Superman is overdue for a visual update. The poor guy has been stuck in the same SuperSuit for 72 years it is time for a change...

When Superman was first created there were no standards to follow. He was the start and his survival over all these decades have made him a permanent part of our psyches. A new modern costume would not hurt that. What could really harm the love we have for the Man of Steel?

It is his original look!
He is the very symbol of the SuperHero silliness.
Batman & Wonder Woman have already been updated.
They have about a million costume designs to pick from.
Resistance is to be expected.

It is his original look!

Superman debuted in 1938 in Action Comics. The cover is well known to almost everyone and it was the beginning of what would become a legendary character. Since there were no models to follow they dressed him up like an acrobat. Put him in tights, add some shorts, a big cape and of course a large letter on his chest.

72 years! I think the guy deserves a new outfit after all this time.

The costume design was for children simple as that. If he is to be taken seriously as an adult Character then he needs to look the part. I am well aware of the symbolism of his outfit. I know what the yellow means and such. Symbolic elements are a part of every SuperHero uniform and they can be so in the new one for Superman.

He is the very symbol of SuperHero silliness.

If anybody sets out to mock the idea of SuperHeros what do they do? They dress someone in tights, add some boxer shorts, a cape and oh yeah a big letter on the chest. For every bit of love and respect Superman gets he also gets laughter. It is unfair to the Character to be the target of these insults and slights when a simple costume change would work. The icon of silly will never go away but at least it does not have to be directly attached to Superman.

Batman and Wonder Woman have already been updated

Batman has been evolving for some time. Each new change draws a bit of hatred and then is accepted. New outfits have helped to keep Batman accessible to modern audiences. Nobody picks up a Batman comic expecting to find the silliness of the original Batwoman days. Batman is a bad ass and everyone knows it.

And yes I admit Batman has done a lot with the shorts and tights look too. But he has also evolved with the times. When he moved into the movies we got some great costumes. They actually made Batman work in a live action movie. Burton did well but Nolan did even better with the look.

Wonder Woman's new look is undoubtedly in preparation for the new TV show. Rather than try to make the comic costume work onscreen they updated the look. Now the TV show can look exactly like the comic and still look good in live action. Somehow I feel this trend will continue.

These three represent the Holy Trinity of DC and the JLA. They also move among characters who have been created in much more recent days. The contrast between the different costumes is kinda stark. Comics are Art just like a movie and consistency of vision is important.

They have about a million costume designs to pick from.

Is there any Character that has been the subject of more design work? Since he has barely changed over all these years a whole lot of people have speculated on new looks. Almost every possible variation has been drawn by someone. In the comics themselves something on the order of what say 100+ costumes have been seen. Every Earth has a Superman and that is just the start.

Resistance is expected.

I know what Iconic means. I certainly know what it means to cling to something familiar and not wish for a change. When what you are talking about is some static object I understand. Superman is a living Character acting in today's world. He is not static.

Superman is trapped. Trapped in the past as a symbol with many powerful meanings. For some it is an echo of their childhood. For others a touchstone that never wavers. But I honestly feel that those emotions are not based on a suit. Superman is a real person to so many of us. He is what matter because of his actions, his words, and most importantly his deeds.

We hold him in high esteem. What I have always wanted is for the rest of the world to have as much respect for him as possible. Some people will never stop thinking of comics as kiddy books. But there is a huge chunk of the population which are tremendously affected by what they see. They will never read a comic. But they do go to the movies and they see the images all over the media and oh yeah cup cakes too.

I think that if you want Superman to be respected as a character for adults you have to get him out of that silly suit.

What I don't know is what heights Superman may reach if he were to join the 21st Century. But I do know that staying in the same costume is holding him, and comics, back. I am not offering a specific costume as my pick because that does not matter. There are a lot of different ways it could go and there are just a few examples at the bottom of this page.

S u m m a r y

It is a little amazing that we even need to have this conversation at all. Times change and characters like Superman have as well. He is not the same Man of Steel and his look should reflect that. DC has always been scared of the risk because all the backlash they have gotten in the past. Sadly this fear holds them back and has taken from from the top to almost the bottom of the Comics Industry. Marvel has what 75% of the market now? I have loved quite a number of DC titles for a lot of years but facts are facts.

Here is what as always struck me as simply wrong. Superman is probably the most respected SuperHero of all time. He is not the Ubermensch of Nietzsche he is a Paragon of Good. So powerful and yet so controlled. To me, to you who are reading these words, and to many others, Superman really means something special. There is respect, real honest respect, for a fictional Character. This is no small thing.

To everyone else... he is a joke.

A freaking Joke! Some of this is from his history and we cannot change that. But with a new look he could take a big step away from being a joke. That is why I think a new costume is needed. It is not because I am bored of Superman. It is certainly not because I think he is a joke...

It is because he has earned it.

You HAVE to keep the original symbol, cape and colors. You can get rid of the trunks and spitcurl but DON'T change those things.

A Kingdom Come style supes would be awesome.

This minus the trunks, and belt. Maybe darken the color scheme.

So basically this one without those weird side things.

That Kingdom Come style shield makes more sense as the Kryptonian symbol for hope.

I did not want to advocate a specific design but what I would like to see is simple. If you have to keep the big yellow shield then move it onto the cape.

A somewhat more subtle stylized S could work across his chest. But my main point is just something new and modern.

I would rather have the comics create designs that fit with live action than have it go the other way. Considering both of the biggies are owned my major Studios I think this is something to consider.

Minor Note: I was a little hard on DC. They are the second largest comics company after all. But I think their market share is less than 1/3 that of Marvel so my point was not wrong just a bit harsh.

I like the first of the 3 the best as there is no black (I hate black)& it looks like the modern day version. Plus I think Tom could pull that one off, haha. :)

supes is in desperate need of a new costume.although he doesn't need to upgrade his suits like batman, he must change for a while. every superhero has had a costume change in the past, but eventually got his original back. and it is a real shame they didn.t grasp the opportunity in the earth one graphic novel. it looks identical to the mainstream, whereas batman got a slightly changed one. at least we may get a new one in the reboot. because if you ask the average movigoer what he thinks of the costume, he will tell you it is silly. and it is. but that's what we love about superheroes. but c'mon...red UNDERwear OVER blue pants...

THIS!!! Looks Kryptonian, looks classic, looks modern, looks more like a uniform than a costume.

It works for me.

Personally I could do without the yellow in the S but still I like it quite a bit.

My main gripe with the classic costume is that it doesn't look Kryptonian. I think the only practical way to deal with his costume is to make it Kryptonian in design. The letter S, briefs, and a belt are too ordinary.

I like that argument. :)

I will have to remember it in case I have to do this again sometime.

I really don't understand the thought behind changing the suit. His suit has been changed more than once due to "the voice of the fans." You know what they found out? The louder voice of the fans who weren't bitching about his costume built to a roar.

No need to change something that most people have grown to love over the years just to please the few who think it looks goofy. If they do change it, what kind of long johns do you think would be an improvement over the ones he is currently wearing?

TheDarqueOne - 10/6/2010, 6:06 AM
Hmmm... Well I seemed to failed miserably here Hawks because I explained exactly what you are asking.

Fans will always cling to the familiar. So inside the Comics themselves I know DC has tried and failed to change Superman. However with films things are a little different. While a large percentage do know about comics most of those also know they are for kids. This whole modern Dark Knight Returns and more mature storylines means exactly nothing to the average person.

Comics are for kids.
Superman is kiddy character.
He even wears the traditional silly outfit.

I think he needs to change clothes to shed just a little bit of his baggage. People are very keyed to what they see. Change the look and you change the response to a fair degree. With some people it works exceedingly well.

A new look, a good film, and Superman finally gets the kind of respect I think he deserves.

I understood exactly what you were saying Darque. I believe I failed and didn't explain myself well enough.

This topic comes up every couple of years ( it has for the 41 I've been alive) by those who think that Superman is just outdated for some odd reason suit, theme, origin and so on. Usually enough hell is raised that DC does something about it, making changes they believe will please the fans.

What DC and the fans who are complaining fail to realise each and every time, is that for every one of the fans who want something done to make Superman respectable or bring him up to date, there are 20 that were completely happy with Superman and still believe he is respectable and awesome with no changes. No one will hear from these fans until you mess with the book they know and love, because they had no reason to bitch until someone screwed with their favorite hero, in hopes of bringing him up to their standards.

What I'm saying is those of you who want Superman revamped, updated, more stylish, are in the minority by far. No one believes it until you're voices get loud enough for something to be done. As soon as changes are made is when DC finds out time and time again, that they should have left well enough alone.

Also, this, like your other articles I have read, is a very well thought out, well written, thought provoking article. It just so happens that I don't agree with what you're saying. :)

No radical change is needed. The only problem dumb people have (general public) with the costume is the red "underwear". They make stupid comments like "why is the most powerful guy on the planet running around in red underwear laugh laugh harharhar"

Just to shut those idiots up I'm open to removing the red "underwear" but keeping everything else. Have him wear a cool looking red belt instead and in place of the "underwear" just have a continuation of the blue scheme of the main suit. I think I'd be fine with that but ideally, people would just grow up and accept him for what he is. A god among men. Darkseid wears a "skirt," doesn't make him less menacing (unless you're a dumbass average moviegoer)

@Hawks

I hope I did not come off as snappy. Sorry if I did. I realize that Superman comic Fans have always held onto the classic costume.

Although when I checked your Poll this place is only 2 to 1 against which is not bad at all. Thank you for the compliments and comments as always.

@patriaustism posted the costume i think has the most promise..All they have to do is return the S shield to the normal one and return the black background S shield to the original yellow and that picture you posted would be perfect...no "underwear" see.

@113

Generally I agree with your opinion of the General Public. However in this case they have it right. Superman was created for children 72 years ago. So when they see him and laugh they have a valid point.

@Everyone

I know I will never convince Comics Fans. They have always preferred to stick with the traditional look. However when you talk about CBM Fans things are a little different. For them it looks like the Traditionalists win by only 2 to 1. That is certainly significant but far below the numbers for DC readers.

Add in the General Public and I win. Just wanted to point that out. *grins*

This is a message to TheDarqueOne, I understand your perception of the characters suit and how you feel it needs to be updated, but what I think you failed to realize is the true intentional perception of the characters suit.
1st- when Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster in 1932 it was intended for all audiences, and when it first came out everyone read them, not just kids. It was intended by the creators to show how superman can have such power and yet have such control over his powers to use it for good and not for his own personal gratifications. Superman is selfless, honest, and overall tries to do the right thing, that can be applied to anyone, NOT JUST KIDS.

2nd- people who think superman's suit is goofy do not fully understand the vision the creators had when creating this characters suit, first they needed to make him look invincible, so they put him in a leotard to define his muscular attributes of his body to make him look strong and invulnerable, they did not want to show the attributes of his dick so they put a crotch-piece to hide what doesn't need to be seen. The cape is a symbol of a man who works outside the law like robin hood or zorro. It is also the blanket he was wrapped around by his parents and he wears it as a symbol of pride of his origins, and The S logo was his families crest. Why change something that makes so much sense? oh yeah because general public find it hard to believe that a real person would dress like that, BULLSHIT!!! wrestlers dress the same way for the same reason, to show their muscular attributes.

3rd- The reason batman got a reboot on his suit was because when people started taking superheroes more seriously they realized that batman is a mere human being, it would make no sense for a man to just wear tights and fight crime without any body protection but Superman's suit is made of kryptonian fibers that are virtually unbreakable in our atmosphere. Yeah I'm that much of a nerd, I'm not saying that change is not good, just don't change something so familiar to so many into something unrecognizable to us and to the character.

to me it doesn't matter what the general public thinks because if you anyalize the character and think about it real hard you know I'm right. I'm posting on a page that nobody has posted on in two years but I'm glad I made my point, to whoever might read this thank you for your time.
P.S.- kneel before Zod bitches... kneeeel!!!!!
