'Big Apple Comic Con' Goes Head-To-Head With 'New York Comic Con'

In 2010, the comic book gathering Big Apple Comic-Con will launch on the same day as the annual New York Comic-Con! What are we going to do?!!
Gareb Shamus, founder and current CEO of Wizard Entertainment, has pitted his recently purchase 'Big Apple Comic Con' gathering to launch on the same exact day as the annual comic book/film convention 'New York Comic Con.'

The strategy is perceived to be another attempt by Shamus to create an aggressive scheduling conflict for two entertainment arenas.

Reed Exhibitions, the leading organizer responsible for New York Comic Con wasn't shy on responding to the scheduling conflict created by Shamus.

"New York Comic Con is without question the second largest pop culture event in North America with a legitimate attendance of 77,000 last February," continued Lance Fensterman, Reed's Vice President, Publishing and Pop Culture and show manager of the New York events. "In 2010 the event will grow to occupy nearly the entire Javits Center - nearly 750,000 gross square feet and also host the New York Anime Fest.

"With 51 other open weekends on the calendar, it's a curious decision to run an event that aspires to be similar to NYCC on the exact same weekend, but that is a question that the creators, fans, and publishers will answer...Or already have with 60% of the enlarged NYCC already sold with still 12 months to go. I think this speaks for itself in terms of the support from all corners of the industry.

"New York Comic Con will continue to focus on what has allowed us to enjoy the success we have thus far - our fans, our guests and our exhibiting customers. We feel it is our responsibility to grow this industry through mainstream media coverage, new readers, new promotional opportunities, rights & licensing and above all else pleasing the fans, not to serve ourselves and our own agenda. With a continued focus on our guests, fans and exhibitors we have every expectation to grow New York Comic Con even larger and more exiting in 2010, regardless of who wishes to draft on that success."

Marvel and DC currently don't have any panels or features booked for the convention involving Shamus for his announced venture into the Anaheim convention in 2010, dubbed C2E2 by Reed Exhibitions. On the other hand, Marvel Entertainment and DC have signed on board to be included as a segment of the Reed Exhibitions. This is interesting because they were also absent from the lineup with the recent convention in Chicago by Shamus. Shamus is stern on he belief that he will generate enough support from both publishing houses eventually for the upcoming 2010 shows.

Whispers68: Whether or not this will cause some followers of the conventions to decide on being a part of one location over the other, only time will tell. I for one view competition in any form as a blessing.

Art Gallery first comic con second... but to be honest the New York Con would be much cooler cuz of the diversity of people there. The internationals would be sweet.... Just to get some International TRIM if nothing else :P But the weather in SanDiego would be pretty nice with all the beach bods.... but then again a raid with all the costumes in Central Park would be Epic.... ok i wanna go to the NY Con!

I've been to the last 2 NYCC's, and I'm planning on going to next year's, too.

Whispers68, normally I like competition, too. Unfortunately with something like this it will end up hurting not just the fans, but also the companies. I, as a comic book fan, have limited funds and time off from work. If its at a different time in the year not only can I get some time off of work, but I can also get some savings together and get a hotel room for the weekend. It being NYC hotels aren't exactly cheep in Manhattan. I can get a hotel farther, but that would mean a longer comute to and from the event. After hours of being there and bags full of swag and event shopping I don't want to add to my time to get some rest for the next day.

Its also bad for companies because in this economy they have to decide where to send supplies for swag and ads. Then you also have to decide where and when to send your stars for panels and screenings. Do you have more, or cut them in half? You also have to have twice as much crew to man boths at both places.

Either way, they are forcing people to split their time and money needlessly. If they wanted to go after them they should have set theirs for a week or two BEFORE NYCC so that they can take the winds out of their sails and break all of the news first. The ONLY reason that I can see FOR the "competition" is to needlessly try to put the others OUT of buisness. Will they have better prices for admission? How about for the things that they are selling? My bet is "no." This will only hurt the industry by hurting the fans and companies scheduled to be there.

With all of that having been said--------------------------------------------------

The reason I mentioned the competition swing is if Shamus wants to impose, then he better understand he must imposing on an event that has been the staple for comic book aficionados for quite some time now, so there has to be a purpose that will benefit the consumer. Perhaps the addition of his convention will bring the best out of NY Comic Con or himself...in other words, it should generate enough arousal for the event for anyone familiar with comic books/films. That's for the sake of argument Shamus could mention if he's doing this for competition and not to boost his ego as many are mentioning as his reason for the scheduling conflict.

On the other side of the coin, if this is just a measure of ones Id being in control, then it won't benefit anyone and perhaps not even Shamus. Marvel/DC didn't have panels or anything during his feature in Chicago so I'm wondering why he feels this notion of scheduling his comic con on the same day will do anyone justice.

I don't feel those loyal or familiar with NY Comic Con would take the leap of choosing Big Apple's Comic Con over something being sponsored by companies they're acquainted with (NY Comic Con). The companies involved with NY Comic Con won't make the leap as well if the incentive isn't present for supporting Shamus. If there's a way they (establishments) can allow resources to be present in both comic conventions and yet come out satisfied, a company will do what's best for its company.

I see this like anything else in history...one beer company turned into hundreds. One computer manufacturer turned into dozens. Competition eventually sorts itself out, but I definitely understand your point and can respect your opinion

apparently the advance sales for the Big Apple Comic Con are through the roof
Whispers68 - 10/17/2009, 9:04 AM
Gareb owns Wizard magazine, the best selling comic supplement. He's promoting the Big Apple like nobody's business. Looks like he wants to take over the world, and hopefull steal business from NYCC. Bring it down far enough and he can buy it.
Tobuttica - 10/17/2009, 10:27 AM
me and my girlfriend flew up to NY last year for NYCC. it was the best thing ever. i can't imagine the Big Apple comic con being better. NYCC is the 2nd largest con in the country. who would want to compete with that?
CorndogBurglar - 10/17/2009, 2:35 PM
Grrrrrrrrrrr!
ASSASSIN666 - 10/17/2009, 4:10 PM
CorndogBurglar, did you guys cosplay (dress up) at all? I did along with some friends that came with, and we had a lot of fun.

Whispers68, I view of it this way. You just got paid and paid off your bills for the month. You have some cash left, but you only have enough to go see one movie, eventhough there are two movies that are both something that you want to see. They are shown across town from each other and won't be in theaters when you get paid next time. Wich one will you go to see? The big budget blockbuster that you will love, and everybody will be talking about for months, or will you go the artsy one that you have only seen one trailer for and may or may not be any good? I'll stay with the big budget NYCC that I know I will love. In this economy forcing artists, stars, and companies to split themselves or chose between two events that are so similar to eachother and held the exact same dates IS selfish and stupid. The artsy one put on by that ass Gareb Shamus MAY be good, but he could've picked ANY other weekend to hold it. I don't think that either event will have better prices because of this. I just think that they will have less things there to see and do.

Tobuttica, I've read Wizard and I'm not all that impressed. It used to be better, but I don't think its all that these days.

@necrosage

That's what I was getting at...people won't be caught between a rock and a hard place with their decision. If they're low on funds and time, they'll stick to something more familiarized with or something they hear from word of mouth being worth their time/money, which ends up being NYCC.Imagine being low on funds and time and opt to venture to an unknown place when you know if you chose the other route, the decision would be more worth it because you know the positive nature of what to expect. Better to remain with the devil you know, than the devil you don't.
Whispers68 - 10/18/2009, 12:51 AM
@ necrosage

nope, we don't cosplay, i'm WAY to lazy for that, lol. i go to a LOT of cons, but NYCC took the cake. its what i would imagine comic nerd heaven being. i go to cons to get iconic back issues, like at NYCC i got Days of Future Past, with the classic cover of wolvie and kitty in a spot light. picked it up for 15 bucks!!!!!!!!! i also get my books CGC'd. but i DO love the costume contests. some of the things people come up with are amazing!!
