyscrapers break the horizon into uneven jaggs, their acute flourescent interior lighting punctuate the darkness like stars. Batman stood defiant and resolved. His cape, with a hint of green reflects the plant overgrowth surrounding Batman, flutters in the breeze.

That was from just one scene in the game. It's ART as well as entertainment, for which can be said about a movie. The graphics now enable games to be as visually complex but also let players interact with them. Pretty environments or amazing action sequences are now no longer part of a cutscene. It is brought to life by a player.

So why do people like games? Because it can be as serious as a novel but also be as casual and action packed as a Michael Bay film. It's not just about shooting stuff, but where and how the action takes place. Sorry about the long post but as a gamer I need to make this point. I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say.
rushx5 - 11/18/2009, 1:42 PM
for the people talking about violence in video games: sorry if i don't want to play a game where you give flowers to your girlfriend.
CorndogBurglar - 11/18/2009, 1:46 PM
its like any other media. violence is going to be there, it depends on the people watching it to be able to determine reality from fiction.
CorndogBurglar - 11/18/2009, 1:47 PM
i actually love computer games and i have a ps3 and wii!!

@multi@ no offence to you or anyone else but to say that mw2 "looks just like EVERY other shooting game out there. Blah" is just ignorant especially if you dont play games!!!! its like ppl who dont read comics but say that they are for kids! :o(
FAD - 11/18/2009, 1:56 PM
I think the violence in games helps people with pent up rage. They get to take out their aggressions on computer generated AI instead of that one douchebag that looked at him wrong at school. Politicians blame games when kids shoot up schools, but I think it's a problem with faulty parenting. Kids that are neglected are going to do things that get them noticed. Suicide, or killing other people. So I say let them play the games. The only thing is that parents should play it with them and do a little bonding.
Tobuttica - 11/18/2009, 2:03 PM
If u like that here is part 2, same kid. His parents should really get involved.

Spock - 11/18/2009, 2:05 PM
"He keeps betraying me. Yell at him." LOL
NateBest - 11/18/2009, 2:17 PM
Spock: "I will kill you and eat your first born child!!!!" - what a [frick]ing mental case! Hilarious video though...i bet the guy "betraying" him is laughing his ass off! :D

Fair points FAD! :)
JoshW - 11/18/2009, 2:18 PM
Spock, no kidding! There is a total breakdown of parental discipline. Did you catch all the toys he has laying around? Nothing is seemingly withheld from him and look at his behavior. Curious as to whether the parents are shirking their duties of properly loving him by showering on him gifts instead.

What a tool!
Phinehas - 11/18/2009, 2:19 PM
@FAD: Hun, I have a Wii and a PS3 and I play video games with my kids every weekend. Plus I love Rockband when I'm drinking. . . so pretty much every other night. That doesn't change the fact that I think MW2 looks like every other shooting game out there right now. Why is that wrong of me to say?

Your analogy doesn't apply since I do play video games. And I never said video games were only for kids; I don't know where you came up with that.

A more accurate analogy would be a Miller Batman fan saying Morrison's run looks silly. Tracking?

@Tobuttica: I DEFINITELY blame the parents first and foremost. Just look at that kid in the videos.

But your point about people taking out their aggression on a video game I can't stand behind. That's called passive aggressive behavior; and it's not a good thing to have. Look at how antisocial that kid in the videos is behaving. That lack of interpersonal communication causes major problems as kids grow older.

MultiPurposePoni - 11/18/2009, 2:29 PM
Something to say about the offensive level in MW2. People were saying that you're "forced" to shoot innocent people to beat the game. This is false. When you turn on the game, it gives you the option to skip the level altogether. So they're not forcing it on anybody.

@Josh - Picked up AC2 on the first day and I am LOVING it! :) My game of the year so far. :)
Runefyst - 11/18/2009, 2:31 PM
Runefyst: Its not out here until tomorrow but I cant wait! Although I loved MW:2, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is my GOTY so far! :)
JoshW - 11/18/2009, 2:39 PM
@Josh - Yeah, I don't have a PS3 yet, but I hear that Uncharted 2 is something else.

No, if you liked the first Assassin's Creed, I guarantee you'll love this one, it's better in pretty much every way. The other game I'm looking to get this season is New Super Mario Bros Wii, looks perfectly nostalgic. :D
Runefyst - 11/18/2009, 2:42 PM
@multi@ its just that you made comments like....

"Seriously, what's the big deal about these games?"
"It costs $60?!? Holy hell, I can't believe people pay so much for a video game!"

which made me think you dont play games which i dont think was an unfair assumption as it definitely seems that way from your comments!! and i never said that you called games childish i was just making a point that you saying games you dont play all look the same is like someone saying that comic books are for kids even tho they dont read them!!!!

and you dont need to put your comment in bold or talk DOWN to me to try to correct my "analogy" because im not dull ffs!
FAD - 11/18/2009, 2:49 PM
Runefyst: I enjoyed the first game a lot (though it got very repetitive in places) but I heard that they've sorted all those faults out with this one! And trust me dude, Uncharted 2 is worth buying a PS3 for! :)

JoshW - 11/18/2009, 2:50 PM
This whole article is not valid at all. you cant compare a video gam eto a movie ticket price wise unless you are comparing units not to mention those also include RENTAL SALES the first day as well. TDK is still the king well 2nd to titanic.
Set2Fallfirst - 11/18/2009, 2:51 PM
@Josh I just bought a ps3.....yea its amazing. i got Uncharted one never played it. I also got Infamous so far its ok does it get better? and Batman Arkham Asylum of course.
Set2Fallfirst - 11/18/2009, 2:53 PM

I agree with MPP's comments to Tobuttica in part. If left to video games for endless hours, you get tools like this kid. If the games are given as rewards in moderation (like sweets) then I think they can be positive motivators.
Phinehas - 11/18/2009, 2:53 PM
why are there 139 responses to this article?
MsKyle08 - 11/18/2009, 2:54 PM
@FAD: Sorry about the typeface, I just meant to put your name is bold. Don't take offense to it.

I know you're new here, so you're probably not used to the way I chat with people. I'm notorious for correcting peoples metaphors, grammatical errors and analogies. I can't help it, I have a degree in English Lit.

I'm truly surprised that people would pay $60 for one game considering I bought the full Rockband 2 kit for $50. The pricing seems a bit uneven to me.

Regarding the game, I think that after watching most of the game-play videos out there I can make an educated decision whether it impresses me or not. It just doesn't.

@Set: My buddy just sent me Arkham Asylum for PS3 :) Did you get your package yet?

@Phin: That's exactly how it works with my kids. It's a reward, not a necessity. It's a shame that alot of kids have NO social skills whatsoever and video games are a large contributing factor.

Whatever happened to. . . playing outside? My parents had to threaten me nightly to leave my friends and go inside the house.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/18/2009, 3:00 PM
MPP-Exactly!
Phinehas - 11/18/2009, 3:04 PM
i'm with you FAD -

Multi's just running with his newfound glorious power and likes to use big words. Maybe by bolding them it's like he's talking in a stern manner or something.

And playing Rock Band with kids doesn't designate being a gamer in any way. Owning a Wii? Doesn't count either. Everybody has one of those dust collectors.

And if you think that sh!t looks like every other shooter out there you're not paying attention. 'Average' gamers even understand that it's a huge step up.

Keven - 11/18/2009, 3:05 PM
Multi how many kids do you have?
MsKyle08 - 11/18/2009, 3:06 PM
