Being that we have reached another milestone in this series (#15 if you are curious), I wanted to bring to you a goliath of a baddy and who better than one of the biggest bad-asses in the Marvel Universe? Come on in and read about En Sabah Nur, better known as Apocalypse.

It's time for the 15th installment of Baddies That Need Movie Love and to celebrate, I'm highlighting one of the biggest bad-asses in the Marvel Universe; a being that has been the bane of the mighty X-Men on many occasions. The one and only Apocalypse. Few rogues have ever been able to have such a lasting effect on the X-Men like Apocalypse and I think that most fans would agree: it's time for this baddy to make his big screen debut.

While wondering the harsh deserts of ancient Egypt, a group of nomads came across an abandoned infant. The child was grey-skinned and rather freakish in appearance, but the nomads took the lost child, who had been abandoned by the settlers of Akkaba and named him En Sabah Nur, or "The First One," and taught him the skills needed to be strong in order to survive the desolate surroundings. The idea of "only the strong survive" was engrained into his mind, becoming the basis of his destruction later on in life. As an adult, En Sabah Nur was captured and enslaved by the forces of Ozymandias. Not willing to be anyone's slave, he became a rebel and faught against his captors and was eventually killed. However, his mutant powers revived him and seeing himself as strong and blessed, he used the newly discovered technology of Rama Tut, he destroyed the Egyptian rulers around him.

Through the years, En Sabah Nur used this technology to regenerate and become stronger with ever re-awaking he experienced. He also traveled around the world, appearing to many different civilizations as their God of Death, striking fear into those he visited. In his travels, he came across an alien ship that had been abandoned by the alien race the Celestials. He made it his life's mission to retrieve the technology to make the ship functional and unlock the secrets of the technology, which he found that in Nathan Summers. The two had many battles, with Summers nearly killing Apocalypse, but was saved by Ozymandias who took him back to the Celestial's ship. En Sabah Nur had been infected by Summers' techno-organinc virus, which actually transformed him into a stronger being and allowed for him to interface with the Celestial ship he so desired.

Fast-forward to the 19th century, when Charles Darwin was pitching his ideas of "Survival of the Fittest" to find an English geneticist named Nathanial Essex. Apocalypse, attempting to find underlings to serve him, earned the allegiance of Essex, who had forseen the increasing number of mutants in the future, and turned him into the being now known as Mister Sinister. Sinister was soon defeated by the time-lost Cyclops and Phoenix.

More recently, Apocalypse was mysteriously awakened by the arrival of Cable, the son of Cyclops. Once awake, Apocalypse turned his attention once again to Cyclops and the X-Force team. Having created his own team, the Alliance of Evil, he felt his chances of mutant domination were great. Once the Alliance was defeated, he then turned to his Horsemen of the Apocalypse in order to further his beliefs. In the melee of the battle, Angel, a member of the X-Force, was captured and turned into the Horseman of Death. Angel eventually defected and was replaced by Caliban.

After ditching his Horsemen, Apocalypse turned to the Dark Riders, alson known as Riders of the Storm. He, along with his riders became the target of Stryfe, a clone of Cable who was raised by Apocalypse in an alternate future where the ancient being had risen to power. Later, Stryfe would leave a dying Apocalypse on the moon, where he was confronted by the Dark Riders and left for dead. Through the years, Apocalypse returned to his Four Horsemen idea, transforming many marvel characters into his slaves, including the Hulk, Wolverine, Deathbird and Caliban.

He also encountered a faction of the Skrulls, who were in the process of investigating mutations in their own race. Apocalypse led this faction of Skrulls and formed what he would call "The Twelve," a group of mutants from which he would absorb powers, giving him the ability to recreate the world in his image. Many of "The Twelve" were X-Men who had been assembled to oppose Apocalypse. During this process, Apocalypse accidentilly merged with Cyclops instead of Nate Grey, whom Apocalype preferred. Due to the over-whelming power of Cyclops' involvement, Apocalypse rejected the power and was forced to abandon his plan, and seemingly left the body of Cyclops dead. In order to save Cyclops' body, Phoenix and Cable left the X-Men and traveled to Egypt, where they found and faught an amalgimation of Cyclops and Apocalypse. During the battle, Phoenix was able to physically rip Apocalypse from the body of Cyclops, while Cable destroyed the essence of Apocalypse with his telepathic powers.

Naturally, Apocalypse did not die and he once again assembled his Horsemen, which included Gazer, Sunfire, Polaris and Gambit, who had sought Apocalypse out in order to become a mole for the X-Men but had become twisted by the vengeful being. With his powers once again at their zenith, Apocalypse attacked the X-Men at their mansion which had become more or less a refugee camp after the events of M-Day. However, Apocalypse and his Horsemen were forced to retreat when the X-Men and the Avengers rose against him. Apocalypse attempted to seek his death by his own hand, but was resurrected by the Celestials who took him to face his judgement.

Needless to say, Apocalypse could provide for an action film of epic proportions and when added to the success of the X-Men film franchise, you could have yourself a film that could appeal to many audiences. There are numerous story arcs and charachter groups to choose from, so technically speaking, fitting this into the current movie-verse would not be as hard to do as some other villains in the X-Men mythos. As I mention in the Baddies That Need Movie Love: Mr. Sinister article, the addition of Sinister, the time-line issues of the current films could be fixed rather easily in one film. A sequel to that film could include Apocalypse, bringing about one of the most popular X-Men story lines to date.

One thing that has been missing in the current X-Men films, save for a few scenes in The Last Stand and this year's First Class, is the inclusion of team-up battles with X-Men, where the entire team joins together to take down their enemies, something we should be getting in next year's Avengers! But a villains like Apocalypse would almost require for this to happen and I don't think fans would have a problem with something like this happening in a film. Between the two baddies, Sinister and Apocalypse, you have potential of creating one of the best CBM's to date, assuming you have the correct script and director involved.

It would be difficult to have an actual actor portray this character, as it could come across as quite cheesy if done wrong. So, I think the best option would be to utilize motion cap technology to create the on-screen version. This would allow for a larger, more impressive villain to appear on screen. From the sound of things, what they are doing with the Hulk in the Avengers film would work quite well for something like this. As for a voice actor, I can think of none other than the incomparable Clancy Brown to hanlde this character. Not only can he create a menacning voice, but he is damn good at what he does. You could add a bit of modification to is voice, but I don't think much is needed. Brown is one of, if not the best voice-over artists out there and would be the man to bring this character the justice he deserves. Now, I know that some of you would say that someone like Michael Clark Duncan would be a better option, but I think his coice work in Green Lantern proved that he is not great for every role that requires a "big voice." Last I checked Kilawog was not from New York, so the voice just did not match that character and I fear the exact same thing would happen with Apocalypse. Leave this character to a professional like Brown.

i would love to see apocalyspe get movie treatment, but knowing fox how they change characters it'll be nothing like the comic book counter part.
95 - 9/20/2011, 3:39 PM
Listen up Disney. When you get the rights back, all you gotta do is bring in Cable, Apocalypse and the Original Five in JJ Abrams' Star Trek style reboot.
marvel72 - 9/20/2011, 3:43 PM
@ 3d

that would be f*ckin awesome.
warlock - 9/20/2011, 3:43 PM

dmm5 - 9/20/2011, 3:46 PM
Sinister and Apocalypse would be the best duo! Hopefully they'll do it in the First Class sequel WITH.... The real original 5 First Class members since no one really cared and forgot the ones they used last time :P
P862010 - 9/20/2011, 3:47 PM
marvel aint getting rights back for like 10 years lol
ACira - 9/20/2011, 3:48 PM
@thewolf First Class would've been utter dog shit if Apocalypse was in it. It was about the origins of Prof X and Magneto, you cant just throw Apocalypse into that as well, it'd be too much.

If/when they make X4, they should set up Apocalypse, and make an Apocalypse trilogy. He's too big to be a one film villain.
SecretAvenger001 - 9/20/2011, 3:48 PM
I would love to have seen and X-Men 4 with Apocalypse and and his Horsemen as the villians, but I disagree with the Clancey Brown being the actor for the roll. I would prefer Djimon Hounsou(Blood Diamond, Constantine, and other movies) he is good actor with an authentic deep and commanding voice perfect for the Immortal Mutant.
dmm5 - 9/20/2011, 3:49 PM
Aww but they already [frick]ed up Angel in the franchise..... (smh & facepalm)

Plan B- Goverment is to wipe out the world's mind of X3 >:)
dmm5 - 9/20/2011, 3:50 PM
Oh and Iceman.... >:/
Acerimmer1 - 9/20/2011, 3:54 PM
Always thought this character was G_A_Y He's like a god so why does he need those dumb cables in his arms? Also whats with the clown mouth and doesn't he have go go gadget limbs? This guy was as big a joke as MOJO!

Comdey rip off of the Thanos/Darkseid archetype.
WesleyGibson - 9/20/2011, 4:01 PM
He is my favorite comic book villain.
superwolverine - 9/20/2011, 4:08 PM
@Acerimmer1
Respect the character buddy
SpiderManofHouseStark - 9/20/2011, 4:08 PM
YOU WILL ALL FALL BEFORE APOCALYPSE
Ace101 - 9/20/2011, 4:11 PM
he needs some love alright. but he should be done by marvel studios. fox has had enough time with the x men and frankly they havnt done a single good x men movie yet, fun: yes..good: no. i could jus imagine the final battle between apocalypse and the x man and shield near the pyramids of giza. something similar to x men animated series. :P and it would have to be 3 part movie or something like that.
GUNSMITH - 9/20/2011, 4:14 PM
WHO SHOULD PLAY APOCOLYPSE? CLARK DUNCAN..LAWRENCE FISHBURNE?
MovieTheaterLad - 9/20/2011, 4:14 PM
They'd have to make him like he was in X-Men: Evolution. That was the best one.
SageMode - 9/20/2011, 4:20 PM
Seems like Michael Clarke Duncan is the one to go to for the big, deep voiced character roles. Lol.
Ace101 - 9/20/2011, 4:20 PM
^ oh yea thats right he appeared in X men: Evolution :P
Moonwalker1991 - 9/20/2011, 4:33 PM
I want to see X-men fighting Sentinels before bringing in Apocalypse or Mr. Sinister. Just once I want to see Cyclops doing something epic. Just once I'd like to see the X-men work as a team and Sentinels is a good way to show that, show how powerful these characters are and not focus solely on Wolverine, despite his awesomeness.
militantcharles - 9/20/2011, 4:45 PM
O GOD YES!!!!!
seedslinger - 9/20/2011, 4:56 PM
On film, X-Men meets The Mummy = Oh God Please no
skidz - 9/20/2011, 5:06 PM
You forgot the 'Age of Apocalypse' series and to mention Archangel. Clancy Brown would be perfect for the part!
Tainted87 - 9/20/2011, 5:06 PM
Everyone always blames Ratner for X3's failures. Not a whole lot of people take into account how late he entered production, how little time he had, how much experience he had with the cast (and a cast of that magnitude), and what script he absolutely did not choose to film.

X3 was Rothman's screw-up, and that's that.

Anyway, back to Apocalypse. I love Clancy Brown. He plays and voices some of the best villains out there. He's not Apocalypse though. Michael Clarke Duncan, perhaps, Keith David, Kevin Michael Richardson, but not Clancy Brown.

I'm not a big fan of the character, that said. He came JUST before Mr. Sinister in the late 80s, and he had an extremely short run providing a truly unquestionable bad guy for X-Factor to fight and look good doing it. It made sense for the story, but afterwards, the writers saw the wasted potential and decided to outfit him with the craziest backstory any mutant has encountered (or had, before Cable) to keep him coming.

He's not cool. He's not even particularly menacing. He's just a tank who's been around the longest.

The movies would do well without him. Mr. Sinster would be great, but I think Shaw was made to be too much like the character for him to appear fresh anytime soon.
themayer88 - 9/20/2011, 5:13 PM
LOVE LOVE LOVE APOCOLYPSE!! super powerful, super cool villan! always fights the ENTIRE X-Men to a stand-still every time. Definatly a good choice for a movie...and i like Sinister as much as the next guy, but compared to Apocolypse, he dosent stand a chance. itd be cool to incorporate them both in one movie somehow tho!
drykillogic22 - 9/20/2011, 5:14 PM
The most underated and underused villain in marvel U...
themayer88 - 9/20/2011, 5:16 PM
as far as casting choices go, youre right it would be really had to have a real person do it. id say go CGI and have Andre Brower, or maybe even James Earl Jones do the voice:)
ecksmanfan - 9/20/2011, 5:16 PM
Why do people think Duncan would be good for every role that requires a big actor or a deep voice? He sucked ass as Kilawog...He can't do accents or alter his voice...Not good. Clancy Brown is a true voice over talent and could make this work.
alphamale80 - 9/20/2011, 5:18 PM
yeah he is my favorite bad guy next to sabertooth But fox will freak it up. that is what they do to anything x men related
Ace101 - 9/20/2011, 5:22 PM
how about James Blendick?
(1998-1998) Silver Surfer ... Galactus (voice)
(1996-1997) X-Men ... High Evolutionary (voice), Apocalypse/En Sabah Nur (voice) (1997)

"ECKS"-cellent article!!!

THIS is how comicbookmovie..com lead-in articles should be written.

BRAVO!

ecksmanfan - 9/20/2011, 5:41 PM
bropous- thanks!
Deathlok - 9/20/2011, 5:52 PM
I don't want Fox touching this character with a 10 ft. poll.
bropous - 9/20/2011, 5:58 PM
"Wolverine and the X-Men" 's first season finale wrapped up with Apocalypse appearing over a major city to the adoring chants of a massive crowd. Did they ever start, or release, the second season? The first one was so good, hopefully they got the funding to get a second season rolling.
aRandomSinisterClone - 9/20/2011, 6:03 PM
Every xmen movie should have hinted at him pulling strings in the back. Then if you ever use him he has years of roadwork laid down w his hands in everything
robvillain - 9/20/2011, 6:34 PM
"Age of Apocalypse" = one of the greatest story lines ever.

Apocalypse definitely deserves some movie love. I always saw Brian Thompson as the big A. Ahaha, he kind of looks like him. I guess he's getting too old now though.

Mrsinister - 9/20/2011, 6:59 PM
ok ACTUALLY it was XFACTOR not XFORCE!
TheOmegaOne - 9/20/2011, 7:20 PM
Kevin Michael Richardson

or

Kevin Grevioux

for the voice over.
Tainted87 - 9/20/2011, 8:48 PM
Hey if you're talking VOICE actors, not playing the ACTUAL role, then sure - Clancy Brown would be great. But Apocalypse is Egyptian.

No, I don't really think of him as a scrub, but he's always made a fool of because somebody's gonna turn on him. First it was Archangel (Fall of the Mutants), then Sinister and Stryfe (X-Cutioner's Song), then Sinister again (Sinister's origin story), and then the mutants of his experiment proved unfit (the Twelve), then by his servant Ozymandias (Blood of Apocalypse).
The fact that he pretty much made made Sinister what he was, entrusted him with all of that technology, and then have Sinister almost literally stab him in the back with a plague engineered to attack only him (instead of wiping out humanity).... goes to show this guy's not the brightest of the bunch. He may be one of the most powerful mutants in comics, but he's kind of retarded.

I'll take Sinister any day.
FireKnightRises - 9/20/2011, 8:51 PM
Yeah My favourite X-villain Apoc!!
with right studio they better reboot the franchise and put sinister in it then put apoc in sequel as sinister's master kind like vader and sidious

they can make it with master-apprentice angle with sinister who try to betrayed his master

it's better than magneto who always appear in every [frick]ing films
sbdc1939 - 9/20/2011, 9:25 PM
im sorry but the last two x men movies (not first class or wolverine) would of been way better if they focused on mr sinster and ended with apocolips.
breakthebat2306 - 9/20/2011, 9:33 PM
The rock would kill it as apocalypse he and jackman are friends anyway he is huge and he can do the action and the massiveness that the x men need.
ScionStorm - 9/20/2011, 9:59 PM
You have Kang the Conquerer to thank for Apocalypse. :D
Thunderkutfo - 9/20/2011, 10:34 PM
Darkseid, Thanos, Atrocitus, Terrax, Black Adam, Doomsday and Galactus on the big screen!
