What the Batmobile Almost Looked Like in "Batman Forever."

How would you have felt about seeing the Batmobile designed in this manner in "Batman Forever?" Plus you can view transitions made by the Batmobile over the years from 1941 through the present.
Over the years, Batman's most frequently used vehicle, the Batmobile, has gone through several alterations. Whether it be from television series to the first theatrical film release of 1989 or the changes made from the 1989 film to "The Dark Knight."

When "Batman Forever" was being developed in 1994, the studio asked for the help of designer HR Giger to create his interpretation of the famous Batmobile. Giger is responsible for designing on such films as "Dune," "Alien," "Aliens 3" and "Species."

His style is clearly one of a nightmarish element. So when asked to design the vehicle, he created the following:

As you can see, the images are drastic changes from what we are familiar with. In fact, the vehicle appears of alien origin in my opinion.

Here's a brief trip down memory lane for those who need a visual display of the Batmobile from over the years.

The first Batmobile that appeared in 1941

the Batmobile used in the television series that ran from 1966-1979

The Batmobile used in Superfriends cartoon series from 1973-1977

The Batmobile used in Challenge of the Superfriends Cartoon Series/Comic Books

The Batmobile used by Michael Keaton in "Batman" from 1989 and "Batman Returns" in 1992

The Batmobile used in Batman: The Animated Series from 1992-1995

The Batmobile used by Val Kilmer in "Batman Forever" in 1995

The Batmobile used by George Clooney in "Batman & Robin" in 1997

The Batmobile used in the animated series "The New Adventures of Batman & Robin"
in 1997-2005

The Batmboile used in the animated series "Batman Beyond" in 1999-2002

The Batmobile used by Christian Bale in "Batman Begins" in 2005 and "The Dark Knight" in 2008.

Whispers68: As lame as it sounds, I still think my favorite representation of the Batmobile are the ones used in "Batman" and "Batman Returns" with Michael Keaton. Nonetheless, there have been major changes over the years done to this vehicle. I wonder if things will remain the same if and when Nolan releases a sequel to "The Dark Knight."

The Giger design looks like a furry pair of pliars.

Oooooohhhhhaaaaauuuuuuhhhhhh... XO
BmanHall - 11/3/2009, 2:55 PM
I like how the Batman Forever one that they went with is an homage to the old one that was most notably seen in The Killing Joke.
MovieTheaterLad - 11/3/2009, 2:57 PM
Bman@ lol

MovieTheaterLad@ yeah but that one didnt have wobbly fins....got i hate B forever :O
teabag - 11/3/2009, 3:00 PM
I have to agree about the TAS mobile, but I like the New Adventures of Bman and Robin as well. It just seems like all of them would have a terrible turning radius, but I guess that's what those grappling hooks are for.
Tobuttica - 11/3/2009, 3:01 PM
@ teabag: I hate Batman Forever too, but god do I love Wobbly fins!
BmanHall - 11/3/2009, 3:20 PM
Nothing better than the one from Batman and Batman Returns.
drizzle123 - 11/3/2009, 3:21 PM
Thank god for Tim Burton's Batman and Frank Miller, Batman looked like a dumbass until they showed up.
GunRyder - 11/3/2009, 3:22 PM
Whispers68: Cool article - you're on a roll today, lol!

Guys, check out my INHUMANS fan cast under "Fan Fic"!!! :)
joshw24 - 11/3/2009, 3:24 PM
the different batmobiles through the years have all been pretty awesome. Though, I have never been so happy to have crappy internet, every pic loads except the crappy Batman & Robin one! lol

But the one big question I want to ask is what are we going to get in the third movie? With the latest Batmobile destroyed, are we going to get a hybrid of the Tumbler and one of the Batmobile from the comics such as one of these:

I would like to see that

And that Bat rocket ship that Reese mentions in the second one better be in the third one lol
dancingmonkey08 - 11/3/2009, 3:28 PM
@teabag

That rather large and awkward fin on the "Batman Forever" Batmobile is pretty ugly. It looks like an underwater vessel that somehow made its way onto land.

In the animated universe, I like the Batmobile used in "The New Adventures..." But from the original animated series I also like that one. The "Batman Beyond" looks cool but not what I think when the Batmobile comes to mind, even if done in a future representation. Nonetheless, kudos to each designer for their hard work on the designs. The very first Batmobile reminds me of something an old pedophile would drive...somewhat like Old Man Herbet from "Family Guy."
Whispers68 - 11/3/2009, 3:29 PM
i always loved futuristic, technological stuff so i have to go with the beyond batmobile.
joob234 - 11/3/2009, 3:32 PM
@josh

Thanks...I haven't been able to find anything good lately but I saw the concept arts for the Batmobile and decided to make my own collection of the Batmobile's used since 1941.

@dancingmonkey

That is a pretty sweet hybrid. I actually like it. Like I mentioned in my article, if he does make a sequel, what representation of the Batmobile will he bring to lfe? I really wonder
Whispers68 - 11/3/2009, 3:33 PM
FTR, the Burton film wasn't the first theatrical release, as the opening post says. That was the Adam West film.
slimybug - 11/3/2009, 3:34 PM
i agree with bman. burton's batmobile was the best looking batmobile in all the movies and comics. no other version of the batmobile looks anywhere near as cool as that one.
CorndogBurglar - 11/3/2009, 3:56 PM
I actually liked the Batmobile from Batman the animated series, it looked the most appropriate for the time it was sent in out of all the other cars, it just seemed to fit not to much not to little.
TheSmytheFactor - 11/3/2009, 4:03 PM
Would have went well with the shitty movie
dxperry - 11/3/2009, 4:12 PM
batman forever one looks tacky and way overboard. it looks really delicate and lame.
lvlheaded - 11/3/2009, 4:22 PM
The Tumbler is my favorite of all time. It might not be as pretty as some of those others, but that is one MEAN MACHINE.
DarthMulder - 11/3/2009, 4:25 PM

I LIKE THE keaton and animated series ones too
dellamorte1872 - 11/3/2009, 5:10 PM

TheSoulEater - 11/3/2009, 5:36 PM
the bat mobile from Frorever looked like the batmobile from the 1940s to me not as cool as the 19989 m0vie or the carton but not to defrient from the comics
thedarkknight666 - 11/3/2009, 5:52 PM
ANYONE EVER SEE THE GRAPHIC NOVEL WITH BATMAN MEETING JUDGE DREAD AND JUDGE DEATH, HIS BATMOBILE IN THAT ONE IS PRETTY SICK LOOKING
GUNSMITH - 11/3/2009, 5:56 PM
this must be some type of joke lol

dragonquest67 - 11/3/2009, 6:14 PM
The Batmobile used in the animated series is still one of the best.
SgtPeppersComics - 11/3/2009, 6:14 PM

what about the one from "The Batman" series?
Batmobile
spiderman1985 - 11/3/2009, 6:43 PM
HR Giger's design is too alien and looks more like an insect or arachnid than a Bat. Or even an X chromosome. He's original objective of nightmarish car is ok but his final output is way -off Batman's image. However the actual Batmobile used in Batman Forever for me didn't fair too well either . Although took homage to the classical batmobiles it actually looks like something the Addam's Family would actually use . And the huge rubbery dorsal fin reminds me of Dick Dastardly's car.

I prefer Tim Burton's Batmobile as well as the Batman TAS but for sentimental reasons I still have a soft spot for Adam West's batmobile . It was my childhood's batmobile and it was one of the best gifts I got for Christmas.
Kalabog - 11/3/2009, 6:48 PM
im definately partial to tas batmobile and the keaton batmobile. i like the one from the batman sm1985 too. its pretty much a lambo with wings though. haha
VitMagic - 11/3/2009, 7:39 PM
Holy Sodomized Robin, Batman! That looks horrible..... Yeah Love the TAS version and the Burton version although the Batman cartoon version wasn't too bad...
InstigatorGIRL - 11/3/2009, 7:48 PM
The Goerge Barris design Ford Futura "Batmobile" is what started me on the road to comics. As a child, I thrilled to Adam West and Burt Ward's adventures. Later as a young person the camp of the show was hard to watch but then there was the car. The car always made the show so much better.

My second favorite mobile would be the '89 & '92 movie version. It grew on me being a departure from the old. It even had its own theme music; so cool.

I came to love the 2 version of the Batmobile of the reg Animated series of the '90s. Solid cars that met the bill.

I must now confess, I despise the Val Kilmer mobile as well loath the Clooney ride. I hate these cars not because of the bad view of the films they are in. I hate these cars with thier over the top design. This is a reflection of the productions and a target for marketing.

The batmobile is suppose to be obvious with design but functional in purpose. This brings me to the Tumbler. I see the Tumbler as a naturel advantage for the Bale Batman. In following adventures, I suspect Fox will be more themeatic with the vehicels design. It will be all black again with Stealth tech but incorperate a "bat" design.

FYI, I cant get the Clooney car to load. No loss, but you should check the source.
JYCowboy - 11/3/2009, 8:01 PM
My favorite is the Batman Beyond Batmobile. It can fly. The tumbler is my second because I was a tank driver in the Army and I would have liked to have one of those to play with.
Upupandaway - 11/3/2009, 8:09 PM
Gotta agree with most. the Tumbler and the Burton-mobile are the best.
MarkV - 11/3/2009, 8:19 PM
what about the batmobile form the batman his second car the breakable
flames809 - 11/3/2009, 8:28 PM
@gunsmith

is this it?

Whispers68 - 11/3/2009, 8:40 PM
@slimy

My error, Adam West appeared in the 1966 film called "Batman: the Movie." Didn't think anyone cared for it or saw it so I didn't mention it. I am now.
Whispers68 - 11/3/2009, 8:44 PM
The Tumbler is great, but I'd like to see something a little more slick and shiny in the TDK sequel.

I can't wait to see what Nolan has in store for us.
Macksimus - 11/3/2009, 9:09 PM
The HR Giger version looks like a Ron Moore Cylon Raider or Basestar. I like the original batmobile, the one before the Adam West series. It was just a car with a bat on the door.
Number21 - 11/3/2009, 9:09 PM
U forgot the batmobile from the new series the batman, and whatever he drove in Public enemies. but i dont even know 4sure that he had a car in that last one?
DarkKnight2099 - 11/3/2009, 9:51 PM
@darkknight

I actually didn't remember those two

Batman: The Brave & The Bold

Whispers68 - 11/3/2009, 10:21 PM
The Gotham Knight anime

For some reason I can't find the batmobile from Public Enemies
Whispers68 - 11/3/2009, 10:28 PM
Guys... remember that the Tumbler is NOT a Batmobile. Every other vehicle that has been a Batmobile has been named such AND has been of Bruce's own design which the Tumbler obviously isn't. As a matter of fact the reason the Tumbler was destroyed in DK was to allow for the introduction of the Batmobile in the next movie. You have to think of Begins and Dark Knight kinda like you do Casino Royale in the Bond series, he's just starting out so he doesn't have all his gadgets yet. Really it won't be until the next movie that we see Batman as we know him, with the help of COMMISSIONER Gordon and no more Rachel to distract him

Here's another shot from the Judge Dred/Batman meetup "Judgement on Gotham". Love the art in that book

And here's a shot of the Batplane from Public enemies... I don't remember seeing the Batmobile at all in that movie though

DeadWebHead - 11/3/2009, 11:05 PM
the guy who thought that up is outta of his mind,a lot of concepts for comic book movies that came out of the '90s was crap for instance the failed superman lives the concept art for that one was crap
ComicFreak11 - 11/3/2009, 11:24 PM
I like the Animated batmobile which was the best animated superhero show back in the 90's, I also like the Batman Forever and Returns batmobile, looks very sleek
Instantclassic - 11/3/2009, 11:25 PM
I must say both animated series were the best. Simple and awesome. Looks like a Cadillac Sixteen. The ones from the Batman and Returns were the second best. Simple. Dark Knight and Begins are not bat mobiles, they are tanks. Bring back a batmobile.
YorickBrown355 - 11/3/2009, 11:30 PM
the bat mobile in the dark knight was realistic,bat mobile in 1&2 ok but a little to flashy, bat mobile in 3&4 not good at all with all the lights and fins
ComicFreak11 - 11/3/2009, 11:39 PM
Please tell me we don't have another Luffy...
HeyVanity - 11/3/2009, 11:42 PM
The 60's TV one, hands down
JohnnyKrypton - 11/4/2009, 7:08 AM
Have any of you seen the Batmobile in Arkham Asylum?

That one is by far the most bad-ass batmobile of all time, hands down!
BLACKWINGS17 - 11/4/2009, 8:55 AM
Anyone else think that batmobile looks like an x chromosome?

@HeyVanity

I was just thinking the same thing

@dragonquest

Dude, we've already had one asshole that posted nothing but anime vids on this site, and we don't need another. Whether you're some new guy, or perhaps the same one, using a different name/avatar, CUT THE CRAP!

supermarioworldE - 11/4/2009, 9:22 AM
Wow that Batmobile looked like crap. It looked almost as bad as the one from Batman & Robin.
ironknight27 - 11/4/2009, 9:38 AM
I seem to remember a different Batmobile from Batman and Robin. It was silver I think. Anyways I'm pretty sure that the Batmobile in the next movie will be fairly close in design to the one from Gothem Knights since it is in the same universe. Personally I'm partial to the Tim Burton Batmobile but I have to agree that it seems sorta impractical. But then again it did come out in the late 80's.
SolidSnake007 - 11/4/2009, 12:12 PM
can't see the pics in here - but the one on the front page looks like a purple court room doll bent over getting ready to be annihilated.
Keven - 11/4/2009, 1:16 PM
and fcuk this dude - if that guy posting the anime sh!t isn't luffy then he needs to realize we don't want that random sh!t in here. fcuk off you douche.
Keven - 11/4/2009, 1:18 PM
Looks like our old pal Luffy got blocked. Wouldn't be surprised if he is back for revenge.
HeyVanity - 11/4/2009, 2:02 PM
@supermario
It does look like an x chromosome haha... What the [frick] were they thinking?
HeyVanity - 11/4/2009, 2:03 PM
Maybe he has a fetish for all things animated and his method of handling is posting with each comment, a video clip
Whispers68 - 11/4/2009, 2:06 PM
What they should do is take the remaining parts of the tank thats left and rebuild it into a shorter version of TAS Batmobile (so it doesnt have bad turns)... I still perfer a Tank over a Car for Batman anyday.

But if he had only used the motorcycle in the next movie that wouldnt be bad either...I would like to see him go roof top to roof top with that lol
Aiiwolf - 11/4/2009, 2:21 PM
That would've been cool to see in Batman Forever.
legder20 - 11/4/2009, 2:43 PM

The Tumbler's pretty cool too, though. I'm also looking forward to
knowing what's going to replace it in the next film, if it isn't the Batpod.
uburton - 11/4/2009, 3:01 PM
@blackswing

i guess my initial intention for posting this article was to show the concept art for "Batman Forever" and then do a collection of Batmobiles over the years from the first comic book and then show what transformation was made in the TV series, animated series and the theatrical releases.

I do have a picture of the one from the asylum. I'm receiving many request about different Batmobiles but I can't alter the article now.
Whispers68 - 11/4/2009, 7:09 PM
this is the closest image I can find of the one I liked. It was slightly different. They weren't really wings, but just like on the back where it curves up, the front did as well. I wish I could find a picture of the actual one I'm talking about. It was used in the comics briefly.

thisguyaz - 11/4/2009, 8:12 PM
I love HR Gigers artwork, but his style is always a tech/humanoid hybrid with sexual overtones. Perfect for films like Alien with the otherworldly designs but not the way to go for any Batman film!

Personally I go for functionality/ practicality first and foremost - therefore The Tumbler wins hands down!

The Tumbler is "the batmobile" btw - Nolan just isn't a fan of the whole bat preface. It's the only batman car that can actually weave between traffic, turn sharp corners (without aid) and has loads of other gizmos and gadgets that are actually useful in everyday situations, not just the "here's a scene to use this for" stuff! (Climbing walls, turning corners, etc)
kaos - 11/4/2009, 9:25 PM
@thisguyaz

which comic is that from?
Whispers68 - 11/5/2009, 2:04 AM
i like burton's batmobile. i also like "the batman" one...it gives me that modern feasible look. i never really liked nolan's batmobile...more of a bat-tank for me. batman should be sleek and subtle. bat-tank is for carnage lol...i give it points for intimidation tho.
redskullrevenge - 11/5/2009, 11:58 AM

redskullrevenge - 11/5/2009, 12:13 PM
as posted above, it's not that the tumbler isn't the batmobile, it's that nolan hates the bat prefix so you'll never hear it referred to as the batmobile in his movies no matter what it looks like.
thwhtGuardian - 11/5/2009, 1:48 PM
Hey, you missed the most recent version! You missed Grayson's Batmobile!!!

http://www.batmobilehistory.com/2009br01-batmobile.jpg

Which can be seen there.

It can drive on the road and also fly. Which makes it bad ass.
Jib7z - 11/5/2009, 3:55 PM
H.R GIGER create art, is the most terrorific and beautiful Batmobile.
OSCURO - 11/5/2009, 4:34 PM
that batmobile form 1997 batman & robin is incorrect

this is the 97 batman & robin batmobile
shadowboxer - 11/5/2009, 8:31 PM
@Whispers68 - the picture I posted I'm not sure. I just found that one on a google search. The one I'm refering to was briefly in the 90's in Detective Comics, Batman etc. I believe it was suposed to be the same as the one shown just the artist on the story arc at the time took a little creative license.
thisguyaz - 11/5/2009, 8:56 PM
@shadwoboxer

the posting image of Batman & Robin was correct, for some reason it doesn't show up any longer so the image you see it posted above is just a small black box and right below is the batmobile from the animated series...so it comes off as that specific batmobile is what i posted under Batman & Robin.
Whispers68 - 11/5/2009, 10:06 PM
It kind of has a 'Batman Beyond' feel to it. My favorite is still the Tumbler.

!960's batmobile is the coolest
Batmobile from Batman begins is the baddest!!!!!
