Green Lantern Is Fifth At International Box Office; Captain America Adds Another $12M

The international box office numbers for this weekend are here...As you all know, Green Lantern didn't make enough money in US as many thought it will. It's now on $115 million, and it won't go much higher than that. But, can the international numbers help its gross? The Hollywood Reporter has more info on that, as well as the numbers for Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger, which is still doing solid after almost a month since it was released.

"Debuts in six markets including a No. 2 bow in France ($3.5 million from 480 locations) lifted the overall weekend tally for Marvel Studios’ Captain American: The First Avenger to $12 million from 4,718 venues in 51 territories, and elevated the 3D superhero comic book adaptation’s overseas cume to $147 million. It ranked No. 4 on the weekend. Fifth was Warner’s Green Lantern, which is picking up some steam overseas. The weekend generated $11.4 million from about 4,200 venues in 35 territories. A Brazil opener provided $3.3 million from 352 sites. Foreign cume: $78.6 million."

It seems Cap will make the same numbers as X-Men: First Class, maybe even more. As of now it is on $164M domestic and another $147M from international markets, brings it to a worldwide total of $311M. Film was made for $140M and it is still playing in theatres. Green Lantern's domestic numbers plus $78M at international box office, brings the total gross to $193M. Film was made for $200M and it's also still playing.

it's a shame, GL was okay, I doubt anyone will fork over any more money for another one.

Cap was awesome, wish it had more international numbers so the next one would command a bigger budget

GL has to be the most underrated CBM of the century. Sure it didn't meet fanboys' expectations, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. Hope it makes enough to cover its budget so we can have the sequel.

A lot went wrong with Green Lantern, but it was still an entertaining movie!
I hope the Blu-ray/DVD sales will be good enough so that that we'll get a better sequel.

What is this... a horse race!
Captain America is superior in every way. The 'American' theme in the movie might hurt national pride in some countries, which can translate into not-as-hoped for results, but whatever, let's see another country create a genre and excel in it. it's a good movie no matter what your nationality is. Everybody in the U.S.is from somewhere else anyhow.

@tea - that was the most inconsiderate post for anyone who might have been molested or abused. I cannot believe that was up there and that an image of a boy crying while Michael Jackson is stalking him would seem at all appropriate.

I saw GL last week when it was released. It was very mediocre, wasn't THAT bad, but definitely a missed opportunity. As for box office, it's doing so-so internationally. We'll see. Warner Bros. made a huge mistake with worldwide release dates.

Do the costs of the movies in the article include advertising? If not the GL numbers are even worse than they appear.

Bodwulf

Remember studios usually only get half of overseas profits so actual overseas total would be 39 mill
leaving GL at -46 million.
DVD sales could pull him out of the crapper.

@ Mr.NoFear. This is how thing "get on the main." These guys get paid to put things on here to get hits. If you put it on and are not on the payroll, no main page. If you are getting paid by Adsense then whatever you post gets on the main.

For green lantern, the budget may be 200 million but don't forget they also spent 100 million in advertisement, so that amount to 300 million in total actually that they need to surpass. And the movie was garbage. You'd have to be an extreme simplistic fool to think otherwise.

I was hoping captain america to do better than Thor, because story-wise, captain really was superior. I guess all this controversy about Heimdall and Idris elba might have helped it to go further than the others.

Green Lantern wil probably make it's budget back, without counting millions used to promote it though (like 100/150 millions), but it hasn't been successful enough for a sequel.

Also, please stop trying to make Ryan Reynolds happen. He seems like a cool guy and he's pretty decent actor but he doesn't have enough charisma to be a leading actor/hollywood man.

GL and his other flop movie with Jason Bateman prove that.

headlopper, I have to disagree completely. Transformers The Dark of the Moon is far away patriotic than Captain America and made US$ 747 million overseas.

And I liked Thor and Caps movies but the truth is that they were made for 8 years old children. Just OK movies for kids.

captain america $311,732,000 worldwide will cap make $350,000,000 i hope so.

green lantern $193,000,000 will it reach $200,000,000,i don't know it might.

it might if it stays in cinema the same length of time as the dark knight.(33 weeks almost 8 months)

PaulRom - 8/21/2011, 4:49 PM
@Bodwulf No, Adsense has nothing to do with an article being on main. If the article's posted by an editor or trusted user, it goes straight to main. If it's posted by a contributer, an editor decides if it's main worthy or not.

GL's marketing budget was reported at $150 to $175 million.

The rule of thumb for box-office profitability is that you have to generate twice the prodcution budget in WW gross to break even. Thus CAPTAIN AMERICA: The First Avenger had to cross $280 million WW to start generating a profit. Thus it's already profitable with a way still to go.

On the other hand GL would have to generate $400 million WW to break even; not even close.

Trust me, GL's failure is complete.
