Zack Snyder Working On a New STAR WARS Movie; Won't Be Connected To The Upcoming Trilogy

As we wait for an announcement on who will be helming Star Wars Episode VII, something else has been revealed. According to Vulture, director Zack Snyder (Watchmen, Man of Steel) is seemingly developing a Star Wars project for LucasFilm and Walt Disney. But, it's not Episode VII. The report says that the film he is working on is set in that universe, though it won't be connected to the new trilogy:

" He is in fact developing a Star Wars project for Lucasfilm that is set within the series’ galaxy, though parallel to the next trilogy. It will be an as-yet-untitled Jedi epic loosely based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai, with the ronin and katana being replaced by the Force-wielding knights and their iconic lightsabers."

That part about this spin-off being based on Kurosawa's masterpiece Seven Samurai is really interesting. The Zack Snyder-directed Star Wars film sounds pretty great to me, and if you add some Samurai stuff, that's only a plus. The report also adds:

"...but one insider expects it will not be considered part of the “numbered” episodes, but rather a stand-alone film set sometime post–Episode VI events, meaning the next phase of the franchise development is much broader than previously thought. Our sources also say that Snyder’s would start production after Disney starts on its planned 2015 release of Star Wars: Episode VII.

Walt Disney is planning to release Star Wars Episode VII in 2015, followed by a new Star Wars film every two to three years. It was recently revealed that Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine writer Michael Arndt will pen Episode VII and that he already wrote treatments for an entire new trilogy, while Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg will also work on the films by possibly expadning the universe with spin-offs.

What do you think of this news?

Hellsing - 1/14/2013, 11:08 AM
Seven Jedi's or Seven Bounty Hunters? maybe who knows I am cool long as there's some one watching the bastard carefully, when he's left alone he makes shit like sucker punch. Good news that its not connected to the episodes.
PaulRom - 1/14/2013, 11:08 AM
Oh man, this sounds amazing. Snyder certainly knows how to make an epic film, and a Jedi samurai movie...wow. I'm almost as excited for this as I am for Episode VII.
Hellsing - 1/14/2013, 11:09 AM
I love the idea of having spin-offs, you can have the episodes focus on the skywalker clan but the spin offs allow for some much needed expansion on the big screen that is.
TheRedSkull - 1/14/2013, 11:13 AM
This is strange news...and not only that, but clueless move goers are going to assume this is the next Star Wars film we've all been hearing about. I still have friends who think that the 90's Batman era is connected to TDK...Snyder doesn't have a hope in hell
TheRedSkull - 1/14/2013, 11:13 AM
Movie*
marvel72 - 1/14/2013, 11:20 AM
i always thought star wars a new hope was based on in a kind of way the seven samurai.

anyway snyder + star wars = erection. :P
Hellsing - 1/14/2013, 11:23 AM
"set sometime post–Episode VI events" yeah so the people that want a prequel with maul for some reason not gonna happen. Plus even snyder can't [frick] up if he's using Seven Samurai's as the basic structure movie, he can't, please tell me he can't?
wolverinesfury - 1/14/2013, 11:23 AM

Was having a blah day till I read this. Now I feel like I can take on the Empire myself. Oops hope I don't get blown up now.;)
JULEZ13 - 1/14/2013, 11:25 AM
So he won't seriously start work on this until AFTER Star Wars VII is released or in post production? Good.

As long as it doesn't interfere with him directing the MOS sequel and possibly directing JL then I'm fine with this.
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 1/14/2013, 11:26 AM
BULL SHIT!!!! He is WB's boy, what's he doing over at disney
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 1/14/2013, 11:27 AM
and disney better not be pulling some "star wars initiative" bull, with han solo recruiting mother[frick]ers to fight the sith...
FightAs0ne - 1/14/2013, 11:30 AM
Animated movie about Star Wars from Zacky? I'm game.
ATrueHero1987 - 1/14/2013, 11:35 AM
Huh?? Ok, I guess...
Hellsing - 1/14/2013, 11:39 AM
This doesn't necessarily mean he's going to direct ( but its likely). Plus kinda depends on how well MOS does, I'm pretty sure WB would want him back for a sequel if the first one does well.
MB007 - 1/14/2013, 11:40 AM
A Samurai-like Star Wars movie with lightsabers instead of katana's? I AM IN! :D
Hellsing - 1/14/2013, 11:41 AM
@batz11 oh really my bad dude, misunderstood you. But totally agree it would be awesome to something based on the old republic.
fettastic - 1/14/2013, 11:42 AM
Though the Seven Samurai motif is getting a little old.....it should fit perfectly within the Star Wars universe.

I still personally think a Knights of the Old Republic film is where they really need to go. I'll say that Disney really does seem to be populated by fans of our generation so it could still very well happen. I mean if they're going to be cranking out that many flicks, they need stories and those are favorites.

SNYDER DOIN A STAR WARS FILM BASED ON A SAMURAI FLICK

gambgel - 1/14/2013, 11:45 AM
if this ends being true, this will be his only proyect between Man of steel movies.

not bad
PapaMidnight - 1/14/2013, 11:48 AM
Cool...i guess?
fettastic - 1/14/2013, 11:49 AM
As long as we're dreaming....[frick] it, let's go ahead and have a Darth Maul prequel film!

We see his harsh life growing up on a hostile planet, battling monsters, taken in by Darth Sideous and groomed to be the ultimate badass. Maybe he even helps him kill Plaegous as his final test before he unleashes his evil plan on Coruscant.

The last shot of the film is the hanger door opening on Naboo and his eyes opening.

Tell me that wouldn't be a badassed mother [frick]in' movie!
JasonZumwalt - 1/14/2013, 11:51 AM
BAD ASS.
punkstealingluggage - 1/14/2013, 11:55 AM
Starkiller level a$$kicking. Nuff said.
RexDartEskimoSpy - 1/14/2013, 12:00 PM
Sigh. At least it'll look cool.
SteveRogersSon - 1/14/2013, 12:03 PM
shrug...why don't you finish one film before bragging about starting another one....

Sucker Punch Star Wars Style...
Spideyman - 1/14/2013, 12:04 PM
A pixar animated star wars film by zack snyder oh yeah!!!

HOLY SHIT!!!!!! YODA IS A BEAST!!!! "Puny Jedi, you are" @Cipher, idk where you found that, but nice [frick]in find bro, Cheers!!!

@Niklander
Awesome gif dude, used to love the emperors new groove lol perfect for this situation.

But, on subject, a Snyder Star Wars film should be just what the doc ordered.
punkstealingluggage - 1/14/2013, 12:09 PM
Not that I'm inclined to elaborate at this moment, nor would anyone give a sh!t, but in every Snyder movie (other than DOTD), this director has felt the need to subject his female characters to unnecessary pain and/or suffering.
Queen Gorgo, Sally Jupiter, Babydoll...all were beaten/abused FAR beyond the source material...

DON'T let this be an element of MOS or this Star wars film...PLEASE

Spideyman - 1/14/2013, 12:10 PM
A yoda prequel
Danbojohnj - 1/14/2013, 12:10 PM
I'm in.
Vadakin - 1/14/2013, 12:11 PM
Some fans were already working on a Seven Samurai meets Star Wars film called Seven Jedi. They'd actually shot quite a bit but I believe it may have fallen through in the end.
DukeAcureds - 1/14/2013, 12:13 PM
Notsure what to think. Part of me thinks tey shouldn't do films that aren't actual episodes. But a larger part of me is screaming "THIS IS AWESOME!!" all around my noggin. Zack Snyder's Star Wars?! Fvck yes!
And the Seven Samurai is going back to the source, which is what Snyder's good at, when you look at his past work. (Kurosawa's Seven Samurai and Hidden Fortress were part of Lucas' original inspiration for Star Wars and are homaged frequently in Star Wars).
Now all we need is Kevin Smith's Boba Fett movie.
Nomis1800 - 1/14/2013, 12:20 PM
Rise!
ManOfKrypton - 1/14/2013, 12:26 PM
This is great news! I don't know what you guys are complaining about!!

This means we'll get a new Star Wars story that doesn't tie in with the other films... Fresh characters, Fresh Approach - whilst still within that universe! Great News!!!
beane2099 - 1/14/2013, 12:27 PM
I could see it. With the exception of Sucker Punch, I haven't disliked any of his movies. He knows his stuff. I can't imagine what kind of sick light saber stuff he's capable of.
CptCrunchy - 1/14/2013, 12:27 PM
The Jedi are already essentially samurai, so this is odd.
Edmundo - 1/14/2013, 12:28 PM
Not much faith in Snyder but hoping MOS works out. If it does then this news will be exciting for me
Asterisk - 1/14/2013, 12:35 PM
WHAT
MyInnerDork - 1/14/2013, 12:44 PM
Snyder's movies are all action and visuals without a good story (let's be honest in saying that even 300's story wasn't that good). No thanks.
croniccris - 1/14/2013, 12:45 PM
o hells yes!
dancingmonkey08 - 1/14/2013, 12:49 PM
I wasnt even going on CBM today but then my brother started telling me about Zack Snyder doing a Star Wars movie and my brain melted because I THOUGHT HE WAS DOING THE TRILOGY!

Then I came here to clarify this and saw spin-off and I was like, ok now I am intrigued, Zack Snyder and Star Wars, it could be interesting

Plus if Man of Steel is great, it can mean he can focus on getting a sequel to it first, then do a Star Wars spin-off movie and then finish off the Superman trilogy...yeah you obviously realise how much I (and many other of you fine fans) want the new Superman movies to succeed. If it wasnt for the Bryan Singer [frick] up, we might have a trilogy by now

But yeah, looks like the Star Wars universe will become like the Marvel Universe, Episode 7, 8 and 9 will be the Avengers level of movies and all of the other spin-off movies will be the Iron Man / Captain America of Star Wars, with or without the lead up to each Episode

oh and just like the fact George Lucas should not be let direct a Star Wars movie, Zack Snyder should not be let near the script of this movie. I still get bored by the story of Sucker Punch, great action and set pieces though

@TheRedSkull, good point, why announce this before the main trilogy. ok its not Disney announcing it but still, regular filmgoers will be confused, thinking Snyder is the main director for Star Wars
