Zack Snyder Working On a New STAR WARS Movie; Won't Be Connected To The Upcoming Trilogy

Director Zack Snyder is reportedly developing a new Samurai-style Star Wars project for LucasFilm and Disney, but it won't be Epiode VII, as the film won't be a part of the upcoming trilogy. More after the jump...

As we wait for an announcement on who will be helming Star Wars Episode VII, something else has been revealed. According to Vulture, director Zack Snyder (Watchmen, Man of Steel) is seemingly developing a Star Wars project for LucasFilm and Walt Disney. But, it's not Episode VII. The report says that the film he is working on is set in that universe, though it won't be connected to the new trilogy:

" He is in fact developing a Star Wars project for Lucasfilm that is set within the series’ galaxy, though parallel to the next trilogy. It will be an as-yet-untitled Jedi epic loosely based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai, with the ronin and katana being replaced by the Force-wielding knights and their iconic lightsabers."

That part about this spin-off being based on Kurosawa's masterpiece Seven Samurai is really interesting. The Zack Snyder-directed Star Wars film sounds pretty great to me, and if you add some Samurai stuff, that's only a plus. The report also adds:

"...but one insider expects it will not be considered part of the “numbered” episodes, but rather a stand-alone film set sometime post–Episode VI events, meaning the next phase of the franchise development is much broader than previously thought. Our sources also say that Snyder’s would start production after Disney starts on its planned 2015 release of Star Wars: Episode VII.

Walt Disney is planning to release Star Wars Episode VII in 2015, followed by a new Star Wars film every two to three years. It was recently revealed that Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine writer Michael Arndt will pen Episode VII and that he already wrote treatments for an entire new trilogy, while Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg will also work on the films by possibly expadning the universe with spin-offs.

Oh man, this sounds amazing. Snyder certainly knows how to make an epic film, and a Jedi samurai movie...wow. I'm almost as excited for this as I am for Episode VII.

I love the idea of having spin-offs, you can have the episodes focus on the skywalker clan but the spin offs allow for some much needed expansion on the big screen that is.

This is strange news...and not only that, but clueless move goers are going to assume this is the next Star Wars film we've all been hearing about. I still have friends who think that the 90's Batman era is connected to TDK...Snyder doesn't have a hope in hell

"set sometime post–Episode VI events" yeah so the people that want a prequel with maul for some reason not gonna happen. Plus even snyder can't [frick] up if he's using Seven Samurai's as the basic structure movie, he can't, please tell me he can't?

So he won't seriously start work on this until AFTER Star Wars VII is released or in post production? Good.

As long as it doesn't interfere with him directing the MOS sequel and possibly directing JL then I'm fine with this.

This doesn't necessarily mean he's going to direct ( but its likely). Plus kinda depends on how well MOS does, I'm pretty sure WB would want him back for a sequel if the first one does well.

Not that I'm inclined to elaborate at this moment, nor would anyone give a sh!t, but in every Snyder movie (other than DOTD), this director has felt the need to subject his female characters to unnecessary pain and/or suffering.
Queen Gorgo, Sally Jupiter, Babydoll...all were beaten/abused FAR beyond the source material...

DON'T let this be an element of MOS or this Star wars film...PLEASE

Some fans were already working on a Seven Samurai meets Star Wars film called Seven Jedi. They'd actually shot quite a bit but I believe it may have fallen through in the end.

Notsure what to think. Part of me thinks tey shouldn't do films that aren't actual episodes. But a larger part of me is screaming "THIS IS AWESOME!!" all around my noggin. Zack Snyder's Star Wars?! Fvck yes!
And the Seven Samurai is going back to the source, which is what Snyder's good at, when you look at his past work. (Kurosawa's Seven Samurai and Hidden Fortress were part of Lucas' original inspiration for Star Wars and are homaged frequently in Star Wars).
Now all we need is Kevin Smith's Boba Fett movie.

This is great news! I don't know what you guys are complaining about!!

This means we'll get a new Star Wars story that doesn't tie in with the other films... Fresh characters, Fresh Approach - whilst still within that universe! Great News!!!
