The actress played Captain Kathryn Janeway, the first female to take the lead in a Star Trek television series. She sat down with Daily Dragon for an interview where she discusses her desire to see her show make the leap to film.

DD: When you did your Captains interview with William Shatner, what did you take away from that experience? Any new thoughts on Star Trek or your performance as Captain Janeway?

KM: My greatest thought was that we really must break the glass ceiling here in Star Trek. It’s not enough that I was the first female captain. There needs to be a continual push to open the door for women in positions of authority. In an absolutely equal way, of course. In talking to Bill I thought: This has been very much a boy’s club for a long, long time. I had the privilege and honor to be the first female, but that’s an establishment that needs now to be developed.

DD: With the reboot happening in movies, do you have any insights on what’s down the line with Star Trek? Do you think we’ll see characters from Voyager and the other next gen shows but with different backgrounds?

KM: They’ve worked long and hard for the past few years on the prequel notion. But I think they should go on and develop what happens to the characters after Voyager landed. In a movie.

DD: Yes, in a movie! Because there were books, but I say that’s not enough.

KM: Thank you very much, madam! [laughter] I’m glad you agree.

For anyone not familiar, or has forgotten, the show began with the Voyager pursuing another ship, the Maquis. Their mission is to capture the Maquis, but an event takes place that transports both ships 75,000 light years from federation space. Basically they get knocked way the hell out there in space and it is expected that it will take them 70 years to get back home. So the crews of the displaced ships merge and begin their journey. Of course along the way they encounter enemies, new and old.

The series was on for seven years and concluded with the crew actually getting home. They were able to knock off decades from their journey with a variation of solutions, such as upgrades in technology, and mind powered bumps.

The show is best known for Jeri Ryan who played a human who was turned into a borg as a child, named, Seven of Nine. She is freed by the Voyager crew and is learning about her humanity. Basically a ripoff of data, but she had a better figure then Brent Spiner so it was okay.

Would I like to see this show become a movie? Actually yes I'd be okay with it, BUT I don't want to see the same actors. I always liked the plot behind the show, but I'm not interested in seeing the original crew comeback.

Obviously Voyager. I just did the Top Ten episodes over at
PopSophia.

Deep Space Nine was alright. Voyager really had a lot of potential that never really got realized, though, and a movie would be a fantastic exploration of that.

We will never see another Next Gen era movie. Series maybe, movie no. Besides Voyager was Star Trek's weakest link IMHO. Good idea, weak characters.

She can dream. I loved Voyager when I was a kid. It was my era. But the only way a film would have worked was if they decided to make an extended series finale, somewhat like Firefly/Serenity, where they make it back to the Alpha Quadrant. Since that was in Endgame, there's no point now.

I would really love to see some straight-to-dvd Voyager movies.
Not sure they will work on the big screen, I don't even think that the TNG movies did.

As you say Tainted, it would take some pretty sketchy explaining to get everybody back together in a movie. Speaking of which, I'm surprised no one complains more about the lame excuses they come up with in the TNG movies to bring Worf back to the Enterprise.

You could do something where Janeway is an Admiral and Harry is Captain of Voyager and she rides along and takes command again in some kind of crisis. Chakotay could have his own ship. Or more likely he would be teaching at the Academy or something and tie in like Shepherd Book did in Serenity.

Voyager sucked. I thought Janeway was the worst captain of them all also.

I'm not even sure I would bother seeing a Voyager movie, and I love Star Trek.

I personally loved Voyager, thought it was waaay better than DS9.

A reason to see more Tuvok/Neelix scenes is good enough for me.

I love all Star Trek series, but Voyager was the weakest show.

Janeway started all right, but she became a terribly contradictory character.

But the special effects provided by "Foundation Imaging" provided some amazing CGI for television, specially on the episodes "Year of Hell" and "Scorpion".

In the end VOYAGER became ALMOST as good as an average BABYLON 5 episode.

That show was terrible. Thanks for turning the Borg into a joke, Voyager.

@VictorHugo

Couldn't agree more with the last part of what you said. I mean Voyager nearly made an episode on par with Grey 17 is Missing lol!

Also, why is Jeri Ryans face slapped on as the title picture for this article when it was an interview by Kate Mulgrew. Or was this just to attract more male viewers lol!

Nothing against Mulgrew though.

As for the film, imo, starting a fresh with a Voyager type story (Starship stranded in a faraway quadrant with no way home) could work if done properly.

The show had so many possibilities with the Maquis Crew, The Doctor and even Tom Paris, but never did anything of real substance with it.

Voyager was far from the weekiest (IT HAD 7 YEARS), Of course it did have low ratings when Kes was there played by Jennifer Lien for the 1st 3 years. But it definently picked up when Jeri Ryan -7 of 9 was there.

As least Trek Has had over 45 yrs over of history & tv series compared to Star Wars. NOt bashing Star Wars, but Trek clearly leds the pak on TV series. Come on Lucas gives us something new please, with out Vader or Luke!

She was the only bright spot in that show- the only reason I watched it. F*** that show!
I wanna see see a 'Deep Space Nine' movie...if only to check out naked Ferengi chicks cus' every Trekkie knows Ferengi women don't wear clothes.
Plus Odo was the man!
...and Sisco...and that freak at Quark's bar bar who never talked. He was cool too...for a freak. I digress...

Thanks to Netflix, im currently in season 6, while I agree the acting is kinda stiff in some areas, the humor and the story are good. I think this is quickly becoming one of my favorite series. I wouldnt mind seeing a 'made for tv' film, bringing most if not all the crew back together. But that would also depend on how the series finally plays out.

I still think, IMHO, Enterprise was the most underated and under appreciated of all the trek series. It definitely had the potental to deliever a few more solid seasons. I mean, ever series needs a few seasons to get the 'kinks' worked out. I think by season 4, they finally had there stuff together. But by that time, I think they saw the end coming, and just decided to start having some 'fun' with the stories.

What's interesting here is that while the article's title read's "Kate Mulgrew Wants Star Trek: Voyager Movie," there's a picture of Jeri Ryan next to it on the home page. There's also a large picture of Jeri Ryan right under the group picture of the Voyager crew. I thought this article was about what Kate Mulgrew said? Someone has a fixation. lol.

If you don't like Voyager, don't watch it. And if you didn't like it, well it's not as if it's continuity ever crosses over to any other series...

I always liked Seven, Tuvok, and the Doctor. It wasn't because Jeri Ryan is without a doubt the sexiest woman in all of Star Trek, but she brought a lot of edge, humor, and development to the series. I really never saw her as a Data knock-off, and it was only very later on that she really showed a whole lot of interest in returning to her humanity. Tuvok always cracked me up with his banter, and the Doctor should be self-explanatory.

@grif
Sure, for like one episode, and it was a ship that was never seen again. She was the first female Captain starring in a Star Trek series.

TNG was the best Trek series.

Voyager was weak-sauce. I wouldn't bother watching a movie based on that.
