io9 has a pretty great video of the VFX breakdown for the Joss Whedon-directed film The Avengers, coming to Blu-ray and DVD on September 25th. The video gives us a behind-the-scenes look at how all those artist at Industrial Light & Magic created some of most stunning CG shots for the film.

There is no embed, so click the image below to check out the video:

Along with the video, the site also had a chance to sit down and talk to Visual Effects Supervisor Jeff White, Animation Director Marc Chu and Associate Visual Effects Supervisor Jason Smith, who shared some new info on the characters and CG shots. To read much more, just follow the link at the bottom of this article:

* They studied the corners of Mark Ruffalo's eyeballs

They captured Ruffalo "right down to the pore level," says White. "We did a cast of his teeth." They shot the corners of his eyeballs, so they could spread his eyes. They took a ton of images of the inside of his gums, and the space between his fingers. They studied his fingerprints. They captured every aspect of Ruffalo's stubble, and even every little ingrown hair. And every mole. They recorded the inside of Ruffalo's armpits. "The Hulk has a couple of scars that are straight from the source," says Jason Smith.

* Hulk's motions were partly based on apes

According to Chu, they studied simian motions for the Hulk — and when Mark Ruffalo came to the studio to experiment with different motions in the mo-cap suit, he "started to tend to go towards more apish motions, giving him that animalistic quality that gives you a feeling that he's not quite in control."

* They totally changed how Iron Man flies

Joss Whedon "wanted to take off the training wheels" that Iron Man had in his first two movies, says Marc Chu, who had worked on both Iron Man films. In other words, Iron Man needed to be able to fly without using the thrusters in his hands and feet this time around. They added a "backpack thruster," and that enabled Iron Man "to make some comic book poses" instead of using his limbs to hover.

* Hulk punching Thor was one of the hardest shots to get right

That sequence took from the first day of the process until the very end, says White. It's one long continuous shot of the two of them working together, ending with Hulk punching Thor. For the actual punch, they put Chris Hemsworth in front of a bluescreen standing on top of a real section of a downed Leviathan that they built. And they attached Hemsworth to a cable pull that they retimed, so he could look like he was knocked sidewise. They cut a few frames out of the footage, so it looks like Hulk's punch has "instant impact," says White.

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”--the super hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. It really is crazy to think of the amount of stuff in this movie that is fake but looks so real on film.... bravo to the FX crew on this movie... Oscar nom?

jimpinto24 - 9/6/2012, 12:47 PM
They did a great job with CGI with Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk when he would Hulk up.
GoILL - 9/6/2012, 12:58 PM
@blackandyellow

LMAO.
angus666 - 9/6/2012, 1:13 PM
You could definitely tell Apes influenced his movement in some scenes.
Maximus101 - 9/6/2012, 1:15 PM
Crazy detail, really paid off. Hard to say if I like ruffalo or norton better. Nortons hulk was good too I thought.

I noticed as well Hulk moved like an ape in two scenes...

First, right before he starts slamming Loki into the ground, Hulk aproaches him by pounding his fists into the ground angrily before walking towards him

Secondly, after he saves Iron Man and he's laying on the floor, Hulk is looking down on him walking on his knuckels

I'm not a huge fan of Ruffalo's acting. I'll admit, I wasn't happy when I heard he was going to be playing Bruce Banner but, after seeing The Avengers, I will gladly eat my words. I think he did a fantastic job. I still feel that Norton's Banner was more accurately portrayed when compared to the comics but Ruffalo's Hulk was [frick]ing spot on and, by far, the best I've seen to date.
supermarioworldE - 9/6/2012, 1:22 PM
I was so thrilled to see a Hulk that actually resembled the actor playing him for once. Very fine and detailed.

Great work indeed from the visual effects crew.
Bane2099 - 9/6/2012, 1:24 PM
They said that Cap was originally fighting somehwere else when they did the panoramic scene of each team member, but then decided to put in in the same shot with Iran man when he uses Caps shield to deflect his repulsor shot to the Chitauri...

Makes me curious to know now where Cap really was supposed to be during the battle before they changed their minds?
Bane2099 - 9/6/2012, 1:25 PM
Oh and has anyone noticed that quick scene in the trailer where it shows Cap in wat looks to be an alley way throwing his shield towards the cameras was not in the final film, wonder what happened to that scene?
Ceejay - 9/6/2012, 1:33 PM
Norton's Hulk had a better concept design to it but the CGi and animation of Ruffalo's Hulk was superior. I feel they used too much of Ruffalo's actual likeness in the Hulk.

If they had continued with the same Hulk model from Norton, then no matter what actor takes over the part, they'd still have some visual continuity with the character on screen.
Ha1frican - 9/6/2012, 1:42 PM
I felt like TIH had a much better temperment than The Avengers version, i didnt like how ape like he was, the other felt more aware of his surroundings yet truly aggressive, and i missed the green eyes but overall he was awesome.
ComfortablyNumb - 9/6/2012, 2:33 PM
If they could combine the Hulk from Avengers with the Hulk from TIH THAT would be the perfect Hulk. Make it so, Marvel!
Fogs - 9/6/2012, 2:37 PM
Avengers' Hulk was the perfect rendition. Keep it, blindly.
SageMode - 9/6/2012, 2:38 PM
The best representation of the Hulk to date. No doubt sbout that.
chuckg313 - 9/6/2012, 3:28 PM
the best version of the hulk by far but thought he was a bit too ape like for me tone that down a bit and im gud
PantherX - 9/6/2012, 4:27 PM
4. When Thor uses Mjolnir to create a storm cloud, that's stock footage.
They were going to create a huge simulation of a storm over Thor's head, but in the end they just wound up buying a stock clip of storm clouds forming in a circle. It's a super-brief shot, so it wasn't worth creating CG clouds for.

Those lazy buggers! :p
PapaMidnight - 9/6/2012, 4:56 PM
Best Hulk ever... and i think Ruffalo's maybe the best Banner. But he needs a solo movie to prove that.
VaCubFan - 9/6/2012, 5:45 PM
Couldn't one argue that "technically" Hulk still has a willy, but that there's "shrinkage" when he Hulks-out? I mean- if Banner (i assume) has one... it doesn't just fall off and regenerate, right? Just crawls up in him like when it's cold!
Watcher - 9/6/2012, 5:55 PM
The Hulk in the Avengers was SO superior to all the other movie versions.

This is the only time thus far that they got everything exactly right.

They didn't really show his healing factor, but then again no one dished out anything that could actually hurt em enough to need to heal from it.
UrbanKnight - 9/6/2012, 7:08 PM
The Hulk was one of best things in the movie if not the best!
LOL. I knew it! I could tell they used apes as a reference. Brilliant.
deanwilkins - 9/6/2012, 7:57 PM
I love this movie. Hulk was the best we've ever seen him. By far!
MisterMagurlypse - 9/6/2012, 8:35 PM
Not to sure about the ape-like characteristics in his movement. But nonetheless still a kickass Hulk. A great performance by Ruffalo too. Loved when he scared the shit out of Widow in the tent.
Jolt17 - 9/7/2012, 1:45 AM
I can tell that the Hulk punching Thor scene is one of the hardest parts to get right in the whole movie - it's, like, something that we commonly see in cartoons, but...not in a spectacular movie like this. Which is an awesome thing, of course. I'm really glad that they decided to slip something like that into the movie.

Also love how Iron Man no longer has to rely on his thrusters. I've always been thinking of how "less-comic-book" the whole "relying on hand thrusters to be stable" thing since the first movie, and I'm really glad they changed it here.

Well, VFX breakdowns are always fun to see, but...with The Avengers? It's the best thing I've ever seen today.
bobbo68 - 9/7/2012, 5:12 AM
I had my doubts about Mark Ruffalo as Banner but he did a really good job pulling it off but still think Edward Norton was the Banner. But the Hulk was awesome way better than Ang Lee's and just because the CGI was better he was better the Norton Hulk. Very cool film loved looking to the sequel as well as Thor ,Iron Man , and Captain America sequels.
ironkidd - 9/7/2012, 7:11 AM
I knew that he acted like a ape after he yell at tony he was beating on his chest and jumped around like one. BUT THE BEST HULK EVER!!!!!!!!!!love the avengers
DoubleD - 9/7/2012, 10:26 AM
HULK IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE ! But that was one of my problems with the Hulk in the Avengers . Another is he didn't talk enough. Sometimes it was quite obvious that they were copying a ape. Hulk is man stands tall. He is a King on Planet Hulk.
DoubleD - 9/7/2012, 10:27 AM
When they had Hulk standing there with knuckles on the ground I almost threw my popcorn at the screen
Fogs - 9/8/2012, 8:47 AM
Hulk's a beast in his nature. Nothing more natural than using a huge man-like beast found in nature as a reference.

Looked closer to the classic Hulk and had a beastly attitude. Cool as shit in my book.
