The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

The ensemble cast includes Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving, Andy Serkis, Richard Armitage, John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Luke Evans, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Barry Humphries, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Evangeline Lilly, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, and Aidan Turner, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee and Cate Blanchett.

i rate the lord of the rings trilogy in this order.

1st fellowship of the ring (near perfection) 4.5/5

2nd return of the king (huge battles, too many endings) 4/5

3rd the two towers (intro gollum, but treebeard makes me sleepy) 4/5

actually marvel, that's pretty spot-on my list,

1. FOTR -- Near Perfect, not really sure of a flaw,
2. ROTK -- loses points for too many endings
3. TT -- definitely the weakest, but it does have helm's deep, the ents awake and wargs

I like the chain and bucket falling in the film, because it made me practicly hold my breath for ages like the characters in the film hoping the orcs wouldnt hear it,pretty intense moment of the film tbh, better than just hearing a stone fall

I've been so damn excited because of these Hobbit Prodution Diaries. I've been watching LOTR's and King Kong extras for a few weeks now and with the Hobbit trailer way over-the-top EXCITED. Hopefuly, the Mayans were wrong and we'll get to see The Hobbit before the world ends next December.

isildur cut off saurons finger from his dead body after gil galad and elendil actually killed him
it was also frodos 33rd bday party too, 17 years between when bilbo leaves the shire and frodo leaves the shire in the book, movie seemed like a few months at the most. but never mentioned in the movie
no tom bombadil! i was really pissed over this.
arwen replaced glofindel
and tons of other differences
just check out this site below if youve never really understood just how different the movies are from the books it might blow your mind!

but the movies were thorough to a high degree and still my all-time favorites

@Godzillafart - One thing to keep in mind is that the trilogy was shot on a relatively small budget for a film of its size and caliber (under 100 million each), so they had to stretch every dollar as far as it could go for the first film. Mistakes just had to get swept under the rug and some character models (early Gollum for example) simply had to do.

Obviously from the video, the Hobbit won't be suffering from many (if any) budget constraints.

And I disagree about Boromir's death scene, I loved it. He was whooping wholesale Uruk ass even with three arrows in his chest. Aragorn swooping in didn't take away from that, if anything it showed that Boromir might be the better hand-to-hand combatant.

@Godzillafart as much as I absolutely love Jackson's trilogy, I understand the points you addressed

TT may be the weakest of the 3 but is still a fantastic film. Jackson even stated how it sucks to try and make the middle film seem so important when all it really does is take what the first 1 did and transition it to the 3rd. I can understand that because the Opening (Fellowship) and the Climax (Return) are way more important and exciting than the Rising Action (Towers)

Out of the changes that Jackson made, most were minor and didn't really stray from the book's tone but 2 off the top of my head stood out as great changes:

In the Fellowship book, Bilbo leaves on his 111th birthday and leaves the ring to Frodo who is 33 at the times. Gandalf leaves and 17 years go by before he returns to tell Frodo he has the One Ring, making Frodo 50 (the same age a Bilbo in The Hobbit). I preferred the movie version where Frodo is thrust right into his journey as a young man who just came of age.

The other is at the end of Two Towers where the elves come to aid at Helms Deep. That was a perfect addition to the scene as it gave the elves one last bit of sympathy on the race of men, before they decide to just quit and leave Middle-Earth forever.

As for budget goes, all three LOTR movies had a budget of 94 million, the total cost of The Hobbit is 500 million

Another thing to think about, the total shooting time for all 3 LOTR movies combined was around 260 days of filming, The Hobbit, which has 2 movies, has around 250 days of filming so there shouldn't be anything to worry about containing enough content

thinking of reading the book before the film comes out.
